  • This model was built over a period of over twenty years by talented artist, Ken Dowd. Everything was built by hand, and no CAD or 3D printing was utilized. Everything was scratch built by hand. Every room. Every corridor. Every pot, pan, crate, barrel and valve are modeled.
    This is, undoubtedly, a masterpiece.
Finished model with installed LED lighting can be viewed here:

I'm watching this for the second time, he's a true artist! Amazing work!! I purchased the movie for my 65th birthday 😂 I remember seeing it that first time at our local theater on Saturday afternoon with my sisters!! I think if my Dad could have gotten away with it, he would have been right there beside us stuffing his face with popcorn too 😂❤!! I bought it for him as a Christmas present one year, he was telling the kids to sit down and be quiet, lol 😂, we all enjoyed the show!

I think if it were to be in a museum it would have to take up an entire room and not just confined to single display. Each separate piece would have to be under glass on a wheel so it could turn to show off as much interior detail as possible with a small picture of the sub with an arrow showing where on the ship it fits. A separate model of the completed sub could be in a separate display in the middle of the room with THIS particular deep dive video on display at 4 different areas so as many people could watch in part or in full as they wish. There should also be two walls featuring a large-scale blueprint. Perhaps along the walls there could be pipes and assorted gadgets to add to the "feel" of a submarine and the general lighting scheme could be splashes of blues and greens. Just a thought. But OMG what a stunning and incredible achievement.

  • @abnurtharn2927

That model would be amazing if he 3D printed it. The fact that he hand crafted it is incredable. If only there were cameras small enough to move around inside the intact model and still have decent picture quality.
A tourable, textured and lit version built in something like Unreal 5 based on this would be SO popular.

It looks like he found treasure in that rabbit hole he fell into. The idea that the salon set of the movie would not fit into an actual submarine hull was the beginning of a very interesting journey for him. I'm grateful that he decided to share it with us. Thanks.

Back in 1988 my wife and I went to Disney World. At the time, the 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea ride with the Nautilus was still in operation. As you perhaps know, Disney sells a hat for EVERYTHING. One of my cousins who collects different hats asked me to try and find him one that was unusual. I looked and looked at all the gift shops which were themed with the attractions and rides but could not find anything that truly stood out. Then we got to the 20000 Leagues ride. The attendants that were directing people through the cordons all wore the horizontal striped sailor shirts with Watch Hats (similar to Chauffeur's caps) with the stylized "N" and Trident above the brim representing the Nautilus. BINGO!!! I found it! So I asked where I could get one. They sort of looked puzzled and said "I don't think they sell them here". I could not believe it! It's not often that Disney misses a revenue/marketing opportunity.

Breathtaking Ken Dowd and Bob. Every modeler-maker needs to see this series, beautiful. I am a book collector, I grew very fond of Disney Studios illustrations of 20 000 Leagues in their boxed hardbacks and thought If i could find a good hardback of Verne's novel i would tip them in.
It turned out the Navel Institute Press published 20 000 Leagues in a unabridged, annotated and illustrated edition (restored from the original French texts) in 1993 by Walter Miller and Frederick Walter. Recommended.

Ken is, in my opinion, one of a small number of superb master model craftsmen, such as Rojas Bazan & Young C. Park (both of whom have scratch built incredibly detailed, large scale aircraft models from metal, & by using hand fabrication methods).
This model of the Disney Nautilus submarine is simply outstanding (clearly) in every way; detail, design, planning, craftsmanship & creativity, to say the least, probably. Since there were no overall definite interior layout arrangement plans available for the movie submarine (I gather), of course several interior compartments & associated details & size would need to be based on Ken's own analysis, research & best determination, of which he clearly gave much consideration. That the model was constructed to be disassembled, with very closely fitting sub assemblies, is also amazing, as a stand alone feature of outstanding craftsmanship.
I believe model should definitely be preserved in museum conditions.
