Kangaroo refers to the Kangaroo Court or a fake court. The song is about hypocrisy in the government and court system specifically against pot. So you get the Pot calling the kettle black and weed as a double meaning to the title

Im not sure where the expression comes from. But when I hear "Kangaroo Court" I assume its a fu*k#ing joke of a legal proceeding. Minds have been made up long before hearing both sides of an argument.

I was watching a Finnish Vocalist react to this video earlier tonight, and I was thinking to type this exact response to her because she didn't have this layer of understanding of the lyric. Understandably so, so much history how can you know it all yet it gives so much depth to the lyricists that can write a truly deep song
Just to clarify Ian's remark, a kangaroo court is an unofficial court held by a group of people in order to try someone regarded, especially without good evidence, as guilty of a crime or misdemeanour. In other words, the Kangaroo court decides guilt before the evidence is heard. So, this song concerns both state and individual with particular reference to drug misuse (or use). Keenan (the vocalist and lyricist) is personally opposed to drug use, doesn't use himself (though has in the past) and isn't judging people who do. Governments and law-makers on the other hand take high handed and officious positions against drug users while those same law-makers may be chasing the white line themselves. Just how many Americans are serving time for possession, dealing or use of drugs? Let me tell you. 44% of all incarcerations in America are drug related...
You got the "pot calling the kettle black" thing quicker than anyone I've seen so far. It brings me so much joy seeing someone react to Tool for the fist time. As I understand it, this song is about the time a friend of his, on his way home from visiting Maynard, was busted with a little bit of cannabis by an Arizona sheriff who threw the book at him and then the sheriff was later busted for prostitution and methamphetamine sales. Kangaroo refers to kangaroo court, a court proceeding where the outcome is already determined, so the trial is just for show.

Maynard is so obviously saying CHOSEN indigo, despite the cozened lyric being apt. Any live version I've seen/heard and when I saw them live in AC (unf my only time), I heard CHOSEN. The 'ch' is clear and I never hear a 'd' at the end. I know I'm not crazy, nor deaf (yet LOL).

@@Mertztillithurts Don't matter how good your ears are, singer/song writers are well known for saying words slightly wrong or saying one thing that sounds like another. And for those not familiar with the word cozened then of course they will hear chosen. To top it off cozened makes way more sense in that line then chosen, as well as going with the theme of the rest of the song.

From my understanding the origin of the lyrics came about in response to a judge or prosecutor who had given a friend a really harsh punishment for pot getting arrested for either harder drugs or trafficking a couple years later. It’s about the hypocrisy of the government drug policy and unjust laws and punishments.

You were pretty spot on with what the song was meant to convey. Love when people with high vocabulary intelligence hear tool the first time. Every note played and every word in the lyrics are very intentional and the production is impeccable. I would say that Tool as a band has the intent and ability to make us become better human beings. We are all just tiny vibrations after all, music therefore can touch the soul profoundly.

8:06 What you’re hearing is the bass guitar, the lower pitched notes. The higher pitched whining on top is the normal guitar in drop D tuning (so even the guitar is lower pitched by two notes than regular guitars). I think the bass is also down tuned, but I’m not sure yet.

In the instrumental section where you were talking about the guitar - the guitar and bass swap the traditional roles during the "solo" - the guitar is the chuggy rhythm part and the higher/screechy tones are the bass.
