The three vocalists of Three Dog Night were not brothers. Chuck Negron (the lead singer on One), Corey Wells and Danny Hutton formed together as the vocal group Redwood and did some preliminary recording with Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. When that fell through the three singers brought in the musicians Floyd Sneed (drums), Joe Schermie (bass), Michael Allsup (guitar) and Jimmy Greenspoon (keyboards) and renamed themselves Three Dog Night. One was a top 10 hit in 1968 and helped propel the band to stardom.
Three Dog Night was all over the radio from 1968 to 1974 with many top 40 hits. An interesting fact is that each lead singer managed to score a number one hit. Danny Hutton sang the lead on Black And White, Corey Wells sang the lead on Mama Told Me Not To Come, and Chuck Negron sang the lead on Joy To The World. All three hit the top of the top 40.

I absolutely love Three Dog Night! They have so many great songs. I was probably 12 when this song came out. I saved my money and rode my sting ray to the record store and bought the album. About 8 or 9 years later i sat 10 feet from them at a bar they were playing at. They were still great and i couldnt believe i was at a table next to the stage! Great review Britt!

I was into Three Dog Night as a kid. I was too young to be a Beatles fan (became one later on of course) and Three Dog Night was marketed as "the next Beatles". While they fell short of that...as most bands did...they did dominate the Pop music scene for a while.

In the Australian outback, how cold it is determines how many dogs you let in your sleeping bag... A three dog night is darn cold. TDN are Americans but I always thought their name was pretty cool.

Please do their version of Eli's Coming (better hide your heart away), written by Laura Nyro, one of the 4 great women singer-songwriters of the early 1970s.

Yes, definitely. Laura Nyro wrote it. She was one of greatest composers of the 1970s. And Nyro also wrote "Stoned Soul Picnic" (made a hit by 5th Dimension) and Wedding Bell Blues (also a hit by the 5th Dimension).

On September 12, 1969, I attended my very first concert. Performing that night were The Grass Roots, Three Dog Night, and Steppenwolf. I was not that familiar with Three Dog Night before that evening. They recorded their performance for a live album and they stole the show! People were rocking out in the aisles! And the price of my ticket for this concert? $2.50.

Great comments, epically bout 3 lead singers. I didn't know this. The name came from sleeping out at night. A night requiring 3 dogs was very col.

THAT SONG WAS WRITTEN BY SINGER/SONGWRITER HARRY NILSSON. HARRY ACCORDING TO JOHN LENNON WAS HIS FAVORITE SINGER. COULDNT BELIEVE THE VOCALS COMING FROM THE MOUTH OF THIS CLEAN CUT BURLEY, FORMER BANK WORKER . WHEN HE HEARD "WITHOUT YOU", NILSSONS GREATEST SONG, HE WAS BLOWN AWAY. NOT SURE HOW 3 DOG NIGHT ENDED UP RECORDING IT BUT WHAT A PERFECT GIFT THEY RECEIVED FROM HARRY. KIND OF LIKE NEIL DIAMOND WRITING IM A BELIEVER. AND THE MONKEES GET A BIG HIT WITH IT. BRITT, IF YOU HAVE NOT HEARD " WITHOUT YOU" BY HARRY NILSSON, YOU NEED TO. IT WILL KNOCK YOUR SOX OFF. 3 DOG NIGHT WITH THIER BAND OF SINGERS, HAD GREAT SUCCESS WITH MOST SONGS THEY COVERED. AFTER " ONE" BECAME A HIT, THE POSSIBILITY OF EVER HAVING ANOTHER 3DOG NIGHT DISSAPPEARED....
