Just a note : April did work at the club, the pastor asked. Also, Sandino was only getting paid to do repairs at the church. He was only fixing things at April’s house as exchange for a place to stay.
The topic on whether April's mother believed that April was violated reminded me of a video I saw a few years ago. It was of this woman with her son at church and she was speaking her piece. She then reveals that her mother's boyfriend did the same to her as a child. The mother stands up and accuses her daughter of lying and it turns into a whole debacle. The church members then try to get the mic away from her and it ends there. I think of some of these grown women that will keep a man that's not a decent person or outright terrible. They end up ruining relationships with the people around them and isolating themselves just to keep their toxic man.
This is all great commentary. Unfortunately, I see the worst of these family traumas play out daily in the emergency department. And one thing that I can say is that you were spot on with your breakdown of the intricate dynamicsis that complicate familial traumas. As you all pointed out one of the most difficult Problems in our society is how we evaluate and get help for people who have obviously been traumatized in their youth but now as adults, can often times complicate/worsen traumas for the youth around them who owe them no understanding. This was heavy.
April's house was left to her and her dead sister by her father. She told Pastor Brian that she left it the same way her father left it. I would have liked to know more about her father. Where was he when she was getting raped by her mother's boyfriend? If April was raped, most likely her sister was too which would explain why her sister went down the path that she did. There are mothers that would believe a man over their own children. The song that Gladys Knight sang in the movie is called "The Need to Be". It's actually a cover by Jim Weatherly that she did with the Pips in 1974. April was a nightclub singer. Nightclub singers get pay but not much.
And I would highly assume the same thing happened to their mom/his sister, and thats probably why she got hooked on drugs. SMH. I wish he would've added that to this story to give more background on their mom. It's hard for me to believe she just got hooked on drugs just because.
Precious does have comic relief tho, in the classroom, the Spanish scene, the imaginations precious has, a lot in the hospital. Like there’s comic relief here and there, maybe it’s not enough for some people, but I think it’s very balanced, to where we still take the movie very seriously

@ 55:46, I’m still rather young, mid 20s, so I don’t think maturely I’m there yet, but I’m looking forward to eventually reaching the point where I’m okay with letting people believe whatever they want to believe too.
It took me a long time to get here. I didn't start thinking about being okay with letting people think whatever until I was in my 30s, and it took me until I was well into my 40s to truly not give a care across the board. I had a number of tragedies and losses that got me there sooner than I otherwise would have arrived at this point.
Lol. So i gotta point it out that its not a Darkskinned vs Lightskinned Battle in This TyTy movie for once.. 😄. That Being Said , what yall think about Him making thee 'Good' Lightskinned man a Latino & the Antagonistic one 'just' a Lightskinned African American.. note: thats only standing out to me because of a Trend TyTy has.. Amongst that tho, i can appreciate him showing that African Americans arent the only ones with Struggle.. but that also makes me think about how Some ppl feel like, Black ppl are the only Race who over-identify with their struggle & constantly use it as an excuse to not do or be better.. Do you think TyTy could be saying that in a Way.. 🤔🤔🤔.. Personally i think he is saying that to an extent, but not in an ALL black ppl type of way.. Cuz i also appreciate the presence of African American Characters that speak against that mentality, while not dismissing the validity & existence of the past struggles, thee residuals of them & the Present feelings and experiences.. as to say Be Honest About Your Trauma, Anger & Sadness, but dont make yourself a prisoner to it & dont make errbody else your punching bag.
In terms of the complexions, I wonder if this is something that he consciously does or whether there is just this ingrained bias. It's possible that he could be saying some people use race and struggle as an excuse, but I see it differently when he speaking to a Black audience versus an audience that includes more than people of color. I suppose I infer the intentions differently depending on the audience.
My perspective of Aprils triggered filled accusation of Sandino.. is.. a trauma response to abuse is often jumping out of the frying pan & into a fire type shihh.. for example you see certain ppl rship hop, and often never single.. Alot of times its because they are running from the remains & memories of some form of abuse.. and they end up attracting the same person in different bodies cuz they havent dealt with the actual issue.. they're savior seeking without having truly saved themselves, and are constantly finding themselves in the same position over and over.. So April was likely having that realization.. R*pey Randy was likely a 'savior" to her at one point.. and thats how he got her blinded to his red flags.. So Sandino coming in as a 'savior'.. with that specific situation having happened.. She's then trynna get ahead of it while also being in 'fight' mode .. so her asking him if he's also a pedo, is both to try to find peace in her appreciation of him AND to provoke him to see if what potential demons will come out .. she was depending on his response to help her make the decision on if shes right or wrong to show him appreciation, as well her needing a Man to attack.
Honestly Though I feel like part of it is her mom's fault to why April was being careless and mad at the time because she didn't believe that she was being sexual abuse by her boyfriend and believed him instead of protecting her and getting her some help too. Now don't get me wrong April shouldn't have been taking out her anger towards everyone that loves her and cares about her too but that Truma could really change your whole life and you become a different person too.
@@HeitCheri Yep, that's him. I think in a behind the scenes featurette for this film he said it was important for him to do this movie because he has three sisters who he's really protective over.
April was abused by the mother's boyfriend Lee and left the home. Maybe the younger sister turned to drugs because Lee touched her too and she couldn't leave. The oldest child could be the mother's boyfriend.
I was thinking of the same thing because why did April's Sister turn to drugs and became a neglectful parent to her children because I'm sure He touched her too and that's why she turned to drugs. It seems like April's mother failed both of her daughters.
50 first dates... Now that's an unusual one, but I see a connection between that one and the notebook. I like all of those movies. My favs change, but right now they might be... Not in any particular order: Queen & Slim Penelope & Colin on Bridgerton Sheila & Sheriff Troy WDIGM1
this is just a trauma dump movie 😭, One thing about Tyler Perry we’ll always get black women crying in distress due to trauma and traumatized displaced children with a terrible parent or some dead family member and then the power of song and religion saves the day
Sometimes movies are what you make them I think. This film could make you consider the ideas presented... Or it could make you dismiss the ideas in favor of suggesting that it is a trauma dump. Whether or not it is a trauma dump, I think there's the opportunity to discuss pressing issues within the community. That is something we try to do, in spite of any shortcomings in the plot or production.
I wish they would have taken all of the Madea subplot out of this movie and just kept it more serious. I really enjoy the scenes with taraji's character, The children, etc The Madea aspect Just lessons the movie in my opinion. I still like Madea movies but I feel like it wasn't needed for this film
R-Word Randy 7:10 No, at least not the church I have been to. Usually they ask the person “hey such and such needs a play to stay would you be willing to let them stay at your house for a little while”. And often times it is usually other church members. So it’s people you know and probably have known for years. Not some random person they have never met before. This has been on my mind for a while now. I was raised on Tyler Perry plays and movies. Anyone who was around during the early 2000’s remembers how hard those stage plays hit the black community. At one point every black household had a Tyler Perry DVD. So when I got older I was quite shocked that a lot of people didn’t like Tyler Perry and felt his films made us look bad. Now as an adult, I think most criticisms of Tyler Perry are quite valid. But it made me think Why did we embrace him so hard if all he did was make us look bad? And it hit me, while I still feel that his were made for the Black Church. I feel that his films were made to attract white audiences. As if you didn’t know this movie is based of a stage Play that he wrote. The plot of the play basically goes. Madea has recently fallen ill and so the family has come to visit her. However, there is three people already living with Madea. One is Vianne who finalized her divorce from Husband Anthony three days ago. Bobby who is an ex-con trying to rebuild his life. And Keisha a teenager who has been living with Madea for six months after Madea’s niece Maylee dropped her off there with a promise she will be back. She does give Madea $75 a week for taking care of Keisha. Now one thing to note is that both Bobby and Anthony are both dark skin in the play. IMaylee comes to the house and it is revealed she is engaged to be married to Anthony. Her sisters ex husband. During the play Bobby ends up getting a really good job and thus can now leave Madea’s house. Keisha ends up getting. It’s also revealed that Maylee’s and Vianna’s parents were addicts. With Maylee’s mother once forcing her to have sex with a drug dealer at the age of 13 in exchange for drug credit. And that’s how she ended up having Keisha. And Keisha actually resembles the man who raped her. After Anthony tells Maylee her daughter is not welcome to live with him. She breaks off the engagement and she apologizes to her sister for her wrong dead. Vianne and Bobby get together at the end of the play and it ends with a the cast singing as song about women who are going through divorce, black men who are trying to rebuild there life after being in the prison system, and single mothers who are trying their best to keep strong and push forward. There’s a lot I left out but that’s pretty much the plot. I bring this all up because Tyler Perry wrote, directed, and produced the play. And he wrote directed, and produced the film version. But in the play there was no woman working at a bar, no woman sleeping with a married man with a child on the way, the three kids weren’t in the play, and the was no black man that tried to r-word the niece in the play. The immigrant wasnt in the play either. Also there was a darkskin black man who was not the villain and actually ended the story happy. As he got a great new job and the girl he had a crush on. Now I’m not going to say the play didn’t have any stereotypes but the film seemed to go out of its way to add stereotypes. There’s also a lot less gospel music in the film as well. But what do yall think? Do you think Tyler Perry made his films with intention of garnering a white audience and so to do that he added more stereotypes to the film version? And have yall seen the play version of I can do bad all by myself? Overall, Tyler Perry movies tend to be a lot darker than his plays. Also one thing I have noticed this Tyler Perry is that he has a tendency of revealing character details that would completely change the way you see the character in dialogue and then never revisits said thing again. In this movie it would be April revealing she was touched by her mother’s boyfriend and then we never hear about it again. And in the play version Anthony reveals that Vianne was sleeping with his best friend and then we never hear about that again.
That was pretty stupid of April to almost kill randy instead of letting the cops handle the situation. Because if she did she wouldn't see her family again as a free woman. And not to mention that the kids would be in foster care.

Not r word randy 💀
#RWORDRANDY lol
That was pretty stupid of April to almost kill randy instead of letting the cops handle the situation. Because if she did she wouldn't see her family again as a free woman. And not to mention that the kids would be in foster care.
I hear you, but I think April wasn't thinking at all. She was completely triggered into thinking about her own childhood abuse.
April did what she wanted her mother to do to Lee.
She was going to destroy him. It's really amazing that he didn't get shocked worse because she did throw that radio!
This movie is crazy....I haven't seen it but kind of want to watch...just a little🤏🏿
