Making a Large Apothecary Cabinet Featuring a Frame and Panel Door

- This is another one of my apothecary cabinets! This one was designed to hold shoes, which is what dictated the size of the drawers. Larger shoes like boots will held on the left side behind the frame and panel door. Please leave any questions in the comments below! Thanks!

Wow, very detailed. I especially liked your clear explanations without the distractions of background music. Being a musician, I find it hard to ignore background music, also your clear voice is appreciated.
Beautiful piece and great craftsmanship, John. The bookmatched continuous grain on the door panels and the continuous grain on the drawer fronts really make this piece gorgeous. I agree with you about the door panel being the favorite part.
Thanks a lot Jay. I appreciate you watching the video!
BEautiful. That grain match is outstanding.
Superb. That grain continuity is magnificent.
Absolutely gorgeous!
That looks great. The continuous grain drawer fronts look awesome.
Beautiful piece of craftsmanship, John!
That’s absolutely beautiful John! 👌Thank you very much for sharing!
Beautiful piece.
Spectacular build! Great video!
Brilliant job. Beautiful. The registration block idea; will use.
Super awesome and can't wait to see the walnut version 👏
A very nice piece indeed. Great craftsmanship and attention to detail. I bet that is one heavy bugger. Great Job!!
BEAUTIFUL!
Thanks for sharing!
Awesome build.
The grain match up makes it look like it was carved out of a section of tree trunk. Looks incredible.
Stunning piece; congratulations. I hope you feel proud of what you did as you deserve to. You clearly love the timber and appreciate craftsmanship. Excellent
Another beautiful piece!
The work is great. The matched grain for drawers is awesome to me. The large door is awesome 👌👏😎
Thanks! The door is my favorite part I think.
Beautiful. Great video and amazing piece!
This is awesome work!
Great build and video !!
Fantastic.
Impeccable craftsmanship 👌🏼 the continuous drawers grain is a great touch.
I love these apothecary cabinets… the more drawers, the better 😊
I would have done miter joints at the cabinet’s carcass though… but that’s just me 😉
I learned so much watching this video. Thank you. That dado jig is brilliant.
Beautiful craftsmanship!
Thanks for watching!
Such a beautiful piece~! Excellent work~!
Ooooh....I love that door
This is such an amazing piece! I absolutely love each one of these that you make. One of these days... I will build one for myself. I have a small one I made after watching you. But it's small and I definitely need more work. LOL. You do amazing work.
In photo is just gorgeous. great job.
WOW ! that is amazing, thank you
Beautiful piece and the grain orientation is top notch! Congratulations
Thank you Andrea!
Very good job , congratulations
Turned out beautiful. Nice work
Extremely cool build - I really enjoy your commentary, which is relaxed and not overly complicated for us mortals :)
Thanks Brian! I went without a written script this time and felt a little bit more comfortable with it.
Great work!
Awesome build! Thanks for using Rubio!
Thanks a lot!
7:15 yoooo I'm glad to see my idea for using registration blocks worked! Another great project John.
It was a great idea! Worked pretty well. I got lucky that the blocks fit snuggly right off the CNC, no adjustments needed.
Absolutely beautiful! Good call on the 16/4 mahogany as the grain match running along the drawers is killer. Looking forward to the walnut build!
Thanks Billy! Ya I was glad I was able to source that chunk of lumber. The dealer said they had it and it was quartersawn so it was a no brained at that point.
@@parillaworks Your router jig is brilliant. I will adapt it to be used for marking to cut the dadoes with hand tools. Thanks!
It ended up beautiful
I don't remember there being as much humor in your previous vids, but I'm loving it 😆
Beautiful build. Apothecary cabinets are my fav so I keep coming back to watch you make these beauties. Thanks for sharing your work 🖤
Thanks Elizabeth! I didn’t write out a script for this one so a little more humor comes out 🙂
That’s a great jig for cutting for your shelves.
Thanks!
Excelente proyecto muy bien desarrollado y mejor ejecutado , muchas gracias por compartir sus conocimientos y experiencias , un saludo cordial y por supuesto un gran like desde Narón , Galicia ( España)
Beautiful as always!
Thanks Nick!
Great work, mate! Thanks for sharing :D
Amazing
that continuous grain across the drawers and the door really gives it that extra touch that ties it all together, it's really cool you took the time out to plan that out
Beautiful way .. creative 👍
Looking GREAT as always, John!
Thanks Shawn!!
Absolutely stunning workmanship, but seeing that wood come to life with the finish was a real thrill too. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🇧🇸🇧🇸
I wish my planner dressed up for work like yours. Solid work
I get that free sticker from my Alma Mater because I donated $20 like 5 years ago haha.
Beautiful work, John... It looks amazing! 😃
I bet it's a hell of a long job to build one of those, but... Some day I'm going to try it as well! 😃
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Just found your channel. Beautiful work, I look forward to going through your videos.
Thanks a lot Clark!
DOPE!
CANNOT WAIT TO WATCH THIS!!!
This came out beautifully! I agree that the door is an amazing feature point. Fantastic work
Thanks Daniel!
nice
Wow that is some amazing work. You've outdone yourself on this one.
that is gorgeous... you make dowels look good :)
Absolutely love your work. would be great if you would add time you needed to finish this.
You need one of those 16" table saws.
I hit Harbor Freight for a couple of dozen 18" clamps. You can never have too many clamps and cheap helps.
That extruded aluminum square is genius! Do you have a separate video on how you made it?
🙂 thanks! Here’s a link: ruclips.net/video/WWGg11glAv8/видео.html
That is amazing.
Wow
In the future you might want to consider blind dados. They are more traditional and you don’t have to worry about blowout from the router. The shelves are easy just use the jointer to dub the front of the shelf. Otherwise very nice work.
It’s something I’ve considered. I’ve used stopped dados on smaller projects but haven’t brought them into the find for larger things like this yet. Maybe if a client requests I’ll give it a shot.
John! This is stunning! The grain match across all the drawers and that bookmatched door panel are insanely beautiful! You’ve always been one of my favorite woodworkers on RUclips and you just keep getting better and better!!
Thanks Ryder! I think I got a little lucky with what was under that rough lumber. No complaints from me though haha.
I am so DONE with RUclips right now! This stupid bell icon thing! Fixed now...but grrrr. Great build John...and a great video. I started my channel recently and I hope I can get to this level SOME day. Sorry I was late catching this video. Again, great job...as always.
Ha thanks Roland!! Ya RUclips can be finicky sometimes. Glad you found it though!

Really enjoyed this video. The level of time and detail that goes into your work is astounding.
I was just wondering if a magnet would do the same job as the brass bar that you stuck onto your rip fence? Also, when jointing the full 16 quarter piece of mahogany (13:01), you showed the back end of the timber, but it wasn’t near the jointer bed. I was just wondering, did you keep jointing until it was all the same height as that raised section of the timber? Just wondering, because it looked quite a bit off the jointer bed. Does that make sense? Thanks and keep up the great work?
Hey Chris, thanks a lot. I don’t think the fence is magnetic. But I suppose you could forgo the fence entirely and stick a mag switch to the cast iron table.
Good eye on that clip about the 16/4 board. I almost mentioned something about it but decided not to. Anyway, I did make a few more passes to address that corner of the board. I didn’t get the whole face completely smooth but it was enough to not be an issue. As you saw, I went in to resaw that board and rejoint each piece. Even without the resawing, the planer probably wouldn’t be able to manipulate that thick of a board with a small corner still rough and off the bed. If it was a 4/4 board the planer would probably not get the two sides parallel. Sorry, I kind went off on a tangent there. Does that help though?
Looks great! What drawer pulls did you use for this?
Thanks! “Item 01A5751, Old Brass Card Frame Pull” from Lee Valley.
These apothecary builds have been super helpful as I plan to make my own (for storing DVDs). I'm curious why you switched from dados to dowels for the vertical joins though!
I switched because it makes the side panels and vertical dividers the same length which is simple to manage. With the dados, I have to measure and fit them perfectly which can be a pain.
@@parillaworks That makes sense--thanks!
07:50,"this goes on for years and years". That was hilarious!
Wow. That is stunning!
Were you wanting to be "the apothecary cabinet" guy or did it just work out that way?
Thanks! I guess it just sort of happened. I really enjoy making them. I might be turning my focus to strictly this style of furniture; we’ll see.
Wait weren’t you the bandsaw box guy?! C’mon John! Share the wealth!
Beautiful works. Subscribed! Unrelated question, what horsepower motor do you have on your sawstop? Im in market, and deciding between 1.75 or 3 knowing that I want to start using more hardwoods in my projects. Any advise is appreciated!
Thanks! I have the 3hp PCS. Some extra info: I initially bought the 52” fence but just recently (5 years) bought the 36” fence separately to replace the old one. The 52” just took up too much room and I never used the capacity.
parillaworks thanks for the quick reply and advise!
Another superb build John!!
The mahogany in that thickness would cost an absolute fortune over here in the UK out of curiosity how much does a board of that length and thickness cost over there? As always buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.
Thanks Simon! Ya the 16/4 isn’t cheap but it was only ~$1 or so more per bdft. The catch is that 16/4 adds up a lot quicker than 4 or 8/4 haha. It was about $7 per bdft.
@@parillaworks oh wow I'm definitely living on the wrong side of the pond!!!
I watch all of your videos and I admire your craftsmanship. This cabinet although beautifully made doesn't work aesthetically for me. It's the door. It just doesn't look like it should be there. It's like it has been added as an afterthought.
Thanks! I suppose I can see what you’re saying. Maybe another door on the right side would tie things together. Though there were space and budget constraints in play that limited us to this design.
Try using a plastic scraper to apply Rubio next time. Works much better
Ya I’ve used one before but for some reason didn’t have one available then. More recently, I switched to a little buffer and it works really well. Saves a lot of product too.
The grain choice (especially the bookmatch on the door) came out incredible!
👏👏👏
Hey John where do you get your dowels for the Dowelmax? Oh yeah awesome build by the way👊🏼
Thanks! Lately I’ve been getting them from craftparts.com. Usually I keep 1/4” x 1”, 1/4” x 1.5”, 3/8” x 1.5”, 3/8” x 2”, and 3/8” x 3”.
@@parillaworks awesome. Thank you sir.
I’m curious how you’re addressing the wood movement for the dividers since you glued them the full length across the grain. Any tips?
The grain is all running in the same direction throughout the cabinet.
@@parillaworks that makes sense. That detail slipped my observation. 👍🏻
Parilla works is to apothecary cabinets as Alm fab is to patterned plywood. 😊
Haha that would actually be a pretty cool collab!!
I need one of these cabinets! Do you do special orders?
I’ve temporarily stopped taking orders for now. But feel free to reach out and we can discuss whatever you have in mind. parillaworks@gmail.com
@@parillaworks thank you
I see an extra leg at the back of the cabinet, but aren't you afraid of sagging on the front? I know this is like a torsion box so it should be pretty stiff but since I am planning to do something similar, I am curious!
The 5th leg is in the middle of the cabinet so it should be fine as far as sagging in the front is concerned. I didn’t show it, but I added a few stretchers in the base. The 5th leg is bridle jointed to one of them.
This is a question not a critique, why vertical grain on the door instead of matching the horizontal grain of the drawers? Was it a case of visual separation, personal preference, other? Regardless, beautiful build.
Thanks Christopher. It’s mostly a practical decision based on the size of the door. If the grain were to be horizontal, I would need a very wide panel. And with that wide panel would come more seasonal expansion and contraction. I think generally it’s good practice to run the grain in the longer dimension of a piece.

Lol I don’t disagree!

Looks like a shoe shortage cabinet for someone like Pat Perez who play on the PGA
That's an expensive a$$ shoebox. But absolutely beautiful build, man.
I come for the woodworking, but I STAY for the jokes.
I try my best 🤣
