Peter Gabriel was the lead singer of Genesis & Phil Collins was the drummer. Peter left the band in the mid 70’s to start a solo career & Phil took over as lead singer.

My eldest brother and have noted that this was one time where the member who left and the band went on to achieve massive success. Phil Collins of course has also done solo work. Another member, I just know his first name is Michael formed a group, Mike and the Mechanics that achieved some success as well.

As is the opinion of others commenting here, i was hoping this was going to be the SECRET WORLD live version. This was wonderful, but i guess i'm just partial to the earlier performance.
I would be willing to wager that your viewers would be happy to hear/see the younger rendition of this beautiful world music song.

Peter Gabriel very much trail blazed what became known as 'world music'. In the early 1970s, he used to invite great performers of diverse musical traditions (Afrca, Asia, etc.) to his large house and grounds and jam until the diverse traditions seemed to fuse into something creative and new. Thanks for your reaction.

This live version is terrific and I enjoyed it immensely. But, for me, the live version on "The Secret World" tour live version is better, for one particular reason. Peter was a lot younger on "TheSecret World" live version and he is much more energetic, along with all his partners on stage... a lot more dancing around on the circular stage. you should really check out the "The Secret World" version who also features U.S..female vocalist Paula Cole throughout the entire album/cd. Her performance of "Don't Give Up" rivals the Kate Bush version...and that's saying something. Peter has many "African" derived singles...check out the song " Bico" about the murder of a young African doctor. I saw Peter Gabriel with Genesis live in Santa Barbara during the "Lamb Lies Down" tour. What you should know is that Genesis, with Peter Gabriel, was probably the most "theatrical" rock bands live going, along with Yes and Floyd. Peter used to dress in outragious costumes. He always pushed the envelope and , eventually, caused the Genesis band asked him to leave. For the both of you, if you really want to know what early, prog Genesis was all about, listen to the "Foxtrot"album.

    • @Vince-lq3ve
      @Vince-lq3ve 7 месяцев назад

Love your comment, just one small note...Gabriel left of his own accord, he was never asked to leave by Genesis-far from it (hell, they had no-one to take his place and considered quitting for a brief moment -then Phil gave the lead vocals a try, kinda worked out, lol). Peter was feeling too much of the pressure of the growing popularity of the band and the constraints of creating music amongst a group of 5 songwriters, in addition to the complicated birth of his first child. It can also be noted that each band member produced solo efforts -it was a deeply talented group of songwriters. It is no surprise they finished with only three original band members -it was a crowded room initially.

I agree with folks who suggest the same song from the Secret World Live tour from the 1990s. Each tour, Peter Gabriel will take a different group of world musicians out with him. The world music sound is very much in this song, and it influences all his music.

Peter Gabriel was the original singer of Genesis up until "The Lamb lies down on Broadway". Peter left the band after that for a solo career, and Phil Collins, who was their drummer, became the new lead singer.
I saw Peter once live back in 1984 i think in Bremen Germany.

The thing you must realize is that Phil Collins sounds like Peter Gabriel, not the other way around. Phil sang backup to Peter in Genesis, and when Peter left for a very successful solo career, the band was left to search for a singer. Phil was a world-class drummer and they really didn't want to take him off the kit, but throughout the auditions nobody was measuring up to what they wanted, and finally Phil sang on some practices and they realized he sounded very near to Peter. They chose to put him out front, bringing Chester Thompson over on drums from Weather Report. In the early days of those changes, they had two drum kits set up and Phil would dash back on certain songs. Peter has gone on to expand the world of music to include sounds and performers from all over the world. I saw him at the Roxy in Hollywood on his very first tour, with Robert Fripp, Tony Levin, Larry Fast and a whole collection of top notch musicians. If you want to be amazed by performance art ... try "Downside Up" live from the Ovo tour. Maybe the most innovative and brilliant performance of a song ever. His daughter, Melanie, sings with him on the song. I promise a mind blowing experience..

When Peter was the lead vocalist of Genesis the band was a progressive style band. After he left Phil who was the drummer and did backing vocals that harmonized well with Peter he took over almost by default and a star is born. The Secret World live version is as good a performance as you will ever see or hear Peter did a song called Sledgehammer which was a weird and spectacular video that MTV played forever and drew much attention from the public and critics alike! You might want to react to his tune Solisbury Hill as well his earlier works with Genesis like The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway!

    Oh! Wow!
I was at that same concert in Milan more years ago than I like to count!
I promise that I started crying tears of pure joy when that same song (In your eyes) started.
That song was the very first song I had broadcasted in radio and was by pure chance... and this is a very funny story I would like to share.
It was may, just 2 days after my birthday. I had to meet with a friend at the radio station and, strangely enough, I was early and had some time to "kill" and some money in my young pockets.
While lazily walking in the medieval streets of Perugia, I've seen a van stopping in front of my favourite record shop and starting to unload a Peter Gabriel's real life sized cardboard figure and some crates of vynils of "So" (yeah... not so many CD's at the time... I'm old :-P). "Oh! Wow! Peter just published something new! Let's check it out!"... I came out from the shop with my freshly printed copy of what I later discovered as an authentic masterpiece... and my time to meet my friend came and started rushing toward the radio station with my brand new, still sealed record.
When I arrived there, my friend was truly panicking: he was supposed to start his broadcast and had the worst laringitis ever, his troath was so aching that he was totally unable of running the show for the full hour of his shift. Ouch!
Luckily, I was at the time an accomplished musician, had some familiarity with the mixer and some knowledge with music, so he greeted me as his savior: "You will run the show on my behalf: just make this hour go!".
I had no clue on how to run a radio broadcast, but I had my new record in my hands so, after a brief presentation by my DJ friend, I started introducing myself, explained why I was stealing the show and... opened my record proposing a "first listening" of it: "Being a bass player, I usually listen first the first track of the B side of an LP: this is the bass player song... in this song the bass is played by Tony Levin, that is an absolute genius and mos of you would recognize him because he is also the bass player of King Krimson, David Bowie, James Tailor, Yes and many more... the song is called "In your eyes" and it's the first time I listen to it myself."... placed the needle on the dead wax and... pure magic.
Quoting Pat Metheny: "being a musician, you can't live without your copy of Peter Gabrie's "So" : you can tell there is a "Before SO" and an "After SO" gap in music".
I' happy to see young persons (like I was at the time /nostalgia) discovering that record as it was fresh!

Been a fan of Gabriel since his Genesis days. Genesis being one of the legendary prog rock bands of the 60s, 70s along with Floyd and Yes. His solo career has been remarkable. Solsbury Hill from his first album was a massive hit. He had been quite the performance artist on stage with Genesis and this translated into amazing and innovative music videos just as MTV launched. I'm sure the answer to your question is Sledgehammer. My favorite vid is Don't Give Up, a duet with Kate Bush. Those two collaborated a great deal together. And of course, In Your Eyes is the song playing during the enigmatic Boombox Serenade scene from Say Anything, a great love story of a film.

Gabriel is fantastic vocalist, both early in his career in Genesis, with great prog rock, as after that. I loved his first single after Genesis, Solsbury Hill, but he made many more songs that you should listen to. At some times, his music is described as world music, he never held back exploring different influences from all over the world and incorporating that in his music. And he had a bunch of world class musicians joining him on that voyage. The bass player with the low voice is the legendary Tony Levin, who also can play the chapman stick, and that is impressive.

Yes, other Viewers ave already explained that: Peter gabriel was genesis main vocalist (althugh Phil Collins had some short songs on his own) between 1968 and 1974 he left in 1975 and the band were looking for another vocallist but eventually decided that Phil Collins would be the best fit. Gabriel, meanwhile, pursued a solo career, but also is a proponent and supporter of World music, playing with or for exotic musicians from Asia, Africa, South America. There exists another version of this live performance where he sings, e.g. with Papa Wemba, one of the most prominent musicians of Congo. 🙂 And the guy with the deep bass voice t the beginning (who hppens to play bass ;- ) was Tony Levin, a session musician to a myriad of different performers but also the member of King Crimson. 🙂

I went to see Peter in London a few months ago. (In concert, I didn't pop round for tea.) What an experience. I've loved Sledgehammer for so long I thought that would be the highlight; but over the past few years I've grown to love this song, and I went for In Your Eyes. Wasn't disappointed.😊

Genesis were one of the major Prog rock bands in the seventies, with strong classical elements, they were five members, but two left because the music was becoming Pop- like in content
Phil Collins took over the singing from Peter because they could not find a replacement for Gabriel
nowadays Genesis are seen as main stream Pop, one of the members that also left is Steve Hackett and he is taking the original Genesis music all over the world including sell out performances' the latest concert being a couple of weeks ago in America
the song 'Suppers ready' is an absolute classic, and from Peter's solo career 'Games without Frontier is one of his great songs but there were many

Great reaction. Please check out Peter Gabriel who sang Don’t give up with Kate Bush… Long story short…haha Phil Collins replaced John Mayhew on drums in 1970. Peter Gabriel left the band in 1975 and Phil Collins took over on lead vocals.

You should definitely check out In your eyes from the secret world. He had a lot of African musicians on the stage. PG has a record label that promotes music from all around the world, which also influenced Peter's music.
The best next song might be "Secret World from the secret world tour

FYI The background singer in the black dress is his daughter Melanie. He wrote the song COME TALK TO ME about her; when she was a little girl Peter got divorced and Melanie was confused and hurt so she stopped talking to him. Years later, after they reconciled, Melanie joined him onstage to sing the song together: ruclips.net/video/4J1gWMLbV70/видео.html

There is, or can be, a duel meaning to this song. It could be referring to a love interest, or it be religious in nature. This performance is good, but the best is a live performance video from the 90's with Paula Cole. It's off the charts.
