    She is a certified 'bad ass' soulful, bluesey rock singer! Her dad was a famous Broadway actor/singer. I saw her back in the early 70's when she was a first act before the Byrds. She came out w one guitar & her outrageous voice & shut up all the detractors that only wanted to see the featured artists, the Byrds. She told everyone to 'shut the #*% up and just listen!' And then she rocked the house!

    In the mid 70s, every girl I knew in college was required to own at least one Bonnie Raitt album and one Carole King, namely Tapestry. I drove through a blizzard to see hear her at a ski resort. Me and about 20 other people braved the storm and had Bonnie all to ourselves. Awesome

    Bonnie has been doing this a long time. As a young performer, her favorite artist was Sippie Wallace, whom she met at the 1972 Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival. She spent a lot of time with Lowell George and Little Feat - she loved Lowell's slide guitar playing - and can be found in the back-up vocals on a number of tracks. If you haven't done a deep dive on Bonnie it is well worth your time. Additionally, a deep dive on Little Feat will blow your mind. A good place to start would be the song Spanish Moon.

    Bonnie does it all: blues, country, soul, folk, as well as rock. Put them all together and file under Americana. I most highly recommend "Angel from Montgomery" particularly the duet version with Ruthie Foster. It's a melancholy country blues written by John Prine, elevated to glory. I've had the great good fortune to hear/see both of these talented ladies in concert, but separately. They are national treasures.

    Love Bonnie Raitt - you can tell she's comfortable enough with her songs that she can take some liberties with it. Kind of like a Willie Nelson or Eric Clapton, she likes switching it up. Definitely a "mature woman coming into her power" vibe with her, too.

  • @rapidfirerob4
    @rapidfirerob4 Год назад +2

    So many great songs and albums, it's almost not fair. She used to have the great Sippie Wallace open for her, recognizing her roots. I saw her with Jackson Browne doing an anti nukes benefit. My favorite Bonnie performance was at The Greek Theater in Berkeley. It was her brother's birthday. Her father was there, the legendary Broadway performer, John Raitt. He came out and sang Oklahoma with Bonnie and her band. Everyone was standing and raising their arms when the word Oklahoma was sung. Then they sang Happy Birthday, of course. She does look like Meryl Streep, though I never noticed it, another great talent. Bonnie is 73 and Meryl is 74. Great insights, as usual.

    Bonnie Raitt was a respected blues singer and slide guitarist for years but not a commercial success until the late 80s/early 90s. She was one the cover of Rolling Stone in the 70s after her legendary cover of John Prine's "Angel From Montgomery", and played with Warren Zevon, Lowell George, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, many others. Many people knew her name, but it took a while to have major chart success. Since then though, she has become an icon of blues and roots music.

    Bonnie is one of THE best slide guitarists ever. She worked a long time before commercial success hit. She was 45 when her Nick of Time album won the Grammy for best record. I remember the first time I heard her on the radio. Her song Nick of Time played right after Stevie RayVaughn’s Tightrope. It was a life changing music day for me, bcz it was my first time hearing Stevie Ray Vaughan too. Neither she or Stevie Ray, can be equaled in their gifts. I regret never getting to see Stevie Ray live , RIP. Bonnie, I have seen twice. Never disappoints.

She was fiery and would still worry about others' gossip but then she had friends who loved her that way. I am just like her and it's lonely when you tell folks exactly what they make you feel. That fearlessness is hard. In the 60's, it got you lifelong friends but in the 80's, it was cool until middle school. Then nope.

    Written by homegirl Shirley Eikhard🇨🇦.Started hearing about her around the time i returned to Toronto from Vancouver, '78-ish. Met Shirley in '86 when she visited the manager of the restaurant I worked in, the owner had another place Shirley had performed in and they'd become friends. I, being a smoker, and Shirley being very averse and sensitive, hung well back so as not to trigger or offend. Anyhoo, great song, great interpreter in Bonnie, an all-round class act and top-tier talent. 😊❤
    There was another red-haired slide-blues playing chick(!) named Ellen McIlwaine, who'd jammed with Jimi Hendrix, opened for numerous blues legends in NYC in the mid-60s, and relocated to Canada in the 80s, iirc, first Toronto, later Calgary. I caught an interview with her on a local TV station in '89 or '90 where she said her video for her new song was inspired by a show from the multilingual station at which I worked. I tried to tell the producers but they weren't interested. 😢 Ellen passed a year ago next week, sadly. Another class act. She was of the opinion that God thought She'd had such a great idea with the red-headed blues mama thang that She made two of 'em! ❤✨️🕊

    She is the real deal. Her version of Angel From Montgomery is my favorite, written by John Prine - a legend in his own right. Love the performance where they sang it together.

    This was "our song" when I needed someone to help me through some rough times. It wasn't a serious relationship - we both knew we weren't "the one" for the other, but that was okay. In reality life at the time was more like a Barry Manilow song -- but the public side of the relationship was all about giving them something to talk about.
    Thanks for the memories.

    Bonnie spent a good 15 years becoming an overnight success. She earned her right to be as sassy as she wants. listen to Angel From Montgomery for a change of pace.
