15 might look at his face the "normal" way if there's ever a standard scene where 14 regenerates into 15, but it's just as likely that he wouldn't bother because he already _knows_ what that face is going to look like, and never forgets a face. (Assuming the theory that they're still part of the same timestream as a stable time loop, and that 14 will eventually regenerate into 15 and get sent back in time to his bigeneration is correct, at least.)
@@MrOmegatronic I agree that 15 may already know what he looks like from being 14, but the only issue I have with that theory is that 15 himself appears confused from the bi-generation (saying "No way!" and "Can someone tell me what the hell is going on here?!"), which wouldn't be the case if 15 already knew everything that happened from 14. Basically, I think it's the same as past multi-Doctor events where past Doctors don't remember the most recent Doctor and the events with them but they still remember everything afterward (hence 15 still benefiting from 14's backward rehab). As for the potential for 14 properly becoming 15 in the future, we'll see if that happens.
@RoamerMonkey at the moment, I'm actually wondering if the bigeneration is the origin point for the Valeyard; it would explain why there were effectively 2 Doctors running around at that point, and certainly _feels_ like something RTD would include in the series.

Capaldis is the Twelfth Doctor. Jodie was the thirteenth. They said that the War Doctor was never "The Doctor", until his short time saving Gallifrey with Ten and Eleven from the Time War. John Hurt was credited as "The Doctor" in "The Name of the Doctor" but in the 50th anniversary, he was credited as "The War Doctor" instead.

I loved when the 11th doctor thought he was a woman and just started panicking about it, and then we had the 13th who actually WAS a woman literally just goes "brilliant!"

and then it actually becomes plot relevant in ‘the girl who died’ when it turns out that he chose that face to remind him of the people he has saved :)
That transition from disappointment or confusion to acceptance has always been a good lesson on how to deal with unexpected changes in our lives. That's why the regeneration gimmick work so well even before Matt Smith spells it out in his last speech as the Doctor. Except for the Sixth who was pompous from the off but that's part of his charm.
Eleven said to someone in the SJ episode where he met back up with Jo and Sarah Jane that he can indeed change colours and genders. His actual confirmed look when he's not in human form is the watcher and the watcher is a all white ghost type character (Adric: The watcher!, Tegan (or Nyssa): HE was the doctor ALL along!)
6: "Each time with diminishing effect. You have nothing to fear." 10: - blows up TARDIS' console chamber and sets it on fire - 12: - sets TARDIS on fire - 13: - has to go outside to avoid blowing up the TARDIS -
@@ericemanwu Ten wasn't resisting it per-say compared to Twelve, Ten was going to say goodbye to everybody that "he" knew, whereas Twelve refused to regenerate until he and his first incarnation helped save the earth again and made the first doctor realize that he will meet him again "the long way around" and that both were weary, tired and ready to regenerate from old age, which is why when you watch Twelves regeneration compared to Tens, Tens does quite a bit of damage but never touches the TARDIS control panel. Twelve's regeneration however DOES hit the TARDIS control panel and the vortex itself, which is why when the newly regenerated thirteen pressed a button, the TARDIS threw her out and just demateralised in front of her whilst she was falling down to earth which thankfully she as Ten said - "I'm still within my twelve hours of my regeneration!", she was able to survive the fall into the train. I think it was a case of Thirteen realizing that she didn't want to damage the TARDIS or it's center control panel as she went outside to regenerate into fourteen.
i just love 11’s post-regeneration scene so much. he’s just literally been born again into an entirely different body while everything is exploding around him and he’s so shocked he just has to check everything’s there before his mind can catch up with him again
They are. Notice how Doctor 7 didn’t even know he’d regenerated until he saw himself in the mirror. He even acted like the 6th Doctor until he discovered he’d regenerated.
Yeah I’m pretty sure it takes a few days for each incarnation to shake off the last one after regenerating. Like how 11 in the 11th Hour was more like a quirky 10th Doctor and he hadn’t fully settled into his “I love bow ties and fezzes” self
They are all essentially the same person, they just pick up a few new personality quirks I always think of Peter's line "I didn't need to, that was me talking, i'm not on the phone I'm right here, you can't see me you look at me but you can't see me"
@@unclekarl5219 I don't think that's what they meant. I think they mean that the doctor is still expecting to see their last face in the mirror so it's a shock when their current one shows up until they get used to it. My personal take (disregarding the timeless child) is that the doctor has ALWAYS mentally pictured themself as Hartnell, at least when not looking in a mirror. He was their first incarnation and the one they spent the longest time as (canonically).
I love how Twelve recognizes this deep meaning of why he had that face, but Six never questions or cares why he got the face of a Gallifreyan guard that shot him and helped "execute" him as the Fifth Doctor. Maybe that should be inserted in a Big Finish audio if it hasn't been already.
I've never watched Doctor Who myself. But I will say I think the idea of having a character that changes faces every time they need a new actor, and they acknowledges that "Yes my face is now different.", giving it an explanation for why this happens, I find that to be an ingenious idea in on itself. And from what I can see and tell, I think each individual actor does a rather phenomenal job on acting the same precise odd way, since they are all the same character, they just regenerate and changes their face every now and then. I love when they give logical in-universe explanations as to why something is or happens.
@@GhostKingDeAngelo A lot of the Classic Who episodes have gone missing over the years. The BBC taped over some. Some foreign TV stations never sent the tapes back. Some where destroyed in fires. Some got stolen. Etcetera etcetera.
Holy jeez Doctor Who references run deep, the scene at the end of the 60th anniversary special with 14 talking about communicating with his eyebrows I thought was just made up as a throwaway line, but it's actually a reference to *another* throwaway line way back in the 70s

It’s explained there that it’s part of his recovery and trauma of the Time War and living as the War Doctor that he always avoids looking at his reflection… and so it’s only after he meets Rose that he feels ready to move on and decides to finally look

In the Day of the Doctor novel, when War regenerates, 9 smashes every mirror in the TARDIS to rack up bad luck for all the people he "killed." My hc is that 9 travels by himself for 100 years (War is approx. 800, also Clive's pictures) before he meets Rose.
I love that instead of just glossing over Capaldi’s recasting, they actually made it a specific plot point. They spent a lot of time focusing on the fact that 12 looks like someone he once knew, and why he unintentionally “chose” that face.
So glad you went with the telesnaps for the first regeneration and not the animation. Seeing the actual actor's face is so much better than that cheap animation, even if it's not full motion.
Thanks for reminding me why I kept the telesnaps, it was at the tip of my head. Yeah, there's nothing that can replace seeing Troughton's physical appearance, even if the animation may look smoother.
I about fell on the floor when the third Doctor says the eyebrows could be quite useful on the planet Delphon(?) where they communicate with their eyebrows.....I miss Capaldi!!!!
Planet Delphon is one planet 12 shouldn't go to... He has Attack Eyebrows, if he goes there, the citizens will consider his face as a declaration of war.
Well if you look at the sum total of what 14 and 15 are wearing, it adds up to what 14 was wearing before, so it makes sense; he didn't get a second set of clothes.
I apparently have been watching too many Doctor Who clips. I had a dream I auditioned to be the next doctor and got the role. I then lasted about 10 minutes before I tripped on something and regenerated.
Favorite bit a lot about the regenerations is that most of the time the new actor kind of has to insult themselves slightly when first starting. 9’s comments about the ears is one of my favorites of those.
I always saw the Doctor’s first reaction to his new appearance and eventually coming to enjoy it as the last of the previous Doctor finally fading away and the new mind setting in.
That multi-doctor interaction was probably the most friendly one Edit: I guess that 5 and 10 partly counts, but that's due to 5 being annoyed with 10 for a while

I think they missed an opportunity with 13 - should have had her see a mirror, "Oh, no. Oh, no, oh, no! Still not ginger! ... I like these eyes though"
I really like the tradition of having the showrunner not just start with the next episode they're under, but actually have them handle the exact moments after the Doctor regenerates
Are we just gonna either forget the fact that literally in 9’s debut he’s BEEN around? Like in Clive’s archives the 9th being on earth is not a first, but however it works lowkey too bc it’s maybe like he’s never wanted to see himself until given the opportunity by chance when they first went to rose’s apartment??
RTD did say that moment wasn't intended for 9 to be seeing his face for the very first time, but I still included it because it is still 9 reacting to his face post-regeneration.
I like to go with Moffat’s day of the doctor novelisation. Out of guilt and self hatred he broke many mirrors in the Tardis. When he does see himself in Rose it may be the first or one of the first few times he’s seen his appearance.
I always theorised that the those adventures are not prior to Rose There's a bit at the end where Rose originally refuses to go and he flies off, maybe he goes on a few adventures (the ones in Clive's Basement and the ones in the current Big Finish series) are set during this period before he goes back to Rose and tells her it travels in time

I found Doctor who in the '70s and Jon pertwee was my first doctor. When I came back a few months later to watch it and I saw Tom Baker, I said who is this clown? That's not the doctor at all! He finally grew on me and I ended up loving him but it was a shock because I didn't understand what the premise of the show was as I'd only seen like two or three episodes before Tom Baker took over the roll.
It's a little awkward but I appreciate how they acknowledge the clothes don't change as well, unlike what happens with some transporter accidents on Star Trek.
When they used Roses/9s theme for 13 I was so excited. After 12s whole Calceus deal I was thinking 13 might have an era wide arc similar to 12s where she’s reminded about Rose due to her face. They looked similar and at the time I thought she was Billie Piper.
My favorite of the old series was Peter Davidson. And then I loved Christopher eccleston. It made me sad when he was only there for one season because I thought he was amazing.
I honestly like that the further into the future you watch, the more likely the Doctors are to disparage their own appearances over the previous Doctors, you can really see the times changing
Regeneration energy basically changed the clothes. But in actual fact, it was RTD who refused for David to wear Jodie's outfit even though in the episode, Sasha wears the clothes briefly as "The Master Doctor" before wearing an amalgam of the previous doctors outfits - seventh doctor's sweater, tenth doctor's coat, fifth doctor's colour changing celery, the first doctor's trousers and the fourth doctor's scarf. He even used the second doctor's recorder whilst stranded after Yaz took the TARDIS back from him in order to get the doctor her body back and put The Master back into his body.
@@RoamerTummy The only ones not to show themselves in their predecessors clothes were third doctor (abit briefly at the beginning of Spearhead from Space where it's shown he's wearing 2nd doctor's outfit after he exits the TARDIS and falls unconscious in the field, Eighth Doctor since he was "presumed dead" after they tried to operate on him and Seven wanted to regenerate but died from anaesthetic after giving the scream which was the reason why Eight was amnesiac and took a long while to regenerate. You could say Fourteen didn't regenerate with thirteens clothes on either.
3rd has always been polite in his mannerisms, which is why he makes a good Doctor in this sense. He's polite and gentlemanly - But that's The Doctor anyway! lol
I'm not sure if this is confirmed, but I like to think it's because 12 is the first of the new regeneration cycle the Time Lords gave him. As the Daleks said, there are rules, and while the Doctor breaks them, there are consequences, like his mind not being set up for another regeneration.
@@lord_egg yeah. Sucks too, because I actually liked Jodie and 13 in a general sense. I liked the contrast between 12, which made sense with him moving on, and even keeping with my thing about the new cycle, I liked the dynamic of 13 being female with how it played with the typical interactions with people, particularly companions. Sad that Chibnall did what he did.

ngl i feel so bad for jodie whittaker's run. i think she wouldve been a great doctor if the writing wasn't as bad as it was for her run. i like how she was always energetic and optimistic like the excited kid in a toy store, but still with a bit of grounded realism and maturity from the 12th doctor. its a shame her run was as badly written as it was, as the dumbasses in the "the doctors a MAN! he shouldn't be a GIRL! HE'S not a CHICK!" crowd will always point to the writing and directing and blame it on the fact that jodie whittaker was the doctor and not on the fact that chris chibnall ran the show like that "edgy" kid you knew in high school that protested everything while not understanding what the protests were about in the first place. sorry, had to vent a bit
She didn't get told though, but she knew it was The Doctor seeing as how she's already met seven incarnations of them - War, Ten, Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen, Fourteen and Fifteen - War was in Day of the Doctor even though he didn't technically meet her Ten was in the Day of the Doctor Eleven was in The Power of Three and then again in Day Of The Doctor Twelve was from the Cybermen episode where it was revealed Missy was The Master Thirteen was from Power of the Doctor Fourteen was from The Giggle Fifteen was from The Giggle and both Legend of Ruby Sunday and Empire of Death. The ones she never met were - First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth and Ninth doctor incarnations.

Eleven said to someone in the SJ episode where he met back up with Jo and Sarah Jane that he can indeed change colours and genders. His actual confirmed look when he's not in human form is the watcher and the watcher is a all white ghost type character (Adric: The watcher!, Tegan (or Nyssa): HE was the doctor ALL along!)

To be fair, 10 was resisting it. 12 was breaking it in again after resisting for a while, and 11 had to deal with going beyond normal numbers.

@@ericemanwu Ten wasn't resisting it per-say compared to Twelve, Ten was going to say goodbye to everybody that "he" knew, whereas Twelve refused to regenerate until he and his first incarnation helped save the earth again and made the first doctor realize that he will meet him again "the long way around" and that both were weary, tired and ready to regenerate from old age, which is why when you watch Twelves regeneration compared to Tens, Tens does quite a bit of damage but never touches the TARDIS control panel.
Twelve's regeneration however DOES hit the TARDIS control panel and the vortex itself, which is why when the newly regenerated thirteen pressed a button, the TARDIS threw her out and just demateralised in front of her whilst she was falling down to earth which thankfully she as Ten said - "I'm still within my twelve hours of my regeneration!", she was able to survive the fall into the train.
I think it was a case of Thirteen realizing that she didn't want to damage the TARDIS or it's center control panel as she went outside to regenerate into fourteen.

They are. Notice how Doctor 7 didn’t even know he’d regenerated until he saw himself in the mirror. He even acted like the 6th Doctor until he discovered he’d regenerated.
Yeah I’m pretty sure it takes a few days for each incarnation to shake off the last one after regenerating. Like how 11 in the 11th Hour was more like a quirky 10th Doctor and he hadn’t fully settled into his “I love bow ties and fezzes” self
I don’t like this take but it makes it so regeneration is death of a person who’s then replaced by someone new, which it isn’t
They are all essentially the same person, they just pick up a few new personality quirks

I think they mean that the doctor is still expecting to see their last face in the mirror so it's a shock when their current one shows up until they get used to it. My personal take (disregarding the timeless child) is that the doctor has ALWAYS mentally pictured themself as Hartnell, at least when not looking in a mirror. He was their first incarnation and the one they spent the longest time as (canonically).

I love how Twelve recognizes this deep meaning of why he had that face, but Six never questions or cares why he got the face of a Gallifreyan guard that shot him and helped "execute" him as the Fifth Doctor. Maybe that should be inserted in a Big Finish audio if it hasn't been already.

Six trying to show peri his reflection by shoving the mirror in her face is so subtle but absolutely hysterical.
I've never watched Doctor Who myself. But I will say I think the idea of having a character that changes faces every time they need a new actor, and they acknowledges that "Yes my face is now different.", giving it an explanation for why this happens, I find that to be an ingenious idea in on itself. And from what I can see and tell, I think each individual actor does a rather phenomenal job on acting the same precise odd way, since they are all the same character, they just regenerate and changes their face every now and then. I love when they give logical in-universe explanations as to why something is or happens.
Yeah, they weave it into the story really well. I recommend you watch the show, especially the modern one. It’s really good.
And every doctor is odd, but they each have different tweaks on it; they're closely related, but distinct, characters.

Holy jeez Doctor Who references run deep, the scene at the end of the 60th anniversary special with 14 talking about communicating with his eyebrows I thought was just made up as a throwaway line, but it's actually a reference to *another* throwaway line way back in the 70s
There's a sort of tragedy to see 9 saw his face only after such a long time cuz of the Time War.
I always kinda thought when War Doctor regenerated into 9, he hopped back to Earth and then that's where he bumped into Rose shortly after

It’s explained there that it’s part of his recovery and trauma of the Time War and living as the War Doctor that he always avoids looking at his reflection… and so it’s only after he meets Rose that he feels ready to move on and decides to finally look

In the Day of the Doctor novel, when War regenerates, 9 smashes every mirror in the TARDIS to rack up bad luck for all the people he "killed." My hc is that 9 travels by himself for 100 years (War is approx. 800, also Clive's pictures) before he meets Rose.
I love that instead of just glossing over Capaldi’s recasting, they actually made it a specific plot point. They spent a lot of time focusing on the fact that 12 looks like someone he once knew, and why he unintentionally “chose” that face.
So glad you went with the telesnaps for the first regeneration and not the animation. Seeing the actual actor's face is so much better than that cheap animation, even if it's not full motion.
Thanks for reminding me why I kept the telesnaps, it was at the tip of my head. Yeah, there's nothing that can replace seeing Troughton's physical appearance, even if the animation may look smoother.
The comedic timing of the transition from peri calling the doctor's clothes dreadful to her getting assaulted by him is fucking gold.

Well if you look at the sum total of what 14 and 15 are wearing, it adds up to what 14 was wearing before, so it makes sense; he didn't get a second set of clothes.

Favorite bit a lot about the regenerations is that most of the time the new actor kind of has to insult themselves slightly when first starting. 9’s comments about the ears is one of my favorites of those.

My favorite moment was from the Three Doctors - when William Hartnell who was so ill his part had to be pre-recorded and only appeared on the scanner in the TARDIS and on Gallifrey saw the second and third versions and commented rather acidly - "oh, so you're my replacements - a dandy and a clown" wonderful bit of scripting!
So many of the early doctors reacting to their face even though they were looking at the camera in the mirror rather than themselves in the mirror.
I think they missed an opportunity with 13 - should have had her see a mirror, "Oh, no. Oh, no, oh, no! Still not ginger! ... I like these eyes though"
I really like the tradition of having the showrunner not just start with the next episode they're under, but actually have them handle the exact moments after the Doctor regenerates

RTD did say that moment wasn't intended for 9 to be seeing his face for the very first time, but I still included it because it is still 9 reacting to his face post-regeneration.
I took it as, he is a time traveller. All the photos and drawings Clive has, has not happened to 9 yet. 9's future adventures into the past,.
I like to go with Moffat’s day of the doctor novelisation. Out of guilt and self hatred he broke many mirrors in the Tardis. When he does see himself in Rose it may be the first or one of the first few times he’s seen his appearance.
I always theorised that the those adventures are not prior to Rose
There's a bit at the end where Rose originally refuses to go and he flies off, maybe he goes on a few adventures (the ones in Clive's Basement and the ones in the current Big Finish series) are set during this period before he goes back to Rose and tells her it travels in time

I found Doctor who in the '70s and Jon pertwee was my first doctor. When I came back a few months later to watch it and I saw Tom Baker, I said who is this clown? That's not the doctor at all! He finally grew on me and I ended up loving him but it was a shock because I didn't understand what the premise of the show was as I'd only seen like two or three episodes before Tom Baker took over the roll.

It's a little awkward but I appreciate how they acknowledge the clothes don't change as well, unlike what happens with some transporter accidents on Star Trek.
When they used Roses/9s theme for 13 I was so excited. After 12s whole Calceus deal I was thinking 13 might have an era wide arc similar to 12s where she’s reminded about Rose due to her face. They looked similar and at the time I thought she was Billie Piper.
My favorite of the old series was Peter Davidson. And then I loved Christopher eccleston. It made me sad when he was only there for one season because I thought he was amazing.

Nah, not really. Kind of similar to 2's clothes also changing when regenerating from 1, so at least it's consistently inconsistent.
My Headcanon is that the toymaker did it.
He gave back the Doctor his most Human and Vulnerable version
Regeneration energy basically changed the clothes. But in actual fact, it was RTD who refused for David to wear Jodie's outfit even though in the episode, Sasha wears the clothes briefly as "The Master Doctor" before wearing an amalgam of the previous doctors outfits - seventh doctor's sweater, tenth doctor's coat, fifth doctor's colour changing celery, the first doctor's trousers and the fourth doctor's scarf. He even used the second doctor's recorder whilst stranded after Yaz took the TARDIS back from him in order to get the doctor her body back and put The Master back into his body.
@@RoamerTummy The only ones not to show themselves in their predecessors clothes were third doctor (abit briefly at the beginning of Spearhead from Space where it's shown he's wearing 2nd doctor's outfit after he exits the TARDIS and falls unconscious in the field, Eighth Doctor since he was "presumed dead" after they tried to operate on him and Seven wanted to regenerate but died from anaesthetic after giving the scream which was the reason why Eight was amnesiac and took a long while to regenerate. You could say Fourteen didn't regenerate with thirteens clothes on either.
So many episodes were lost.

I loved the pattern for years of the doctor getting physically younger and younger with each regeneration, even though it was always unsustainable.
3rd has always been polite in his mannerisms, which is why he makes a good Doctor in this sense. He's polite and gentlemanly - But that's The Doctor anyway! lol
I love how 12 took an entire episode to regain himself as opposed to the others who just kind of woke up and were fine.

I'm not sure if this is confirmed, but I like to think it's because 12 is the first of the new regeneration cycle the Time Lords gave him. As the Daleks said, there are rules, and while the Doctor breaks them, there are consequences, like his mind not being set up for another regeneration.

I liked the contrast between 12, which made sense with him moving on, and even keeping with my thing about the new cycle, I liked the dynamic of 13 being female with how it played with the typical interactions with people, particularly companions. Sad that Chibnall did what he did.

ngl i feel so bad for jodie whittaker's run. i think she wouldve been a great doctor if the writing wasn't as bad as it was for her run. i like how she was always energetic and optimistic like the excited kid in a toy store, but still with a bit of grounded realism and maturity from the 12th doctor. its a shame her run was as badly written as it was, as the dumbasses in the "the doctors a MAN! he shouldn't be a GIRL! HE'S not a CHICK!" crowd will always point to the writing and directing and blame it on the fact that jodie whittaker was the doctor and not on the fact that chris chibnall ran the show like that "edgy" kid you knew in high school that protested everything while not understanding what the protests were about in the first place.
