His character was a good, wise man. Not just a king.
Yes but it was late, if he was smart and not manipulate but otto he will marry the daughter of rhaenys. If it's to make alliance and for power, the best marriage is with her daughter. Because there's no gain with the mariage with alicent. I never understand why he do that. For love ? I don't think he was in love with her, he likes her but not like the mother of rhaenyra. For power ? He dont need hightower, he has 10 big Dragons and the best fleet valyrion and the half of the kingdom supported him. Also otto was his hand so he has their supported. The only explain is he was very weak and can be manipulate easly. Deamon has right when he say i need to protect you from yourself. Viserys was a good King and good man but he cause all thèse tragédies by his action and his weakness. otto plan to get power by his daughter For years, but if he listen to his brother deamon, otto will never get what he want. Deamon was the only person who saw what otto is and what's his plan. That's why otto always try to reject him from the concil by execuse like he is impulsive, tyranique....

She’s a bit snarky and a little dramatic, but as someone who was once a teenage girl who knew her dad wanted a boy instead of her… I do understand Rhaenyra when she says, “the boy you always wanted.” It definitely hits close to home. I’m an only child and my dad said “if you were a boy this” and “if you were a boy that” and “if you had a brother” for as long as I can remember. And it hurts. It hurts quite a lot, feeling like you’ll never be enough. I do admire Rhaenyra for being able to stand up for herself at such a young age because as a fourteen-fifteen year old, I couldn’t. My mom had my back in that regard and I couldn’t be more grateful.
Geez, I mean I can understand a man having special bonds with a son, but once you actually have a child, to openly say you'd prefer a boy, that's horrendous. I'm sorry you had to endure such a callous dad.
Though in Rhaenyra's case I agree she's often quite obnoxious and makes way too many assumptions, and Viserys isn't even mistreating her.

To be fair, Jason is an ancient Greek name that sounds way more modern than it actually is. Compared to names like Rhaenyra and Viserys it sounds absolutely unremarkable though. I'm surprised Martin didnt spell it Jaesyn or something to give it some flair.

Viserys should’ve wed her to Daemon and made his brother The Hand after Otto was sent away. Everything would’ve been solved. It’s tradition and nobody could’ve argued with that. The kids would’ve been legitimate and Daemon would’ve protected Viserys from being drugged out of his mind.
The whole point of making Rhaenyra heir was to keep Daemon away from the iron throne.

If he had a son with Aema Arryn, then the Dance would have never happened. Also he should've named Aegon heir as soon as he was born. The fact that he did not makes him a hypocrite since he won the Great Council over Rhaenys due to him being a man and she a woman. It set a precedent that a male or a son always comes before a daughter.

See as much as I like viserys his words and actions never lined up . How can you claim she is your heir but at the same time treat her like any normal woman in the realm. Choosing her husband for her, baring her from council meetings, or war efforts. Your actions toward her told the realm that she was just a place holder whether you ment to or not

True, although marriages in Westeros are like political alliances/business contracts that are usually arranged by the parents (especially the fathers) and/or other senior members of their house. So Rhaenyra being given the opportunity to choose her husband (thanks to Alicent) was a privilege that most male heirs doesn't even get (including Rhaenyra’s sons and Aegon), but she wasted it.
He didn't treat her like a normal woman at all. He spoiled her. That's what caused the Dance.
That is not true. He literally spoiled her rotten and the reason he was choosing a husband for her was so she could have a stronger claim and even when she denied the husband either way, Viserys still supported her. Eveything he did was always for his daughter while his daughter never gave too shits about him, only daemon cared about his brother.

The New Gift was an incredibly fertile tract of land; a much needed resource in the North. Had the North rebelled, the Knights of the Vale would have not only been the closest military force to the North capable of establishing a foothold for the Crown, they would have been the most capable military force for fighting in such a harsh environment, due to the similarities in the climates of the North & the Vale
And yet everytime the vale tried to invade the north it failed which says alot about the north seeing as they are less equipped

She can be everything and anything, but she'll never have the penis that her father wants her to. She'll never be a boy. She can be queen and rule. But she will never be a boy. He literally narrows his perception of her because she lacks a certain body part. If she had a penis, he would have no argument.

Viserys dreamt that he would have a son who becomes king and is the savior, but after Aemma’s death, he thought he was wrong. Instead, he started to believe that his dream wasn't a dragon dream and that Rhaenyra was the actual savior.
This show rocked, the acting and the drama was top tier.

I loved the 1st 7 seasons on got, but this right here, hotd, the more I watch it the more and more I'm really loving it
Viserys was the most progressive king of his time. He acknowledged that even a women is capable of being a great ruler. Of course, he was at first like most kings, he wanted a son to inherit the throne. But he saw that his daughter was paying the most attention to his precedents and wise advises. I praise him for keeping his word and not replacing Rhaenyra for her son. Even though her half brother Aegon usurped the throne. People like Otto Hightower say that Aegon’s birthright was stolen but Rhaenyra was the true heir by royal decree no matter her gender. Again all praise Viserys for his honor and commitment to his kingdom and daughter.
Actually Viserys I is widely ranked as one of the worst kings of Westeros, because his indecisiveness helped start the dance.
He’s not as bad as Aegon IV, but definitely bottom tier.
He should’ve just married the velaryon. It’s horrible, but considering alicent and Otto started a war that killed countless people, anything that avoids that is better by default.
It makes it more interesting when you contextualize the civil war as being a war to decide how much legitimacy women/first-born girls would be allowed. Rhaenyra being queen would dramatically change the structure of westeros, which was something the lords couldn’t fundamentally support.
@@armando5846why couldn't rhaenyra marry a prince from dorne so she could decree that since she had adopted dornish culture and according to dornish culture women can be rulers too, she is the rightful queen. Like give the lords and the common people an example of dorne so they understand that a female ruler isn't that far fetched?

@dr.anaB799 Targaryen customs were barely excepted by their subjects, even prohibited some of them like taking more than one wife. If they pissed off majority of the realm (or even one city, hello storming of the Dragonpit) with yet another change to the common westerosi law...dragons or no dragons, Targaryens were still human and could've've been easily killed in their castle sleeping and wiped out entirely especially given the fact that until the times of the Dance there were less then 5 dragonriders

Just a little reminder that Aemma Arryn was 11 years old when she was wed to him and 13 years old when Viserys consummated their marriage in the books. He was 16 when they got married and 18 when he consummated the marriage to his 13 year old wife.
Judging by him saying he was 17 when they betrothed them in the show Aemma was most likely not 11-13 but couldn't be older than Alicent was (15-16) when Viserys consummated his marriage to her, he would be in his early 20s.
Makes him saying Aemma "made a man out of him" a bit icky. And we see a pattern of Viserys marrying and bedding young girls when he marries Alicent at a very similar age after Aemma's death.

Alicent was actually only a few years younger. They aged him (and Rhaenyra and Aemma) up and Alicent down just to make Rhaenyra and Alicent friends
@@DarkSHadowI8 I am not sure what you are referring to. Do you mean like Alicent was only a few years younger than Viserys in the books (11 years to be exact) or referring to something else? Because I know Alicent was 18 in the books when she wed 29 year-old Viserys and Rhaenyra was 9 whereas Aemma was 23 at the time of her death. Because when I was referring to Alicent being 15/16 I was talking about her in the show. Which according to my calculations the age Aemma would be around too when she consummated her own marriage with Viserys in the show.
I took his meaning to be more that Aemma helped him grow up and mature into a king, not necessarily that he was commenting on their sex life. But maybe I am being naive. 😂

You're thinking of modern times but 800 years ago people did things that we'd now consider odd as hell, you can't judge the show on modern standards because it's not based on this time.

Viserys was a horrible man and his illness reflected what he was on the inside, a rotten man. He drove his first wife into an early grave with his obsession of having a son. Then he takes away Alicents youth by marrying her when he “didn’t want to” and breeding 3 sons out of her. Then he pretends like they dont exist, which then laid the seeds for the war. The unfortunate truth that most viewers dont seem to want to accept is that he should have named Aegon his heir as soon as he was born and found a worthy consolation settlement for Rhaenyra. But he was over consumed by his guilt of killing rhaenyra’s mother that he thought making rhaenyra queen would somehow make Aemma happy in her grave🤦🏽♂️.

@@knox5282 right, he was taunting him and trying to scare him, put the fear in to him... not kill him. Intent does matter. It will still start a war regardless, but nobody will ever know or probably believe him that it was not deliberate.
Lets not forget that Aemond was bullied, relentlessly, when he was younger. Doesn't make it right, of course, to be an asshole, but it's not entirely one sided.

she shouldnt have inherited to begin with, the second viserys had a son he should have named him heir and groomed him to rule, instead you now have a bloody civil waar tht will decimate the dragons, which is the source of targaryen authority, and permanence, as well as a son who grew up neglected and pampered and is now a conceited arrogant drunk with a tendency to ignore consent. the civil war is going to kill literally everyone involved and end with her young son aegon on the throne with both parents and older siblings dead. not to mention the concurrent blackfyre rebellions that wouldnt have happened if the targs still had dragons.
All know it. Even Jason Lannister knows it

Well, during Jaehaerys I reign there was a bit of tension with the North due to Jaehaerys sending some former kingsguard to the wall and they rebelled against the watch and killed Lord Starks brother, and the Lord Stark blamed Jaehaerys for it. Perhaps Jaehaerys had suspected the chance of the North rebelling and betrothed Viserys to Aemma Arryn so that they would have the Vale army allied with them in the possibility of rebellion.

Just like Viserys, my father loved me, but he was a product of his upbringing in a patriarchal culture. I on the other hand, was raised in a Western country where free-thinking and progressivism are encouraged. We often argued due to our clashing beliefs. He held sexist beliefs about women due to being raised in a culture where women are seen and treated as less than, and that hurt me, but he thought that pushing me to conform to his culture’s norm of a traditional, conservative woman is what’s best for me, even though it’s far from it-being pushed to conform to that norm suffocated me. Luckily, he’s changed and is more accepting of me now.

Tbh, I can understand both of them here. He really does want whats best for her and to uphold the promise he made to her about being his first heir. We see that he does care about her greatly, especially in later epiaodes. But as for her and her concerns, she's also right. While he doesn't mistreat or abuse her, she isnt exactly without reason to think her father would prefer naming a boy as his next in line over her when for years now, he kept trying to have more children with his wife in the hopes of having a boy only for the last one to end up killing her mother because they chopped her open and he made the choice without talking to her or warning her about what would happen. They just strapped her down and split her open while she was wailing in fear and pain. And even in the end, he was only alive for a few hours before dying as well just like many of the other children they tried to have. Rhaenyra was their first and only surviving child and they've since had 5 other children who either died prematurely or were stillborn. Then to top it off he ends up marrying her best friend and she ends up giving him a boy, the one thing hes always wanted. So yeah, Rhaenyra had the right to worry and doubt him keepimg his word when those were the lengths her father was willing to go to in order to have a son.
I love how it talks of marrying for advantage… after marrying Alicent Hightower; say what you want, but that marriage was not advantageous except for the fact she had multiple children. Politically, it did more for the Hightowers than the actual Crown. When he married Rhaenyra’s mother, he got an army from the Vale at least

You can’t tel a dragon to not be a dragon. Raehnyra has that dog in her and she sees what has become of Alicent just pumping out children and not being able to live her life.

I don’t think so. Viserys was in love with his first wife, Aemma, Rhaenyra’s mom, so of course he loved Rhaenyra deeply.
When he married Alicent, it was because it was easier and more comfortable than a traditional, strictly political alliance, since Alicent was kind and patient with him. But because he never really stopped loving Aemma, he could never really love Alicent, and therefore was detached from their children as well. Plus, Aegon naturally inherited the crueler and more careless side of the Targaryen personality, which I’m sure was off putting to Viserys, if he allowed himself to acknowledge it at all.
