It had some good moments but Apollo's death was overshadowed by the fight and it just felt disjointed to me. Even Stallone has expressed how disappointed he was with how "Rocky V" turned out. But there are a lot of redeeming qualities in the movie, namely returning Rocky to his more dramatic roots, and having more character depth to the story. If we're keeping 100, in terms of pure storytelling, acting, character development, etc, "Rocky IV" might actually be the worst lol. But given when it came out, and how it took advantage of the Cold War era, and how unabashedly over-the-top it is, it's easy to see why "Rocky IV" was the most profitable and arguably the most popular entry in the series. It's a fucking miracle that arguably the dumbest of the "Rocky" movies provided dramatic weight for the eventual "Creed" spin-off's which are more in line tonally with the first "Rocky" movie.

That's always been the joke about how his son aged several years between the two movies. Sly addressed this simply by saying that he wanted his son in the movie with him. It was a chance for them to be together on something very meaningful. That was a theme in the movie when Rocky went off with Tommy which paralleled real life when Sly would be away from home for months at a time filming movies, leaving his family behind.

Rocky V gets an unfair rap because it is the fifth movie in a series of masterpieces.
One thing that is not mentioned is how great it was to see Sylvester Stallone elevate non-actors into Hollywood stars. He did it with Mr. T (Clubber Lang in Rocky III) - who had been a 'Tough Guy' amateur fighter before his debut, and the late Tommy Morrison, a real-life up-and-coming heavyweight boxer whose first acting role was as Tommy Gunn in this movie. Stallone had a real eye for talent.

Sage Stallone was a treasured friend of mine. He always liked to take the p*** out of his performance in this film, and for that matter, his family; he was very proud and protective of his father's legacy but was also critical about some of his life and career choices, like a lot of adult children of movie stars. Sage was a rabid lover of exploitation films, so much so that he started a company with his close friend Bob Murawski, the longtime editor for director Sam Raimi, called Grindhouse Releasing, which did theatrical revivals and home video releases of wild films like CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, PIECES, and THE BEYOND. They're still in business today, and I've been lucky to work on some of their releases. Sage also directed a 30 minute short film, VIC, a very touching drama about a long out of work actor getting one last chance at a big part. If you google Sage's name and the title, you will likely find a source where you can watch it.
Once, during the heyday of MySpace, a rando dude DM'd me the equivalent of a drunken pickup line, typing, "OMG U R SO HOTTT, U LOOK LIKE SLY STALLONE!!" Naturally, I forwarded Sage the message. He replied back to me, "NO! TELL HIM IT'S A WIG! TELL HIM YOU'RE BALD, *BALD*, LIKE YUL BRYNNER IN THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR! YEAH, WHATEVER...TALK TO YOU LATER, *DAD*!" Ten years he's been gone and I miss him terribly still.

As bad and stupid Paulie is with the financial situation they end up in, I do think his character redeems himself with how he helps Robert with his bully situation. It's not done in words but in the montages he's there for him when his father is not. Helping him train, picking up the slack. I wish they had done even more with this relationship.

    • @sorinturle4599

I don't even understand the hate and blame put on Paulie. It wasn't really his fault. He is a simple man, ignorant about business and attorneys stuff. He trusted the man knowing that Balboa family trusts him. They hired that attorney a bunch of years ago and they never check the fact that the taxes weren't payd for years.

The family & their connection is worth more than than money at the end of the day.

He then turned pro under the name Burt ‘Paulie’ Young and went 17-0 under the legendary boxing trainer Cus D’Amato who also trained ''Iron'' Mike Tyson, Floyd Patterson, and Jose Torres.

All the boxers in the Rocky movies are allegories of real-life boxers from the era. Rocky himself is Joe Frasier (although also inspired by Chuck Wepner), Apollo Creed is Muhammad Ali, Clubber Lang is George Foreman and Tommy Gunn is Mike Tyson. Ivan Drago isn't any single person, but he does represent Russian and other Eastern European boxers who rose to prominence following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Rocky V is a good movie, but it's often derided because it just doesn't quite rise to the quality of it's predecessors. That doesn't make it a bad movie, though.

Rocky has been special to me my whole life in film and seeing you connect with him and his family in the way you have has been unmissable.
Make sure before you move to Apollo Creed that you finish this series, as "Rocky Balboa" released in 2006 is the last part of his story, it doesn't move from V to Creed. You will hate yourself if you find out how important that film is after missing it.

Your reaction videos are always so authentic. I think Rocky5 is pretty good as a single movie, but it's just not good as a franchise. I believe it is due to 2 reasons. 1. Why are they losing all the money because Paulie signs a power of attorney? That doesn't make any sense to me. Why Paulie? 2. Rocky is just coming back from a big fight (so not a forgotten sports star) and shouldn't have any other opportunities like advertising or anything like that to make money other than fighting. That doesn't seem like a good story to me.
