Peter was the lead singer for fantastic 70’s rock band, Genesis. When Peter left to go solo then Genesis drummer, Phil Collins took over as the lead singer.

Now imagine what happened to me.
In 2018 My family and I flew from Slovenia to London because my daughter was about to receive her Master of Arts degree at the Royal Albert Hall.
The energy with the students and their families from around the world was pure magic. I`ve never seen so many nervous and at the same time happy people in my life. And then they began calling out the names of those, who were about to receive an honorary doctor`s degree.
I had no clue, who those people were. BUT, then suddenly, we all hear the name PETER GABRIEL!!! My heart didn`t skip one beat, but multiples. And so we sat there and watched the ceremony in which Peter Gabriel was honored with the Doctor`s degree, on my daughter`s happy day. It was unexpected, so exciting, and unforgettable.
A day full of pure bliss :)))💓💞💕

While you're here it would be a shame, as others state, to miss out on the Secret World Live version of 'In Your Eyes', especially if you like the live choreography of the show, it's a stunning rendition, even shows the audience going crazy, almost participating themselves.
This is the Secret World Live tour. One of the most amazing concerts ever. You said you like theatrics... you'd love pretty much every cut of this performance. You absolutely must react to the "In Your Eyes" performance from this concert. It's incredible. Other notables... Steam, Don't Give Up, Digging in the Dirt, Shaking the Tree, Come Talk to Me
Peter Gabriel has such a unique voice and style...well worth a deep dive into him. He's one of the reasons the 80's were what they were. Genius level songwriting and performances, both on stage and in his videos (which were artistically groundbreaking as well).

I've watched the Secret World version of In Your Eyes hundreds of times, and the pure beauty of the lyrics and the vocal performances still brings me to joyful tears now and then. With no shame whatsoever! 😂

The woman singing with him is Paula Cole who had her own Grammy winning album. You should check out Where Have All the Cowboys Gone by her. Peter Gabriel even sang on her debut album This Fire
It was her exposure on this tour that got her the record deal. Before this 87 Tour, no one had heard of her.
..Peter Gabriel is not only a singer / composer , but also an artist. In everything He does. "Sledgehammer! is just a song!!. And I think WE should appreciate that He always bring to the stage , some of the worlds finest/ greatest artists ; Paula Cole (singer) , Manu Katchè (amazing drummer) , Tony Levin , on Bass (check out the other "projects" He is into) David Rhodes (guitarist) -And He also ask local artists to cooperate and join Him on stage.
Britt, you don't know how right you were early on when you said this song is 'cocky'. As if there weren't enough metaphors in those first verses with clues as to just what 'Sledgehammer' is really about, the ground breaking promo video for the single started with some microscopic biology going on. Your comment about Peter's mating dance was astute too.
Peter Gabriel's live performances are always just so full of life, and fun. You can always tell the whole band is just having a blast on stage, too

Peter Gabriel is a special kind of human being. He’s so fun to see live he’s a showman. The music video for this one is wild. You need to do his live version of In Your Eyes, also from one of my favorite 80s movies Say Anything. Pete started his career ina the band Genesis with Phil Freakin Collins
His version of ‘Book of Love’ is another whole vibe. Worth a listen.
I bet not many people remember that Peter Gabriel and his band closed out the 25th anniv Woodstock Festival in 1994 with his Secret World Tour. THE VERY LAST BAND LATE SUNDAY NIGHT. The last song they played was BIKO, from the Melt album. As the drum beats started, Peter spoke to the crowd and told them to hold their candles? or lighters up. The entire crowd was bathed in flickering candlelight and what an iconic performance. At the end of the song (about Steven Biko's murder in South African prison) , PG had the entire crowd chanting "oh oh ohhhhhh ohhh" as the song winds down. Then one by one each band member leaves the stage, until only Gabriel is left chanting with the candlelight crowd. He says, "its now up to YOU, to carry this light forward into the world and make it better and just". Then he slowly walks out, exhorting the chanting to continue, and the crowd continues to chant for about 10 minutes with the band exited, everyone still holding the candles. An incredible emotional moment. Don't know how many people were still watching the PPV live broadcast because it was about 1 am NYC time. So glad I taped the whole thing.

Another incredible performance by Peter is Growing up from the Growing up tour filmed in Italy. He is older but still an incredible vibe.
His song "Big Time" is his self-affirmation song about being a solo artist success.

Back in his days in Genesis (pre Phil Collins) he did some of the most interesting things on stage. My most prevalent memory is him on stage dressed as a flower.

In case you don't know, Gabriel was a big fan of American R&B, Motown growing up. He's channeling Marvin Gaye with his voice there. PG always had a "dirty mind" with his lyrics when he was the lead singer of Genesis before Phil Collins. He likes to be coy.

it's funny to watch these concerts with you, because the whole 'official video' and developing an opinion about the music was mostly related to listening to radio, way back when,,, mtv was big turning point for sure.. btw... this is sooo great,,,, never seen it before!

He was very much into theatrics, in his Genesis days. He sometimes wore crazy headgear that made it harder to hear his vocals. 😂
Watch more from this concert, "The secret world, live". The whole thing is great, I've seen the video several times and have the double CD that I play often. Opens with "Talk to me" closes with "In your Eyes", there is also "Don't give up" the last one perhaps watch the original video first, it is another very special one. As many others recommend look up the original video for Sledge Hammer, it is a piece of work on it's own.

Peter Gabriel has done some of the best concerts I’ve ever seen. I caught this tour in Chicago in 1993 (and already have my ticket to see him in October, in L.A.). As mentioned, you should definitely check out the official video for this song. Fantastic animation. Shoutout has to go out to bassist extraordinaire Tony Levin, whose monster bass line really propels the song.

For me, Peter Gabriel stands head and shoulders above all the musicians in the world, on a par with the band "Sparks". They were so new in their time that they cracked the brains of listeners) Geniuses.

Again, you need to see the official video. At the time it was groundbreaking with stop motion and special computer effects. One of his underrated songs and videos is "Steam" that you would really dig.

Peter Gabriel is a singular artist. Lead singer and creative force for early progressive music (Genesis), one of the most popular and interesting artists of the 80’s and instrumental in the broadening appeal of musical styles from around the world.
Plus, when he was young he was skinny and androgynous (kinda Beiberish) and he now looks more portly and bald. So I used him as an object lesson for my then Tween daughter demonstrating that her obsessions would end up looking like her dad.

The official video was mostly stop-action animation, with a touch of HBO's Max Headroom thrown in. A great video? Yes! The best? there are many types and styles of music videos.
80's music was full of innuendo, nearly all of it.
Sledgehammer was his big breakthrough single, the hit that he needed basically. If you want to see something with backing singer Paula Cole then check out their live performance (from the same concert) of the song Come Talk To Me which he wrote as a letter to his daughter.

His first single, Solsbury Hill, was his breakthrough hit, and he had more before Sledgehammer (Shock the Monkey, Biko, Games Without Frontiers)

Solsbury Hill got moderate radio play. Biko was never a big single, it was 7 min long. The other songs you mentioned got some radio play but were more known for their videos on MTV. Gabriel didn't reach mass commercial appeal until the So album with Sledgehammer.
@@kbrewski1 That depends on where you're looking. As most people tend to only look at U.S popularity, I'll assume that's the metric you're using, but it doesn't tell the whole story. Either way, to say he didn't have a hit song until Sledgehammer would be misleading at best, and even if Sledgehammer wasn't on the album, 'Don't Give Up,' 'Big Time,' and 'In Your Eyes' would've propelled the sales of 'So' quite adequately, so it wasn't the song he 'needed.'

Yes, I'm using US chart positions. I live in the US, I'm an American. Popularity in the US is what makes an artist a star or not. I don't care what he did in Zimbabwe or New Zealand.

In April 1986, "Sledgehammer" was released as the album's lead single and became Gabriel's first and only number one on the Billboard Hot 100, displacing Genesis' first and only US number one "Invisible Touch".
Gabriel's commercial success with his first 4 albums was moderate. The first album had Solsbury Hill but barely registered on the charts Album 38, Solsbury Hill #68. A blip on the radar. The 2nd album did nothing and had NO singles. Gabriel was actually dropped by Atlantic for his 3rd album, and it was released by Geffen in the US. Again, very moderate success, album peaked at 22, Games Without Frontiers peaked at #48 in the US. Not even top 40. Again, a blip. The 4th album Security had moderate success, #28, and Shock the Monkey reached #29 on the singles chart, mainly because of the MTV video. IT WAS GABRIEL'S FIRST US TOP 40 HIT.
It wasn't until he purposely moved more commercial and pop, less experimental, that he had great worldwide chart success with So. The biggest US singles were Sledgehammer and Big Time.
Sooooo, it was So that broke him commercially to the masses. Before that, only Genesis diehards like me were buying his albums. Its a fact. Don't fight it.

this hit the airways in 1986. played a lot. love the song, the rythym...the lyrics. however, i was surprised it wasn't censored. "open up your fruitcake, i'll be your honey bee." "i wanna be your sledgehammer. show for me, and i'll show for you...hmm. fast forward 8 years to 1994, and Tom Pettys hit "You Don'i Know How it Feels" gets censored for radio play!? because of the word Joint. they actually blurred it out!!
She has an amazing voice and performed wonderfully during this tour.

Might I also suggest "Blood of Eden' or "Don't give up" from this show as well. Paula Cole is an excellent duet partner, perfectly complementing his voice.
