  • This record cabinet is made of solid cherry. I started with 4/4 rough lumber and milled everything down to 3/4" thick. The areas behind the doors will store records while the middle will store keepsakes and a cable box. A tv and record player will sit atop the cabinet. The finish is Rubio Monocoat in Cherry Coral. Thanks for watching!

    Made my 50” wide album racks out of 1”x2” 14gauge steel legs and rails with 1.25” walnut shelves supported on 8 adjustable feet above the rails. Top is 2.25” walnut on similar feet. Legs and feet are sand filled to reduce “ringing”. 10 years, no middle sag. Vinyl is deceptively heavy. Just sharing, as always, YMMV

    Very good work. Two comments. First, I thought the grain pattern on the doors, when closed, was very interesting. I need to go back and look at it in detail and see if/how I would like it. Secondly, I commend you for using sap wood on the cherry. I understand that you are staining it (a shame but I accept why) but, all too often, sap wood is discarded regardless of application. It can be too soft; it can be the target for woodworm - but all these can be dealt with. Obviously, I make a feature of the sap wood on yew but also on walnut, laburnum (for handles) etc. Scrap is a big issue for woodworkers, particularly in terms of money being thrown away and I commend you for incorporating sap in the less conspicuous areas.

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  3 года назад

      Thanks! The doors are each 12” wide but I didn’t have any super wide stock for them so I had to laminate two pieces per door. There were some color differences so I had to make a choice on how to arrange them. I think they turned out nice enough especially once the stain was applied. As to sap wood, ya it can be a really nice feature if used properly. It’s hidden and stained in this project but I’ve highlighted it before in past projects. Thanks for your comment :)

      @@parillaworks on reflection, I can see some clients loving the doors - they are certainly not hiding what they are - and others just not accepting them. I must admit that when I get to over 10” wide, I go to veneered mdf or plywood , and then edge them. What I gain is good grain match plus stability plus best use of real hardwood. I lose having sold hardwood but I do believe more clients are coming around to accepting the benefits of veneer.

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  2 года назад +1

      Thank you! So far the domino has been great for case joinery, which has been the main use so far. I used 8mm dominos in this 3/4” case but in my most recent big build I used 6mm. I think I would lean towards the 6mm from now on; they seem strong enough and still give enough material on either side of the mortise/domino.

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Evan. I went back and forth on the 500 and 700 for a little while. The 700 is definitely big and heavy but ultimately I wanted the ability to build large things with it. I have the Sene a adaptor and it’s worked great so far. I haven’t used the 700 on any really small parts yet but I did buy the dock from Ramon Valdez which will probably make that a little easier to deal with. Jason brings up a lot of good points though; you do have to buy extra dominos and cutters and all that just to get up and running if you want all of the sizes. At least for now I’m happy with the 700 and don’t regret it.

    The cabinet looks great. I am curious what blades you are using in your track saw. I am happy with the stock Makita one for crosscutting, but would like a recommendation on a good rip blade.

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  3 года назад

      Thanks Nick! I agree, the stock Makita blade is pretty solid. Here's the rip blade I've been using: amzn.to/3h9fnER
      It doesn't leave me with the most amazing finish but its definitely an improvement over the crosscut blade which can burn some, especially when cutting thicker material.

  • @tbc210
    @tbc210 3 года назад

    I’m curious - when you change from a rip to a crosscut blade or vice versa on the track saw, do you ever have trouble with slight differences in blade thicknesses? I have had that problem, where two different blades are advertised as having the same kerf thickness, but in reality do not - meaning the rubber strip on the track will only line up flush with one of the blades. Thanks for your video!

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  3 года назад

      I haven’t noticed a difference in kerf as it relates to then zero clearance strip. But I know what you mean about all of these blades having varying kerfs. It can be kind of daunting to pick the right track saw blade; seems like there are even more tooth varieties than the table saw blades have.

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  3 года назад +1

      Hi Ivan. I would lean towards no but I’m not 100% sure. Normal stains are usually applied more liberally and allowed to soak in a bit, then wiped away. I guess once the excess is wiped away you could buff the surface to even things out.

      @@parillaworks if you can, it would be interesting to have a follow up in 12-18 months. I have build a few cabinets in cherry (oil finish only) and the colour changed drastically in the past year. This is the reason why I tell people to not use cherry, unless they know what they are getting into.

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  2 года назад

      I agree but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to follow up with the client; we’ll see! I have a few cherry pieces and they age nicely. I try to encourage clients to choose cherry, especially considering most clients I work with want dark wood (ie walnut) but can’t always pay for it.
