Some random facts about Bonnie from a long-time fan. She is the daughter of John Raitt, a Broadway/Hollywood musical actor from the 50's. She 1st made a mark in the NY folk scene in the late 60's, along with her friend Jackson Browne. Her 1st record came out in 1972 (I bought it!) & she released a new record this year & was just on the Colbert Show. She is one of the best bottleneck guitar players -- look at the slide she uses on the frets of the guitar. She is fabulous!!!

Her 1st record was self titled released in 1971. Her second was released in 1972 called Give It Up that put her on the map. It was shortly after that release that I first saw her at the Philharmonic in NYC. Seen her twice since here in StLouis, once following Chris Isaack as opening act, and she was follwed by Don Henley. Wow -what a show.

She did get voted onto Rolling Stone’s “Top 100 Guitarists” ( forgot what year ) at the rank of 54. I think she was the top female vote-getter.
Abosolutely! I've been a fan since the 70s. I used to sing Angel From Montgomery a lot. I remember the night she FINALLY won Grammy's, I was so excited. I was jumping up and down saying Yes Yes Yes! lol
@@Fuphyter Yeah, loved seeing her get lots of recognition ! Unfortunately I almost saw her live in 92’, but my girlfriend bought the tickets and mixed up which night it was. We were watching the 11pm local news and saw a report about the concert - aargghh !! Finally caught her show in 13’ and she still was a thrill to see.

One of the all-time greats - both vocally and instrumentally. Both BB King and John Lee Hooker gushed about her slide playing. And her voice is legendary. Absolutely deserved being placed in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Bonnie started as a blues artist and was mentored by the great old Delta Blues artists in the South. Bonnie started a Blues Foundation that basically makes sure the OG’s get all their royalties and all kinds of life care that they may need. She is one of the greatest blues slide guitarists in the world.
She’s Blues. Mostly. Except Angel From Montgomery. Her 1st hit was in the early 70s. She still has it. GOAT
Angel from Montgomery was written and first performed by Leonard Cohen, and I think she may have done a duet with him. But it became her song, in my mind the first time I heard her sing it. Yes!

"Something to Talk About" was written by Canadian singer/songwriter Shirley Eikhard (RIP). Bonnie made Shirley more than just a local legend, and would visit whenever she came to Canada.
I saw Bonnie live in Montreal. She is so cool, and her band has been with her forever. Fabulous
I met Shirley Eikhard many years ago at a Toronto folk festival and she couldn't have been nicer. What a lovely person - happy, approachable, humble and incredibly talented. I was so sad to learn of her passing in 2022.
J&A Interesting Fun Fact: From Wikipedia: “She became clean in 1987. She has credited Stevie Ray Vaughan for breaking her substance abuse, saying that what gave her the courage to admit her alcohol problem and stop drinking was seeing that Stevie Ray Vaughan was an even better musician when sober.”
You can hear the cocaine effects in her voice on some of her old songs. I loved how she sounded when she was bombed, but much better to be clean, even if she never sang again.

Bonnie, Stevie and Jimmie Vaughan were, still are, tight friends. They hung out with the same crowd. Bonnie along with Jackson Browne and Stevie Wonder sang Amazing Grace at Stevie’s graveside service.
This song came out just as my co-worker’s brother started displaying interest in me.
Both of us denied to everyone that we were interested in each other, but everyone kept insisting that we were seeing each other on the sly. We weren’t in a small town, we were in the Phoenix area, but all his brothers and his friends worked at the ASU bookstore, which was a very small community.
No matter how much we denied it, everyone else saw something we didn’t. We just celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary. lol
Bonnie's first record came out in 1971. By 1986, most people considered her career to be over, but she made a huge comeback in 1989 after a stint in rehab. So huge in fact that the album "Nick of Time" bypassed everything she'd done before. She has an incredible back catalog for you to get lost in.
I was glad she finally broke through but honestly, I much prefer her earlier music. Her last album I really loved was Green Light.
She is one of the finest slide guitarists ever, bar none!! She is not country, she is BLUES!!!

Bonnie is also huge in the blues community... she played the SRV tribute with Jimmie Vaughan and other blues stars when Stevie passed. Love Me Like A Man is another great song...

Bonnie Raitt is one of the most underappreciated artists out there. A close friend introduced me to her music in the late 70s. Her music has made me laugh, dance, smile, and cry. Thank you and RIP Jim, and thank you, Bonnie.
I always thought of Bonnie Raitt as a country singer, but as it turns out, she grew up in Burbank, California, and got her start in music playing clubs/bars in Philadelphia. She's considered more of a blues/blues-rock artist than a country artist.

She has sing back up numerous blues artists' records. I really like In The Mood with John Lee Hooker. Lots of great slide guitar work on the official video. Thing Called Love is a fun song. Nick of atoms is also good.
There is a country flavor to her music. For me, I think it's because the blues and country music seem to be intertwined. Just an observation I've made in my 60+ years in this crazy world.

I have always liked her music and, while I hate to admit this, I always sort of resented that I liked her music because I thought it was country music. When I read she is from Burbank, California, it made me feel like I had permission to like her. That made me have to confront my prejudices against country music, and since then, I have been more open to different genres of music, having set aside some of my biases.
I find it interesting that this California/ New York girl looks so "country" and sings with what sounds like a Southern twang-but then, so do (Canadian) Shania Twain and (Australian) Olivia Newton-John and Keith Urban, et al.
Bonnie Raitt has such an interesting life. Born in California, she went to a Quaker boarding school in New York state, she went to Harvard University and majored in African studies. And yet I assumed she was a country girl from the South because of the sound of her music. It's always humbling to find out you've made assumptions about a person's background based on something superficial such as how they look or sound and then find out you've been ignorant and are totally wrong about who they are. Every time that happens in life, I feel like I become a little bit of a better person. I really love the style and sound of her music, and it doesn't matter ultimately what genre anyone assigns to her.

Hard to believe Bonnie (now 72) put out her first album 51 years ago. If you want to check out one of her EARLY songs, check out her cover of the Martha and the Vandellas song "You've Been in Love Too Long". "Keep this Heart in Mind" was one of her early 80s songs, but it was in 1990 when she put out "Nick of Time" that she really made a splash on mainstream radio. Her 1991 album "Luck of the Draw" sold over 7 million copies, featuring hits like this, "I Can't Make You Love Me", and "Not the Only One". Great choice for Female Friday!

Man I love Bonnie Raitt. You could fill a room with the best guitar players you can think of or a room filled with the best blues musicians and Bonnie is gonna fit right in. Every rocker, blues player etc has the utmost respect for Bonnie.
Bonnie Raitt loves the blues dipped with a little country sauce. She notably ran with the best bles artists in history and even set up a fund to support those who were truly down on their luck. B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimmie Vaughn, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, to name a few all love this woman, who also has a special guitar named for her. Her parents were celebrated performers of the stage. And her album NICK OF TIME swept the 1990 Grammy Awards when it still meant something. There were hard times to be sure. But she survived and triumphed.

My friend, Ron Thompson, who died just a year or two ago, played slide for John Lee Hooker - and he LOVED Bonnie - those two could put it DOWN on that slide! Amazing music - and often the background players, who you seldom hear about, are usually some of the most talented in the entire band even though the vocalists take home the awards etc.

I just saw Bonnie live two weeks ago. Her voice is still as stong and entertaining. Her previous song you did was "I Can't Make You Love Me". If I remember correctly Jordan you said she was one of your top women voices up there with Amy. "Nick Of Time" or "Angel From Montgomery" should be next from Bonnie.

Love Bonnie, the two songs you have listened to were from the mid 80’s when She broke out with a ton of Grammies and sold a lot of Records. Love it. My favorite is a king from the early 70’s when she was struggling, “ Angel From Montgomery “. She still performs that song in her concerts. Bonnie took about 10 years off to take care of her sick mother, after Mom passed Bonnie eased back into recording and touring. That showed character that she set her career on the side instead of just hiring someone. Bonnie is often considered one of the best slide guitarist around and often plays with the southern/Chicago Blues masters and fits right in. Good pick up Jay.

Jonny Lang is one of my favorite, seen him several times. Hope he is recovering and will be able to perform again one day.
Bonnie Raitt is and has been an amazing artist for a long time. Fell in love with her voice 30 years ago! She's also tied to one of my personal favorite events in music. On May 9, 1974, she was the headliner at the Harvard Square Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts A music critic for Rolling Stone and "The Real Paper" named Jon Landau was in attendance. The opening act was a down and almost out Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. A few days later, Landau would write possibly the best known review in rock music; "I saw rock and roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen". Bonnie was apparently one of the few artists who would have Bruce as an opening act. She's in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. Need to dig out some more of her music...

Her doing John Prine's Angel from Montgomery is a classic. She's sung and played with so many artists you can't name them all. A memorable one was with Little Feat but everyone she has played with was memorable.

Bonnie Raiit’s DAD was the late, great John Raitt. John Raitt was considered a pioneer and a legend on Broadway. He originated many iconic roles, including roles in OKLAHOMA & CAROUSEL (Both by Rodgers & Hammerstein). He was awarded with a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (for Live Theatre). So Bonnie’s got major musical DNA!!

Check out a great song from Bonnie’s “Nick of Time” comeback album, “Thing Called Love.” It was written by John Hiatt, who is a great songwriter and performer in his own right. Hiatt has the same sort of country/blues/soul/rock fusion that this song represents. He also wrote “Riding With The King,” which earned a Grammy for the cover by Eric Clapton and B.B. King (though I like Hiatt’s original performance better).

An oldie but goodie that began her career with a Warner Bros release of her self-entitled record in 1971. Check out Nick of Time and Have a Heart......just love those two songs. her voice is still great. Saw her in Virginia Beach a few years back and she had Mavis Staples on the ticket who, of course, just killed I'll Take You There. Over the years Bonnie has evolved into a pretty decent slide guitarist. Thanks for reacting.
