Plus i have been seeing more and more instances of Women divorcing cheating men & then becoming Side Chicks.. EVEN TO THE EX HUSBANDS THEY DIVORCED.. and its very interesting.. but i think thats what happens when you neglect your sense of self, self value & self love .. and like she said herself.. Lazy in some way.. & Society influences women , Black women esp to be so Energetic for others. But to be Lazy towards their own needs, goals, & desires(there are other words.. but its pretty raw that she used lazy.. cuz after you give all your energy away.. It makes sense for you to feel 'Lazy').. and again that goes back to Self Worth.. if you dont feel worthy.. You wont feel an urgency to pour into yourself or your own goals & such.. and being a side chick gives you a quick, & FALSE SENSE of Power & Value(esp if you are conditioned to seek validation purely/mostly from Men). And It brings to mind how necessary it is to be sure we feel value in ourself simply as We are.. & Not for who or what we are attached to.. cuz if/when you lose it/them.. The handshake at the end was to congratulate her, but also to offer her the hand of support he wouldn't give during the marriage - which was what she needed all along. Opening the gate for her was to say he accepted defeat, no hard feelings, but it was also to show that he was in a sense freeing her from her obligations to him and "allowing" her to do her. Recall he had been stifling her from following her passions. Overall, I think he felt humbled by losing, after all that he had been doing to "win" in their life together, even if it meant hurting her and the children with the control issues, the self-hate, the affair, and his leaving. As long as he was winning from his perspective of it, he was fine, but he was brought down by all the consequences of his choices. I'll bet the business will even go from declining to failing altogether since she isn't his backbone anymore, and I'll bet he knows it. As she left, he was still in the court afterward bc symbolically his battles weren't over. And let's see how long the new relationship lasts...

Yeah people add layers to cheating to make it feel better. No one would be saying that if it was a wife cheating on her sick husband. They only have rose colored glasses when it comes to stuff like this when women are the ones that need to get over it or take it. There aren’t millions of movies with men sitting around “waiting to exhale” from their high powered wives while they sitting at home being stay at home husbands.

  • @Rodrasroom

Also what James said in that letter is virtually impossible. He doesn’t love Bernie really. He doesn’t know her at all. He loves the idea of her in a way because he had an emotionally vulnerable and intimate moment and he had been starved of that. Also Bernie got what she needed in the divorce, and I think her ex did respect an aspect of her, because he had forgotten how much of a fighter Bernie was, she had been such an agreeable wife for him through the years, he forgot who he married. He saw a glimpse of the Bernie he loved in the beginning. She got this new haircut, she looks brand new to him. That’s why he was soft to her at the end. I don’t think he would have touched her hand, but I could see him opening the court door for her. Yall are doing a great job I can’t wait to see Savannah’s story!

Like he wasn’t planning to leave… how can you live everyday, routinely plotting on and smile in my face. How are you able to live with yourself - treating those you claim to care for like stepping stone.

What I got with Bernadine’s character is that she was going through the five stages of grief and the movie highlights key aspects of the grieving process for example, in the club scene I don’t think she was wanting to become a side chick, she was looking for male attention, the attention that she never experienced from John in the lead up to their breakup and divorce

i think a part of Bernadine’s anger is that she believes she made John into who he is today. all of what he’s got is because she’s sacrificed. and then she makes a very successful man and he leaves her so that a white woman can reap all the benefits. he owed her sm. she never got any of the things she wanted. n although she has a beautiful home n kids whom she loves dearly, those were all John’s desires. john was her prize in a sense. he is the physical embodiment of her hardest work, and he has the nerve to be who she made him to be, but with someone else

The emergency broadcast in my opinion was placed there as a warning that something wicked is coming and that’s when he told her he was leaving her for a white woman and after the argument was over so was the emergency broadcast message. It’s just like the movie “The Godfather! Whenever you see an orange 🍊 in a scene it meant that someone was going to be killed. There was death in the air. There were oranges 🍊 in the scene where Vito was shot at while shopping for oranges and at the end where Vito was eating oranges and he placed a half of orange in his mouth to scare his grandson while they played in his garden. I also feel like Angela and Kerri's move by doing these kind of signature performances is to endear themselves to the greater audience because I didn't really fall in love with any of Angela's characters I fell in love with her through her different roles and that leads to people being like I want THAT actress in this role! It does a disservice to their craft but in terms of getting hired I'm sure it's done wonders

Some times those specifics don't need to be shown on screen. It is funny though cause watching as a 14 year old it views as romantic (they're whole dynamic) as a 41 year old you're absolutely right. I get whats being said at the end too. John didn't end his marriage in a week after meeting the new girl. He probably did tell her that he loved his wife and that he was committed to his family as well. A big tactic of cheaters is to feign being torn and act like the dutiful spouse that just cant stay away from this one special person and that in turn makes the side person feel like "Oh, they are a good person. They just cant help what they feel for me."

I like how when he offered the $300,000 she says your kids aren’t for sale. She doesn’t believe she should have all the money, hell she didn’t even ask for the house but that’s the first thing he offered her (he’s been had his life established elsewhere) I also love when she sells his belongings. Yes it was petty but I think it also showed her character. She live around all these rich folks she could of sold everything for $100 and up. That car was easily over $10,000. It was never just about the money to her but YES she needs money to take care of the kids. Honestly this movie makes it appear like it was a hard case to beat but it wasn’t. She put her hopes and dreams aside to help him fulfill his she wasn’t only a housewife, she was his secretary (with no pay) so a judge would easily say you have been supporting her and the kids all this time it’s not fair to take it all away “the lifestyle” especially for the kids because of the divorce. To yank those kids out of a clearly nice neighborhood and private school to low class neighborhood and public school so instantly would traumatize the kids. The judge would have to grant him a period of time he has to care for them financially until she can get on her feet since she would be essentially starting from nothing. Just my two cents. I just rewatched the movie (haven’t watched since I was a kid) and I loved it. I see it from a whole different point of view as a adult.

Even though she hadn't been able to and had no indication that she would soon be able to begin working on her dreams she was willing to stay in that marriage and take it for what it was because she had him and they were living fine. If he hadn't left her and continued to ignore her dreams I doubt she wouldve left him

I don’t think it was cheating they didn’t do anything & his wife was dying & James could have been longing for someone to hold himself, shit all we know is his wife could have been in the hospital all this time. I think what she got was fair a house, the main house & $2M especially for 1995 wasn’t bad money plus she has a MBA so she can flip that money.

I thought Bernie was a hypocrite, because she was was angry that John cheated on and left her for another woman, yet she had an affair with no one, but two married men. Not once did she care about their wives feelings about being cheated on. Especially James’s wife, since she was dying.
I love Angela Bassett, but I think you’re correct in saying that Angela Bassett is the same character in every movie, at the same time, that’s what we love and respect about her.
