Waiting to Exhale is definitely one of those movies where you can relate to each character. I have been a Robin, a Savannah, a Gloria, and a Bernadine at one point of time in my life and I'm sure I am not the only one. This is a long one yall but here it goes!
    Let's get into it!

I always wondered if Bernie was angry at herself for putting her entire life on hold for a man who ultimately abandoned her. Majority of her monologue revolves around all the sacrifices she made just to ensure he got ahead, while willingly killing herself just to do it. That level of self-betrayal would infuriate me.

    • @forthenostalgia

I think she did. She went through all the stages of grief. She was angry at him for a moment and then angry at herself. Eventually, she got through it and ended up on the other side. That had to have been an intense roller coaster of emotions for her. Her whole life changed in just a night.

That will lead to the daughter feeling like she has to act/date white ..have white friends or well off BLK girlfriends. The son then transform into the white boys "buddy" ...dates their white sister and is only accepted becuz his father has status.. connections and money. Ohhh how I miss Nippy. This film was such a beautiful experience for her. Whitney was a lonely soul, especially towards the end of her life. She had friends but they were the wrong kind of friends and deep down she knew it.
Over the years she always kept in touch with Loretta and Lela, Angela too at times. She would always ask them to come see her and they would plan for the future but it was too late. Whitney loved these women and although she was asked to do the whole soundtrack she wanted to showcase all of the black female talent of that time.
As a child these women were goddesses and now at 32 I’m still watching them shine. I think Nippy was more proud of this film than The Bodyguard.

The ages of each actress at the time of filming:
    Angela Bassett (Bernie) 36
    Whitney Houston (Savannah) 31
    Lela Rochon (Robin) 30
    Loretta Devine (Gloria) 45
We know they made Whitney's character, Savannah, older, 33, but I feel that everyone else's ages were what they were in real life because it really fit for their situations/demeanors. It made sense that Gloria had a teenage son. It made sense that Bernie was in an 11-year marriage with pre-pubescent kids. Lastly, it made sense that Robin and Savannah were naive, dating around and childless. If she didn't have her own place, I would have believed Robin was 25 based on the decisions she made. But having a nice place and a dog made her real age of 30 make sense looking back.

I saw that symbolism too with **Robin, and also how she wouldn't be weak for Russell anymore, that THIS was the only way that SHE could be without him bringing her down...what would be different when the baby comes? she makes 10 times more money than what he makes..u can tell by her choice of men that she was the bread winner..so him being gone would do her and the baby a favor, he was never going to leave his wife...
**Bernie cutting her hair..11 yrs of healthy thick hair and in a split just like her marriage..was cut. She had to let more than John and his clothes ..property go.
**Gloria going from her big main house to the smaller pool house seeing that her lil son is no longer her baby ..he's a grown man ready to come into his grown self. And just cuz his father left her..by tyrik going to Spain does not mean he's leaving her too..but that he's also allowing his mother to just be Gloria again and have someone for herself instead of giving everything for her baby...hoping his father makes the right decision after 17 yrs.
**Savannah finally standing up to her mother..and not letting her mom have so much control over her life ..meaning well but being overbearing all the time. I could relate to this movie 🤦🏾‍♀️❤️‍🩹👑🌸🎖️

Hey! Waiting to Exhale is one of my favorite books, and I have it damn near committed to memory, so I can give you a little more insight. SPOILERS AHEAD!
So in the book, Savannah’s character is pretty accurate to how she’s portrayed by Whitney in the film. The only thing that’s left out, is that she has a fling in the book slightly after she’s decided to stop seeing Kenneth, but before she actually tells him. The man who she sleeps with is someone she meets at a conference in Las Vegas, and she quickly falls for him and his vulnerability, only for him to ghost her after it’s over. It’s that situation, plus Kenneth reaching out to her that cause her to end the relationship. That, and in the book, Lionel actually meets her in Denver, and drives with her to Phoenix so that she’s safe. He’s more of a scam artist than portrayed here. They delve a bit more into her family relationships and such, and she does get a promotion in the end, which proves that she did in fact have it in her to make it as a producer.
Robin’s character in the book is also somewhat accurate, but her subplots including her shopping addiction, and her parents’ ill health really do make her much more sympathetic. Her father is suffering from end stage Alzheimer’s, and her mom is a breast cancer survivor who has to now care for him full time, and is also not well. Her father’s eventual passing is what makes her finally see that life was too short for her to be waiting around on Russell.
Bernie actually does begin to date James in the book, as his wife dies shortly after their encounter. The book touches a lot more on her possible addiction to Xanax, and the mental toll her divorce takes, which leads to depression, and a bad experience with anti depressants. John is outwardly much more of an Oreo than in the movie, and he does marry Kathleen, which also really hurts Bernie. She also gets about $3 mil in her divorce settlement, decides to open her catering company called Bernadine’s Sweet Tooth, and instead of the girls going to the Grand Canyon on NYE, she offers to fly them all to Paris.
Gloria’s character probably deviates the most from all the other characters in the source material. They talk A LOT about her weight, as she’s much heavier than what we see on screen, and why she’s gotten so big. They also discuss why her dating life is why it is, because she kept ending up with men who didn’t do right by her, and emotionally ate as a result. She also didn’t want to keep confusing Tarek, so she gained weight and shut herself off so that she could protect them both. Joseph (the male hairstylist that spills the tea on Bernie) has a much bigger role, and Marvin’s portrayal is pretty accurate. The biggest difference, is that she has a heart attack towards the end of the book and almost dies, but Marvin finds her and saves her, and that is what causes them to commit to each other, and Tarek leaves after this happens. Gloria commits to her weight loss, and Marvin reassures her that he still will love her regardless.
Obviously the movie would be hella long had they included all of this, but I hope this gives a bit more insight!

@@Sasha-vb3mh I have a theory it's because her own marriage fell apart, and she felt like she had to demolish her characters' joy & progress as a result. She slick predicted her own divorce w/Gloria's arc (which left her very openly bitter), and I guess if Terri doesn't get to have a happy ending, nobody does. Not even non-existent people. 😑

I know this movie wasn't necessarily made for us white girls...but it was still one of the best, most relatable movies I've ever seen. It covered the overwhelming pain of putting your faith in the wrong man. Angela Bassett is one of the best actresses of our time. ❤

I thank you for bringing this movie to my attention because man oh man, is this so down to Earth. Not only do I love the characters but I think they are so relatable that whether you are a woman or even a man you could connect to at least one of them. I kind of connected with both Gloria and Robin, in that I sometimes feel I don’t deserve love in return and I can be pretty naive at times. But one thing I take away from all this is that we can all grow from experience and change. Women don’t necessarily need a man to be happy either. If we keep our chin up and focus on what’s most important then you could be damn sure we could be badasses like these four honeys right here! 💙👑 We live our lives like we do and for woman’s happiness, that’s a beautiful thing.
