If you think about it, Quincy has always scolded Monica for not acting like a pick-me. Even though her strength and independence is part of what makes him love her, he will always denigrate her for it out of habit; Nitpicking any indiscretion she makes that's a little short-sighted or selfish, like he's looking for something to be mad about. So when he says, "you still haven't changed". It's on par for how Quincy would respond, but in reality he knows he loves it and is already quietly falling for her all over again even before their little 1-on-1 love match🥰

Naw, she didnt "steal" Quincy.... they were best friends with unresolved issues. That last scene was them putting it back together or choosing to walk away FOR GOOD.
Monica didn’t steal Quincy, he wasn’t married however, an innocent woman got hurt and probably traumatized in the crossfire. It’s better to break her heart before they got married rather than afterwards though.

I just find it ridiculous that Monica's mom is looking down on Quincy's fiancee being a stewardess yet she's a stay at home mom and wife. Yeah it's thankless and non paying but at least his fiancee was getting compensated for what she does. Dream Big.
Her response was a class issue. Also it dehumanizes Tyra's character by not calling her by her actual name, and inst ad referring to her service-oriented job.

Seriously though, if someone can get "stolen" from a relationship, they didn't really want to be in the relationship in the first place. I don't want a man that's taken, and if my man got "stolen" from me, he was never really mine in the first place.

OK I agree that quincy was checked out his relationship with tyra simply by playing the basketball game for his heart. But...what if he would have re-injured his knee? Would Monica been like "oh, you hurt now? What about my pain? Get yo punk ass up!" Lol. Monica was being super selfish in her quest to prove a point (granted, she was right but this was too much of a risk). I do agree with her statement of better late than never, but as soon as he basically said girl my wedding is tomorrow, she needed to let that go then.

My Mom said it"s all fair in love ,unless the person is married. I partially agree,b/c a lot of drama pops off messing w a person's fiance,etc.This movie painted the ideal ending for Monica breaking up Quincy's engagement..we all know irl,it can and will get messy.

They were both too weak to declare their feelings for each other when she got back from Europe. Quincy wanted her to put aside her dreams and support him during college, and her stupid self apologizes for it. He was horrible to her and expected her to take it. God has to humble him by tearing up his ACL for him to value her. Now he's her cheerleader 😂
Did she sincerely apologize though, or was that part of her tactic to win him back? Just because a character says something doesn't make it true.

Monica did NOT steal Kyra's man. Quincy just ran out of defensive arsenal against the woman he knew was meant for him since childhood.
His ego, popularity, slow moving maturity was the smog that delayed their inevitable marriage for many years. Until he stepped out of the shadow of maneuvering through life as his dad did, he wasn't able to really be present and receptive to Monica.
When he finally SAW her with more than his eyes, true romance finally came. It just so happened him being engaged was a part of that backdrop.
Him coming to terms with the image of his father really helped him to get unstuck... That and his career-ending injury.

They were always for each other. She did not steal him - he was hers..ALWAYS (& vice versa). You sometimes have to part to get it right. They both grew individually in their separation but the love stood the test of time.

I can understand how younger people might deem the relationship as toxic. As a 42 year old man I also know that what caused a couple to break up as teenagers/young adults may in the moment seem egregious but over time turn out to be petty and miniscule in the grand scheme of it all. After time passes and forgiveness sets in so long as those EMOTIONS are still in tact they realistically could have made those relationships work. It's all about growth and maturity. HAPPY ENDINGS feel great. "Quincy supported Monica and they raised their daughter and never faced adversity again....." thats cool but I like the REAL. Ex: THE BEST MAN FINAL CHAPTERS were excellent and added a lot of depth to the story of each character. I loved it.....

Tashi's odd relationship with her and Arts child. the possibility that their child might be Patrick's. Also explain what the ending could mean. The scream " lets go!" She always does throughout the film. Or anything else you guys can think of

I agree with Heit. Despite the infidelity aspect, this is a great romantic story which makes it a great movie. To be honest, he wasn’t married yet so it was the best time to express herself. It would have been too late AFTER the wedding. I feel this way about The Bridges of Madison County too. They were dead wrong for cheating but the love story was beautiful.

For people who have the viewpoint that there’s no such thing as boyfriend and girlfriend your either single or your married I can see why they would say Monica didn’t steal Quincy from Kyra. For those don’t hold that view and do see a dating as some form of committed relationship I would say yes. I’m going to go with the latter. Quincy was in a committed relationship with Kyra on his way to be married, and he would have went along with that had Monica not come and challenged him to a game for his heart.
About 2 months ago you all had asked if Hollywood was to do a remake of Love and Basketball would we be mad. I had said no because I felt Love and Basketball was a terrible love story. I did acknowledge it was a classic but not a very good love story. Someone replied to my comment saying, “The movie is more than a love story, it's about Monica and Q finding themselves and being challenged with turmoil of what they love vs what else they can do as they got older” which I now understand to be true. However, if this was the point of the story I still think there were several mishaps.
Although I no longer feel this film is as bad as I remembered it to me. I still think people are generally valid with their disappointment with the ending. Heit had mentioned that he doesn’t judge a film based on whether or not he agrees with a characters actions but more so if it makes sense or is in line with the story. Well, In my opinion it was quite out of character for Monica to be so completely selfish like that. Some may bring up the fact about Monica sleeping with him after Prom even though he went with someone else. However, I dont even think those situations are remotely comparable. Quincy and that girl were not dating and Quincy before doing the do with Monica had told her that he took her home and she called him the dumbest nigga in the world. Thus showing to Monica there was nothing going on between him and that girl. If anything it was Quincy who had the “I need to get what I want” mentality throughout the film. So if anything it should have been him to challenge her to the love and basketball game.
When I replied to the commenter on RUclips agreeing with their assertion I just felt that there were better ways of showing that they said, “the breakup for one, having Q be the one playing for Monica this time without a fiancé, therefore he comes full circle on him making the first move like he did when they were kids, this time he'd lose but he still says double or nothing cuz of the lack of ego...same song and everything, Monica's reason would be for curiosity of wondering if he's really changed, the game would be pretty even until Q realizes the game isn't what he wants to win...it's Monica”. I agree with this because although I feel that the “stay with me” scene sacrificed a lot of Quincy’s character since it is ultimately in the film it would make more sense for him to be the one to challenge Monica for her heart.
Also I think that you made a fool of me, scene somewhat contradicts the stories ending. As we saw the film ends with Monica being a successful WNBA player and a mother. Showing that she can have the best of both worlds. However, her telling Quincy she should have stayed with him, and she should have loved him completely contradicts this. As in the scene where Quincy is asking Monica to stay with him he’s essentially asking her to choose him over her basketball career. So for her to say yeah I should have chose you but then have her get the empowering ending of not having to give up her career seems contradictory.
Lastly, I agree with Heit on the films treatment of Kyra. Throughout the film when we see Kyra she seems to be a sweet girl. There is nothing that is presented to us that would otherwise make us feel as though he’s in unhappy situation. She’s not a gold digger, she’s seems concerned for him when he injures himself. This is another blunder in my opinion. As take The Best Man (1999) because the film showed us that Julian was quite unhappy and that Shelby was quite obnoxious and rude throughout the film. We the audience don’t feel sorry for her when he leaves her for Candy. The few times that we saw Kyra in the film it should have been to make the audience not like her.
Now don’t let my criticism of this film convince you that I hate this film. It was a great pleasure watching you all discuss a film that was on constant replay in my household and almost every other Black American household in the 2000’s. However, if I were to describe Love and Basketball after this series I would as a noble attempt.
Lastly,
I think you all did really great with this series on examining if this was a toxic or healthy love or not. You may want to consider making this a a playlist where you both go through iconic black love stories from the 90’s or 00’s examining if the love depicted in the film was a healthy love or not. I think Poetic Justice, Brown Sugar, Love Jones, The Brothers , etc. The reason I say this is because I saw someone on Instagram and Twitter say that Love Jones was a toxic love story. I completely rolled my eyes but, just like with Love and Basketball I could just be going too much on what I remember.

You can Dream and Achieve. The Child aspect is not considering the challenges or even having a bandwidth of challenges that you havent experienced yet. Some things are unrealistic.. But alot of things juss seem unrealistic because our WILL may not Match all that the Journey to fulfillment requires.

Hate to say this, she ain't take Q from that girl, they were destined to be together. People hate on Alicia Keys, but I think that was a little predestined too. I think Monica waited so late to say something because she wanted the movie to be better. (Honestly, they both modeled after their parent's and displaying their "faults" in love behavior. ) Quincy was mad, in that moment, because he was hoping she would have said something earlier. I think he didn't want to hurt his fiancé but knew he would choose Monica if ever given a choice, over anyone. He beat her the first time because he was mad; I agree, he said yes when he started to play. Quincy mama don't care bout that girl, she KNOW Monica, Monica can STILL play and she wants GUCCI. She dreaming BIG! JK, i think both IN laws were very happy their children chose and fought for each other.
nobody could ever make me hate this movie, the toxic/pick me allegations hold no water, and it’s ultimately a very thoughtful realistic (for the most part) love story, there’s a reason why I have 3 versions of it and it’s one of my favorite movies of all time
