Making a Little Apothecary Wall Cabinet

  • Hi! This cabinet is made of solid quartersawn sapele that I had left from my first apothecary cabinet build almost two years ago. The dimensions are about 40" x 20" x 7". The joinery for the outer case uses dowels while the inner dividers use stopped dados. I used AutoCAD to model the drawing but usually measure off my workpiece to get the exact fit right.
    The drawers are made of maple but feature a walnut book match running vertically. The drawer hardware along with the hooks had conflicting finishes so I painted them to match. The finish on the wood is danish oil.
    The fabric was picked out from a local fabric store and is stapled to a 1/2" plywood pack panel. Behind that panel is a 1/2" French cleat which mates with another cleat on the wall.

    It looks very modern, clean and stylish. The little cubby drawers give it that expensive designer flare. Very impressive and makes me want to start one right now (but as it's 02.17 a.m. I don't think the neighbors would be too happy if I did).

    I am blown away by this one. I was worried that the fabric would distract too much from the shelves or those eye catcher drawers but seeing it filled I don't think that is an issue. While the pattern is noticable it doesn't take away at all, the blue is muted and a very nice contrast to the overall color of the piece itself.
    Perhaps if you ever do a project like this again you could use contact paper or glue on wallpaper as a backdrop, those in my mind would be a bit more durable while offering a similar variety that the fabric gives.

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  4 года назад

      Thanks Toby! The French cleat is recessed in the back of the cabinet. The rabbet in the back is 1" wide and the 1/2" back panel occupies half of that. The other half is the French cleat.

      @@parillaworks No concern about the vertical forces against the dowels? If the cabinet was on the floor, the forces would be pushing down, keeping the dowels in place, whereas here the forces look to be pulling against your dowels. I know dowels are generally considered to be stronger than screws, but I'm wondering if that holds in this environment. Do you find they hold up okay?

    Really nice piece - the fabric idea is not something I'd seen, and I like it a lot for the right space and client/spouse. Dumb question - how do you deal with glue getting on the surface - do you wipe it off wet, or deal with it after it dries - I have mixed results either way, and sanding it out of tight spaces after glue-up like that is not fun.

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  4 года назад +1

      Thanks Lawrence. In most cases I mask the surface with tape but I forgot to do that this time around. I try not to use too much glue but in the event of squeeze out I either wipe it away immediately with a chisel and wet towel or let it skin over a bit and scrape away. In areas like the drawer cubbies I don't have to be as careful because they won't be seen. You can also pre-finish your parts so that glue doesn't get absorbed as easily.

    • @LDBecker
      @LDBecker 4 года назад

      Thanks for the helpful answer! The piece is so beautiful that it didn’t occur to me that those areas wouldn’t be seen. I’m just starting to learn CNCing, and have masked off areas that I am cutting that will later need to be painted- same concept as masking before gluing. With paint, though, I have to spray with shellac before I and after I cut to keep the paint from wicking into the surrounding area. Not an issue with glue. Thanks again - really beautiful piece!

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  4 года назад

      Thanks Brad. It's usually trial and error but I typically start with the rough drawer size and work up from there. In this case I wanted the drawers in the neighborhood of 4" x 4". That size made the overall cabinet feel too small so I upped them to 4.25" x 4.25" which gave me the 9" x 9" squares I mentioned (4.25" drawer + 4.25" drawer + 1/2" divider). And finally, when I altered the material thicknesses of the case and dividers, I had to adjust the drawers to 4.3125". All that to say, it's a lot of back and forth to find a happy medium. I run into similar issues with larger apothecary cabinets when a client wants different width drawers. Hope that helps.
