Your boy Paul got you headed in the right direction with this band. Legend level musicianship great lyrics and unpredictable. They are a total one off, once in a lifetime band. With Tool you need to come with an open mind and let them take you on the journey that each song takes you on. I'm a fan of this band for 30 years now and I'm still discovering things in their songs I listen to countless times.
There is another! King gizzard and the lizard wizard are a universe as big as this one.
You said the magic word: EXPERIENCE. Tool is one of those bands who's music take you to another plain of consciousness.
I have so many memories that still give me goose bumps, memories of landing from shrooms with friends as you come back indoors after adventures outside, and just put on The Pot while a buddy rolled one for the team, while I popped an expensive bottle of wine for the same.
I had to take a dump once.

The band records the instrumental part of the song. The singer listens to it, gets a feel for it and writes the lyrics accordingly. It’s part of the reason it all goes together so we’ll. Plus they’re all top notch musicians.

Always lyric videos if you can. There’s one live performance that you really should check out ... Danny Carey “Pneuma” live drum cam. Danny is considered by many to be the best drummer ever.
Schism is more technical and less aggressive but still a masterpiece, , 46 & 2 is even more a ripping banger than this one, and AEnima is angry yet beautiful at the same time, all brilliant tunes

TOOL concerts might surprise you. A transparent veil around the band that they project images onto... incredible lights shooting across the arena. And of course the band sounds amazing. But a lot of us TOOL fans are a bit old for mosh pits. :)

I saw a reaction video to Tool recently from a classical composer. He was very impressed with the talent and technique involved and said something like, "I don't think anyone else sounds like Tool because nobody else can." I can't say he's wrong. They are that unique.

Tool are some of the best musicians in the world. When listening to them you really just need to empty your mind and let the flow of the songs just take you away. Many of the lyrics are complex and deep. You'll find yourself googling the meaning of their songs trying to understand what the hell was going on. Also, the time signatures that Danny Carey plays on the drums are very unusual. When you're a new listener to their music it's hard to keep the rhythm but you eventually get used to it and it will feel natural. At some point you need to check out the drum cam live version of Danny Carey playing "Pneuma" on youtube. The guy is 60 years old and you'll be amazed watching him play. It's a surreal experience!
Tool is band that I truly believe make art. Music isn’t a strong enough word for the experience. They really are masters of their craft! You are in for some amazement on the TOOL journey friend.

I truly enjoyed watching your reaction. It has been a tough day and watching this changed my mood and brought a smile to my face, I hope you continue your personal journey into Tool as I have the past 30 years of my life. They are very deep with their lyrics and their music takes quite a bit of time to create as they are definitely more artists than just musicians as it has taken them 33 years to produce 5 full length albums and 1 EP - think Quality over Quantity. I've seen them 25 times in concert and will see them twice more in November. You should expect to hear from the Tool Army with plenty of requests and feedback. By album, here are my favorite tracks and, in addition to agreeing with your co-worker to avoid music videos, I will add a suggestion to avoid live performances until after experiencing the song by itself first.

2. Swamp Song - Undertow Album
3. 46 & 2 - Aenima album
4. Lateralus - Lateralus album
5. Right in Two - 10,000 Days album
6. Invincible - Fear Inoculum

Tool was mainly known as an Industrial group back in the early 90's. I recommend checking out bands The Prodigy, Nitzer Ebb, Lords of Acid and Front 242 to name a few. Industrial is almost like a metal dance music.

This song is a masterclass in turn of phrase and hard punching imagery. "Weeping shades of cozened indigo, got lemon juice up in your eye?" Indigo is an artificial color, and lemon juice to force tears in court has to be my favorite bit.

If you ever get a chance to see them live, DO IT. Their light show is absolutely insane. They’ve been my favorite band since this album came out in 2006 and I’ve seen them 4 times. That’s definitely a good list to start with. Forty Six & 2 would be a great choice next

Anyone who likes heavier,spiritual,thought provoking,smart & honest music done by some of the best musicians on the planet should be a Tool fan,to the uninitiated I’ve described them as a “Heavy Pink Flyod”….I can’t think of a more accurate description at the moment…..best band on the planet & has been for 25+ years….for real 🖤I’ve been a fan since 1st hearing “Sober”….it was summer 93 & Tool & another unknown band at the time “Rage Against the Machine” had landed spots on the main stage at that summers Lollapalooza ….I 1st heard Rage around that time as well …I’ll never forget it …I was in my work truck in Arlington Va (the DMV) & my radio was tuned to 98Rock Baltimore…..late 91-early 94 was an amazing time to be a young music lover
