Jamal. The 80s in the UK were tough for a lot of people, especially if were unemployed. I was one of them. I fell into deep depression and suicidal thoughts. I remember this song/message gave me so much hope. I'm in a much better place in my life at the moment but I take nothing for granted. God bless those people who are suffering right now.
When I was younger someone told me that you should wave to strangers if your eyes meet. Because that might be all they need to make it to the next morning. I’ve done it ever since.
True story: While in college in the late 80's, 1 night in I was drunk and feeling down about a woman, and I drove down a winding road which ran along the side of the Wisconsin River. It was a very treacherous road with many curves, and it was known for bad accidents. Somehow I made it down the whole stretch, even though I was driving at excessive speed, and I really didn't care if I would crash; In fact, I think at some point it was my goal. Then when I turned around with the plan of driving back with the same reckless abandon, this song came on the radio, and I just pulled over and began to cry. Now every time I hear this song, I'm completely filled with gratefulness and thanks, cuz it totally woke me up and turned my life around!

1988, I was three years in to a long distance relationship, I was from the uk, she was in Denmark, I was in the Navy. The strain of being apart so much was beginning to tell and I felt she was slipping away. So three years after we first me we are back in the same bar, dancing and having fun, when this song came on. I held her tight as we danced then made the biggest decision of my life. I got down on one knee and proposed. we were happily married for 30 years, this song was our wedding dance. Last year it also played at the funeral of my wife as she fell victim of Covid 19. The song will always have a special significance for me, just like my wife will always be in my heart.

Back in the 1980s, my first wife and I listened to a lot of music together; Gabriel's "So" album was a frequent spin. In 1987 she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, and the tumor was deemed "inoperable," so chemo was the only chance. This song -- that message, don't give up -- was immeasurably helpful to keep her spirits up, to keep fighting. 32 years now without her, and this song still brings the mist to my eyes.

This is UNBELIEVABLE! EXACTLY 40 years ago, on December 18, 1980, my father died by suicide in a particularly horrific way. I was 13 and back then we dealt with such things by "being a man" about it. The aftermath was a decades-long NIGHTMARE for me. This song has always been so very IMPORTANT to me because that has been the role my wife has unceasingly played for me throughout our relationship. Then on December 18, 2018, a man came into the parking lot where I work and committed suicide in the EXACT SAME WAY as my father. Once again my wife's support was nothing less than heroic and I spent a lot of time listening to this song. Now... you, Jamel, you picked December 18, 2020, to feature THIS song! I have always thought that God came to a point with the man in 2018 where he said, "I've done all I can but he still chooses to take his own life. Therefore all I can do is to steer him into a place where this act may do some good for someone else. Maybe David can have a second chance to deal with his father's suicide." And now, for whatever reason, you were "inspired" to listen to THIS song on THIS day.
The strength and intimacy they acted is so powerful. Their voices bring tears to my eyes. This is so stunning. There are no powerful duets like this nowadays. This song grabs your soul and doesn't let go.
Kate Bush is a truly a rare gem and she does not get nearly half the recognition she deserves. If you want to be moved to your very core, listen to Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work". The song tells the story of a woman dying in childbirth and her struggle to stay alive. I bawl like a baby whenever I hear this. The other song you should listen to of hers is the remastered version of Wuthering Heights. David Gilmour of Pink Floyd plays the guitar and delivers a blistering solo at the end of the song. Both songs are just beautiful pieces of finely spun music that will grab your soul.
I read an interview with Peter Gabriel where he was asked about this video. He talked about the song, and the video concept, then he said something like; “and I got to hug Kate Bush all day!”
My dude held me like this to pray for me before I boarded a plane back home. 😢😢😢❤️❤️❤️...one of my favorite songs especially when he says "Nobody wants you when you lose" 😞
Kate Bush....such an incredible songwriter and musician. And stunningly beautiful. "Moments of Pleasure", "This Woman's Work", "Jig of Life", just to name three. Oh, "December Will Be Magic Again" to make it seasonal.
Peter Gabriel wanted Dolly Parton to sing in this song. She didn’t know who Peter was and declined. Lucky for us we got Kate. Another duet of Kate and Peter is “Games without Frontiers.”
This song gets me every time. If you want a real gut punch, listen to Kate Bush sing "This Woman's Work" if you haven't already. Absolutely beautiful and devastating.
And Kate Bush is my absolute inspiration. Her music and her art is something to behold. Beautiful person inside and out, so creative. There is so much you should listen of hers
1988 Human Rights Concert in Los Angeles. I saw Peter Gabriel and Tracy Chapman duet this. It was one of the most beautiful live things I have ever seen and heard!
I have loved this song since it came out. I have probably heard it hundreds of times, but with everything going on right now in the world and in life - tears are streaming down my cheeks. Peter Gabriel has one of the most distinct and amazing voices I have ever heard and Kate Bush is a legend.
When your psyche has been shattered and all that remains is a sniveling husk; bereft; screaming into the void for something...anything the relieve the misery... Along comes a song like this. Yes indeed; this song helped me get through some hard years when the black dog had me firmly in its grip. It still brings a tear to my eye. The power of music to soothe the hurt caused by life on planet Earth cannot be calculated
Jamel, don't be surprised if you get a load of stories of how this song got people through personal crises Here's one more (mine) I used to work on a chemical plant. Worked there 20 years, the workmates were a great crew. We were told it was shutting down, then we were told that a Dutch entrepreneur wanted to buy the plant. We had all got our hopes up, then the works number 1 told us it had all fallen through, that was it. I put the radio on and this was the first song played Still makes me cry 24 years later Keep up the good work Tony
This song saved my life after a bad car accident, I was tempted to take my own life and this song was recommended on youtube. Without it I am very sure I would've taken my own life. Every time I hear this song I break down and cry.
This is high art. In my opinion, the most beautiful music video ever created. Two very distinct, emotive voices from two of the most original artists performing a timeless song with deep, profound lyrics. Love your thoughtful reaction, Jamel.
The bassist on this is Tony Levin, who's been on all of Peter's solo albums, as well as live concerts. He's also a long standing member of King Crimson, and arguable one of the finest bassists you've never heard of because his style is very much to be that hidden support beam that holds everything up.
on YT somewhere there's a video of a Gabriel concert in South America some years back. Between songs, Peter read from translated texts, since he didn't speak the language (may have been Portuguese; not sure). When it came time to introduce the band, he started with the newest member, which meant Tony would be the last... Right after Peter named guitarist David Rhodes, the cheering for Tony started and grew steadily louder as PG read the text; when he spoke Tony's name, the place erupted. So much love for PG's longest-serving colleague and an iconic, beloved bassist.
From Wikipedia: "He composed lyrics within a situation about a man whose unemployment causes stress in his domestic relationship. The verses, sung by Gabriel, describe the man's feelings of isolation, loneliness and despair; the choruses, sung by Bush, offer words of hope and encouragement." Kinda relevant what with covid causing widespread job losses and economic downturns causing economic strain in the home. Brilliant song.
Biko is such an amazing song. When he played Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, during the SO tour, he ended the concert with Biko...and the crowd sang the song for at least a good 5 minutes after he left the stage!
@@FarrellMcGovern Hey Farrell, I was at that concert too! The Red Rain intro was awesome and the concert got better and better as it progressed. Was Youssou N'Dour in Ottawa that night when Peter sang In your eyes? Cheers
This song means so much to me. It helped me deal with my depression during a time of unemployment a few months ago. It was suggested to me by my therapist. Although I already knew it from my adolescence, this time I really listened. It caused a breakthrough in my state of pent-up emotions and allowed me to really face my condition for the first time in months. I cried like the 55 year old child that I am and even now, months later I couldn't keep it dry. Thank you very much for reacting to this Jamel. You changed my day today, that's for sure.
Sounds like we've had the same experience. I lived through the '80s when I was a teenager, and I didn't hear this song then, but I bought his "So" album as a used CD when I was in my early 30s. I listened to this song off it, and it didn't affect me at first. Then I lost my job, and I had a terrible time finding work, because it was in the midst of a downturn in my industry. I was in the dumps. I listened to it again, and I bawled. It so touched what I was feeling, and I loved hearing Kate sing, "Don't give up." It's what I needed to hear. I was part of a job search group that met regularly to swap ideas. I felt like suggesting this song to everyone there, but I was reticent, because of the part where Peter sings about, "Gonna stand on that bridge, keep my EYES down below. Whatever may come, and whatever may go, that river's flowing." In my mind, that seemed like he was contemplating suicide, though he doesn't go through with it. Very powerful, but scary. I didn't want to give anyone any ideas, but I put it forward anyway with a disclaimer, saying I wasn't talking about that. I got a response from someone in the group saying thank you. As I can see here, I think this song helped a lot of people. Good job, Peter and Kate.
I've been a fan of Peter Gabriel since his time with Genesis and when he toured for the So album I went to see him live, a show I'll never forget. This song has a special meaning for me and it's quite odd that you decide to react to it now, at this time of year. You see, my father committed suicide the 13th of december 2006, he left a note on the kitchen table and we never found his body. I came to terms with this event but there's ONE thing that I could never accept, he died alone thinking that no one needed or loved him and that's the worst thing a human can feel. I wish this for no one. If you feel you're done down here on this ball, please, please don't give up.
Solsbury Hill needs the backstory of why the song was written.... its so much more impactful when put against the backdrop of him making the decision to leave Genesis at the beginning of their fame..
The ability of some people to write timeless music just knocks me out. PG, Sting, Lennon...outstanding music! (ps Peter and Paula secret world live version also amazing!)
I was very familiar with this song and even tho it was released in the mid 80s- when 911 happened and I was on my way home from work I hit play on my cassette player and this song started to play -- it fit so well with how I was feeling that day -- it found a whole new place in my heart
When my father had lost his entire life's savings, he was desperate and suicidal...he would play this song over and over and over again. To this day, this song brings me back to that time and tears. Luckily he had us to keep him from 'giving up'.
I saw Peter in London when he did the "So' tour in 2013. When he got to this I looked around the place and half the people had tears in their eyes. Including me. A wonderful reaction to a fabulous song.
"Okay guys - for the video I just want to hug Kate Bush for five minutes" "Don't we all Peter, don't we all..." "It's a tough job but someone's got to do it!"
Surprised to see this review, I thought this tune was lost and forgotten. The video device of the singers rotating in embrace, each facing camera as they deliver their vocal is so simple and so perfect for the tune.
Every time I listen to this, I tear up and the hairs on my arms raise. The line that pushes me over the edge is: "Drove the night toward my home; the place that I was born, on the lakeside…As daylight broke, I saw the earth, the trees had burned down to the ground."
After leaving the army I got a DOD job in Germany and then found out it was limited to 5 years unless you were mission essential. Needles to say the five years passed and I was looking at either leaving that path entirely to stay here and work for the Germans, which scared me to death, or go back to the states wherever they found me a job. I opted out. I had never really listened to this song but bought his greatest hits album. This came on, I bawled my eyes out.
“This Women’s Work” by Kate Bush is devastatingly beautiful. In the John Hughes’ movie ‘She’s Having a Baby,” the intensely honest sadness scene will touch your soul, especially if you’ve had miscarriages. We’ve been BLESSED with an amazingly stellar girl, who just turned 16. She knows that she has four siblings, two before and two after her that are part of our family that are loved. I found myself saying after the 4th miscarriage not why all those happened but realizing she’s is a God given gift.
Gosh, thanks for sharing this. Wow, I can't begin to imagine what you and your partner have been through. So, yes, your daughter is very, very special indeed. Merry Christmas, all of you. 💗🙏
A song I have listened to several times when I was thinking of killing myself, just so someone would be on my side. Tears every time I hear this, but still love it, and so much more. Thank you Jamel. EDIT: It was 30 years ago or so, in high school.
I hope you stick around even though I don't know you. There's actually scientific proof that you should live. Your body is designed to fight for life until it can't. Your heart beats, your lungs breathe, your white blood cells attack infection, your liver and kidneys filter your blood AND repair themselves, your cells regenerate, and your brain keeps it all going....all this happens automatically. Your body wants to live. Plus Jamel would be crushed. He does these videos for us...to make us happy. He cares.
This song means a lot to me. I’ve been a fan of Peter Gabriel for a long time. This was my favorite song from him. Then in 2009, I was diagnosed as HIV+. This song became my mantra, managing the disease. Even beyond the chorus, the lyrics give me comfort as well.
This song deals with the utter despair that strikes a man when he's lost his livelihood. When he feels like a failure and he's scared that he won't be able to provide for his family. The video shows a visual representation how a couple hangs on to each other like a lifeline. There'ssomething inhumane about a person being robbed of their dignity when they are unable to have what they need to support themselves or their family.
I've got a group of friends, who have been like family to me. We all battle mental health problems together, and have been through hell and high water (bonus points for getting the reference). This song has really become our theme song, as we battle together as not just friends, but family. Such a lovely piece of music.
"Especially the way they were just holding each other throught the whole video..." "Cause, through everything, all the lyrics, he was singing and saying, he was still being held." That's a beautiful thing to notice. This is why we like you :-)
This songs hits you a whole different way when you've grown older and experienced moments like these. I still get that little surge when the gospel piano cuts in.
I only first listened to this brilliant song a year or so back even though I was around back in 1989. I think I was too busy listening to S/A/W music at the time😁

This song is amazing. You should check out Kate Bush, Running up that hill. That song is amazing too.
under ice - chills me, no pun
Nah......wuthering heights, man with the child in his eyes, cloudbursting
It is amazing! So is “This Woman’s Work”!
Peter Gabriel though!!!
god yessssssssssssss!
Absolutely. Love that song and the video is amazing.
Dolly might have been a great choice as well. It’s really incredible that Peter even thought of her as a duet partner.
We still want Peter and Dolly to collab.
Julia Hoff .and "No Self Control".
Depending on what you like - it doesn't get much better than this. A duet by two of the most cerebral musicians of the late 20th century!
This song gets me every time. If you want a real gut punch, listen to Kate Bush sing "This Woman's Work" if you haven't already. Absolutely beautiful and devastating.
The entire “So” album is flawless. Another song from this album you should hear is “Mercy Street.” 💙
My favorite song on "So."
My favorite album, ever!
My fave on the album. 💕🇨🇦
its amazing to think thats the same voice that did wuthering heights, they are very different. Kate Bush's range is amazing.
And of course Kate's track's Get Out Of My House, The Morning Fog, Heads We're Dancing. As you say, an amazing range.
It was one of the most beautiful live things I have ever seen and heard!
dang! that had to have been amazing!!
@@KarynJustice Their voices blended so perfect. Pretty sure I was not the only one shook with the feels that day!
😳
Peter Gabriel’s album/cd “So”is his masterpiece. Kate is a legend herself as the world is now finding out.
It's also Tony Levin's masterpiece. The bass playing on that album is the stuff of legend!
I have loved this song since it came out. I have probably heard it hundreds of times, but with everything going on right now in the world and in life - tears are streaming down my cheeks. Peter Gabriel has one of the most distinct and amazing voices I have ever heard and Kate Bush is a legend.
One of the greatest, most brutally honest songs that has ever penetrated my ears. I love Pete Gabriel. I love Kate Bush. I looove them together.
Jamel, don't be surprised if you get a load of stories of how this song got people through personal crises
Here's one more (mine)
I used to work on a chemical plant. Worked there 20 years, the workmates were a great crew.
We were told it was shutting down, then we were told that a Dutch entrepreneur wanted to buy the plant.
We had all got our hopes up, then the works number 1 told us it had all fallen through, that was it.
I put the radio on and this was the first song played
Still makes me cry 24 years later
Keep up the good work
Tony
This song saved my life after a bad car accident, I was tempted to take my own life and this song was recommended on youtube. Without it I am very sure I would've taken my own life. Every time I hear this song I break down and cry.
STUNNING.........JUST STUNNING😍❤️😍!!!!! Great reaction Jamel.......you OBVIOUSLY feel music not just hear it!!!👍❤️
This is high art. In my opinion, the most beautiful music video ever created. Two very distinct, emotive voices from two of the most original artists performing a timeless song with deep, profound lyrics. Love your thoughtful reaction, Jamel.
They're so close together, it's as if both souls are combining as one...a VERY lucky man you are, Mr. Gabriel.
Kate Bush!!!
Cloudbusting
Running Up That Hill
Sensual World
This Woman's Work
The bassist on this is Tony Levin, who's been on all of Peter's solo albums, as well as live concerts. He's also a long standing member of King Crimson, and arguable one of the finest bassists you've never heard of because his style is very much to be that hidden support beam that holds everything up.
I had totally forgotten King Crimson. Thank you.
Did not know this. Cool.
Levin deserves to be much better known. I loved his work with Peter and with KC
i wouldn't be surprised would the reverse be true.
on YT somewhere there's a video of a Gabriel concert in South America some years back.
I'm not crying, I just have something in my eye. 😥
😢. I Feel the same. Happy tear though, Tear that only love can bring.
I'm crying. ^-^
Hay fever
I *am* crying
This song saved my life, more than once.
Probably the best duet I've ever heard. Just incredible. The video is just magnetic....
Peter Gabriel is one of my favorites. Can you please do a reaction to Biko? One of the most powerful songs I've ever heard. Thank you!
Biko is such an amazing song. When he played Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, during the SO tour, he ended the concert with Biko...and the crowd sang the song for at least a good 5 minutes after he left the stage!
Great suggestion!
@@FarrellMcGovern Hey Farrell, I was at that concert too! The Red Rain intro was awesome and the concert got better and better as it progressed. Was Youssou N'Dour in Ottawa that night when Peter sang In your eyes? Cheers
Agree, hardly any response on Biko, while it is as an amazing heartbreaking song as this one. They say it propelled the change in South Africa
This song in the early '80s literally saved my life. Literally. I listened to it over and over and over and over again. And I chose to live.
Without a doubt my favorite Peter Gabriel song, Don't give up, we need this message to get through 2020.
This song brings me to me knees at times. I absolutely love this duo. Hugging for the entire video just gets me.
I wish I could get a hug that lasted six minutes...
That is such a tragic story, I'm sure glad that you found peace, and have healed .
I am so sorry for your loss. I can't imagine how difficult that must have been - and, I'm sure, still is. ❤️
Did you know:
Peter Gabriel was the original singer of Genesis. Phil Collins was the drummer.
Yes:)
Oh I most definitely do know!
And Mike Rutherford on guitar, who went on to form "Mike and the Mechanics".
@@lizhall746 you know more then me. I think I heard that as a trivia question, once.
@@_Slicedbread lol
The phrases Kate sings are the things Peter's first wife Jill would say to him when he was feeling low.
Ok, then " Solsbury Hill " could be you next stop on the train.
The slow version of "Here Comes the Flood" is haunting too.
Solsbury Hill needs the backstory of why the song was written.... its so much more impactful when put against the backdrop of him making the decision to leave Genesis at the beginning of their fame..
My favourite
I always think it's Cyndi Lauper singing this.
And "Red Rain"
The ability of some people to write timeless music just knocks me out. PG, Sting, Lennon...outstanding music! (ps Peter and Paula secret world live version also amazing!)
The divine feminine speaks to us through Kate Bush. This song saved my life.
I was very familiar with this song and even tho it was released in the mid 80s- when 911 happened and I was on my way home from work I hit play on my cassette player and this song started to play -- it fit so well with how I was feeling that day -- it found a whole new place in my heart
Jemel: “This is deep man”
Me: “Peter’s deep” ❤️
This is one of the songs on my mom's memorial cd. She loved this song and played it often before she passed
Such a wonderful song addressing the power of support and love in a truly beautiful relationship.
When my father had lost his entire life's savings, he was desperate and suicidal...he would play this song over and over and over again. To this day, this song brings me back to that time and tears. Luckily he had us to keep him from 'giving up'.
This song has helped me get through this year even when I've wanted to give up & disappear. I haven't given up. I'm still here
💗
Kate Bush is a treasure ! On this song she sings multiple vocals stacked up that gives it such a full sound...
This song got me through years of depression. It’s sad and uplifting at the same time. Gabriel sang how I was feeling and Bush lifted me up.
I saw Peter in London when he did the "So' tour in 2013. When he got to this I looked around the place and half the people had tears in their eyes. Including me. A wonderful reaction to a fabulous song.
"Okay guys - for the video I just want to hug Kate Bush for five minutes"
"Don't we all Peter, don't we all..."
"It's a tough job but someone's got to do it!"
Who wouldn't want to hug a lovely lady like her, for twice as long?! ❤
😆
@@CrochetCrochetJoyJoy Yes, and I’m sure Kate Bush was NOT complaining about hugging Peter Gabriel for five minutes either. Or am I merely projecting?
Surprised to see this review, I thought this tune was lost and forgotten. The video device of the singers rotating in embrace, each facing camera as they deliver their vocal is so simple and so perfect for the tune.
Every time I listen to this, I tear up and the hairs on my arms raise.
The line that pushes me over the edge is:
"Drove the night toward my home; the place that I was born, on the lakeside…As daylight broke, I saw the earth, the trees had burned down to the ground."
I hope your life is at peace now🙂
“This Women’s Work” by Kate Bush is devastatingly beautiful.
Peter Gabriel is a master of blending the human experience with music. This song will never not bring a tear to my eyes.
A song I have listened to several times when I was thinking of killing myself, just so someone would be on my side. Tears every time I hear this, but still love it, and so much more. Thank you Jamel.
EDIT: It was 30 years ago or so, in high school.
I'm glad you're still here.
He cares.
🧡
Never give up, you’d be missed. 🌷
Don't give up.
This song means a lot to me. I’ve been a fan of Peter Gabriel for a long time. This was my favorite song from him. Then in 2009, I was diagnosed as HIV+. This song became my mantra, managing the disease. Even beyond the chorus, the lyrics give me comfort as well.
This song was a lifeline for me in my teenage years. I'm sure I'm "not the only one".
If only this song and video could be played for those who most need it in their deepest hour of crisis
You are an angel to those alone, gifting your concern and advice. Merry Christmas from your bros in Buffalo!~
Merry Christmas from across the border in Toronto! 🎄
Merry Christmas from New Mexico!
Glad you have such great friends
This was written when a lot of coal mines were closing in Great Britain. Gabriel has always had his eye on things happening in the world.
"Especially the way they were just holding each other throught the whole video..."
"Cause, through everything, all the lyrics, he was singing and saying, he was still being held."
That's a beautiful thing to notice. This is why we like you :-)
This songs hits you a whole different way when you've grown older and experienced moments like these. I still get that little surge when the gospel piano cuts in.
That's the legendary Richard Tee on piano
Check out Kate's This Woman's Work.
Stunning
I requested this one a while ago, I hope he gets around to it 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
I only first listened to this brilliant song a year or so back even though I was around back in 1989. I think I was too busy listening to S/A/W music at the time😁
One of my favs, check out the cover by Maxwell also
I love that song! First heard it in a Kevin Bacon movie "She's Having A Baby"
