John was very young when he wrote this. Like early 20s. He was sitting in an airport and feeling bad about being away. So he did what songwriters do. He poured his emotion into a song. John had such a gift for doing that and sometimes very quickly. He said in an interview once that he was taking one last ski run for the day and was thinking about his wife. He wrote Annie's Song on the lift ride up the mountain. He got off the lift desperately looking for something to write with. Another great talent we lost to a plane crash.

She had a voice like no other‐- I loved it. She had a very successful career apart from The Mamas and the Papas too. I especially identified with her song "Make Your Own Kind of Music". I was 9 years old when it came out and it was encouraging people to have the courage to be themselves and not be beaten into conformity. She didn't really fit the Sixties' "mold" of blonde, blue-eyed and skinny, so she (like Janis Joplin) relied on her talent, personality and uniqueness. We lost both of them way too soon, but they will never be forgotten. Thank you, Cass.

John Henry Deutschendorf Jr. (Denver) grew up a military brat as did I. His Dad was a decorated Air Force pilot who moved a lot for his career and spent much time away from his family - saying "goodbye" is ingrained in our lives. I was eight or nine when I first heard the Peter Paul and Mary version of John's song (about the time my Dad came home from serving in the Army in South Vietnam). It always touches my heart when I hear it performed and never more so than listening to this sublime version with Cass Elliot. Thanks for posting your sweet reaction.

A wee bit of context for Mama Cass' comments about colleges and voting - this was near the last few years of the Vietnam War, and protests were happening all over, especially at colleges. The Kent State shootings (sung about in the song, Ohio, by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young) had happened in 1970. The country was in upheaval.

Britt, it's nice to see another generation discover John's music. I was in HS in 1972 and very into folk music when he burst onto the scene as a singer / songwriter with this song which was made popular with Peter, Paul & Mary. John Denver was an 'old soul' who created such beautiful music that often focused on love and nature. He didn't need a big band or lots of backup singers...just his guitar. I saw him in concert in the early 80s and he had a small ~10 piece orchestra on stage for the first couple of songs, then he dismissed them and brought a bar stool on stage, and he sat there for the next 2 hours playing with nothing but his guitar. I bought all of his albums as soon as they were released for years until he passed in 1997. // If you are interested in listening to a nice selection of his greatest hits, try his 'Wildlife Concert' that was recorded in front of a live audience in 1995. Enjoy !!

You just need to think of this version of Johns song as a wave, the chorus with Cass Elliot just washes your day away replacing it with peace, beauty and love. Like you're on a beach at sunset with the waves at your feet, nothing else matters but you and that moment. The world just stops to let you catch your breath.
It's just a perfect rendition of an already amazing song, and I'm glad the internet preserves it forever 🖖😎

Cass Elliot was Mama Cass of the Mama's and Papa's, a group that had incredible harmony and some blockbuster hits. Think of California Dreaming, Monday Monday, I Saw Her Again, Words of Love (featuring Mama Cass), Creeque Alley (a musical history of the group), In Crowd, Dream a Little Dream of Me (featuring Mama Cass), and the list goes on! Mama Cass could really belt a song. A lot of sites will say she died of choking on a sandwich. That is false. She died from a heart attack at the age of 32 in 1974. RIP, Cass!
Interesting thing about the Mamas and the Papas, there are several songs I had heard forever, and it suddenly occurred to me that the beat was burlesque! I Call Your Name is one example.

Great reaction. Britt!! I really wish they did a whole album together. They compliment each other perfectly. So perfectly that, like you said, it seemed like it was one voice singing..until she went higher! Cass and John had a similar sense humor and you can tell really respected each other immensely!! I loved her little mistake, if you caught it, when she first sings...she had to hesitate and to figure the lyric!! So real :) I also loved how when John said for everyone to join in and sing along, not one person did, because they wanted to hear THEM!!! :)

I thought it was very interesting that right after she commented that people are saying the same thing today that they were in the 70s, Cass says “it’s not important who you vote for, vote for who you believe in.”
You will never hear someone say that today. Nowadays, celebrities make a point of telling people who to vote for, and how you’re a terrible person if you don’t.

John Denver was a great singer/songwriter and had loads of great songs. He sounded just as good live (if not better) than the studio version. He was more folk than country. He was also into the environment etc in a big way long before others even thought of it.

    • @KatzenjammerKid61

He was more Western influenced than folk on the album "Farewell Andromeda". It's exactly the same style of music the Eagles, Poco and Pure Prairie League would write and perform. Plus, I think he loved to poke fun at his cornpone loving side in some of his pure country songs - which Nashville apparently didn't like.
