      @@dirkguijt2810 I fucking love Tool it's one of my fav bands ever, and they have played some of the best live shows I've ever seen in my life. They are not for everyone. Other music is absolutely art, including pop, and everything else. Just because it is ubiquitous does not mean it is bad. When I was younger, I thought pop was trash music, now I can appreciate it when my wife is having the time of her life to it lol, even though I prefer things like Jazz, Rap, Classical, Funk, Rock, and Metal. I think Tool is mind blowing, she can hear that it is very intricate and complex, but she just doesn't like it. Totally fair.

    That “feeling” is a time signature. Hip/hop is in 4/4, as is most pop and a lot of rock. The count is 1&2&3&4. Tool is all over the map

    • @primateinterfacetechnologi6220
      @primateinterfacetechnologi6220 9 месяцев назад +10

      It's crazy how they manage to make "four" sound like it isn't... As this piece is one of their few basically in 4/4, except for a couple of long breaks that are in "three".
      But yeah: they utilize all time signatures, and every other rhythmic trick in the book, and some that aren't in the book.
      Peace and love.

    • @Lloocii
      @Lloocii 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@primateinterfacetechnologi6220They really do a great job with this song in making you feel it's not in 4/4.
      Part of that is the few bars of 3/4 and the rest is their dancing around the 4.
      Meshuggah is a bit like that. They almost always have a 4/4 on the high hat and the rest is doing an extra beat here a polyrhythm there, a half measure etc.

    Your comment about not being able to find the time is spot on. Tool is a group of exceptional musicians. Their drummer, widely considered one of if not the best in the world. To challenge themselves and make composing fun, they do crazy time signatures, changes, drops, and just about every other cool musical trick in the book. They're so tight, that when they come back on the 1, it's scary how in sync they are.

    You got it. They play in freaky time sigs that I don't even think they count, I think they just learned it by playing and writing together for a long time. How Maynard makes melodies out of it is what's so remarkable, even if his voice weren't so amazing, he makes these math tempos accessible. It's pure art. Sometimes I think they are an evolution of the band Yes with a little Rush thrown in. But they are just Tool. They exist in their own orbit.

    Their album art is done by the artist Alex Grey, who is definitely a wizard of translating psychedelic experiences into visual art. Tool concepts are a blend of psychology and spirituality.
    Check out their song Lateralus
    They incorporate the Fibonacci sequence (a mathematical formula in which each number is the sum of the two preceding ones 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21, into infinity found in all nature.. pine cone, sea shells, flowers, broccoli, etc.) into the syllables of lyrics and time signatures of the song. The concept expands on our own nature of growth thru life and being willing to transcend and evolve. It relates to the nature of the Fibonacci sequence. This song is a mind bending way of educating us thru a masterpiece of art. Psychological Bars await 🔥🔥🔥

    Tool use polyrhythms in such a specific and smart way. You get this almost uncomfortable feeling as it begins to feel things are falling apart, yet there is enough of a groove to keep you engaged, and then the various time signature reunite in a glorious drop that lands harder than any you’ve ever heard, because of the friction building in that uncountable comfort.

    16:51 - Yeah, we've found that the first Tool song that tends to resonate the most with rappers is The Pot because of the approachable scheme and the sick doubles and triples in the word play.
    Vocal coaches tend to resonate the most with Sober (especially the live video performance) because they can see Maynard embodying the character and delivering so much power from such a strange set of positions.

    BP, I'd love to see you react to Tool's songs "Wings For Marie" and "10,000 Days (Wings part 2)." They should be done together (Like Ren's Jenny and Screech). Maynard wrote these songs about the death of his mother after a long battle, and I think they would really resonate with you. If you do them, please find lyric videos or have the lyrics pulled up.
    Maynard's mother was paralyzed for many years. She always maintained strong faith throughout her life, even though her congregation was very cruel to her and implied that it was punishment for something she did wrong. Maynard was very angry about it as a younger man, but this is a more mature Maynard. It's a beautiful piece, and I think you would really love it.

      There’s so much wordplay in this song, both in the content, double, triple-entendres galore. Even in the pronunciation, if you listen again. Nice initial reaction, though! Also, a favorite of mine is the “don’t go tossing your ‘stones’ around,” meaning the government’s tossing their Big-D*ck Energy & hypocrisy towards the “War on Drugs,” specifically in this case, that sweet, sweet cheeba, my friend. Mary Jane.

    Welcome to the Tool party. Maynard James Keenan of Tool (Puscifer & A Perfect Circle) is a lyrical genius. Yes, he fronts 3 bands.... at once. Writes and sings for all 3. AND, runs his winery in Jerome AZ.
    Lateralus, Jambi, Descending, 7empest... the Tool list is long! Start off with "Pneuma, Danny cam live". The level of drumming you'll witness will leave you in awe. End of The Pot actually has it right there.... Danny Carey in the Boston jersey.

      Most of the art that people associate with Tool is Alex Gray's art.
      Adam though did special effects for the movie industry. Jurassic Park and some other things iirc.
      The Art in alot of their music videos is his. Claymation type stuff very cool in its own way.

    That feeling you felt is the point. Man I went through a court battle back in 2010 that included the rights to my daughter and or 50yrs in prison. This was my fight song right here. This and Jambi. Both on this album. First month without her all I could do was grieve and cry. Day after day was one long day of nothing but gut wrenching crying. This song pissed me off and lit the fire within me to stand and do what needed to be done. And so I did....

    You're a hip hop guy who came to love metal. I'm a metal guy who came to love hip-hip. When you said you never really appreciated the poetry and art that metal was bringing to their lyrics, well I felt the same way about hip hop. I didn't understand it, but you and Knox gave me an appreciation for the art that has turned into all out passion. I love to see that respect and admiration for the art and craft flowing both directions.
    Unity in music.

    This has to be my favorite band of ALL TIME! I would call them Alternative Rock. But they have so many GREAT albums! I love every song on their albums. Their lead singer Maynard James Keenan is an artist of genius proportions. He is so amazing with lyrics and the way he sings. In fact, look up a song called "Pneuma" where it only shows the drummer(Danny Carey) playing because he is known as "The Octopus" because he's such an amazing drummer! I love Tool! Please, if you haven't already, i was hoping you could do a reaction on "Pneuma" ? Thank you for all you do! Peace! 🩷🌷

    Alex Grey is the artist that does their album cover/inserts. Loved your reaction. Polyrhythmic structure…one of my favs to listen to and play. Youll find it across many genres, but notably in jazz music and in world music/traditional west african percussion. If you keep going down the road on the journey of Tool’s music here, we are always happy to come along with you. 😊

    Glad to see you covering some Tool, there's so much content to sift through. A lot of Tool fans, myself included, chase the dragon watching people react to this band in particular because they're such a unique outlier in music, so it's fun to see people process what's happening. In my opinion, from the videos of yours I've watched I think you'll enjoy the lyricism and wordplay that's found in a lot of their songs. Hope to see you cover some more from them!
