A key promise in Paris’s bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics was that its famous river, the Seine, would be cleaned up in time to host open water swimming events: the triathlon, para triathlon, and marathon swimming. But swimming has been banned in the Seine for a century because the Paris sewer system is designed to dump wastewater into the river during heavy rain, when the sewers get overwhelmed by stormwater.
When that happens, levels of E. coli, a bacteria associated with fecal matter, spike in the river, making it too contaminated to swim in. In order to make good on its promise to clean the river, Paris officials took on a $1.5 billion USD infrastructure project that includes a massive underground tank and tunnel system meant to hold excess sewage during heavy rain and prevent further contamination of the Seine.
Water quality testing will be done daily ahead of the Olympic games this summer, and Paris officials are hopeful their ambitious plan to host swimming in the famously polluted river will succeed.

Companies like Betterhelp and Established Titles convinced me to get Sponsorblock. I didn't have that big of an issue with Sponsorships before then but promoting literal scams is unacceptable. If RUclipsrs won't hold these companies accountable then they shouldn't complain about not making any money. The same happened with Banner and Video ads before. People didn't have a problem with them until they become overly bothersome.

@@nax1807 As with most things a few people had a bad experience with a bad therapist, and now people want to tear down the whole system. Better help does a lot of good and has a lot of happy customers.

The 2024 Netflix Movie "Under Paris" is comically similar to this entire scenario. The swimming leg of a triathlon is held in the same river full of giant sharks. There's even a stubborn Mayor of Paris who insists the race should go ahead amid warnings to cancel it.
Maybe this is not famous outside France, but, in 1995, Chirac promised he would swimm in the seine before 2002. 22y later the river is still not safe ...

Therapy is great but BetterHelp has shown on multiple occasions to be the opposite of that. I know Vox needs money but pick a better sponsor, you have the viewer base to support choice.
Do they need money though? Seems like the parent company Comcast Penske Media Corporation is doing quite well. I know Vox is presenting itself as a small independent journalistic operation that barely stays afloat, but is that true? I don't know the answer but I am suspicious though. regardless they shouldnt take sponsors that do morally dubious stuff, at least i know that for sure.

"Giant 13 million gallon capacity"? Thirteen million gallons is literally a drop in the bucket. Paris is 105 square kilometers. A quarter inch of rain over 10 square miles equates to 43 million gallons.

As a french person i'm pretty sad you did not mention the plan of some people to poop directly in the river few days before the Olympics to make Macron and Hidlago regret spending billions on that event... Love the french creativity when it comes to protest

Don't forget history said they are not the most clean. Older infrastructure is harder to fix, they will need to gut it. So yes it's not cheap or a priority.

Surely, there must be pools where athletes can swim. There might not be pools that can accommodate a thousand spectators, but organized sports are televised anyway. It's my understanding that the 2020 Olympics didn't have in-person spectators either.

10-15 times a year sewage is dumped in the Seine is nothing compared to the UK where most sewer overflows discharge well over 50 times and there are numerous examples of them discharging over 150 times a year.
Which UK cities use combined effluent and stormwater systems?
@@av_oid The question is more which do not. A few new developments segregate waste from rainwater, but most areas have combined sewer systems. Discharges also frequently happen at sewage works when the 'storm tanks' which are supposed to store excess water overflow into rivers.

I don't know if I would be comfortable swimming in this river until I knew that no sewage was being drained into it at all and it had been thoroughly cleaned.
Did they actually say whether it was treated or untreated sewage? I don't think they specified if it was raw sewage or not.
The most astonishing thing is that they knew for 8 years that they will be hosting the Olympics in 2024. And yet they still failed to take any measures to actually improve the quality of the water in Seine.

Probably because there were fewer toxic chemicals being dumped into the waters in 1900 and there were like a quarter of the people living in the Greater Paris area compared to today.
It shouldn't be too big of a problem if most people already don't give many s**ts about the Olympics to start with.

I was just in Paris last week. Let's just say, the Seine didn't look like something I would swim in. But I guess I am spoiled, living in Zurich with a river so clean, you can see far to the ground and there are several public baths along the river Limmat.
