    Fun facts this song was written by Hoyt Axton who is a true character in the world of music. Amazing storyteller. And his mother was Mae Boren Axton who wrote the Elvis hit Heartbreak Hotel. She was known as the Queen Mother of Nashville. Wrote a lot of hits herself.

      Hi, hope you're doing well.
      My very first film I ever did was with Stella Stevens as a director and she knew Hoyt Axton. He was in town and I got to sit across the table from both of them while they talked. It was written as a children's song for a TV show that never happened.
      Three Dog Night did not write their own Tunes they just did covers and I'm fine with that. Read the book One is the Loneliest Number by Johnny greenspoon. Thank you

      Hoyt Axton is best known as a country singer and song writer and sometimes actor. He played the inventor father in Gremlins. Della and the Dealer, Rusty Old Halo, and Wild Bull Rider are just a few of his songs.

    I don't know what "Jeremiah was a bullfrog" means, and do you know what? I don't really care. Some songs are just so darn good and linger in your soul that whatever a lyric means is sometimes irrelevant. Sometimes the purpose of a song is just to have a good time, and Three Dog Night always delivered in that respect.

    • @christophercombs3501
      @christophercombs3501 11 месяцев назад +24

      "Bull Frog" is slang for Frenchman...So Jeremiah was from France and spoke French which is why he couldn't understand a single word he said and why he had some "mighty fine wine".

      @PatrickSmith 11 месяцев назад +8

      ChatGPT 4 says:
      "Jeremiah was a bullfrog" is the opening line of the song "Joy to the World" by Three Dog Night. The songwriter, Hoyt Axton, has explained that the line doesn't really have any deep or symbolic meaning. Instead, it was a nonsensical placeholder that he initially intended to replace with something else. However, the band liked it, so it stayed in the song.
      The line is catchy and memorable, which can help draw listeners into the song. However, it's not meant to convey a specific message or theme beyond simply setting a lighthearted and playful tone for the song.

    • @christophercombs3501
      @christophercombs3501 11 месяцев назад +7

      @@PatrickSmith The fact that Hoyt Axton was creating a line that doesn't really have any deep or symbolic meaning that he intended to replace with something else doesn't refute the fact that "Bull Frog" was slang for Frenchman. The English derogatorily called the French "frogs" and specifically Frenchmen "bull frogs" as early as 1750. The term was brought to the US, without the derogatory stigma, by US soldiers returning from Europe after World War II.

      Jeremiah WAS a bullfrog -- a croaker. The prophet Jeremiah talked about how Israel was going to be judged by God and punished for its transgressions. Prophets of doom were called "croakers." But Jeremiah also prophesied the restoration of Israel and the coming of the Messiah. Thus, "Joy to the World!"

    Hey Britt. I grew up (well some say I've never grown up, but that's another story) listening to this music. As far as what I remember about this song, some thought it was in reference to Jeremiah, the Prophet in the Bible. But according to Hoyt Axton, the country singer who wrote the song, he was sipping wine and trying to come up with the lyrics to the song and Jeremiah was a Bullfrog was the first thing that popped into his head and it just stuck. Funny how people just come up with lyrics like that, but it was one of Three Dog Night's biggest hits. Thanks to your Mom-in-law for suggesting this, brings back many memories!

    Three Dog Night always brings the soul. And yeah, this was an incredibly popular Sing-along song. We Sing it on the playground but even now, in the right setting, if you were just a randomly start singing the chorus, there would be other people that would join in. And no it doesn't have anything to do with the standard Christmas Carol called Joy to the World.
    This was one of those rock bands that everybody just like. They're so likeable. And they featured three guys that can sing their asses off. They had several big hits and they are all fantastic songs: One, Mama Told Me Not To Come, Road To Shambala, I've Never Been To Spain, That Ain't The Way That It Works, etc.

      "According to the band’s official website, the name Three Dog Night comes from a phrase often used by Aboriginal Australian hunters as a barometer for how cold a night in the Outback would be.
      The hunters would dig a hole in the ground and then use dingos to keep warm. If it was cold they’d sleep with two dogs. If it was freezing it would be a “three-dog night.” They wanted to include the number three somewhere in their moniker as a representation of the idea that there are three lead singers."

      No matter how hot the day, the outback can be freezing at night. Cloud cover can stop the earth from warming up, though clouds can take years to come in a 7-year or longer drought. Drought also causes extreme destructive wild-fires, so warmth in a drought would be better not depending on fire. Dingoes however are wild dogs, not to be trusted around kids. That said, there are always dogs of all sizes around original aussie towns, and animals know how to survive.

    Love it girl, this one definitely has you trippin. These guys were great. RIP Cory. Had the extreme pleasure of roadying for them back in the day. Nicest most laid back guys I've ever hung out with. Named my son Jeremiah and took him to see one of their concerts when he was 4. When he heard them sing his name he went crazy. As for the line in the song, Hoyt Axton, the songwriter, said it was just a filler lyric to hold the rhythm of the song but before he could change it Three Dog Night recorded it into a huge hit and the lyric stuck.

    Saw these guys back in the day and they were great. Not too many bands featured 3 vocalists.

    One of the biggest hits of 1971. #1 everywhere. Three Dog Night was huge in the early '70s. Lots of hits. This was the biggest. Written by country/folk troubadour Hoyt Axton who wrote a number of amusing ditties. Check out Three Dog Night's "Mama Told Me Not to Come," "Never Been to Spain," and "One," among others.

    I walk around singing this song....70's girl!! Graduated in 79. Bell bottom Levi's, dittos saddle back, long hair and drive in movies. Who else remember dittos. My daughters pulled mine out of my dresser and wore them in high school. In the 90's I had all my old Levi's and dittos... Lol.

    Excerpts from the song has been taken over the years and inserted into different commercials and even in TV shows and movies. I remember an episode of the X-Files where a wounded Mulder asked Sculley to sing him a song while they waited in a forest and the song, she chose was this one. I'm 66 and still sing this song, of course to myself, while driving or doing chores. It's an uplifting song.

    A fun fact for you here is that Hoyt Axton and his mother Mae Boren Axton, are the only mother and son to have both written #1 songs on the Billboard charts songs. She wrote "Heart Break Hotel" which was a #1 hit for Elvis Presley. When I was 14 years old, in 1968, I attended my first concert: "Three Dog Night" It was a great experience and they sand my fav' song of theirs which is "Eli's Coming." Check that one out.

    The original words to this song written by Hoyt Axton was "Jerimiah was a Prophet" (which makes since with the rest of the words). Chuck Negron didn't think that would sell records so we change the word Prophet to Bullfrog! The whole thing makes no since but it sold a lot of records! It was a big time hit!
