For the benefit of any other readers, here is a 'cut & paste' from Google: It's pretty simple, really. A league is an old-fashioned measurement of distance that's roughly equivalent to three miles. 3 x 20,000 = 60,000 miles. This is the distance Aronnax, Nemo, and company travel under the sea, not the depth they go while traveling. And also from Wiki. English-speaking world[edit] On land, the league is most commonly defined as three miles, though the length of a mile could vary from place to place and depending on the era. At sea, a league is three nautical miles (3.452 miles; 5.556 kilometers). So, I've learned something today too. Regards Mark in the UK
Harper Goff designed this version in one nite and when Walt say it next day....that was it...accepted. Further refinements were made as the film story developed. I knew the man.
Man I would give all of my money to own one of those!! Just seeing the top of Nautilus sticking out of the water like that, and going full collision speed under water just looks so iconic! I love the Nautilus, I really want a model or something of her!
I was confused 60,000 miles down would be deep but Verne was referencing the distance traveled not the depth or it would be fathoms. See my comment for the Wikipedia link. You would think that someone who loves Jules Verne as much as me would just know these things...
A league is approximately three nautical miles, varies by country and time period. "20,000 Leagues" is not the depth, but the distance the Nautilus traveled underwater. The circumference of the Earth is about eight thousand leagues, so the Nautilus' voyage was equivalent to circumnavigating the Earth three times. In 1960, the USS Triton became the first submarine to go around the world underwater - ninety years after Verne's novel.
Geoff's boat went 20,000 leagues under the sea. A league is 8 feet. That means Geoff's boat only traveled 30 miles! Oh dear Geoff, you've let us down mate. Fantastic model and great video.
just an FYI, A League is a unit of distance not depth! One League is approximately 3.452 Miles so the title is referring to around 69000 miles traveled under water!
That looks Soooooooo cool! Now if you could only make the 'eyes' light up and then Rev-Up the engine to make it go Fast through the water like it did when it was going to ram a ship. And then film it around twilight or sunset.
Everyone keeps referring to the Nautilus diving to a depth of 20,000 leagues but that’s not what the author was saying. It’s 20,000 leagues around the world underwater.
Ha! That was cool. Was hoping to see it up on step, like in the movie when the sub would take out the ships. The way the water flowed over the bridge and the 2 like eyes.
Epic model. '20,000 Leagues Under The Sea' is a reference to the distance travelled while underwater, not the depth. 1 league = three nautical miles (3.452 miles or 5.556 kilometres)
This is a nice build, and underwater vid stirs imagination. However it lacks the most menacing feature, the Glowing yellow light. from the monsters eyes
Wonderful! Now how about trying to make an RC controlled Giant Squid to attack it now and then? Probably it will be incredibly hard. ;) Btw, it doesn't mean 20000 leagues below the sea; that would be almost 11,000 KM, about the dameter of the Earth! It means a journey of 20000 leagues travelling below the sea.
@@stuntpenguin if you look at my other comment you will see it is a link to the Wikipedia page and also that I know it is the distance and not the depth and Wikipedia has it down that 20,000 leagues is 80,000 kilometers this comment was me trying to convert the distance to miles in my head

Face slap.. the guys think that the book title means the sub went 20,000 leagues UNDER the ocean surface. LOL. That is not the meaning of the title. It means the sub traveled that far... while under water... read the book! LOL

Essential RC hello essential
Love this. It’s still my favorite movie. What a beautiful location too! That water is so clear!
Harper Goff created a sub that resembled both an alligator and a shark. A superb design and a great tribute to imagination,

Coolest shot of an RC sub I've ever seen at 3:45
Harper Goff designed this version in one nite and when Walt say it next day....that was it...accepted. Further refinements were made as the film story developed. I knew the man.
Very impressive...both the model and the underwater shots.
That's like the coolest RC sub I've ever seen 🤷
James Mason, the BEST captain Nemo
The definitive Captain Nemo....that man had class oozing out of him
Into rc planes myself but really enjoyed that. Thanks. Mike.

Collision speed! FULL!
They made my favorite Science Fiction vehicle in RC form. Well next to the Tardis from Dr. Who.
Their is a fantastic feature length documentary on the making of that classic movie on RUclips...watched it last night, fascinating
I loved this RC nautilus from 20,000 leagues under the sea. 🌊
One nautical league = three nautical miles!!!! That's deep!
I was confused 60,000 miles down would be deep but Verne was referencing the distance traveled not the depth or it would be fathoms. See my comment for the Wikipedia link. You would think that someone who loves Jules Verne as much as me would just know these things...
I was expecting that giant squid to be chasing it! Way cool!!
That's a fantastic model. Looks gorgeous.
For those of you who are wondering, the movie Nautilus was designed by Harper Goff.

that's very beautifully done,i love it!
Harper Goff was the name the fellow wanted that was responsible for the Disney design of the Nauttilus.
The novel title *20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA* was referring to having traveled 20,000 leagues around the world while submerged underwater.
Awesome
Great model, great video - 20,000 Leagues was the distance the Nautilus traveled in the book (60,000 Nautical Miles).
Circumference of the earth.coincidence??
Beautiful! I'd love to see it ram another ship or sub!
just an FYI, A League is a unit of distance not depth! One League is approximately 3.452 Miles so the title is referring to around 69000 miles traveled under water!
Beautiful
It's really Amazing as the movie
That looks Soooooooo cool! Now if you could only make the 'eyes' light up and then Rev-Up the engine to make it go Fast through the water like it did when it was going to ram a ship. And then film it around twilight or sunset.
Hi! What color is the propeller?
Everyone keeps referring to the Nautilus diving to a depth of 20,000 leagues but that’s not what the author was saying. It’s 20,000 leagues around the world underwater.
Ha! That was cool. Was hoping to see it up on step, like in the movie when the sub would take out the ships. The way the water flowed over the bridge and the 2 like eyes.
Would love it if someone put a camera inside the ship like the Parlor and the command/steering room, let us see out of it like we were inside.
A league is 3.45234 miles (5.556 kilometers). So, 20,000 of them would be 69,046.8 miles or 111,120 kilometers.
According to Google, a league is 3 miles. 20,000 refers to the distance the Nautilus travels under sea in the book.
*_"It's burned everlastingly in my memory."_*
Epic model.
'20,000 Leagues Under The Sea' is a reference to the distance travelled while underwater, not the depth.
1 league = three nautical miles (3.452 miles or 5.556 kilometres)
"It's like bathing in liquid light" - captain Nemo
This is a nice build, and underwater vid stirs imagination. However it lacks the most menacing feature, the Glowing yellow light. from the monsters eyes
1 League = 3 miles = 4.828 Km = 2.607 Nautical Miles
one of the enduring displays at Disneyland for ,many years
Looks like a Sturgeon as it passes under the water 🤩
Looks like s fun boat.
Internal lights?
Awesome amazing detail right down to the rusty rivets
20,000 is the distance traveled, NOT the depth!
LEAGUE is 3 miles that a measure of distance not depts. and the designer was Harper Goff
Thky ya how nice an did. You built
Wonderful!
Now how about trying to make an RC controlled Giant Squid to attack it now and then? Probably it will be incredibly hard. ;)
Btw, it doesn't mean 20000 leagues below the sea; that would be almost 11,000 KM, about the dameter of the Earth! It means a journey of 20000 leagues travelling below the sea.
A league is a nautical distance of just less than 3.5 miles.
20,000 leagues is like almost 50,000 miles
It's over 111,000 km... it refers to distance travelled while underwater rather than a specific depth.
@@stuntpenguin I think a lot of people make that mistake about the title, they think leagues is depth.
@@stuntpenguin if you look at my other comment you will see it is a link to the Wikipedia page and also that I know it is the distance and not the depth and Wikipedia has it down that 20,000 leagues is 80,000 kilometers this comment was me trying to convert the distance to miles in my head

@@stuntpenguin this is where its says 80,000 kilometers which in miles is like 47,000 and some miles
20,000 leagues is how far they traveled why under water not how deep they were.
until THUNDERBALL IT HELD THE RECORD FOR THE MOST UNDERWATER WORK
What title has the current record? My guess is the one with Cuba Gooding Jr where he is a deep sea navy diver
Cool factoid tho
A league in length is about three miles!
One fathom is 6 feet
One league is 5.5 kilometers
20,000 hours on the workbench.
It was designed by a gentalman called Haper Goff.
A league is three miles....
A Twain is 12 foot
What gets me is the design actually works.
20,000 leagues refers to distance traveled, not depth...according to QI.
20,000 leagues under the sea? No, no, no... 20,000 leagues over the competition
20,000 leagues is the distance traveled under water not the depth
I had to look it up
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twenty_Thousand_Leagues_Under_the_Sea#Title
The link says 20,000 leagues is 80,000 kilometers
A league is a few miles, it’s distance not depth.

OK. Seems a bit risky. These things looked quite fragile. I would have thought you might crack the fibreglass hull if you do that. Carry on 😎
Fancy thinking a league is only 8ft lol!
Face slap.. the guys think that the book title means the sub went 20,000 leagues UNDER the ocean surface. LOL. That is not the meaning of the title. It means the sub traveled that far... while under water... read the book! LOL
Owo
A league is THREE MILES. A fathom is SIX FEET.
Awesome
