Those background vocals you so aptly picked out were a first in the recording industry. Those are all Karen and her brother Richard doing the first multi-tracking. There's a great video here on RUclips showing exactly how they did them. The record company loved it because they didn't have to hire several vocalists. The Carpenters were the first to do a few things, like put a distorted guitar solo in a ballad on "Goodbye to Love". And yeah, Karen was one of the best vocalist's of all time. This song by the way, was a commercial for a bank. It depicted a young married couple starting out in life. Richard heard the thirty seconds of it and believed he could make it a hit.
Love your reactions. You know music and I appreciate that. Good luck bro.

Little did we know how much Karen was struggling mentally and the pain those thoughts were causing her to live with. It's amazing how someone so talented and so beautiful could feel that she was so "less" of a person than everyone else. This is part of an interview with Richard Carpenter and Terry Gross about their harmonizing:
GROSS: That's the signature harmonies at the end of "Close to You."
Richard Carpenter, is that your voice and Karen Carpenter's voice
    overdubbed many times?
Mr. CARPENTER: Yes, Terry, it's a four-part harmony, and it's tripled. So obviously, it's 12 vocal parts, 12 voices.
Cool idea with your seed boxes! That's a very thoughtful idea to spread to everyone. Thanks for your reaction to these two beautiful voices from the 70's. I enjoyed listening. Take care and be well. Peace.

Karen and Richard Carpenter were brother and sister. Originally, she was the band's drummer. On this and other songs, they went back in post production and recorded their own backing tracks. This is why the harmonies are so smooth. Sadly, in 1983, Karen passed away from complications brought on as a result of anorexia nervosa. She was just 32 years old. This song, released by the duo in 1970 on the B-side of their album 'All My Life', was written by Paul Williams and Roger Nichols. It was discovered by Richard Carpenter when, while watching an ad for Crocker Bank, the tune was used as the background music for the commercial. The song remains a popular and well known Carpenters tune, and even today, is heard at many wedding events.

Two other absolutely mind blowing performances that I would recommend reacting to are:
Dimash: SOS. Live on, I Am a Singer. There is good reason why many people consider Dimash the best singer alive today.
Marcelito Pomoy's cover of, The Prayer. Live on Wish. He is just an amazing and unique talent. Perhaps the only one in the world who can do what he does.

It is truly a blessing to see/hear young people visiting music that has been tucked-away for decades, and now resurfacing on YT. Many people reviewing Soft Rock and Soul lately, and some of the best ones recorded in years 1969-1971. Check out: Carpenters, 5th Dimension, Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway. America was in the throws of the Vietnam War, and the baby-boomers were now 20-something, and ready to love their way to a happier place.
It was also a great time for folk, singer/songwriters: James Taylor, Carol King, Jim Croce, Simon/Garfunkel. All were amazing musicians, meaningful lyrics, and deeply reflective. Something we could use alot more of these days...

Karen started playing the drums they wanted her to come out from the drums so the audience could see her. Karen heard someone say she was a little fat and she heard it and began an eating disorder. You can see and hear her pain in the music. Still to this day he supports her memory. The Carpenters came out it was refreshing to hear something different. She had one of the most purest voices ever recorded and will ever be remembered for it. She and her brother wrote and sang many beautiful songs. Brother and sister duo.. He was a piano prodigy and amazing music arranger.. She was a natural at the drums- her true love and passion- but once it was “discovered “ what a perfect angelic voice she had, that’s what she became known for, “One-take Karen” had perfect pitch and never hit a wrong note.
Unfortunately her perfectionism extended to her view of her body, and she became severely anorexic, 5’4 and got down below 90 lbs.
Some believe that the pressure to get out from behind her beloved drum set and be front and center, she felt more “visible” and self-conscious. She complained that “out front” people could see “every pound”
She died as a direct result of her anorexia, years of starving herself damaged her heart. In the end she sought help but they used IV nutrition to put 30 lbs on her in a couple weeks, that was the final stress her heart could take.
Anorexia was not really understood at the time, her death brought public awareness to it for the first time

This was a brother sister group. Richard wrote most of their songs and could play just about any instrument especially piano. He had great background vocals too. Karen had the voice of an angel! So beautiful. She played a mean drum too! Unfortunately Karen died very young from anorexia. Her death brought the disease to the forefront. Can't tell you how many weddings this song has been played at. Take care and thanks

Karen and Richard Carpenter are brother and sister. Karen died tragically in February of 1983 from a heart attack due to a years long battle with anorexia.

Richard Carpenter was a young music prodigy; Karen was just a kid sister struggling to get some of the attention lavished on her brother by their parents. She tried to learn a couple of instruments and ended up drumming in her school marching band. While Richard was playing classical piano and experimenting with jazz, Karen was falling in love with the drums and managed to persuade her parents to buy her a small kit. She was soon good enough to persuade Richard to let her be the female drummer in a jazz trio he was forming, which would be unusual today and almost unheard of back then.
The family had moved to California in her early teens to further Richard's music career but both he and Karen were a little 'square' for what was then the 'happening' place for teenagers. Jazz was niche music and certainly wasn't going to make him a big star but Richard would adapt to an industry now influenced by the 'British Invasion'. Karen quite possibly already had insecurities emanating from the family dynamic . . . now, as well as a parent-pleasing sibling, she also had to compete as a California 'chick'. Worse still, Richard would write songs and arrangements for her to sing when she was happier in the background somewhat safe from unfavourable scrutiny. Nevertheless, she remained the dutiful sister, which she continued to do as they morphed into a short-lived pop band with a couple of Richard's college pals.
According to Richard, he felt like an arrangement he had come up with might sound better if Karen sang it in a lower register. They tried it and "magic happened". He knew exactly what needed to be done; Karen - reluctant though she may be - would have to ditch the drums for a position front and centre in a new venture called Carpenters (never THE Carpenters). Karen had other ideas. She didn't want to let her brother down but in her heart she was a drummer who sang on some numbers. She would soon come to realise that her voice was the main attraction; a notion that discomfited her because of Richard's major role in arranging and often writing and producing their output. Never one for bare midriffs, mini skirts or plunging necklines, she was also very attached to the refuge of her drum kit. It took a team effort to entice her out but their act would always incorporate an extra drum kit she could retreat to.
She was good too. A 1975 poll in Playboy, which admittedly might be inherently skewed towards a pretty girl, rated Karen's drumming above the likes of Ginger Baker, Keith Moon and John Bonham, who was displeased enough to remark: "She wouldn't last 10 minutes on a Led Zeppelin number!" She apparently made a start on proving him wrong but thought better of it after a few minutes to kill the debate. But she was a young, attractive female pop-star and inevitably judged for the way she looked, which can best be described as like the transplant to 60s/70s California she was. Maybe her insecurities were formed at home but nourished by celebrity. Her untimely demise marked the moment the word anorexia improved the vocabulary of many of us. I can only say we should be thankful we had her before the social media age, which would have destroyed her before she ever got started.
This specific song is one Richard first heard as a TV ad featuring a young couple buying their first home, facilitated by a Crocker Bank mortgage. He recognised the singer as Paul Williams, who was coincidentally signed to the same label. Richard contacted Paul to ask if what he'd heard was part of a complete song. It really wasn't but Carpenters had had a recent number one with a Bacharach/David song so lyricist Williams, who was yet to have a hit, was inspired to write the rest almost overnight. He would not regret it as it became almost as big a hit for Richard and Karen and continues to earn him royalties even today as a wedding video favourite. The harmonies, as in most of their songs, were Richard and Karen multi-tracked after Richard had studied the similar technique of Les Paul and Mary Ford.

This song started life as a commercial jingle for a bank. Peter, Karen's brother and the musical genius of the group, contacted the writer and had him rework it for them to release on their album.

Richard and Karen Carpenter, brother and sister, from Downey, California. Richard did all of the arrangements and producing. There was a made-for-TV movie of their lives (it's probably available here on RUclips or some other platform). In the 1970's, there was not a couple who got married that did not play this song at their wedding or at the reception.
