  • Join me for a tour of one of the rare William Babington 7ft long Disney Nautilus model kits.
    A little rough around the edges, this will build into a beautiful boat with some TLC, time, energy and talent!
    It's sold to a customer down here in FL, so I won't be finishing it off...
    Thanks for watching!

    Hey Bob, Many thanks for this video. It was informative and entertaining as well. The Nautilus is one of my personal favorites having watched the Disney film as a youngster and being impressed. It looks like it's going to take you quite a while to finish this project. Thanks again.-- Tom

    Hmmm... So when is some extravagant billionaire going to create a full-scale, operational prototype? And I don't mean the Disneyworld ride, but a real, operational submarine.
    Now THAT I'd love to see!
    But anyway, great video. Keep 'em coming!

    Nice job with the repairs you made. I bought one of these when they where new (25 years ago). Paid a lot for it and was very disappointed when I got it. It has all the problems you pointed out. William Babbington called me full of apologies. He said one of his partners was pulling parts from the molds he made that where not of good quality as you show here. William promised to make it right for me. It has been 25 years and I have not heard from him.

    I guess You are allredy familiar with it, but for those who are not, the guys on Vulcania submarines made a functional model based on he's old minisubmarine project, wich means that the nautilus model has a real, fully functioning miniature submarine inside of it.

    I still remember seeing the movie model on display at Disney World when I was a kid.
    I’ve been looking for a kit and am ready to spend some big money. I am 3D printer literate and can model just about anything.
    My question is what is the best and biggest quality kit available today? I want scale details and will equip it for rc. I was looking at the Engel stuff but was wondering what else is available.

    • @RCSubGuy
      @RCSubGuy  4 года назад

      There was a 66.5" kit on the market years ago, but it's out of production. The only other one is the Engel kit you mentioned, which is more Nautilus-esque than the real deal. I offer 31" kits that are great for static display or RC. Lots of videos on my channel of those boats, including a step-by-step tutorial on RC'ing the model. I'll be releasing a 48" kit late this year, too.

    I've got the 1/72 scale Nautilus, and it took some effort to get the upper and lower hull halves joined. At the time it cost $400 dollars. You didn't mention the price tag for the 7 foot kit. I can only imagine, but how much was it ?

    • @RCSubGuy
      @RCSubGuy  4 года назад

      I actually don't know what they retailed for back in the day. Nowadays, I'd say they'd start at $1500, but as they're just not available, I wouldn't be surprised if a prime example ran in excess of $3K.

      I am not only the proud owner of the boat featured in Bob's video above, but was also lucky enough to have purchased one of the original Babbington 7 Foot Nautilus kits. I paid $1500.00 for the kit which was about 20 years ago from a specialty science fiction shop that is long since out of business. I remember the cost of shipping to Florida was horrendous. Bob has done an amazing job getting this particular boat in workable condition. My goal is to restore as much of the Nautilus as possible which has certainly been made easier with Bob's 3D replacement parts.
