Wouldn't have been so easy at that time, since Daemon was still married to Rhea Royce. Although, that marriage was never consummated, so Viserys could have had a word with the High Septon, got Daemon's marriage annulled, then wed Rhaenyra to Daemon, to unify their claims and bring both to heel by giving them a reason to obey him, by giving them what they want on his terms.
@@willhyde5026 considering Daemon kills his own wife to be with rhaenyra I'm guessing he would be willing to make Viserys have an "accident" once he's married to the heir. Viserys knows his brother despite some level of naivety and that's why his main strategy is to keep him far away.

I don't think marrying Alicent was the problem. Whoever he married, any son born to them would be contenders. The problem is, Viserys never truly trained Rhaenyra to rule and extend her own influence. Worse, he never publicly heralded her as the rightful heir after Aegon was born. He was too sick and too optimistic to realize that half of Westeros won't just bow down to a woman as their ruler.

If you've never had half or step siblings you wouldn't understand. She is being replaced and swept aside. She is very aware of it and considering her mother just died she is very angry at her father for doing this even if necessary.

If it really was about strengthening their position and if he really just wanted her happy and as heir he'd have married Laena.
But like everyone else, he gave into the notion that women come after the men. His own discomfort with the age difference mattered, hers does not. He can chose his partner based on his likings, she cannot.
On one hand he wants her to feel like she has a choice as long as she makes a good choice, but at the same time he refuses to be an example.
Marrying Alicent was his 2nd mistake. Ordering his son delivered and his wife killed was his first and biggest.
If King Viserys married Laena, than the Dance of Dragons would’ve still probably happened. If Laena had a son, you know Corlys would want his grandson to become king instead of Rhaenyra, even though Viserys named her heir beforehand. The only difference would be that the Hightowers might support Rhaenyra’s claim and be on her side, with Alicent as one of her ladies-in-waiting and the Velaryons would’ve played a part in the war. The two houses’s roles would be switched.

Laenor may have been infertile, so he probably wasn’t able to have kids with Rhaenyra gay or not.

Laena would have Vhagar, Laenor would have Seasmoke, Laena's kids with Viserys would have dragons of their own, Rhaenys would have Meleys against Rhaenyra who had Syrax and Daemon who had Caraxes and some little dragons that their kids might have. Corlys would 100% push for his grandson to be king.

If only one of them stopped being so freaking selfish and thought about the state of royal family, they would not be in this shoe. Viserys should have wed the kid, and Rhaenyra should kept her mouth shut and wed a powerful ally be content with it. There is no chance in HELL that they will be happy with a queen.
I’d argue Laenor was one of the most powerful allies Rhaenyra could have married. Better option than any of the nobody Lords we saw at her betrothal tour.

Technically speaking, she should have been given to Daemon to shore up both claims to the throne. And Vsierys should have given her actual lessons on ruling instead of making her a laughingstock in front of men who'd one day be expected to advise and serve her competently.

Just because he was cruel to his children, he hadn't raised them as such and expected more than their upbringing could provide.
Viserys I was a king. If he just hadn't paid so much attention to Rhaenyra's caprices or if he never named Otto as his hand again, things would be different. After Strong's death he should've named his brother as his Hand.
@@Stellarionas I'd argue that the way Tywin raised his children was the key to his undoing. He was blind to Cersei & Jaime's incest and the 3 bastards it produced that he ended up having to fight a massive war because of it (which in turn left House Lannister financially dependent on the Iron Bank & the Tyrells), him ignoring Cersei when she said she didn't want to marry Loras resulted in her souring the relationship w the Tyrells and led to Cersei running to the High Sparrow to solve her problems, and the way he neglected & treated Tyrion probably made it a lot easier for Tyrion to kill him when the time came.
I'm just saying Tywin didn't necessarily have a whole lot of room to talk.
Which, of course, is total BS. Rhynaera won when her line ended up as the remaining kings. Alliecent’s line died out.
A lot of Tywin's action turned two out of his three children into dangerous monsters and did a lot more harm that good for the Lannisters in the long-run.

Great scene. I cant decide if Alicent is fool enough to "Not Remember" Rhaenyra was just in there earlier taking to Viserys and he's heavily drugged Or, if Alicent thinks everybody is cowardly enough to forget and forgive what the King told Everybody (Rhaenyra will replace me).

She fucked upped. Had she strived to get along with literally the only person who wanted her to be queen and played her part right, the dance of the dragons could have been averted or at least minimized. Vyseris is right if she was to be queen, she should have understood that the position comes with resposabilities she can’t just mope herself away from. Vyseris was foolish, and Rhaenyra wasn’t too far back in that regard.

"The war started because Otto planted.." No. The war started beacuse the Targaryens forget where they came from and how they conquered the land. Daemon did partly. Jaerhys understood this well and didn't hand out dragons left to right. If Viserys was serious about making Raeynerya heir he must craft the alliance with those he can trust and also scare the shit out of the rest with their dragons. WIth this "dragon only" rule it would have been MUCH easier to prusade Rahyenra to marry, with his brother and multiply, and only their true born, limited to only two heirs would in turn ride dragons. This entire idea of making deals with the Andal-houses and share their power with them set the doom for the Targaryens, in that way Viserys was to weak, blinded and to influenced by the westroisi traditions. he should never have let his other born children ride dragons. Its the source to their power. And he handed out WMDs left and right. That is not what a good ruler does in that situation if you truly care about the people in Westeros. The Targaryen fuck ups did more damage to the people than the white walkers ever did. Lol. Only needed one Arya for that. The dragon rule should always had been that one of 3 dragons along as the faith and the Andal houses was allowed to remain in power. If they wanted more Targaryens in power on dragons? They need to replace the mighty houses in wetstros to do so. In that way they could have created a new Valyria over time. But the idea was not to create a new Valyria but to stop the white walkers. The rule of 3 dragons is the most logic path to take here in means of keeping the peace and power balance.

Jaeherys did hand out dragons 'left and right'. partly because its not in the power fo the king to control each of his house's members. The 'Queen who never was' wedded into the velaryons while retaining her dragon DURING Jaeherys's reign. Hell, almost all of his own children that reached adulthood had their own dragons and in no way did he regulate who gets which.
The only time that he did show this facet was when dragon eggs were stolen and there was a probability of them falling into the hands of non-targaryen bloodlines. And laenor naturally got a dragon through his mother as well.
Viserys can be shitted upon for a number of things but this is too much. Hell, if he had actually tried to do what you suggest, them it would kickstart a dance of dragons on a much higher scale except this time it would be the King and his heir against literally everyone else who stands to lose their power over their dragons.
Notice Viserys swears by Aemma's memory that Rhaenera won't be supplanted, but then Rheanera swears to Alicent on her mother's memory (in front of a weirwood specifically) that she's still a maiden when that's a lie. Later, Alicent helps ultimately supplant Rhaenera. By some interpretations, Aegon supplanting Rhaenera could be considered karma since Rhaenera betrayed Aemma's memory in front of the Heart Tree.
Rhaenyra lied by omission, she was careful about saying not she was a maiden. Just that nothing happened between her and Daemon.

Marrying Laena Velaryon wouldve been a mistake. Politically it is sound but biologically? Not even. She'll just suffer the same fate as Aemma did a lot of stillborns and hard pregnancies. Aemma had the same problem she had been too young when she married Viserys. She was 11 iirc and looked what happened to her. Laena was only a year older than Aemma when theyre forcing Viserys to marry her.
Another way dragon riders could go extinct is BY marrying too many outsiders. Dragon rider blood gets too diluted and the dragons wouldn't accept them anymore.

The Green's claim would only be "he's a boy she's a girl" if it weren't for Viserys' lack of balls and Rhaenyra's selfishness. From Aegon's POV his older sister and the heir apparent is a mega hater on him for no real reason , which is why it's so easy for Allicent to manipulate him.
I don't think Rhaenyra deserves to be queen. She thinks she's above everyone and everything, that she doesn't have to adhere to the same rules that apply to everyone else including her father. Her father was pushed to marry for the good of the realm even though he was still grieving. Alicent didn't romantically like him and he did not romantically like her either. But they both did what duty calls for. If you can't do that, you won't make a good leader and you won't have many allies. It's not all about me, me, me.
You're bogus. What you're seeing here is the vestiges of a girl who lost her mother too young and clearly is still feeling the loss heavily. "I had a family"--she was referring to how he murdered Aemma here. She's not ready for romance at this point, and why is that something to be held against her? Ah. Because poor little Alicent wasn't, either. Neither case was right; however, at least Alicent wasn't tied to a gay man who EVERYONE knew would never sleep with her, while expecting her to manage immaculate conception. Rhaenyra got that deal with laenor; a good man, a good friend but TERRIBLE husband. There's no way he'd ever be attracted to her in order to sleep with her, even if she'd had the guts to try what Margaery suggested with Renly in GoT. And she didn't. (And that's ok, too.)
I don't necessarily believe Rhaenyra was thinking me, me, me. I think she was thinking of the preservation of house Targaryen. However, it's still in a way self centered. In my opinion all of the remaining Valyrians from the time of the Doom were to focused on the preservation of thier own houses, when they should have been focused on the preservation of Valyrian culture. Ancient tomes, Valyrian ship (the greatest fleets that the got and hotd world had ever known) building methods, and Smelting Valyrian steel were all essentially lost from 95% of the world because Valyrians could not get it together enough to realize they needed to be working together and marrying within the culture
