Before the Naked Gun movies and Airplane, Leslie Nielsen was known as a very serious actor. Also, the player who attempted to kill the queen was Reggie Jackson, considered to be one of professional baseball's all time greats.
Reggie Jackson originally played for the Yankees but was cut by them and ended up with the Anaheim Angels. Despite early World Series success he never would appear in another again.
@@trhansen3244Actually, Reggie originally played for the Oakland A's (although he actually came up in 1967 when the Athletics were in Kansas City), and won three straight titles with them from 1972-74 before going to the Yankees.

I could swear you'd seen Airplane!. Guess that needs to be on your list now. Also, this is based on a very short-lived TV series called Police Squad. It's worth a watch as well.
They recycle some of the Police Squad jokes with the Naked Gun films. So I recommend some time after before checking them out, so the jokes aren't as stale.
@@karkajouautomaton4882 The same can be said about Mel Brooks' "Robin Hood: Men in Tights". Years earlier, he worked on a short-lived tv show, "When Things Were Rotten", and it also followed Robin Hood and his gang, and had some of the same jokes.
19:17 These are real people. Dick Vitale is probably the most famous college basketball announcer, and is pretty much like a mascot for that sport. Dick Enberg was a sportscaster who covered many different sports for NBC, CBS and ESPN. Dr Joyce Brother was a famous psychologist and media personality who gave advice to millions over the airwaves. She was in no way a sportscaster, which is part of the joke here.
OJ starred in all three Naked Gun movies. The last of the three movies was released in early 1994, only a few months before his turn from fame to infamy. The late Leslie Nielsen was one of the greatest comedic actors of all time. People still use images of him from Airplane! in memes, more than 40 years after that movie was released.
In an interview about his career revival as a "deadpan comedic" actor he once said something along the lines of, "I've been delivering very silly dialogue with a straight face for decades. The only difference now is that it's very silly _on purpose."_
Fun Fact: Queen Elizabeth II and Reggie Jackson (the baseball player at 21:10) actually met in real life. In 1991, as part of the her visit to the U.S., the Queen attended a game between the Baltimore Orioles and the Oakland Athletics. Before the game, all of the players shook hands with the Queen in the Dugout, including Reggie Jackson, who was playing for Oakland at the time.
"Oh, my poor Nordberg! He was such a good man, Frank. He never wanted to hurt anyone. Who would do such a thing?" I love, in retrospect, how poorly that line aged.
Police Squad was the name of a tv series starring Leslie Neilsen, and several of the same characters as well played by different actors. It was just as funny, but it was cancelled after only 6 episodes. And it's very funny.
The kookaburra is actually used as a stock sound effect in Hollywood for jungle settings, especially films set in Africa. A lot of people likely think the call comes from a monkey instead of a bird, making it a very popular sound effect. It’s been used so often for jungle settings that many people now associate the kookaburra call with Africa instead of Australia. Similarly, if you ever hear a bald eagle screech in movies, it’s likely the call of the red-tailed hawk instead of the bald eagle’s softer chirp.
Hey Mary, if you enjoyed the film then you may like the tv series "Police Squad" it was unfairly cancelled after 6 episodes. Which is why the film "The Naked Gun" was made. So funny!
Leslie Nielsen was definitely one of kind from Airplane 1 and 2 to all the Naked Gun movies and a couple more a true comedian at it's finest 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂. Awesome reaction Mary ❤

Leslie Nielsen was only 19 years older than Priscilla Presley, so he may have just been old enough to be her father, but definitely not her grandfather.
It’s so crazy watching movies from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s talk about “The Queen”, because it’s been the same one for so long. Yet, she is no longer with us. 😢

For a joke David zucker bought a race horse and name it “all pink”. He told the jockey to just run the horse along rail so the announcer calling the race would say “…and it’s all pink on the inside”. It took him three tries with three different horses until finally the third horse “awl pink” got the announcer to say it. It ended up being a $60,000 joke.

Actually, Australia has maintained a pretty good presence in international baseball in both the Olympics and the World Baseball Classic, and there have been some Aussies who have played in Major League Baseball. And this is my favorite movie in the Naked Gun series, but all three are hilarious and totally worth watching.
Mary, to get perspective of Leslie Nielsen's early start, I'd recommend the very serious Sci-Fi movie (made for movies, not a TV show) called Forbidden Planet. It has a storyline and creative arc that holds up very well even today, and though the movie was made in 1956, they used state of the art special effects for its time. In other words, not cheesy. Then fast forward to today and the humor you see in him will be better understood. :)
The Police Squad referred to in the title was a TV series that only lasted 6 episodes. The series also starred Leslie Neilsen. The movie actually repeats a number of jokes from the series.
One of my favorite parts: In Frank's romantic speech at the end he quotes the famous line from Casablanca -- "the problems of two people don't amount to a hill of beans in this world" -- but then he makes this hilarious addition, "but this is our hill and these are our beans!"😂😂😂
Leslie Nielsen was 19 years older than Priscilla Presley, (she was 43 years old when this movie came out). So there's _some_ age difference between them, but not by a huge amount. Presley was remarkably beautiful, even in her 40s, and Leslie Nielsen always looked ten years older than he actually was, but they did share a good on screen chemistry and she helped to balance the movie so casting her was a great decision.
@@moondog3056 I think slapstick even if at it’s most passive and surreal (the opening credits with the cop car going through the living room, a woman’s locker room) is kinda lost in “fail” video land
It should be remembered, that long before OJ got his reputation, because of the trial, he was a fairly well liked American football player. Priscilla Presley was an actress for the show Dallas. In fact, she was in the infamous season, where the entire season's timeline was erased because it was just a dream.
OJ wasn't fairly well liked. He was loved. He was so loved that he was originally supposed to be the Terminator in the original movie but the idea was dropped because no one would ever believe that he could be a murder.
I don’t understand why you keep asking questions about why something doesn’t make sense, or it’s not realistic for Frank to do something. It’s a comedy’ it’s not supposed to make sense. He flips and jumps and makes himself look silly for, laughs, not because it’s standard police protocol.
Leslie Nielsen played in serious roles for more than 25 years until he appeared as a supporting character in Airplane that got him remarked for his comedic skills. This movie (that came out in 1988) propelled him to the stratosphere of comedy legends. And while from the Naked Gun on, he played mostly in spoof movies (some better, some barely funny) in every single one of them he was by far, the best thing in them. RIP legend.
A couple things to know: The driving instructor is none other than the legendary actor John Houseman who won an Oscar for being a teacher in the movie The Paper Chase (1973); Enrico Palazzo is a world-renowned opera singer and having him here shows what a great sport he is; Reggie Jackson (the assassin in the baseball game) is a Hall of Fame player. Vincent Ludwig's secretary is the mother of the Zucker Brothers. She often has a small part in all of their movies. She is the same woman who has trouble putting on her makeup in Airplane! and you can see her in other Zucker Brothers movies.
Priscilla Presley separated from Elvis in February 1972 and they divorced in October of 1973. She has been the EX wife for 50 years this year. If it weren't for her continuing to ride her dead EX-husband's coattails, using his name, nobody would know her today.
one of the best comedies ever. the slap stick and quick hits are constant. Totally random and silly things always going on. You almost need to watch it twice to catch them all. If you havent watched " airplane" and "airplane 2" with Lesley , its a must. But the quick silly jokes are constant to where you are constantly laughing.
Fun Fact: The villain in this film was the original Khan in Star Trek - the character Benedict Cumberbatch played in Star Trek 2 (2013). His name is Ricardo Montalban, and he had a long, successful acting career on stage, screen and television. He originated the role of Khan Noonien Singh in the 1967 episode'Space Seed,' in the Original Star Trek tv series and reprised the role in the second Original Star Trek film, The Wrath of Khan. Montalan - a Mexican- American actor, has also made films in Mexico.
Leslie Nielsen used to be a dramatic actor but found comedy playing a role in "Airplane". Since, he pretty much stuck to comedy. He LOVED the genre. So much so, he used to carry around a 'fart box' (turn it over and it makes a fart sound, little bigger than a match box). He loved getting reactions from people with comedy. He was/is a true Canadian house hold name. He served with the RCAF from '43-45. In '88 he received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, 2001 inducted in the Canadian Walk of Fame and in 2002 he became an Officer of the Order of Canada ( the 2nd highest honour of merit in Canada, officer being the 2nd grade of three). His epitaph reads "Let 'er rip".
You might wanna check out the man playing the driving instructor-his name is John Houseman, and he has some pretty solid roots in the acting community, a very deep pedigree.
Watched these movies as a kid in the early 90's, didn't get a lot of the jokes but I still loved them. The original series Police Squad came out on Blu-ray in Australia a few years back. Picked it up and loved it. Then went back and watched the movies again. I actually got the jokes this time which made them even funnier. edit: My sister's kids play baseball, so we do have it here, but no one cares about the professional leagues.
That's Charlotte Zucker at 10:56, the mother of the Zucker brothers, the directors of this movie. She has been in all of their movies starting with their first: _Kentucky Fried Movie._ She was the woman in "Airplane!" who was trying to apply lipstick (unsuccessfully) for the whole movie. She was even in the more serious "Ghost" as the woman at the bank that Whoopi Goldberg interacts with.
Funny that you mention Old Han Solo vibe for Leslie. He actually spoofed Harrison Ford in Wrongfully Accused (1998), which is a parody of The Fugitive and his Jack Ryan movies (among others). It is written and directed by Pat Proft (who co wrote the three Naked Gun and the two Hot Shots!).
The other movies are also great, but the first remains my favorite. I do recommend _Police Squad_ as well. Unfortunately, it didn’t even get what would have been a full season, but I think you’ll really enjoy the celebrity guest stars.
Baseball movies you should check out: Major League, A League of Thier Own, The Sandlot and The Benchwarmers. All comedies or dramadies. And Field of Dreams another great film. Love your reaction Airplane is a funnier movie I think. Leslie Neilson was a serious drama actor before he did the first Airplane movie.
It's both hilarious and annoying when reactors try to bring reason into a movie like this. But "giant tits in the form of buildings" was quite the quote lol
Hi Mary, One of the Zucker brothers, Jerry, directed the movie, Ghost. When it came out in 1990, it was a huge hit. I think you'd really like it. It's suspenseful, funny and a love story all rolled up into one. I'm glad you do a little research before watching a movie, so you have a basic idea what you're reacting to. At the very least anyone who saw a movie in a theater back in the day saw the movie poster and trailer.
Leslie was a Canuck, his father was an officer in the RCMP. At one time his older brother was Deputy Prime Minister of Canada. He suffered from hearing loss problems most of his life.
For a sports movie that you would enjoy, try: "Major League" (1989) Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen "A League of their Own" (1992) Tom Hanks. Based on real events "Necessary Roughness" (1991) Scott Bakula "Cool Running" (1993) John Candy "The Mighty Ducks" (1992) Emilio Estavez "Caddyshack" (1980) all star ensemble cast
(have no idea why its muted at 02:25, sorry about that)

You should definitely watch Airplane
Not sure why. She didn't grasp the humor in this
@@moondog3056 I think slapstick even if at it’s most passive and surreal (the opening credits with the cop car going through the living room, a woman’s locker room) is kinda lost in “fail” video land
*- Nice beaver!*
😂
Surprised you skipped the "Nice Beaver!" scene...best joke in the movie. Full body condoms were right up there.
Women "logic" in 2023:
A man touched a woman = "sexual harassment" 🤡🤣
Driving instructor: Sir John Houseman.
America’s favorite old fart.
It should be remembered, that long before OJ got his reputation, because of the trial, he was a fairly well liked American football player. Priscilla Presley was an actress for the show Dallas. In fact, she was in the infamous season, where the entire season's timeline was erased because it was just a dream.
Priscilla's role in Dallas was limited

RIP legend.
The titty buildings are real. It's the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.
Interesting fact, Weird Al would bring dates to see this movie, wearing the same outfit, without telling them he was in the movie
When the guy at the start gets shot and is then annoyed he got paint on his jacket...man I laughed so HARD! 😂
Leslie Nielsen is the king of parodies. Every parody he is in is usually worth it. His legacy will make laughter in generations to come :D
Mary! I absolutely LOVE that outfit!
Moneyball
Fun Fact: His boss is Tony Soprano's mom... Nancy Marchand.
It's both hilarious and annoying when reactors try to bring reason into a movie like this. But "giant tits in the form of buildings" was quite the quote lol
Hi Mary,
One of the Zucker brothers, Jerry, directed the movie, Ghost.
My Comanche ass be singing and pissing too "Way haw way haaw what hai oh wei! Yaw ... Ooohhhh god yeahhhh ummmm ... hey yaw heyyyyyy"
Leslie was a Canuck, his father was an officer in the RCMP. At one time his older brother was Deputy Prime Minister of Canada. He suffered from hearing loss problems most of his life.
This means you gotta watch Airplane! Great to see you laugh like that
Yes I’ve been waiting for this one!!
Field of Dreams has baseball in it, but it is much more than a baseball movie. One of the most tear-jerking movies I have ever seen.
Try not to make an impractical movie so practical. Just laugh lol
At the time this movie came out, Leslie Neilson was 61 years old and Priscilla Presley was 42, so they were only 19 years apart in age.
You're gonna love this one! 😂
For a sports movie that you would enjoy, try:
"Major League" (1989) Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen
"A League of their Own" (1992) Tom Hanks. Based on real events
"Necessary Roughness" (1991) Scott Bakula
"Cool Running" (1993) John Candy
"The Mighty Ducks" (1992) Emilio Estavez
"Caddyshack" (1980) all star ensemble cast
