Great movie !! A classic 🙌🏾 I'll recommend a movie called Out of time with Sanaa, Denzel and Eva Mendes. I saw a few other recommend Brown Sugar as well 👌🏾👌🏾 good stuff.
I love that yall are reacting to black movies! The Wood and Love & Basketball are extremely famous but nobody outside the black community knows about them. Thanks for shedding light on stuff I grew up watching.
Same!!! I guess it shouldn't be that big a deal but it does make me happy that they do. Love the real meaningful discussions afterwards. These guys are great.
I’m white polish girl and I was watching this movie growing up. Another and one of my favourites is Brown Sugar. Oh and Cindy! (movie about black Cindarella, I think it’s from 80’ but so much fun! ) ❤
Really enjoyed the reaction! Fun Fact: Sanaa Lathan (Monica) had to learn how to play Basketball for this role. The director was going back and forth between a basketball player who will need to learn how to act vs an actress who needs to learn how to play… and she chose the actress. I hope you guys continue to tap into Black films! So many good films are missed out on by all of us because people feel like they won’t be able to relate since the cast doesn’t look like them. Some other recs I think you guys will enjoy: Set It Off Eves Bayou The Best Man The Best Man Holiday Brown Sugar Life Love Jones Disappearing Acts Juice Dead Presidents
The crazy thing is she knew nothing about basketball, wasn't even athletic. She was coached on how to play the role...looked so believable. Tells you how good of an actress she is.
She was athletic. Not in the traditional sense but her mom was a dancer and she was trained in dancing since a child so that skillset definitely transferred over which makes alot of sense as to how she pulled this performance off so flawlessly.
I saw the notification, the thumbnail, and couldn't wait for y'all to check out the movie. Sanaa Lathan and Omap Epps definitely did a great job, everyone did. Also, the little girl playing young Monica is Kyla Pratt, the voice of Penny from the Proud Family. Definitely a classic ❤🏀 😊
I love the variety of movies you guys react to! This was a sleepover staple when I was growing up! Another personal favorite with Sanaa Lathan and Taye Diggs is Brown Sugar, and if you're looking for another basketball movie Just Wright with Queen Latifah and Common is also fun. Editing to add Last Holiday with Queen Latifah and LL Cool J because I watch it every Christmas season so it seemed necessary to mention.
Omar & Sanaa was actually in a relationship outside of the movie & they kept it frm the producers & frm the cast so that diffently explains the chemistry between the two of them & it wasn't just great acting skills that was real chemistry, real emotions.....
love this reaction! yall showed great thorough appreciation for the different dynamics & overall themes one thing that hits different watching it as an older woman is Monica & her mom's relationship. when i was younger Monica's defensiveness & slight contempt for her mom was very relatable. Not only did her mom keep trying to push her to be what she wasn't, but who her mom was didn't present as an attractive way to be, seemingly just subservient to her husband & her life revolving around her family, while Monica had worldly aspirations. Monica saw her mom as weak & small. It took their later conversation for her to get a glimpse at how much strength it actually took for her mother to be the rock that the family's success was built on, and Monica was able to take it for granted because of how her mom put in work to make it look like the easy way.
It was dope that this was a 1st time reaction for all of you. This is a classic in my book. I've watched it about 100 times. I hope you guys have watched "Juice" before. If not, that's another good Omar Epps movie.
So glad y'all reacted to this! Great reaction! 👏👏 Coach Carter with Sam Jackson would be a good movie to watch as well! Hopefully it comes up at some time 🙌
This was a surprise but I really enjoyed your reactions and glad you liked it. Have always loved this movie even though it’s been over scrutinized lately
Same and I appreciate the point that they made about them each having great points, bc that's how I feel about the scrutiny. They're all imperfect characters as we're all imperfect ppl.
Tyler Perry's "Why did I get married" 1 and 2 is wild. Would be awesome to get a reaction to those two movies from you guys. This was a great reaction.
The pearl comment made me holler! 😂 I’ve watched this movie countless times and that was never on my mind while watching that scene! 😂 for me personally, this was my favorite movie for years, I was in high school when I first saw it & I’m 35 now. As I’ve gotten older, I realize how toxic their relationship was. He never supported her, he was entitled, physically aggressive, self-centered & disrespectful (I know that was a lot 😂) the scene with the other woman & him casually going on a date was unreal to watch every time. His lack of understanding regarding her curfew, & then him still having to exude dominance over her by winning the last game just to say he wanted to be with her anyway. Toxic, she chased him most of the movie! I love the acting & depth of character or all the actors! Amazing cast, still a really good movie!
no love story is perfect but it worked out in the end for them after all this is based on a true story its not everyone's ideal love story but its theirs to tell
I'm so glad you guys enjoyed this!! It was a staple of my childhood. I love the callback of 11 year old Quincy saying Monica would be his cheerleader and then he ends up being the cheerleader at courtside at the end. So good!
oh how fun! loved that you guys reacted to this! commentary Is fun to listen to as always. I too always appreciated the fact that the characters were so well written and nuanced. They felt real and I think thats why the love story resonates to this day despite its imperfections. I really dont think any other movie wrote the characters so human. So its refreshing even though its 23 years old now.
Yall would love Brothers, it's a great movie with an all-star cast of Morris chestnut, DL hughley, Shemar Moore. Brothers is in my top ten movies, period.
I remember when this came out and we went to see it at the theater. It’s a favorite that I watch every now then. I loved the storyline, the acting and the music. I love the song they played during Monica and Q’s one on one game. It’s still on my playlist. Great reaction guys.
omg I LOVE that you guys reacted to this movie! it's one of my favorites from when I was younger and to me, it still holds up to this day. such amazing acting talent in one film and a fantastic story. also, did you guys not recognize Gabrielle Union?! 😅
I’m LOVING the Blassics!!!!!!! These films are so much of our history, more so than a lot of bigger classics out there and it’s cool to see them still being exposed to new audiences
First off, this was one of my favourite movies growing up and I'm glad you guys watched it on the channel. That line "can't should never be in a man's vocabulary" is one that subconsciously stuck with me and helped me power through on many occasions when things in life have felt difficult. This is one of those movies where the family interactions feel genuine even though not always pleasant. Even looking at the contrast between Q's dad and Monica's mom. Q's dad, not the best husband but did everything to support his son and be active in his life as a father/ present at every game basically. Monica's mom, providing for her daughter in the best way she can, giving the best motherly advice when its needed, but hardly ever showing up at a game which is what her daughter craved from her for so long. I think it does effortlessly what most modern movies are missing now especially when dealing with complexed themes like relationships and family. They try so hard to establish a wrong and right/ good and bad character. They fail to realize that humans are that complexed and two people can be good in their own way, but not good together. This usually ends up coming off as an insult to the audiences intelligence. In this movie you were able to see each person's perspective, and despite seeing their respective flaws, put yourself in their position and understand the emotions they were feeling at the time and the rational behind the decisions they made. 💯
One of the craziest cheers we did back in the eighties was, "See that boy will that ball; slap his big head through that wall!" I really don't think anybody is screaming that one at the top of their lungs in a gym anymore lol.
This movie usually makes me very nostalgic remembering high school and the tumulus emotions one experiences during those once in a lifetime years!...The music...clothes...very relatable. GR8 reaction guys! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
The role of Monica was played by acclaimed actress Sanaa Lathan who has been in numerous hit movies, Out of Time with Denzel Washington, The Best Man , Brown Sugar, Alien vs Predator,The Perfect Guy , and she was also in the final scene of The Wood. Those are just a few of her movies. By the way, Omar and Sanaa were dating at the time as well, awesome review guy's.
From what I remember from the directors commentary, they didn't show alot of basketball scenes with Sanaa because she didn't know how to play basketball....so they found a few different ways to hide it with the shots they did use They originally did have a decent ball player for the role but she couldn't act and Sanaa already had chemistry with Omar
This channel is definitely the MOST adventurous, i would not have expected this movie but i gotta change my perspective. You guys are a TOP TIER reactors channel. Also if were doing recommendation. WAITING TO EXHALE! My mom watched this movie everytime she was upset with my dad lol
Love seeing you watching the movies i grew up on. I would love to see you watch Why Did I get Married or Whats Love Got to Do with It. That one has angela bassett, and oak loves her ❤️
Fun reaction I grew up with this movie love this movie. I hate how the Internet trying to play it lately there’s much more nuance to this film than people give it credit for not to mention the soundtrack is fire.🔥🔥
Again I have to say I love how diverse you guys are when it comes to movies I don’t see a lot of channels who venture off from their comfort zone but first “the wood” now “love and basketball” these were staples and a must watch for a black household so I appreciate you guys giving it a chance. 4:52 ouuuu the trauma of having to get our hair combed 😂 back when we used to get popped with the comb.
Yeeeaaahhh I saw yall at that Play For Your Heart part. I think every one gets a little emotional and teary eyed That's a major scene one of those Women definitely face full of tears snot running out their nose angry at Omar's character but then at the last they just like you guys did And Men definitely gets choked up and inside us we want them to be together...
I love you guys reactions to the black classics. Please do more. There are so many that you’ll enjoy. Soul Food, Boys n the hood and Dead Presidents are definitely worth a watch and definitely timeless classics in the black community. Keep reacting. You guys are great❤
Love to see y'all reaction to these classic black films. High school memories back in the day from this film . The main actress in the movie name is Sanna Lathan she was in the The Best Man The Wood
If you guys liked Sanaa Lathan as Monica, I HIGHLY recommend "Out of Time". She co-stars with Denzel Washington. It was very suspenseful from beginning to end.
In "Something New" Alfre Woodard and Sanaa Lathan have a very similar dynamic as mother and daughter again. Dont they also play mother and daughter in "The Family That Preys"?
ok I might need to join patreon to get in on these suggestions. I love that yall reacted to this! One of my favs is Last Holiday with Queen Latifah and LL Cool J. Also, if yall haven't seen yet: think like a man, best man, two can play that game, ray, barbershop, beauty shop, lean on me, why did I get married yall would love. Sister Act 2 is good too with Whoopi and Lauryn Hill but it has singing, if yall dont mind.
Love that you are continuing to explore black cinema. First The Wood and now Love and Basketball. I wrote this on your The Wood reaction so yes Imma copy and paste it here with the same suggestions. Again, in no particular order: -The Best Man (filled with a who’s who of black cinema, circa 90’s/00’s) -Love Jones (y’all talked about Taye Diggs, nah. Lorenz Tate is the OG pretty boy) -The Five Heartbeats (there’s singing but WELL worth it; the always great but under appreciated Robert Townsend) -Cooley High (now that’s taking things way back in time) -Juice (NYC) -Menace II Society (LA) -Soul Food (Chicago) -Think Like a Man (a good time) We out here ✌🏽
My favourite line in this movie is when Monica says" I've been in love with u since i was (age). This shit just won't go away! That's deep. I think we all have been there and moved on in one way or another but still remember that special one
You all have to react to The Best Man (1999), which has actors/actresses from both The Wood and Love & Basketball and is IMO the best of the three movies. The two sequels are solid too.
So happy that you enjoyed this film. I would love for you to react to The Best Man, Brown Sugar, Girls Trip, Boomerang and Harlem Nights. I think you guys would love them.
Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps crushed this! A captivating sports romance that delves into various real-life themes. What was your reaction? Did we miss anything?

Oh! Also The Best Man!! Taye Diggs, Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, Terence Howard etc. It's a hilarious film, too.
Great movie !! A classic 🙌🏾 I'll recommend a movie called Out of time with Sanaa, Denzel and Eva Mendes. I saw a few other recommend Brown Sugar as well 👌🏾👌🏾 good stuff.

Eves Bayou
The Best Man
The Best Man Holiday
Brown Sugar

Disappearing Acts

Poetic Justice, Deliver us from Eva, and Kingdom Come should go on that list too.
The director, Gina Prince-Bythewood, is seen in the USC game sliding on the floor with Monica.
Two can play that game
Not putting coach carter is a sin

Great review. I definitely share the sentiment that it’s NOT a sports movie. To me it was a coming of age romance.
If you guys liked Sanaa Lathan as Monica, I HIGHLY recommend "Out of Time". She co-stars with Denzel Washington. It was very suspenseful from beginning to end.

I wrote this on your The Wood reaction so yes Imma copy and paste it here with the same suggestions. Again, in no particular order:
-The Best Man (filled with a who’s who of black cinema, circa 90’s/00’s)
-Love Jones (y’all talked about Taye Diggs, nah. Lorenz Tate is the OG pretty boy)
-The Five Heartbeats (there’s singing but WELL worth it; the always great but under appreciated Robert Townsend)
-Cooley High (now that’s taking things way back in time)
-Juice (NYC)
-Menace II Society (LA)
-Soul Food (Chicago)
-Think Like a Man (a good time)
We out here ✌🏽
I love how in black cinema suggestions our list tend to all match hahaha I wrote up something similar 😂😂
YAYYY I’m so happy y’all did this movie

You all have to react to The Best Man (1999), which has actors/actresses from both The Wood and Love & Basketball and is IMO the best of the three movies. The two sequels are solid too.
So happy that you enjoyed this film. I would love for you to react to The Best Man, Brown Sugar, Girls Trip, Boomerang and Harlem Nights. I think you guys would love them.
Sanaa had never played basketball before filming this movie. Used to be one of my fav movies. Ive seen it so many times I cant count. Classic!
Another great movie with this mother/daughter duo is The Family That Preys by Tyler Perry. Definitely worth a watch!!!!
