Melinda should’ve left him a long time ago. I don't think either were narcs. Narc gets thrown around too easily now. He was selfish, and she had anger issues that needed to be addressed early on. They were the perfect, codependent storm. Their relationship should've ended during college. They both held on. Taraji's character put up with way too much and gave him no incentive to change. The guy also did what many male clowns do: date and settle for who they do not like because they cannot get who they really want. He had a lucky break and was able to encounter who he always wanted. Nothing Taraji's character could've done would make him do right. He didn't like her and made her pay for it annually by being a bum. Taraji saw him perform for the woman he really wanted and snapped. She became a woman scorned, which, unfortunately, cost her her life. No narcs here. Just an entitled clown who got a lucky break and the woman he always wanted and a woman who had no self esteem to walk away from the familiar and it caused her demise. It's frightening how men will "settle down" with and marry women they don't even like, which is why I trust NONE of them until they prove otherwise.
@HeitCheri Honestly it does because when I watched this movie when it first came out, I called dude a whole narc! He def has tendencies but when I got older and rewatched, I saw mistakes of both ends. Acrimony was the perfect title for this movie, especially when you've felt it before. I slick think Ole Boy had some sort of 'mental challenge ' as well.. He was very awkward, socially inept and clearly very smart . Like he may have been on thee autistic spectrum or somn'.
The boat scene makes sense when you think about the crashing the trailer scene and the extreme consequence (her death) was similar to her losing her ability to have children as a consequence for her actions when she found out he was with another girl. I think he was unintentionally bad for her but she was already off her rocker. His actions exacerbated her already fragile condition. But her family's inability to see the need to get her help beforehand means her mental illness went unchecked and she ended up dying as a result. Earlier diagnosis would have prevented all of this. But the family just treated her like that's just #HowSheIs I guess... great breakdown as usual!
I empathize with Melinda in that she was the one who worked for her ex-husband's dream to come into fruition. It could (and maybe should) be perceived that she put in the 80% and in the end, everyone came out on top except Melinda. Yes, Robert "gave her" 10 million, but he more likely wrote that check, because she could have gone to court and proved she deserved at least half of the money. Did Robert love Melinda? He loved that she loved him. But that goes with "how she is"
Um you are. Her character is straight up unhinged. She's a classic textbook narcissist, who couldnt accept the fact he moved on, after SHE filed for divorce, and claimed to have moved on.
I don’t blame Malinda for leaving him but how she acted after his battery hit was just insane. At least Robert reimburse her financially to show that he actually loved her but he should’ve known “how she is” and gotten some top tier security.😂
They both were wrong... Robert: Watched her struggle for YEARS and never tried to help her because all he cared about was HIS dream. As we saw later on, it had nothing to do with dreaming of a happy life w/ her because he easily slid another woman into the vacant spot. He was selfish and imo didn't truly love her. Melinda: Should have left him a LONG time ago. Also, should have left him alone after getting $10M and her mother's house. I understand why she felt it wasn't enough because she destroyed her ability to have kids and wasted her best years on him, but those were her decisions. I do think she deserved half though for paying for his education and financing the battery. Obviously, all the stalking and violence were wrong. His 2nd wife was smart. She got with him after realizing he had accomplished his goal and just needed help she could EASILY give. She ate the fruits of Melinda's labor.
I understand Melinda's rage. It was justified. But she took it too far. When he paid her back for everything and bought back her mother's house, that should've been the end of it. She's the one who filed for divorce! P.S. Have y'all reviewed Temptation?
My stance remains the same. They should've broke up after he cheated the first time. She would've not cared that much when He became rich because she would've been moved on. This is why it is much better to leave a toxic situation as fast as you can to prevent years of trauma and the further building of a toxic connection that you'll end up getting used to. But it is a movie all in all😅.
I think Melinda would have stayed even after thinking he cheated. She wouldn't even known, if it wasn't for her sisters. Her sisters were of no help to her mentality
@@TheRetroWoman80 it's weird because the movie is totally Tyler perry over the top, but I love how Mel and Rob are written to not be hero or villain. Unpopular opinion: they were both right and wrong. They were both narcissists, BUT I also think this isn't anything strange outside of how a lot of people act... generally. Melinda beating Robert outright was extreme, Robert using her money was also extreme, but how people view a situation from their perspective (and how they act accordingly to said perception) is a very human thing. And how everything unfolded clearly showed how Mel and Rob were incredibly flawed people.
I agree. But he was definitely a covert narcissist. I think she had highly aggressive narcissistic traits due to his abuse. They say that narcissistic abuse often leads to some sort of emotional brain damage.
@@minigolfandothergames7096 to me this is kind of a chicken or the egg thing because mel did start the abuse (literally day one of running into each other), but Rob didn't help with his later shady behavior, which in turn caused Mel to become increasingly resentful and psychotic, even after he tried to make amends... but continued being shady. Which caused her to snap. So it was just a vicious cycle.
@@lorenzoyoung698 not telling Mel he was engaged, after telling her he'd always love her and giving her roses, is a shady act. Though I will admit, he might not meant for it to be intentionally shady.
The sisters were jealous of the fact that Melinda got the inheritance and had they stayed out her biz I feel it woulda ended differently as well but I feel Robert definitely had an agenda but once he paid me the money back he never woulda saw me again. Not sure if anyone was a narcissist but I feel they both had personality Disorders
I don’t think Robert was necessarily a con artist, bc that implies he knew Melinda was an easy lick, he was however, essentially a bum living off his gfs dime until he accomplished his goals, the whole plot of the movie hinges on this man getting this battery to work and getting people to invest in it, so while, yes, it’s incredibly selfish and manipulative that he used the resources of her family for years and subsequently put Melinda in so much distress for his own desires, I wouldn’t necessarily call that narcissism, but he was a determined loser with an end goal and he got it, you can be an opportunist without malicious intent, unfortunately most of the time that just comes with the detriment to other people, and the crazy thing is it didn’t have to be Melinda, she was just the only one dumb enough to give him the time of day, at the VERY least you can call him a leech, unfortunately for Robert he leeched off someone that was effing crazy 😭

I felt sorry for her and i felt sorry for him, i hated the sisters, side eyed the 2nd wife because she slid up on a good thang without the heart ache, I'm just ... IDK😵😵
I hated the sisters too because they never helped the situation! And when their husbands would try to speak up, they'd get shut down quick if they didn't agree with the sisters (though one sister was way worse than the other lol).
40:04 when I was writing my books, I thought my book was going to be published instantly and I wouldn't need to work in a office job because I knew my stories was good. It's not that I had no intention of working I just had that high confidence and determination for my books. Even when my teachers at the time told me, don't put all your eggs in on basket, I thought that since it was writing and nothing extreme, like inventing the latest technology or curing cancer, it was fine. But all artist and writers say the same thing: "Don't quit your day job." I still poured what I love in my writing, but keeping an income is still needed. Although, I still felt I was right when guidance councilors, and family members told me to presue a different career venture when the original one, it was culinary arts, didn't get me work even after getting the degree.
They both were narcissistic. In the being, it was the husband, but in the end, it was the wife. He did low-key take advantage of her, but he did change his ways. But the real problem was the sisters in her ear. If she had hanged on a little bit longer, she would still have her husband.
Idc $10 million isn’t enough when you remember he has $65 million left to spend on himself, a child and another woman. She gave him EVERYTHING and he couldn’t give her even half?? I absolutely understand what drove her crazy. He sold her his dream of living in a pent house, the boat, etc that im sure she held onto as motivation when she was getting up to work two jobs. She bet on those dreams. And for him to go live out those dreams with another woman???? Not just any woman, but the woman who he cheated on her with prior. He didn’t even have the decency to give the other woman another dream. To see her have a child when she played a part in Melinda not having her own child. And I can’t imagine how it must of felt to Melinda that she worked two jobs, took out a mortgage on her mom’s house, jeopardized her sisters’ business, depleted her own inheritance for that to still not be enough to get him off the ground. But the new woman comes at least minute, and within 10 minutes changes his life, becomes the Shero. Something Melinda herself couldn’t do. Uh uh. Now I am not saying that she was right, but chile I understand! He doesn’t get to win both in the movie and in commentary 😭
The part about the car in college is very true. My guy friend had a car and my homegirls and I would ask him “aren’t you hungry?, don’t you want to get something to eat?”😭
They were both a bad match from the beginning. After she caught him cheating when they were in college she should have left him alone and got some help.
With Tyler movies usually the person with the worst wigs is to be blamed 😂 in this movie I will say she played herself by staying with someone who cheated after she was trying to show him she cared about him by buying him the car. She definitely needed mental care but they were both wrong.
He only cheated on her when they was kids, he didn't cheat on her when they was married it's just the illusion that the movie made you think because he said he never cheated on her while they was married
6:31 when it comes to money especially inheritance in real life they always say never tell anyone about your money because they are not in it for love. Only what you can provide materialistically.
HOW IS SHE!!!! Both Melinda & Robert both had narcissistic traits. Robert tried to right his wrongs after his invention hit big & it wasn’t enough for Melinda. Melinda didn’t set any boundaries with her sisters. It was like Robert was married to them as well. Melinda would have stayed with Robert if her sisters weren’t involved in her & Robert’s marriage. Melinda not thinking herself probably was always apart of her personality since childhood. Here are some fun facts: Taraji P. Henson & Lyriq Bent who played Robert were also in Four Brothers & Aijona Alexus who played young Melinda also played young Cookie on Empire & she was also on BMF.
I lobe how you guys broke this down in 2018 I was in a longterm relationship and didn't understand why I liked this movie so much. But I had gotten my cosmetology license two years before and trying to support a rapper and everything was always wrong money always tight and when we broke up I always felt like he'd make it and say f me while that hasn't happened yet I just understand my liking for the movie way more. Now idk if I'm a narc or just a supportive person who feels like they lost but this breakdown just helped me understand that relationship so much more. I watched acrimony probably 6 times when it came out I just felt Melinda lol
Am I the only one who always thought the "younger Taraji" character looked more like the woman the ex husband ended up with vs. a transformation into "actual Taraji?" 😂 They actually look like real sisters! I always thought the casting was off and Taraji & the "New Chick" should've switched roles! Buuuut, we know TP was looking out for his girl Taraji and this is her movie!
Rather than trying to analyze to make sense of this, I decided to conclude that TP is not able to relate to the way “regular people” behave and it is written from an out of touch POV
that's EXACTLY how I felt. You can write drama without exaggerating the character's personalities and actions SO MUCH. It's kinda wack of Tyler to keep churning out these movies based off stereotypes and annoying tropes
How is she Both had issues But for me I literally hated Robert this whole movie cause he was so frustrating You could've made this easier by easing Melinda's financial concerns while working that stupid ass battery. Melinda should've broken up with him the first he cheated because she lost trust and couldn't get it back. Melinda is very disturbed, but she's at fault because everything was her choice personally Him promising all these things was also fucked up. And he knew she wasnt right in the head either. Pating the money bsck is one thing, but he robbed her of time and emotions. Two things she can't back or move past She has never learned to move past or manage her anger. In most of her interactions, she is angry. That's healthy. And her trying to get back with him wasn't good, but again, it's on him for promising stuff. While I'm on Melinda's side, they both ain't shit but screw Robert

How she is! I feel like Rob really did like melinda in the beginning however his manipulation started at the mothers repass. I think he saw the dynamic between her and her sister's and found a way to somehow use it to his advantage. He seems like a man that uses his charms and looks to get with women who are better off then him and uses them as a come up. The lady he cheated with and ended up getting pregnant and marrying seemed like she was in a better position then he was as a colleges student and in adult hood as well. Also i think that the only reason Melinda and rob divorced was because of her sisters. I think if it wasn’t for the sisters Melinda probably would have got mad and went crazy but ended up taking him back again 😂
How she is! Just to piggyback off of my last post. There's a man who works at my job who acts like Rob with asking for things with out actually asking. He only has female friends and they're usually attractive one. He goes and gives them sob stories about his life and says that he's so tired because he works 16hours six days a week. He's a Mexican immigrant and says he hasn't seen his child in almost a year and wishes he could see her blah blah blah. Before you know it the nurses are giving him money to go visit his daughter. Allowing him to sleep on the job and protect him from managers. One time he lost his air pods and gave sob stories about that and the next thing you know they bought him new apple air pods and an apple watch to go with his phone. He even tried to get me to feeling sorry for him working long hours. It worked for a little while. I would play look out for him while he left me working alone for hours while he went to a different area and slept. If managers came looking id text his cell and tell him to come down. Then I thought about it. He complain a lot but no one is making him work these hours he does it himself then complain about it. When I noticed he walks past men and only holds conversations with women, I knew something wasn't right. I ended our friendship immediately. He notice he does it because men wouldn't gave a damn about him being tired but women have different emotions
@HeitCheri HOW SHE IS! Mel really loved him and did her best to support him. She gave her all and even lost the house!! I think you're right about the mental health piece because Mel wasn't able to control her emotions and had MPD. I think you're a little tough on Robert because he was so driven, and a mad scientist, he didn't realize he was hurting Mel by not working part time at least to help her out!! He really loved her!! But was mad crazy driven over getting that battery in the game!! If he was a con.. it was non intentional to hurt because it was for the greater good for he and Mel!! Remember!! He asked Mel repeatedly if she was sure and wanted the divorce!! He didn't want it!! Her damn meddling sisters that pressured her to get a divorce especially Pam the eldest!! So by Robert marrying the same Chick that Mel lost her insides over and giving her all the things he and Mel were supposed to have it sent Mel over the edge😮What he should've done was leave town and not post anything on social media and have his life where Mel couldn't know or see because I would snap too that's a triple slap in my face Robert wasn't thinking on that part!!🤔🤔There's a whole lot of layers to this movie!! Okay so here's the thing- Melinda and her sisters didn't know what they didn't know. Objectively, it looked BAD, and after how long and hard he had let her down she had no reason to trust him so I totally get why she left. I can kind of understand. seeing someone else live the life he promised her probably hurt a lot. it makes you feel worthless, like nothing you ever did or said mattered. combine that with her anger issues, and you get disaster. violence is never the answer, though.
@53 min it is admirable to have a dream and work hard but at some point if it's not bringing income that becomes a hobby. You should get a 9:00-5:00 and work on that dream nights and weekends - I'm just saying
That exactly what we were talking about. The difficulty of having to essentially work on your paying job and your business at the same time. It's hard work, but you've gotta do it like this until the business can pay the bills.
51:06 my thought process during all of this is, is there not another company that he could’ve went to pitch the battery to?! I don’t blame Malinda for leaving him but how she acted after his battery hit was just insane. At least Robert reimburse her financially to show that he actually loved her but he should’ve known “how she is” and gotten some top tier security.😂
Facts
I concur.
So what you're saying is that it's his fault for how she reacted?
@@Rich_Reese no what I said was I don’t blame her for being upset at him, he was doing some things but she didn’t need to go overboard like that.
I feel like he should pay her half.
After receiving the 75 million he could've repaired the failed marriage. He chose to move on with the other woman instead of reconciling.
But Melinda said that they were not getting back together.
I understand Melinda's rage. It was justified. But she took it too far. When he paid her back for everything and bought back her mother's house, that should've been the end of it. She's the one who filed for divorce! P.S. Have y'all reviewed Temptation?
Hey Sherry! She did take it too far and I think her mental illness had a lot to do with this. We haven't reviewed Temptation yet! 😊
@@HeitCheriyet? 👀
You can be alone, but not lonely or you can be surrounded by people yet still be alone.
💯 exactly
I think Melinda would have stayed even after thinking he cheated. She wouldn't even known, if it wasn't for her sisters. Her sisters were of no help to her mentality
ROBERT HAD HIS FAULTS TOO BUT HE MADE UP FOR IT BY GETTING HER HOUSE BACK PLUS SHE ALSO GOT MONEY. HE PAID HER BACK THEN MOVED ON
Yes exactly. He wasn't the best guy, but he certainly wasn't a straight villain either.
Exactly. She just wasn't right within to let it end there.
@@cabbitness1983how was he shady?

I would have left when I caught him in college. This movie makes me angry every time I watch it.
What i hate about him everything that they planned and talked about, naming the boat he gave to the person he cheated on her with
It occurs to me that those were HIS dreams and he could and would insert any woman to be there while he pursued his desires.
Naw that was HIS dream from the get go before he even met her, remember when they was young and they took that walk and he was pointing out that penthouse he already had plans to live there he was just sharing it with her and willing to bring her in on his dream and make it OUR dream but it was HIS dream from the get go so he was gonna live that life regardless of what woman was in his life

Girl, everything you just said!!! 😅
But all artist and writers say the same thing: "Don't quit your day job."
I still poured what I love in my writing, but keeping an income is still needed.

The Tyler Perry rundowns are the best
I just notice that girl played young Taraji P Henson in this and empire
She was also in the Lifetime movie Real Love. I wish they would stream that bc it was really good.
I haven't gotten the chance the full episode. But this movie was just frustrating and a mess. Lol
How is she

But for me I literally hated Robert this whole movie cause he was so frustrating
You could've made this easier by easing Melinda's financial concerns while working that stupid ass battery.
Melinda should've broken up with him the first he cheated because she lost trust and couldn't get it back.
Melinda is very disturbed, but she's at fault because everything was her choice personally
Him promising all these things was also fucked up. And he knew she wasnt right in the head either. Pating the money bsck is one thing, but he robbed her of time and emotions. Two things she can't back or move past
She has never learned to move past or manage her anger. In most of her interactions, she is angry. That's healthy. And her trying to get back with him wasn't good, but again, it's on him for promising stuff.
While I'm on Melinda's side, they both ain't shit but screw Robert

It would be interesting if you could do a video from Robert's perspective not Mel's🤔
