Neil Diamond is an American classic. He has one of those voices that you immediately know when you hear it! I'm sure everyone wants you to react to "Sweet Caroline" EVERYONE sings to that song.
I saw Neil live in concert. He came on stage at 8:15 and didn't leave for over 3 hours. When he walked off, the music kept playing, and a couple minutes later the music started for America. When he came back on, the entire audience got to their feet, and we sang along with him. The building was actually vibrating with the sound of the voices and the clapping. It was amazing.
Have to many of his Chicago concerts. The last concert was his 50th Anniversary concert,which was cut short by his diagnosis to Parkinson’s. So blessed to have been in his audience so many times. Hands sore from clapping,never sitting,singing along with every song. He gave it his all…three hours passed so quickly….always sad to see it end!🔥❤️💎

You have to have a great range in your voice to sing the US National Anthem which, I believe, is why MOST people don't sing it at public events. I LOVE Canada and all my children were born there.

The movie is more a showcase of Neil's music than anything else. Neil's a so-so actor but the music scenes more than make up for that.
I believe Lucie played his manager. His character was married to a devout Jewish woman, and he wound up falling for Lucie's character when his wife would not support his musical dream.
A song that should mean much. My grandpa and his brother came here together in 1905 from Ireland. 12 and 10 years old. His brother sent back at Eli’s Island to Ireland for he had polio. Could not come back for 5 years. My grandpa worked brick yards and was homeless for years. Sent back any extra money to Ireland. He never regretted coming here. Told me hard work and never complaining helped him be successful and raise a family. Loved this country.

Same with my paternal grandparents who came from Hungary. They met each other on the boat over to the US. My grandmother traveled ALONE at 13 years old and my grandfather did the same, he was 16 at the time. Can you imagine at that age going alone to a foreign country where you don't speak the language, didn't have much education and no job to go to? It was odd too, because when the met on that ship, it turned out they were from the same tiny village in Hungary but NEVER knew each other, because she was Catholic and he was Protestant and they didn't mix in those days. They married almost immediately after they arrived in America. They were extremely poor, both of their homes in Hungary still had dirt floors. This song ALWAYS reminds me of my Dad's parents, may they RIP along with ALL their children (3 girls and my Dad who was the "baby" of the family, he lived the longest, dying at 102 in 2020)

One lies in a grave in France. Coming back to the farm kept the shell shock at bay. Farming is very grounding. We love our country so much. My older brother fought in Vietnam. God bless America. One of my favorite Neil Diamond songs. My great-grandparents were the children of immigrants, and we were fortunate to grow up across the street from them and to hear their stories about their immigrant parents. That always made me feel closer to them and to all the immigrants this song represents.

In the audience are Sir Laurence Olivier, a very famous actor, who played Neil’s father, and the lady is Lucy Arnez, who is the daughter of Lucille Ball, the famous comedian, in The Jazz Singer. Apparently the critics didn’t like the movie and made fun of Neil Diamond’s acting, even though Neil wrote ALL the songs in the movie. He had been screen tested to play Lenny Bruce and became terrified of doing it, and dropped out. I think that was a turning point and time of great confusion for him, and when he wrote “I am I said.” Love this man to pieces.💕His live concerts are legendary and most of the band members and all of his backup singers were with him for over 30 years. He is such a good and humble man, now fighting Parkinson’s disease.

The Neil Diamond songs that aren’t really remembered today are from the film Jonathan Livingston Seagull. I wore the grooves out of that album back in the 1970s. The movie is pretty unique, as is the book it was based on, but the songs are gorgeous. Skybird is probably the most known song from that album.
One of my fave albums of all time; I am 60 and I bought the album when it first came out and still love it. I got my death metal loving son into this album, ha, and he loved it too; when he tragically passed in 2015 I had the song 'Dear Father' played at his funeral.

This IS the song that always brings me back to what it means to be American. So many of my peers in the mid 80's were die hard red, white and blue because of Lee Greenwood's "Proud to be an American" (which in its own way is very patriotic and beautiful). Not for me, 3 times in my childhood we Ieft our country to be with our dad as he protected others, that in the wake of the building of a better world out of the endless wars for 200 years prior had no way to truly defend themselves against a Soviet monster. 3 times I came back to this country from abroad to renew my love and faith in this great nation. The third time was to go into the Marine Corps to do my part. Each time I felt as though I was immigrating to the U.S. as we had been away for 4 years each of the first two times and 18 months for me the third time. As many flaws as this country has, it still has the sturdiest framework for a nation of the future and I will go to my deathbed believing that... The movie is more a showcase of Neil's music than anything else. Neil's a so-so actor but the music scenes more than make up for that.

A song that should mean much. My grandpa and his brother came here together in 1905 from Ireland. 12 and 10 years old. His brother sent back at Eli’s Island to Ireland for he had polio. Could not come back for 5 years. My grandpa worked brick yards and was homeless for years. Sent back any extra money to Ireland. He never regretted coming here. Told me hard work and never complaining helped him be successful and raise a family. Loved this country.
I'm of Scots Irish Heritage and adored my family, my children are now 7th generation Pennsylvanians. They gave me so much and truly created the person that I am today. I still tend their graves. God Bless you! 😁
Same with my paternal grandparents who came from Hungary. They met each other on the boat over to the US. My grandmother traveled ALONE at 13 years old and my grandfather did the same, he was 16 at the time. Can you imagine at that age going alone to a foreign country where you don't speak the language, didn't have much education and no job to go to? It was odd too, because when the met on that ship, it turned out they were from the same tiny village in Hungary but NEVER knew each other, because she was Catholic and he was Protestant and they didn't mix in those days. They married almost immediately after they arrived in America. They were extremely poor, both of their homes in Hungary still had dirt floors. This song ALWAYS reminds me of my Dad's parents, may they RIP along with ALL their children (3 girls and my Dad who was the "baby" of the family, he lived the longest, dying at 102 in 2020)

@jom7604 Irish, also settled in rural PA and, over generations, owned thousands of acres to farm and sustain us. Three sons of the 1940's generation fought fascism in Europe. One lies in a grave in France. Coming back to the farm kept the shell shock at bay. Farming is very grounding. We love our country so much. My older brother fought in Vietnam. God bless America. Let's keep moving forward to a more perfect union. ❤

I just happened to see Neil Diamond in concert in 1981 after he put out this album (my first live concert EVER, with my parents), and it/he was spectacular. I would love to hear you react to "Holly Holy" in the near future. It's my favorite song of his. If not that, then "Solitary Man" or "Cherry, Cherry", which came off his breakout album in 1966. This song, "America" was off the soundtrack to the movie "The Jazz Singer", which Neil also starred in.

If you've never seen it, I highly recommend the movie "The Jazz Singer". The 2 people this video kept focusing on in the audience were Lucy Arnaz and Sir Lawrence Olivier, who co-starred as his girlfriend, and father, respectively.

I had already seen Little River Band in concert at the outdoor amphitheater Ravinia in suburban Chicago three years earlier for my first concert. My first non-parent-accompanied concert was Billy Joel in 1983.
“Solitary Man”, “Cherry, Cherry”, “Holly Holy”, “Cracklin’ Rosie”, “Song Sung Blue” & I bet you’ve heard “Sweet Caroline”. His 1st two live LP’s “Gold” & “Hot August Night” (there’s also a Hot August Night ll) are great listening.

One of my favorite Neil Diamond songs. My great-grandparents were the children of immigrants, and we were fortunate to grow up across the street from them and to hear their stories about their immigrant parents. That always made me feel closer to them and to all the immigrants this song represents.
My nana came to Canada in the middle of WWI wearing her life jacket the whole trip. My father came in the 50’s after WWII from England.

In the audience are Sir Laurence Olivier, a very famous actor, who played Neil’s father, and the lady is Lucy Arnez, who is the daughter of Lucille Ball, the famous comedian, in The Jazz Singer. Apparently the critics didn’t like the movie and made fun of Neil Diamond’s acting, even though Neil wrote ALL the songs in the movie. He had been screen tested to play Lenny Bruce and became terrified of doing it, and dropped out. I think that was a turning point and time of great confusion for him, and when he wrote “I am I said.” Love this man to pieces.💕His live concerts are legendary and most of the band members and all of his backup singers were with him for over 30 years. He is such a good and humble man, now fighting Parkinson’s disease.

The two actors that were shown in the audience are Lucy Arnaz, and Laurence Olivier , who is one of the greatest actors ever. Olivier played Neil's father and I believe Lucy was either the wife or girlfriend. If you watch the shots of the father closely you can see that he is skeptical at first of his sons ability ,and as he sees the crowd respond he joins in.

Neil Diamond is so great. He was my dad’s favorite artist. Hard for me to listen to him without thinking of my dad. He’s got a lot of great songs to check out. Songs like Sweet Caroline, I am I said, Cherry Cherry, Make you feel my love, If I don’t see you again are just a few of his great songs. He also does great Christmas songs that he got permission from his grandma to do since he was Jewish and didn’t celebrate Christmas. Shows the kind of man he is. Respected his grandma so much.

Neil’s father player a Jewish cantor and wanted Neil to follow in his footsteps! This was the first time seeing him perform.

The Neil Diamond songs that aren’t really remembered today are from the film Jonathan Livingston Seagull. I wore the grooves out of that album back in the 1970s. The movie is pretty unique, as is the book it was based on, but the songs are gorgeous. Skybird is probably the most known song from that album.
One of my fave albums of all time; I am 60 and I bought the album when it first came out and still love it. I got my death metal loving son into this album, ha, and he loved it too; when he tragically passed in 2015 I had the song 'Dear Father' played at his funeral.

I grew up listening to this album. Neil Diamond’s The Jazz Singer was my mother’s favorite album. It is the soundtrack of the movie.
This IS the song that always brings me back to what it means to be American. So many of my peers in the mid 80's were die hard red, white and blue because of Lee Greenwood's "Proud to be an American" (which in its own way is very patriotic and beautiful). Not for me, 3 times in my childhood we Ieft our country to be with our dad as he protected others, that in the wake of the building of a better world out of the endless wars for 200 years prior had no way to truly defend themselves against a Soviet monster. 3 times I came back to this country from abroad to renew my love and faith in this great nation. The third time was to go into the Marine Corps to do my part. Each time I felt as though I was immigrating to the U.S. as we had been away for 4 years each of the first two times and 18 months for me the third time. As many flaws as this country has, it still has the sturdiest framework for a nation of the future and I will go to my deathbed believing that... Thank you Neil for such a beautiful dedication to this nation...

This song is from the movie The Jazz singer. I was raised on country, in my teens I switched to rock. Favorite group. The Bee Gees. My kids were raised on several different genres. Today to hear their music they listen to and to hear such a mix is a good feeling. They remember songs from when they were little. Neil Diamond is a favorite of theirs. My son invited me to a Neil Diamond concert, when he was in his early 20’s. Today he’s 43 and still listens to a huge variety of music. Expose your children to the many varieties of music and they grow up with an appreciation of music. I love watching you two enjoy different genres of music, music I grew up on. Thank you!
