When i first saw set pics of her in that yellow dress it crossed my mind she might actually be from that era, but then i remembered that both the Doctor and Ruby have been seen sporting numerous costumes, including period clothes. It could be very interesting seeing a companion from the nearish past for a change. It could play into what she thinks of modern day as well as all the space and time stuff.
Yes, there is always the chance that she just got the outfit from the TARDIS wardrobe …. But I’m really hoping that’s not the case.
I hope it’s a historical companion!
Absolutely.
No reason why a companion has to be contemporary to be a relatable "audience insert".
Jamie and Leela's reactions to a modern milieu were really interesting (although Leela was actually from a socially reverted future).
Exactly ! Who’s your favourite companion from the past?
@@CulturePhilterI named them both, as it happens. I think the reaction to the unexpected is at least as important as contemporary relatability. With so many of the stories set in the present day that benefit can really work well. In fact, the "fish out of water" idea works just as well from a future perspective - eg Zoe and Romana.
@@Pooter-it4yg yes it can. It’s different but definitely also works as long as they are not super knowledgeable about the past. (Like Jack, River and Nardole were)
Lovely video. I completely agree that the opportunities associated with having a companion from the past are very exciting. Jamie and Victoria has always been beloved companions and work well in their stories.
Absolutely.
Belinda was a popular name from 2005-2013, so she might not be from the 50s.
Was it? I guess that covers the period where I was no longer a kid myself but hadn’t started HAVING kids yet so might explain why I’ve not encountered the name in a modern setting.
There was a character on Grange Hill with that name back in 1982. Also there's Ms Carlisle of the Go Go's.😂
I really wanted Victorian Clara as a full-time companion. That was a real missed opportunity for the show.
Me too. I believe that was the original plan but Moffat was convinced out of it
@@CulturePhilter Such a shame.
Jamie is one of the GOAT for a Companion and he wasn't from Modern Day Earth!!!
If we had this *said above* or a Companion from a Different Part of the World *Give some people who aren't in the UK a bit of Love* Tegan was one of the longest Companion time and she was from *my area* Australia...
I just really wanted for 1 Full Season Ethier *more would be lovely* for a Change!!!
Jack, Nardole, River and Missy weren't in the TARDIS Full Time, I wanted a Full Time Companion from a Different Time or Place!!!
Yes someone just not-british would also make another nice change.
The whole modern era has been very conservative in terms of companions. I mean, the Doctor has the whole of space and time, and keeps ending up in London and Cardiff! I'd love a non-human companion in the new era, but baby-steps I guess.
The whole RTD thing of having the companion as the audience POV character is only true for neurotypicals. When I saw neurodivergent fans exploring the character of DW as ND, it suddenly made sense to me how I don't get the companion's perspective! 😅🐕🦺🎧🏳🌈♾
Hey, if my theory video from a couple of weeks ago turns out to be correct then maybe Ruby is actually not of this world.
Probably not for all neurotypicals either. I'm not really sure why characters need to be analogous to viewers to be worth following -- and no companion ever has matched up with all viewers. I remember _Lost_ was going to kill the Jack character off at the beginning and have Kate as the leader, and the network said they needed to keep Jack so the audience would have someone to relate to. Why, oh, why would Jack, a rich white male doctor, be relatable to most audience members more than anyone else? Doesn't really make sense.
@@HuntingViolets Ha! I hadn't heard that story. So hilarious what the minority in charge think is universal. It's why they are so disturbed when the main / POV character isn't a wealthy, abled, cis straight white man!
With modern day surrogates, the first main companion I don't think especially needed to be a modern companion was Clara. Bill didn't but we got Nardole, and Dan didn't and doesn't really have an excuse. But I'm not against them being modern day characters. But I'd LOVE them to break from modern day British in any way.
I think it would have been nice to have had a historical companion around series 4.
I think they had Captain Jack and River Song as secondary companions to counteract this reliance on modern day main companions and im not sure they will go further than that. RTD likes to ground the show by making it as relatable as possible to a modern audience and i imagine he'll stick with that.
I think it’s a mistake for him to think we couldn’t relate at all to a companion from the past though.
Also we’ll still have Millie there to be that modern day link so…
I would love to see a companion who isn't from our modern times. Someone from the past would refresh the feel of the show. Just think, we could have the Doctor visit his old companion Jamie in the Highlands of Scotland and offering Jamie's grandchildren a ride in the TARDIS.
Jamie having a guest appearance would be great.
i always presumed Bill Potts real 1st name was Belinda :)
Apparently for a woman it’s often short for Wilhelmina , Willow or Willa.
S’alright name i guess
😂
It's just a name, there are lots of people with uncommon names.
Very true. But paired with the costume we’ve seen her in I think there is at least a strong chance.
Belinda Carlisle….
@@jayanderson9375 who was born in the 1950s
What I’m intrigued to know is if it’s deliberate that Ruby and Rose are both four-letter red things. One played by a Billie, the other played by a Millie. Is RTD just chuckling away to himself in his office?
Not to mention he has cast Susan Twist as a character called Susan who will no doubt be part of some twist in the plot.
Really made me laugh when you mentioned the 2nd and 3rd clara because anyone who hasn't watched new who will be so confused 😂
I did think that when editing. 😂
Any new Disney plus viewers here confused by that? 😄
Thinking about it, beyond Leela, I can't think of a companion that any of the doctors had that wasn't either an alien, or from modern day (well, the 60s, 70s or 80s) earth..
Vicki, Steven, Jamie, Victoria, Zoe, and Leela. Also Katarina and Sara Kingdom, if you count them as companions.
Quite a few over the classic series
Rose and Martha could be considered ‘old lady’ names too.
Good point. Maybe it’s wishful thinking on my part.
I just hope she is not from modern day because that has been done SO much!
Exactly my thoughts. I get why they would want to kick off this new era with a modern day companion. Relatable for new audiences but if we’re introducing a second companion to be alongside Ruby that’s the perfect opportunity to get someone from the past.
Varada is of South Asian heritage. It's probably Balinder.
Good point. It may be just wishful thinking on my part. I really want a companion from the past
@@CulturePhilter She could still be from the past with that name.
Gonna be honest I don't think she is from the 50s but I do think she is from somewhere other than modern day UK.
A different time period, a different planet or just a different country?
Belinda - bel/ Vinder’s child?
😮😮😮😮😮 …. Genius! Hell I’m tempted to make a video just on that. However unlikely it is to be true.
@@CulturePhilter did also think Lulu Bel (Ruby’s foster sister)
@@CJ-qp7hi oooo maybe. Don’t think the ethnicities match though?
I can't believe Russell named a companion America 1950s. What could it possibly mean.
You typed France originally. Was that a typo of is the edit part of the joke? 😄
I watched the full video and thought the joke would make more sense
Cos everywhere you look these days there's bunch of women in their late 20s/30s hanging out called "Ruby," "Amelia," "Clara," "Rose," and "Martha..." oh sorry no... I'm thinking of the Old Folks Home down the road.
I’m mean… I’m from Essex, I would t be surprised to meet a young Ruby here.
But you do have a point with the others.
@@CulturePhilter Funnily enough I;ve had this conversation, or a variation of it, with my kids, with me asking if the compaions names sounded old fashioned to them...
None of my daughters friends (she's 20) or anyone she knows from school or at Uni is a "Rose" or an "Amelia" she knows an "Amy" but that's her full first name its not shortened... and I think she said that she's never knowingly met a Clara.
But my son who's 15 knows three "Roses" and an "Amelia" in his year at school... makes you think.. maybe my hometown has more Who fans than I thought.
I know a couple of people around my age (50s) considered Belinda as a kids'name when they were in their 20's after Ms Carlisle and "Heaven is a place on Earth" which would have put them in their 30s now.
Though one couple had the surname Gaye, and I *almost* convinced them that Enola was a good name for a girl... they thought it was just the title of a song...one of my friends hurriedly explained it to them that I was being a twat, before they ran off and started ordering embroided bibs and baby clothes...
@@CulturePhilter There were two young actresses named Ruby on the first season of _Bridgerton._ Amelia went by Amy because she didn't like how "fairy tale" her name sounded. Rose Leslie _(Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones)_ is in her 30s. Rose Williams from _Reign_ is 30. I mean, anybody can have any name at any time (after it's in existence, at least, and in a time-travel show , maybe even before), of course. RTD is definitely fond of the name Rose, which he's used several times at this point _(Bob & Rose,_ anyone?) and Ruby is basically a code name for Rose (four letters beginning with R, a shade of the color red), and the characters are 19-year-old blondes. I'm just rambling.
But anyway, it's fun to speculate. On a side note, I used to not like the name Martha, but then I "met" Martha Jones and now I love it.
@@andrewtomlinson5237 - I did suggest the name Clara for my daughter but my wife wasn’t keen and vetoed it straight away.
@@CulturePhilter We named our daughter Elizabeth, I'd been holding it back as a trump card as we'd gone through a load that we couldn't agree on... and it was the one I really wanted.
I wanted to spell it with an S rather than a Z, but the Mrs wasn't keen on that so the Z was a compromise.
I've had to explain that EVERY time either my daughter or I have told someone that she was named after Liz Sladen not the Queen, and some smart arse has replied "Bu she spelled it with an S".
My thing here is sge will STILL be secondary to Millie by what we have heard from RTD with Ruby being the kost ikportant thing ever everrr ever in seasin 2 so ....yeah it still feels RTD cant fully commit
It does sound like Ruby will factor heavily into the story arc again. But I don’t think that necicerrily means that Varada will be secondary in the same way Jack, Mickey, etc will be secondary.
More like Rory in season 6. He was a fully fledged full-time companion by then.
@@CulturePhilter yeah I get nervous though that RTD won't fully commit to it as such everything crossed it works out but season 1 hasn't aired and already we know season 2 will be shaping up like
@@CulturePhilter I hope she won't be secondary. That would be a bad look, to put it mildly.
You say the new companions name is Belinda? That probably means that she is from the 1980's and played in band called the Go-Gos
😄
Soooo…. Sounds like Verada will end up as just a secondary companion?
I’m not so sure. Sounds like once she’s introduced she’s sticking around. If that’s early enough in Season 2/series15 then I think that’ll count her as equal status companion. Hopefully she also continues on after Ruby leaves
Let’s hope so!
I think Ruby might end up being the secondary companion in season 2
I assume you know this by now since we have more information but just in case you don't. Varada is the main companion of season 2 and Ruby is in 3 episodes
If it happens at a location shoot RTD doesn't mind it being in the public domain, it's how he's always worked. Why does Belinda indicate a 1950s character?
It sounds like a very 1950s name. Not saying that’s the only reason she might have that name. But paired with the costume I think there’s a chance.
Could partly be wishful thinking too.
@CulturePhilter there's also the Miami based episode, could this be her introduction? *pure speculation
@@kaledmasterme could be.
@@CulturePhilter If the character is in the 1950s, in her 20s or 30s (the actress is in her 30s but could easily pass for 20s), she would have been born in the 1920s or 1930s. I'm not saying it doesn't apply, but a 1950s name is not what you should be seeking. (It would be cool if she was from the past, though.)
@@CulturePhilter Could be a crew member name, but that doesn't mean the character isn't from the past.
It's Myrtle! 😂
Who?
@@CulturePhilter I hadn't reached the point where you revealed the name so threw in a 50s name! ;0)
@@robalexander8065 ahhhhh 😄
Belinda wow thanks very much 👍😮su garden
No worries
@@CulturePhilter thanks SU garden
That's going to great next year Belinda SU garden
Mundy
That’s assuming she’s playing the same character when she returns.
I think it might be more of a Freema Agyeman / Karen Gillan situation where they played a different character and then later were hired as a new companion (sometimes with reference to the other ones like it being Martha’s cousin)
Many the Doctor will say something like “oh I think I met one of your dependents”
So another Bill
How so? Bill was a modern day companion.
@@CulturePhilter I mean the name bill is a short version of Belinda
@@markcolgan3262 oh is it, I would shorten it to Bel personally.
No, it would be short for Wilhelmina. It that was my name, I’d call myself Bill, too.
Bro its a dead franchise, look at the destruction of doctor who 💀
Because when one of the world largest entertainment companies signs a deal to distribute your programme worldwide… that usually means a show is dead, right? 🙄
