      It's good you like them but a shame it's a guilty pleasure. Being 55 myself, I've been listening to this genre since 1970 being brought up on this stuff. I've never given myself a label, can listen to AC/DC one minute and switch gears to the Carpenters, then Barry Manilow, the Bee Gees, the Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, then ZZ Top all within an hour. I love music.

      I don't think a lot of young people are used to hearing vocals that are not auto-tuned and heavily produced. Karen's vocal control and timber was world class. With bands like The Carpenters, less is more. She was never one to "over sing" a song, which is popular now with women like Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Mariah Carey, and many more. She never really belted out songs, and tended to keep keep her voice in a quieter, vulnerable, and soulful range.

      Annie Haslam of the outstanding prog rock band Renaissance,.... otherwise, I know of no other that can compare with sweet Karen’s vocal work.

    • @b-radg916
      @b-radg916 4 года назад +2

      @@noumenon6923: I wasn't familiar with Renaissance, so just listened to five or six of their songs. Annie Haslam has a good voice, but in no way should it be compared to Karen Carpenter's, in my opinion.

    • @noumenon6923
      @noumenon6923 4 года назад

      Bradley Gong : I have all of Renaissance’s albums (and have Carpenters as well) and listened to each one dozens of times,.... and must disagree. Haslam’s range and ability to complement with precision much more complex music (progressive rock) than The Carpenters, imo earns her the slight victory.

    • @b-radg916
      @b-radg916 4 года назад

      Michael Gibbons: Part of the disagreement could come from why I think Karen's voice is amazing. Hers is my definition of a "pure" voice… she doesn't push air, just voice. It's a VERY rare quality. Karen's definitely isn't the best voice for all music, but it still blows my mind, even with their unexciting songs. Maybe I'd need to hear more Renaissance, but from what I heard, Annie didn't blow my mind.

    • @noumenon6923
      @noumenon6923 4 года назад

      Bradley Gong : Yes, I agree completely about Karen. I think it would take an investment of time into Renaissance to make a fair comparison,... and progressive rock is a different genre.

    The saddest thing about Karen’s death is she was in RECOVERY from anorexia. She was NORMAL weight when she died. Her heart was just too damaged by the years of starvation. Her voice is considered one of the great female voices EVER.

      Drieux Koeppel yes, but she was also as much a victim of manipulation by the record industry and her handlers. She was a painfully shy girl, and never wanted to be the lead singer. In fact she just wanted to play her drums and be a backing vocal singer. But everyone could see what a huge talent she was, and they pushed her out in front, because they knew she was the real star behind the act. We shall never know what would have happened if they left her to continue doing what she liked most, but I like to think she would have made it.

      I stand corrected. BUT the autopsy indicated it was an overdose of ipecac, not Synthroid, although she was also taking Synthroid. “....ipecac poisoning...”. I’m an RN. She had CHF (Congestive Heart Failure). Extremely rare in someone so young. She WAS taking TEN Synthroid a day. It was likely a combo of all the above. The official autopsy was ipecac poisoning, but I’m not interested in quibbling. She was a deeply ill person, who couldn’t stop damaging herself. And she DID take more than one drug to “control” her weight. How very very very sad. Thanks for the clarification!

      I'm so happy with your response to the Carpenters. I was a member of their fan club. I am a black woman who loves the Carpenters. Check out more tunes from them,you won't be disappointed. Karen had made a solo album, before she died. I recommend it also, it's titled:Karen Carpenter. I just hate she had to die,and so young. All of that talent. She could have given us so much more. Her friend Dionne Warwick said:"Karen's voice was like satin". So smooth. I too close my eyes while listening to Karen,,so relaxing. I grew up with their records. I've been a big fan for a long time, from 1970. I like your review! Your alright with me! A fan from Detroit! One more thought they also recorded "Mr.Postman",, the Motown hit by the Marvelletes,the Carpenters hit went to number one on the charts!

    Richard Carpenter was an excellent songwriter. "We've Only Just Begun"was originally a tv ad for a bank showing a couple getting married. Richard and the original writer of the ditty turned it into The Carpenters signature song. The story of Karen was a sad one. Her skeleton like body was found on the floor of her closet op cit People magazine and The NY Daily News. In the tv movie about Karen when the door opened seeing her was very disturbing. I had no idea what her life was life was like until the film. Her voice is so beautiful that it made a sad song "Hurting Each Other" more depressing. I consider their 1st "Greatest Hits" one of the best LP/ cassette /cd I have..

    Great choice! Karen Carpenter's story is sad, but the music will live on.
    My suggestion:
    Fleetwood Mac "Rhiannon" or "Sara". The lead vocal and lyrics were written by : Stevie Nicks.
    She amazing! Definitely one of my major influences.

      I believe songwriter Paul Williams wrote this commercial jingle for Crocker Bank. Richard loved the jingle and asked permission from Paul to use as Carpenter song which became their first big hit. Richard & Karen created background harmonies with over-dubbing.

    I'm glad you enjoyed this song. Her voice is very soothing. There's just no one like her. Her brother Richard did the arrangements for their music and was also very talented singing harmonies and playing the piano.
