Somebody said that “Frank Drebin is someone who thinks he’s in an action movie, but doesn’t realize he’s in a comedy”, and I think that’s the perfect way to describe him lol

That's more than likely because he played more serious roles prior to his career in comedy, and he took alot of that with him
It was probably Leslie Nielson himself who said it. He was great at understanding what made him funny.

Leslie Nielson started out as a serious leading man...never quite made it to A list status. Like a good thespian, he took lemons and made lemonade.
This man was, and always will be, a comedic legend. You are missed Mr Nielsen.
Seriously. He was truly incredible at his craft.
Sadly Comedy also almost died out in movies when he died... it was golden era of parodies..probably stopped beacuse of austin powers stupidity ...:/
I also have a feeling like we won't get anyone close to this level again anymore. Nielsen is of those irreplacables, one of a kind.

Naked gun is such a great example of jokes per minute that by the end of it you don´t even know what you are laughing about anymore

They never make parody movies anymore. Modern movies kind of suck. Compared to 80s and 90s stuff.
In case you didn’t know, Naked Gun is a movie based on a 6 episode tv show from a decade earlier called Police Squad. The opening sequence and many of the jokes at the station are continuations of jokes from the show. For instance, the scientist always had some weird experiment running in each episode, and the tall guy was always there.
Yes, we learned about the show shortly after filming this reaction! We'd love to check it out sometime.

I noticed it too. The late great Leslie Nielsen was quite literally a "serious talent".
Nielsen started as a serious drama actor. He was in the film "Forbidden Planet" and it's such a different feel. He's the perfect straightman because of his training.
Oh wow, I (Chris) actually saw Forbidden Planet a while back in film school. I'll look it up and find his scene 😂
@@NiceDudeMovieNight You're in luck. He's the headliner of the movie. Forbidden planet was also the first movie to use a full synthesizer for the soundtrack I believe.
Yeah, that's the wonderful thing. For decades, Leslie Nielsen had made a career as a straight dramatic actor. But one movie, Airplane!, released a whole new side of him and gave him a "new career" at a point when many leading men have to retire gracefully. Nobody knew he had such an aptitude for silliness.
If you want to see Nielsen in another serious role, watch the original Ransom.
My favorite straight performance from Leslie Nielsen was as the victim in a Columbo episode called Identity Crisis.
When this movie first came out, Weird Al would take dates to see it in the theater, without mentioning that he has a cameo in the first 4 minutes of the movie. What a move!
Unrelated but fun fact: this is was about 4 years after OJ was turned down for the role of The Terminator because they felt like he couldn't possibly be believable as such a dangerous, murderous fiend.

Weird Al would do so while also wearing the exact same shirt he had on in the movie, and wouldn't say anything about it unless his date pointed it out.

I've never heard of OJ auditioning for "Terminator", but if it is true then that would be morbidly hilarious.

Especially that last bit where he asked to "lend him $20" so he can then bribe him with it! So good.
There's an extended cut where, at the end of the conversation, the dock worker asks if Frank wants an address and Frank replies,
"Not on a cop's salary."
The bribery joke and the bingo joke, thats my favorite.

My Mother remembers Leslie Nielsen as this serious,dramatic actor. When we saw this she was laughing with tears in her eyes. That was the best part for me. The safe sex scene made her spit out her popcorn. Fantastic 👏🏻

Leslie Nielsen was a legend. I first saw this when my sister got us a VCD. We tore up laughing at the collision sequence with the doctor.
That sequence is so ridiculous 😂
I had and still have VCD'S of the first two. Even after DVD'S the amount of VCD releases that had extra or alternate scenes was amazing. Uncut before uncut was a thing.
5:10 - the bribe/reverse bribe was the funniest thing to me. It was just so ridiculous.
You might need to rewatch this, but I love when the doctor was checking Nordberg's pulse THROUGH the arm cast.
All the Naked Gun films are just insane. Leslie Nielsen is so good at deadpan humor.
Leslie Nielsen was a Canadian treasure. His early acting career was not in comedy, but then they discovered that he could do that. Well, of course he can. Canada makes great comedians.
They didn't have to try hard to get Weird Al. He loves the Zuckers, and he's said many times one of his favorite movies is Top Secret! He probably agreed before they even finished asking.

When he was dating, Al would bring his dates to see this movie, and wear what he was wearing in the movie.
The red nuts that Frank and Ed were eating were pistachios that were dyed red. Back in the day, foreign companies would dye their pistachios red to hide unsightly blotches on the outer shells to make them more appealing.
Yuck! Glad I can eat those now...I had a tree nut allergy, but I grew out of it!
It was because by the time you bought them, they were half rotten. They used to be slowly imported from the Middle East.
Naked Gun is a classic case of "We'll hit you with so many jokes, you will not remember why you're laughing anymore" and also, every joke hits, perfectly.
Saw this opening weekend back when it came out in Theaters.
I was 14, and my Parents took me, my younger brother (11), his friend, and 2 of my friends. It was a packed house that day...
I have never laughed so hard in my life. In fact, that Press Conference scene, where he left his mic on, I would periodically think about that scene during the movie, and just start laughing out of nowhere again!!
This movie has been in my Top 5 ALL TIME favorite Movie experiences EVER!
Just an all around amazing Movie, and much of it is due to the writing, and the incomparable Leslie Nielsen.

Just to let you know, when Leslie neilsen starred in Airplane in 1977 there were 1759 jokes applied through the movie. Every corner, every sentence, every shot had a joke applied inside. Signs, words, posters or other forms of media.
Airplane! was released in 1980 and is almost a shot for shot remake of the black and white B-movie 'Zero Hour', which has been compared with it in other RUclips posts
I love this humor, both playing on words, and slapstick, even the dumb jokes are surprisingly well placed.
Wholesomely absurdist, a good illustration of how seriousness and deadpan demenanor can bring several layers of fun through discrepant actions.
Everytime he says use your open eye Frank I die laughing. One of my favorite gags in the whole movie. I'm glad you said it because I've always thought OJ Simpson is actually excellent in this movie. His comedic timing with physical comedy is actually pretty good.
Before Deadpool there was this naked gun
I just want to say that I appreciate you subtitling the movie clips. A great solution to a problem most reaction channels face.
I remember when I was 10 and thinking the "Nothing to see here!" scene was one of the funniest things I ever saw. I remember saying something to my dad like, "He's saying nothing to see here, but look dad! The building is exploding behind him with fireworks!" while I was cry-laughing and gasping for air and wanting to rewind and watch again 😂. I'm still laughing just thinking about that scene. I'm sure my dad was proud that his 10 yr old daughter got the joke 😂
This really was a golden age for comedy movies.
The boat scene at the beginning remains one of the most hilarious shit I've ever seen. It's just comic genius.
Good to know that you guys enjoyed it. They don't make this kind of comedies anymore and they still tend to get some chuckles from me.

Fun fact, while this movie was in theaters weird Al yankovic used to take his dates to go see the movie wearing the same exact outfit he wore in the movie.
The TV show Police Squad is pretty much just like this. It was canceled for being too funny. It really was. Network executives didn’t like how dense it was with visual gags especially, saying that people didn’t want to have to watch the screen constantly for fear of missing a joke.
I'm sorry, how do you cancel a show for being too funny? There's gotta be a more sane explanation than that
That's actually really interesting! It makes sense though because back in the day, TV was also a "background device" of sorts, because people would do their laundry, cook dinner, etc. while the TV is on, so the storytelling relied a lot of dialogue back in the day so someone can still follow what's going on without using their eyes 😮
@@stephanniemorin It's true. The network's prime-time president at the time basically thought the show was asking too much of the television viewer, saying they would have to actually pay attention to get it. I think that if it had come out ten years later it would have been an enormous hit.
@@NiceDudeMovieNight 🤔 that sounds more like the radio to me, people didn’t put comedies and sitcoms in the background in the 80’s unless you’d seen it already, and from what I understand people gathered around the radio before tv.

He told Terry that Americans tended to have their TV on in the background and that Police Squad got cancelled because it was a show you had to pay attention to. But obviously not enough viewers did.

Leslie Nielson was famous for his serious and dramatic roles. Then he was cast in Airplane and the rest was comedy history
Leslie is damn amazing. He narrated a deep sea documentary also in the 70's or 80's and hes voice is so fitting. I wish he would have made narrated nature documentaries more

"Airplane!" was Nielsen's first comedy, as well as for Lloyd Bridges, Robert Stack, and Peter Graves. After "Airplane!", Nielsen starred in a short-lived tv show (6 episodes) called "Police Squad", which was the basis for the "Naked Gun" trilogy. BTW, you guys are officially my favorite reactors.
Man, if only I could rewatch this movie for the first time again (still one of the funniest movies ever). It's just pure comedi gold.

My twin brother and I had seen this in a double feature at the movies with "Twins" and we just absolutely laughed our tails off! 😂 Leslie Nielsen was such a great actor in here, even when he played the role as ultra serious.
All three movies were born from the tv series "Police Squad!" Absolutely hilarious. Sad that there are only 6 episodes.

It's been mentioned already that Leslie Nielsen was a dramatic actor. He played dozens of serious roles on TV.
What I find really funny is that in this period of doing all of this comedy, it wasn't just a role. He would frequently do interviews in a very serious way. But, he always made sure he had a WHOOPI cushion in his pocket. And at certain points in a serious interview he would lean forward to let out a and then say "Excuse Me!!" He just hit this stride later in life and it was Fantastic.
The one film that had me gasping for air, in the theatre, from laughing so hard...pure genius!
The wet paint part had me in TEARS
The interviews he did with his little fart machine were amazing. The one where the interview was trying to be serious and he kept squeezing one out at inappropriate times is so funny.
It's so sweet that they deadpanned every scene. Soon after, this style of comedy became self-aware and the party was pretty much over.
80s was definitely the best decade for comedies.. Even at 8 years old white haired Leslie Nielsen was my favorite actor
One gag a lot of reactors miss: The cheese that gets put on top of Frank's refrigerator crawls slowly across the surface...
Yeah, I must've seen the movie at least a dozen times and only recently I noticed that. And now that I know, I'm thinking how did I miss that, it looks so obvious now.
2:45 I watched this movie in its opening week four times in full packed matinées, countless times in cable tv, and in public television, and it is today for the first time I catch the joke of the hospital building named as “The Hospital”. 🤦🏾♂️
It was going to have a parody name, like Our Lady of Perpetual Motion, but Ricardo Montalban, a devout Catholic, objected. So they just changed it to The Hospital.

Hey, it's Enrique Palazzo!
The actor playing the driving instructor, John Houseman, was sort of a celebrity in the '80s. I saw him in a lot of ads. I think he became famous because of a '70s movie called "The Paper Chase," where he played a prestigious law professor. The way we knew him was just how you see him in the driving scene; very dry, and composed.
I quote this movie often haha I basically know it by heart. I remember watching it when I was a kid and this movie is funny even when it's translated to other languages (in my case Polish). Also, I've always loved how the whole "Enrico Palazzo" plot pays out later when Frank saves the day and everyone yells "It's Enrico Palazzo"
This is easily one of my favourite movies ever, so fun seeing others react to it
"this is so fuckin stupid" is precisely the comedic genius of these movies, they get me to laugh twice, once at the joke and then again at myself for being dumb enough to laugh at the joke
The bathroom scene has me cracking up no matter how many times I see it. LOL
This is the one where his partner asks him if he wants to take a dinghy at the docks and Frank says, _"No thanks. I took one back at the station."_ right? 😂

The best part of these movies is that the drop off of the sequels is actually little to none. They are as good as this one.
Leslie Nielson made his career, and defined an entire style of comedy, by acting in ridiculous scenes and delivering absurd dialogue completely deadpan and straight-faced. He was originally a serious dramatic actor (he was the captain of the ship in the original 1972 'The Poseidon Adventure') but when he was cast in Airplane! his entire career trajectory changed, despite him barely having to change his acting style at all.
The sequel is even better! My grandmother took me to go see these in the theater when i was a kid and everyone was turned around watching me cause I was laughing so hard I nearly fell out of my seat into the isle!
Saw this in the theater back when I was in college couldn't stop crying and almost fell out of my seat.😂😂

I think the last time they tried was that awful "Movie 42" or something, and it was sooooo bad.
Above all, there's comedy for me. And like you said, it's packed with jokes all over the place. Good jokes. You don't have to be offensive or cheap to get a laugh. But you have to put some work into it. I love seeing younger people from around the globe experiencing things that are such a huge part of me. Awesome video.
Leslie Neilsen nailed it. The Naked Gun is a movie spin-off of a TV show called Police Squad. They hired a dramatic actor to do comedy. Now he's known for comedy. Nailed it.

The thing about this movie is there are so many jokes that even if you’ve seen it you will not remember all the joke or you missed a few jokes so a second or third watching is still fun
The Naked Gun, based on the show Police Files (in fact, the films might as well be feature-length episodes) is a wonderful example of Leslie Nielson's perfect comedic timing.
Nielson started as a pure serious actor back in his early career, and was pretty much a washed up hasbin actor because he had been typecast as a serious lead for dramatic and sci-fi films of the era. That was until the film Airplane! came out. Putting him as the comically serious doctor in that film relaunched his career as a comedic actor, at which point he took off running, whoopy cushion in jacket, and never looked back.
And just think, there is an entire three-five generations out there, me included, who have never known Leslie Nielson as anything more than one of the funniest actors of his time.
Man, not only do you manage to catch the feeling of every film you watch n with your editing, you balance it perfectly with your commentary. Seriously, for such a minimal premise, you've really nailed it.
Leslie Nielsen enjoyed a long career in dramatic roles (Including appearing in Forbidden Planet, a pioneering sci-fi film that pretty much created the modern space sci-fi genre), which coincidentally made him perfect to be the straight man to the ZAZ comedic style. He delivered some of the best deadpan/straight man performances in comedies.
Last time I watched this was with my friend years ago and we were on 🍄

I've seen this movie a 1000 times. You definitely have to watch it multiple times to catch everything.
Whst people don’t get is Leslie Nielsen was a very serious actor in the old days so it really threw people off and surprised them. I remember my father telling me this when the movie came out and since looked it up years back.

Herman's Hermits, one of my favourite bands. It was literally the first concert I went to as a kid. (technically, it was Peter Noone and Herman's Hermits) I forgot that this was in the movie.
oh, and there is a TV series called Police Squad! that this movie was based on. There are only 6 episodes, but for some reason, ABC (I think) cancelled the series because it was funny on such a different level they did not think people would get it. All six episodes can be found on RUclips. I would recommend it highly to watch.
Love the Police Squad and Naked Gun series. The master of mannerisms Lesley Nielson is fantastic, with genius comedic timing. Has me in tears everytime!

Honestly for me another level of funny is that Leslie is Canadian and plays an American detective, who can’t sing the us national anthem and does the whole Queen table surfing. Maybe that’s just me 🤔
Also Drebin kinda reminds me of Drax from Guardians of the galaxy. He takes everything sooo literally.

The stabbing of the fish is maybe as much as I've ever laughed in a non-Monty Python movie.

Whenever I watch this movie I think of watching it with my family when I was 7 or 8, and I asked my dad why she was sucking Drebin's finger like that. My dad went "she thinks it's a piece of meat" and mam nudged his arm, playfully admonishing him "John!" and it took me 20 years to rewatch it and get the joke xD Funny dude was my old man lol. I hope you watch Spy Hard sometime, I saw it again the other day and it's one of Neilson's best imo ^_^

Two little things:
1) the Swiss Army Shoe - a lady Bond villain Rosa Klebb in From Russia With Love had a poisoned switchblade shoe that she tried to kick Bond with.
2) pistachios used to be dyed red. I don't know why. It didn't have a flavor and you'd get the red fingers etc. just like Cheetos. They stopped dyeing them when red dye #2 was found to cause cancer. Yikes!
Even after watching this movie like 10 times (the first time when I was not more than 12 years old), it still makes me laugh so hard. I think this is hands down the funniest movie ever made. Though I know that everyone has a different sense of humor - this one just hits me 100%.
I mean… „Nice Beaver“ brings me to tears everytime :D
I hope you guys get the chance to watch the other Naked Gun movies. The trilogy will always be hilariously awesome to me. 😁
The baseball scene in this movie is on every time someone strikes out and we're winning or tied. We have fun at our ball park lol!
I usually dont really like plots being "character is so incompetent at his job that you wonder just how they got in with all of these accidents". And I probably still wont like this movie for that reason alone. But youve gotta admit...it knows what it is and doesnt even try to hide its silliness
The woman being hypnotized at 8:05 is the Zucker brothers' mother. She has been in every single one of their movies. For example, in Airplanr she was the woman who kept trying to put on her makeup (and gets lipstick all over her face). In "Ghost" (an excellent non-comedy) she was the bank teller that Whoopi Goldberg talks to.
