The only way I could see her being pushed to that point is if she came to find that no matter how strong/fair/just of a ruler she tries to be, there's no way she could ever unite the 7 kingdoms and have the love/support of the people of Westeros. She'd gradually become more cold and harsh to try maintain harmony (control) by force, executing those who were not loyal to her, only creating more enemies for herself in doing so. Eventually she might come to the conclusion that there would always be conflict...as she once said before, "maybe they didn't want to be conquered." There will never be peace and order in Westeros, perpetual power struggles and conflicts, she could not break the wheel and be merciful, she could not liberate them from themselves. THEN she snaps and goes full "burn them all," to wipe the slate clean and rebuild from the ashes a single kingdom and empire establishing a new order of justice and peace under her regime. She was clever and strategic prior to season 7, and her whole MO was that she was ruthless but cared for the innocent and wanted to be a fair and just ruler i.e. "I will answer injustice with justice." Extremely poorly executed and rushed for shock value, plus the showrunners just wanted to move on to Star Wars (which was never a done deal) because they were greedy, and then they disgraced themselves and didn't get that deal.
GRRM wanted the show to run for 12 or more seasons, if the madness thing was his plan for Daenerys, it would have been more believable if she conquered Kings Landing and Westeros but her enemies constantly conspired to remove her from the Iron Throne and attempted to assassinate her...but even then it's not in her character to resort to mass slaughter.
But that is not what we got, so for all intents and purposes, we never got the true conclusion to her character, and I don't accept that "she was just another crazy chick."

Emilia is one of best actresses in this era!!!
I love how she looks down to read her lines in that last bit. Watch how her eyes drop and then go back and forth as she says “and I’ll put it to good use”
