To quote our best boy, Wilfred Mott, "Oh, that would make my christmas."
I’d love to see what she’s up to now.
@CulturePhilter I just hope they show how bad ass and clever she was, and that she has been a lone wolf for so long, considering how we've seen how bright she was when left away from the Doctor at points. I'm also like a mother that's like "I just want to know you're safe. Have you been eating well?" Big Martha fan.
@@Daniel_Nye Is she wearing her coat? :D
@@Daniel_Nye she had a few appearances in Torchwood audios too. Have you heard those?
@CulturePhilter No but I will check up on that
I'm really excited for this, I do wonder how they'll handle the mickey marriage. (I never really liked that to begin with before the whole Noel Clarke stuff came out) but really happy Doctor Jones is back
I suspect she’ll just have a throw away line about an “ex husband” or being divorced without actually mentioning his name.
@@CulturePhilter I would expect that too. They aren't going to keep him around in the background and I don't see a recast happening.
She should have stuck with Tom Ellis! Or maybe she's realised she's just too bad-ass to be pinned down
@@YourQueerGreatAuntie maybe he was too much of a devil for her. 😄
I don't normally bother with these types of rumour vids but I wouldn't object to Martha returning. All of RTD's original companions got a much bigger shot at more screen time, so it would be nice if Freema/Martha got more than just a couple of small appearances. Whatever the spin-off is, I hope they aim for a Doctor Who type of family audience, not aimed at just kids, teens or adults (like Torchwood).
I quite like the way they covered the different age groups of audiences with the original RTD era spin-offs. I wouldn’t be against them replicating it. But I’m equally at ease with them just going for a broad audience too.
Martha and Mickey Smith have teenage kids but before they graduated academy Martha and Mickey had a falling out and they are now divorced with joint custody
I kind of hope they don’t have kids. Makes the separation so much cleaner. 😄
@@CulturePhilter Plus it keeps Martha as freelance as she needs to be!
I remember the other day thinking about how much I miss Martha, and how she should come back with UNIT in Season 2 or 3
For her marriage, I say they treat it the same way they treated her engagement with Tom Milligan in series 4. Ignore it. Never explain what happened, and act like it didn't exist.
I think a quick throw away line about an ex-husband would suffice. Rather than completely ignoring just done dwell on it or mention him by name.
Martha coming back would be good I actually thought she was great in Torchwood when she appeared. Maybe her and Gwen have set up something in combination with Unit.
She popped up in a couple of Torchwood audios too. They were pretty good as well.
I want Martha back asap! Also with Gwen and Amy Pond (somehow lol).
i could see, if this is filming in September, it being more likely to fill the gap between s2 and s3, instead of s1 and s2.
s2 will likely air at a similar time to s1 (april/may time?) and this could be autumn 2025?
Yep. That’s what I think.
Think they may try to air season 2 slightly earlier in year though to see if it improves ratings.
@@CulturePhilter yes i could see that.
@@joeyunderwood Maybe it'll be something like this:
Joy to the World: Dec 25th 2024
S2: April 2025
The War Between the Land and the Sea: August 2025
Christmas Special: Dec 25th 2025
I really hope this is true, this sounds amazing and I think Martha is a really good choice to lead a spin off too! It's also worth mentioning that currently Freema Agyeman is doing a theatre production currently which runs until August which is just before The War Between the Land and the Sea is set to start filming in September so this does line up with her availability! And The War Between the Land and the Sea is practically confirmed at this point with recent production listings and most recently a line producer mentioning it on her CV as well as confirming that Dylan Holmes Williams will be directing which is awesome, 73 Yards and Dot and Bubble were gorgeously directed so I think this series will look stunning! And I do think this'll be serialized in a similar manner to Children of Earth and Flux. I am very excited for this actually though since the fact this spin off exists is confirmed beyond doubt I wonder when the BBC will officially announce it (and hopefully confirm that Martha's back), I feel like they should do that soon since it is practically confirmed. It's awesome to have spin offs again because I think the Whoniverse has so much potential and all kinds of stories waiting to be told and I think a spin off like this will help with the wait between series of the main show much like back in the 2000s with Torchwood and the Sarah Jane Adventures, they helped bridge the gaps! I'm going to guess this'll air after Season 2 and before next year's Christmas special, maybe in the Autumn time!
I suspect that if they don’t announce it in the next few weeks it’ll be as soon as they start filming in September as location set pics will start popping up.
I felt RTD did a good job first time around of introducing the spin-offs and then finding a way of tying them into the main show. However, Torchwood series 1 was a bit of a misfire, series 2 a big improvement and then Children of Earth was very strong, so it might take time for any spin-off to reach it's potential. It'll be interesting to see if this will be aimed at a younger or older demographic or whether it'll simply go for the broad audience the main show already targets.
As for the fantasy/supernatural vs sci-fi debate, I'd have to say on the evidence of what we've had so far from RTD2, I'd rather they focus on the latter.
Always liked Martha though, not the strongest companion but i feel that's largely down to the show not doing her justice, her characters' maturity and intelligence being undercut by the unrequited love for the doctor angle. They went some way in series 4 and her Torchwood appearances to making up for this but i feel there's room for more from her. A team-up with Gwen Cooper could be fun.
There’s at least one team up with Gwen in the Big Finish audios which is quite good.
Of all the new series companions Martha has the most potential for a return.
When they made Class, they really messed up not having a familiar character in it. They should have booted Clara off the main show sooner and put her in Class to see out her contract.
I imagine her contract was specifically for Doctor Who and they could t just make her go on a spin-off so they would have had to negotiate a new spin-off with her.
@@CulturePhilter Yes maybe. There was talk back in 2008, that Freema Agyeman was supposed to do two series, but when Martha proved ‘less popular’ than Rose, they only had her in five episodes the following year and put her in Torchwood to make up for it. Don’t know how true that is.
@@stephenreed2093 oh, I hadn’t heard that rumor .
There was a brief FHP military team known as the UNFHP aka Foreign Hazard Patrol, as UNIT became too public-
Wait, are you talking real-world or in Doctor Who universe?
I really hope martha returns!
It’d be good to catch up up with her. Out of all the 21st century companions she feels like the one that makes the most sense to check in on.
@@CulturePhilter Yeah agreed
I really hope it is true and Martha is in this, she was a great character, Freema is a great actress, she deserves to lead her own show.
Yes she’s done some interesting stuff since leaving Who as well. Did you see Sense8?
@@CulturePhilter I've been watching it on recommendation of a friend who thought I'd enjoy it, only seen the first season so far but yeah, she was great in that too.
@@ohmydinosare she is. And Sylvester McCoy is in season 2!
@@CulturePhilter spoilers much?
Spoilers are about plot surely, I didn’t say who he was playing or what he was doing.
Bringing Freema back is a easy way to get me interested in this but I wasn't before. For some reason I thought the Silurians were on this too.
They could well be as well.
@@CulturePhilter I think it would be interesting. I don't remember if they interacted with each other in the classic series
@@TurtleDustin I think there was only one story where they did, ‘warriors of the deep’
@CulturePhilter ah yeah. Maybe it's a war between the 2 with Unit caught in the middle
@@TurtleDustin possibly although the source apparently did say the title wasn’t literal. 🤷♂️
The War Between the Land and The Sea*
edit: but i definitely think it’s a provisional title. maybe ‘UNIT: The War Between the Land and the Sea’
edit edit: nvm you corrected it later on
Yeah I hate it when I’m editing and realised I’ve said something wrong. The amount of times I’ve referred to Ruby Sunday as Ruby Song in a video is getting ridiculous now.
@@CulturePhilter i’ve noticed that one too aha
@@joeyunderwood I think it’s because it’s the same initials as River Song - RS . So I start saying by saying Ruby but my brain goes “he started a name with a R sound and next one starts with a S… it MUST be song” 😄
I wish theyd have Clara return for story of her Long Way Round, while she had the TARDIS
A Clara and Ashilda spin off? What would they be doing? Having regular doctor-who episode type adventures?
@@CulturePhilter i refer to the episode where clara was the waitress in the diner. They implied she had her own adventures in 12s TARDIS.
@@Riverwolf1489 yes she had a a TARDIS (not 12’s it was a different TARDIS that she pinched from Gallifrey)
I just mean having the same set up and same type of adventures as the main show might be… dull? Because it’s just the adventures the Doctor could be having. Other spin offs have a different set up (Torchwood is a secret organisation based on earth, Sarah Jane was a journalist with a tag along bunch of school kids who investigated alien threats, Class was based at a school with teenagers dealing with Aliens that came through a rift there)
Not that the Clara spin off would HAVE to be just traveling from planet to planet and time period to time period in a TARDIS like the Doctor does dealing with story of the week. But that’s why I asked, to see if that’s what you meant or if you had an idea to make it not Doctor Who with a different lead.
How has Martha been since her last TV appearance anyway?
She’s had a couple of audio appearances in Torchwood audios but I have a feeling they are set before her End of Time cameo (as she is still working for UNIT in them if I recall correctly) so I don’t THINK there has been anything since that quick scene in TV where she is married to Mickey and working freelance.
Here comes that Martha Jones, SHE’S cool
Are you being sarcastic dude?
I don’t even know anymore
Wait sarcastic in what? I isnt say that exact sentence… do I think it’d be cool to see her again and what she’s up to? Yeah.
She wasn’t my favourite companion but she’s one of the ones it makes sense story wise to bring back. More so than Clara or Amy who you’d have to get pretty convoluted explanations for them to return and they had pretty satisfactory endings to their stories. So even though they were higher on my companion rankings, it makes much more sense to bring back Martha.
@@CulturePhilter its a Simpsons quote my guy
@@bobjordan69 ahhh ok. That went right over my head 🤣
Usuallly a show gets a spin-off when it’s highly successful. I don’t get the reason for this new show when the original doctor Who series is struggling with the lowest ratings ever and coping with all the backlash like it is at the moment.
Perhaps consider that the metrics you are factoring into whether a show is deemed successful by the broadcasters is not correct and is maybe a bit outdated. This is not 20 years ago.
Given that we've not had Dr Who on our TV screens since Peter Capaldi gave up the Tardis wouldn't the ideal spin off actually be DR WHO.
