That made me so unsure of the afterflesh. I wish ppl would stop calling "ghosts" (dislike that word) dead. Clearly if they're wandering to and fro, hanging around, anything but dead. I love you all.
The dragon has a caring heart. It didn’t want to burn her at all. The dragon took its time.

She died a dragon rider's death, just as she wanted. She spoke of it at least once before. She went out on her own terms.

@@very_well12 She is a Targaryen (or at least of Valyrian descent). Her name is Lady Leana and she is pregnant in this scene however there are delivery complications. The baby is in breech (meaning instead of coming out headfirst, it would be coming out feet first) and in this medieval setting they have no way of delivering the child safely without risking both the mother and child's lives. Instead, Lady Leana decides to go out on her own terms and goes to her dragon, Vhagar, and die a dragonrider's death as seen here. She is pleading with her dragon to burn her.

House Targaryen fleed Old Valyria years after Velaryon and Celtigar, &when Aegon the Conqueror United the 7 realms(even though Dorne was never fully brought into the fold), House Velaryon had retained their mastery at sea that earned them the small nobility they had in Old Valyria, which helped them amass the wealth they had when Lord Corlys returned from YiTi. They had been the Master of Ships since King Aegon I, &Lord Corlys would be wed to Princess Rhaenys. They had two children, Laena&Laenor, who would become dragon riders thanks to having Princess Rhaenys blood of the Old Valyrian Dragonlords. In turn, Daemon Targaryen would be wed to Laena having two daughters before dying due to childbirth complications(as seen here). Laenor was wed to Princess Rhaenyra, but due to him being more fond of the household knights over women, it was rumored the three sons they had were bastards of Ser Harwin Breakbones Strong. Nonetheless, they still had the blood of the Dragonlords, so they would become dragon riders as well.
I really like how they showed how hesitant Vhagar was here. She didn't want to kill her rider, most likely because there was a greater bond than with Aemond. Also, poor Vhagar deserves to retire, let the War-Veteran rest.
Unfortunately she has one more really bad battle to do …. Probably come up next season

That got me. The Dragons love the riders they bond with. He didn't want to destroy her. She had to convey forgiveness and that she trusted him to do this thing, that death in his flames was the only thing to stop her suffering.

There’s a part of me that really thinks Vhagar waiting until they locked eyes to know what to do. Waiting for her rider to look at her to really know it was ok was really heartbreaking.
Literally the slow blinks hurt my heart😢 cuz it reminds me of a cat saying "I love you" haha and it HURTED seeing Vhagar doing it

He didn’t do it. Not until he understood just how much pain she was in at which point what he would do with the fire and flames was a mercy compared to what she was already dealing with. I totally respect this dragon and admire it even more for this.

Vhagar is a female dragon.
Vhagar had gone through so much in her long life, she had to live with the fact that her siblings Balerion and Meraxes died years ago and she was still here. That probably made Vhagar care for her riders more then any other dragon. The way she sounded was so heartbreaking, Vhagar didn't wanna kill her, but she could tell her rider wanted to go out at least by the hands of a close friend

I think Vhagar obeyed only when she understood that her rider had no chances to survive. She was very old and wise.

For context 2 people who are just scrolling and don't watch the show that is Lady Leana she is currently pregnant and the child is in breach or she's not fully dilated enough for the child to come out on its own her "doctors" maesters ask her husband Daemond to make the decision save the babe or loose them both. The only way to do this is by cutting her belly open back then because they didn't know about Precision it would have ripped major blood vessels and she would have died he refused the Maesters however upon hearing this Leana decided to take her own life and put her unborn babe to rest by asking her dragon Vhagar to burn them alive.... and yes Deamond loved her very much.
(P.s. Please STOP hating on a fictional character! SHE AND THE BABY BOTH DIE IN THE BOOK! You want to blame someone BLAME the writers. This didn't happen in the book in the book the baby and the mother die in childbirth! The directors changed the show to make their deaths more DRAMATIC!)

The way Laena yelled a cheerful dracarys the last time she mounted Vhagar while atop the clouds... versus her screaming it in pain while on land.
Given that Vhaegar was the last surviving dragon after the conquest and having losing her siblings and her rider this was the last symbiotic relationship she had with someone of Valyrian Descent. So she contemplated it but she only did it in the end because she saw her in pain and was tired. Her with Aemond is just basically she’s done with a lot of shit
I never thought of it that way which makes it even more heartbreaking. The actress is impressive tho because she was literally yelling at a blank screen for this scene, props to her.
Sounds cute but no. Vhagar was ridden by others after Visenya and is now ridden by Aemond, of Valyrian descent as well.

I’ll point out that despite Aemond being a spiteful cruel young man, he was in a position of vulnerability and hopelessness that he’d never be a dragon rider, until he met Vhaegar who had just lost her dragon rider and likely felt similarly lost and hopeless.
I think he has a great bond with her but dragons cannot be controlled and they’ll kill their own kind in a moment

A bond between rider and beast... the amount of emotion put into this scene... breaks my heart. You can literally FEEL the emotion between her and her familiar. Some reason I feel like the dragon knew what was wrong. But was hesitant. Because of this mercy the dragon gets locked up.... I find that part so fucked up!!!
She was by far the best woman in the whole show, the greatest attribute of a woman is unparalleled beauty matched with PEACE 🕊️

Old Vhagar was the last of the three great dragons who helped conquer Westeros. She was the oldest dragon and easily the largest living dragon at this point. The old girl wasn’t as quick as she once was, but she hadn’t lost any of her ferocity.

Vhagar's heart was so broken by this. She wasn't the same after... especially after Aemon mounted her and she ate Luc. Aemon had no control over her, Whereas Leana was truly bonded to her. She never once used Vhagar for anything but pure joy and riding, never fought her..

As sad as it was for her, and as much as I wished we saw more of Laena, I liked this scene. It showcased the intelligence of those dragons and the bond between dragon and rider. She didn't want to, but understood her rider's pain and desperation.

Murder is a legal term and does not describe what occurred in this scene. The dragon killed her, but there was no murder.

This is one of the best moments I would never forget. Vhagar was confused and hesitant at first but realized her rider was in pain and had to handle business.

I like to think Vhagar could also sense Laena was pregnant. It makes me think she was hesitant not only about her.
The dragons are very connected to their riders. It's why Drogon was able to show up when Dany was in danger and rescue her. Or when Syrax was roaring when Rhaenyra was in labor. Vhager knew she was pregnant and likely dying.

The sad cries that this old girl made before doing what her rider wanted. She felt her pain and despair. I think that this really broke her, killing her own rider
Omg! Just reading this after the other comments has my heart hurting and silent tears running. Sometimes I wonder wth is wrong with me and others I accept that it's just me. The look in those eyes, broke me. 😢
Side note: They need a quick lesson in manually turning a breech baby. It can be done, somewhat painful at times, but it will save both if done in time. Definitely better than this option, that obviously had detrimental effects on her dragon. (From what I gather from the comments.)

I don't really remember where i saw that but i believe that the dragons also feel their riders pain. So for vhagar it wasn't just killing her rider but also essentially burning herself to death. Just without her dying

Normally it's a stronger emotional bond if the egg hates with the rider when the rider is a baby but even riders woth already hatched dragons bond very well too. It's more that he was killing his love. Not in a relationship way but they shared love so he was having to kill his love

The whole cat animal slow blink to show respect is a subtle amazing depection of Vhagar.
Just imagine the person you love more then love it self asks you to take their life cause of something like this . That how I imagined it so I could see how the dragon felt .

Vhagar was and is one of the eldest dragons to still live in the family and out all her riders if any, this was the most bonded relationship between her and her rider very loyal till the wheels fall off

Vaghar is also a mother to many and also a grandmother to many more....she also feels laena's emotional n physical pain ... that's why she was hesitant at first ...poor grandmama

This scene absolutely broke my heart, because yes daemon was a bit set back in his ways, but to see the person he loves so dearly burn themselves to death is absolutely horrible

I think he seemed a little unbothered only because he knew she died the way she wanted. Some people complained he seemed happy - like yeah she went out on HER terms
Vhagar's sad cry when she asked for the first Dracarys had me crying. You can tell Vhagar did not want to lose another rider. Shes already lost two. Visenya and Baelon. So losing Laena this way would make her hate herself a bit.

Man, when I originally watched the show, the idiot directors made it way too dark and I could hardly see Vhagar at all. This is the clearest I've ever seen this shot and it makes it SO much better. Dear Directors, you don't actually have to make it pitch black to make people believe it's nighttime.

I will never understand why these idiots spend millions of dollars on visuals for a film and then make it so dark that you can't see what is happening. They also think it's great to do fighting scenes in the rain. It's hell for the actors and the costumes, makeup and the rest of the set. Spend extra money on it to ruin the movie. It's a loser of a film when that happens.
It really wasn’t that dark. Maybe just correct the brightness and contrast in your tv

He didn’t want to keep kept looking at her like I can’t hurt you I can’t then he realized how much pain she was in and finally did it you know this broke his heart.
like a loyal pet confused you could see she’s an old girl, but she’s had a few writers over many decades. She really did not want to do this. She realize the pain she was in stupid didn’t even give that poor dragon timeto recover from burning her Rider come on if she felt this bad must’ve had an effect big jerk.
Vhagar was like "I beg your pardon?" "Lets talk about this"... "Hold up... It aint that serious fam!"
Poor Vhagar. Too many lifetimes, too much loss. Her rider, the baby she couldn't deliver. If Vhagar hadn't obeyed Laena when she did, Daemon would have intervened. The dragon really waited until there was no other choice. 🐲
I have not watched this show because it is taking GRRM away from finishing his books and that makes me mad. But why would Daemon have stopped her? It looks like a miscarriage and she is not that far along.. she may have been I don’t know. Very sad for all involved.

She had started labor but wasn't progressing. The "Doctor" said the only way to salvage this pregnancy at all would be to cut her open and take the baby. Otherwise both of them would just die instead of just one.
This had been done before so the women were aware of this royal practice. The way they showed it was...well, barbaric. Yeah, I'm not sure why they couldn't be as advanced as the Romans in medicine...but I haven't read the books.

She was having a miscarriage. It didn't matter, the fetus didn't have a heartbeat. The dragon understood her pain
@@tabora_ She wasn't having a miscarriage. She had complications during her childbirth. Daemon was given the suggestion that they do a C-section but he didn't make the choice (at least that we saw).

@@BrendaBoo111the blood is from hemorrhaging, most likely.,if they didn’t get the baby out,and she’s bleeding freely like that, she would have bled out anyways,and the baby would have died regardless..but I’d think if there was a chance for the baby, to come out alive- she would have had the baby first, before she asked for death..
@@tabora_ the fetus is in transverse breech, and they didn't know about turning it, so her options were to die from a C-section like the last mother had, or do this.
As sad as this scene was, I love how much it showcased the bonds they have with their riders! They’re not just mindless beasts, they have emotion as well. I think it’s also cool to show how “big and bad” Vhagar had a bit of a soft side, if you will, for her rider. Honestly, after this scene, I think it would have been impossible for her to have bonded with Laena’s daughter, which is why Aemond was the obvious choice. Although I wouldn’t call theirs a bond as much as a tolerance 😂

I need to rewatch the whole series because I was so lost for at least the first 4 episodes. There were so many unfamiliar names being thrown that I couldn’t keep track of who was who; I know I missed a lot of the important back story.

I think it’s interesting that she was able to get Vhaegar to smoke her, meanwhile Aemond couldn’t stop Vhaegar from chomping Lucerys. I think it shows that the bond between rider and dragon is complicated. I think dragons can almost sense the intent of their rider, and I think a part of why Vhaegar acted the way she did was because she knew Laena meant it, while Aemond didn’t even if Aemond didn’t know it himself. I also think a different dragon might have behaved differently in both circumstances.

I will never get over how well done Vhagars expressions are in this scene. She didn't want to do it but she knew it was a mercy kill
I love that in GoT the way Dani says "dracarys" is different to how its pronounced in HotD. It shows whats been lost or altered with time and the d3@ths that fell on the houses name.
The flesh ripped wound on her upper jaw is an amazing detail though💕

The pain in Vhagar's eyes 😢 she truly didn't want to do this to the one that she was so attached and bonded to but felt her Rider's pain and suffering and when they made eye contact you see that shes telling her dragon its ok im not blaming you , I love you please help me be free😢 let ot be you. And vhagar honored her wishes even though it broke her heart to do so. This scene was beautifully done.
