John Denver is the only person to have two of his songs recognized as official state songs. This one, “ Take Me Home Country Roads” is the official state song of West Virginia and “Rocky Mountain High” holds the same distinction for Colorado.
As well as testify about rock lyrics to congress along with Twisted Sister, Frank Zappa. - "An artist, I am opposed to any kind of a rating system, voluntarily or otherwise," he states. Denver explains that his song "Rocky Mountain High" has been misinterpreted as being about drug use, an example of how the listening experience varies by individual.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
The Nitty Gritty Dirt band had an enthusiastic following but didn't get the air time many thought it should. I don't know that you can find a video of the band but it is worth tracking down an album for a listen.
The video you just watched was recorded at the 1985 Farm Aid concert in Champaign, Illinois. For adventurous souls across the nation, in the next few weeks the county history museum will present an exhibit of that concert.
Ever heard of Ray Charles? Georgia and Vermont.
So does the Osborne Brothers....Kentucky and Tennessee both have designated one of their songs as official state songs.
Actually Stephen Foster has two state songs.
My sister’s college roommate met him out camping, their family’s hung out that evening by the fire and just sang songs. She said he was just as sincerely friendly in real life as he seemed on tv.
Wow! That is QUITE the memory!🏕🎙🎶
My ex-husband was a Corporate Pilot, and met him at an airport while waiting for the executives to return for their flight. John Denver of course was an aviation fanatic. My ex said they talked for quite awhile until John's flight was ready, and that yes, he was just as nice as he seemed onstage
Through a mutual acquaintance John Denver joined us for a family dinner at our home while on the road and yes, despite being a huge celebrity at the time, he was a wonderful guest. I was just a youngster at the time but he still impressed me as a truly decent, peaceful human being.
You need to react to Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Fishin in the Dark
Prolific songwriter who died in private plane crash. Iconic songs by this master. One hit after the other. The best is Annie's Song a beautiful song
Annie’s Song; Sunshine on My Shoulders; Rocky Mountain High; such beautiful songs!!! He was a national treasure. ❤RIP
Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. aka John Denver was born in Roswell, NM and grew up in a military family. We saw him in early 1970s on the capital lawn in Charleston, WV where he sang this song multiple times. It was a free concert to honor the state. John has a very interesting biography as musical geniuses often have.
Brit, I wish you had listened to the studio version. Even if you aren't from WV, it's very emotional to hear. Even if you don't react to it, listen to the studio version on your own to experience it for yourself. ☺🤎
These live versions do NOT do the songs or the artists justice..
This song came on the radio when I was head back to Colorado after being gone for nearly 2 years and had not seen my wife in a year. I was taking care of my Dad until he past. I was in beautiful valley in Montana with snow capped mountains I was driving towards. This hardened constrution worker burst into tears with, sadness, relief, joy of heading home and the beauty of where I was at. That was over 7 years ago and when ever I hear it again I'm right back there with a begining of a tear.
Peace to you and your good lady, brother. Be well.
You gotta do Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s Fishin’ In The Dark. It’s a country standard and is referenced in the lyrics of so many other country songs. It was an instant classic and remains one. ♥️🇺🇸
I grew up listening to him. Love his music, and was fortunate to see him twice in concert as a teenager in the 70s.
John was so good and humble. His voice and guitar is all you need.He had such a great sound when he sang!.
John and Mama Cass sing one together and it is great. Can't think of it off-hand.
John Denver R.I.P.
I live in Colorado, he is nothing less then an angel!!!!
RIP John Denver
This is the first song I learned to play on guitar back in 1974 and I still play some of JD's music to this day.😀
One of his most beautiful songs is Calypso. Even if you listen to it on your own it's just a magical song to listen to.
John Denver was a treasure. Whenever I want to mentally escape the hustle and bustle of the busy city, I turn on a John Denver song.
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's big hit was Mr. Bojangles.
Yes. One of Jerry Jeff Walkers best songs.
Fishin' in the Dark among others.
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is wonderful! You could listen to: "Fishing in the Dark", their version of "Mr Bojangles", "Long Hard Road", or "Dance Little Jean". They've got a good, clean, country/rock sound.
Also, on the Live Two Five album (1991-ish), Rippln Water is beautiful and just carries you away.
John's actually from Roswell, New Mexico....
John has so many great songs but as a kid my absolute favorite was a song named ( Grandma's Feather Bed) if you want a smile on your face please listen to that song . 50 years later it still puts a smile on my face.
I am from West Virginia and the first time I heard this song was in 1971 while I was serving in the US Army overseas
There was a period in the 70's when John Denver was one of the biggest stars out there. His songs were all over the radio, he was in the Oh God movies and on The Muppets Show. He was popular across genres.
I remember him on Sesame Street singing Grandma's Feather Bed with the Muppets!
It's really simple. John Denver transports me to a time and place where things were just easier. RIP to a great performer who didn't realize it back then.
Listen to “Fishin in the dark” by Nitty gritty dirt band, and you won’t forget them
John Denver's song Sunshine on my shoulders makes me feel good even when it's nasty outside.
One of my earlier memories is traveling home with my family after visiting my uncle in Texas. We were closer to home than not and this song came on the radio and we all sang along. Doesn’t sound all that impactful I suppose but the song always takes me back to a more innocent time of togetherness. John Denver was a treasure.
I think you will love all the John Denver songs that you get a chance to react to. This was an exciting reaction to see I attended that concert in 1985. It was a once-in-a-lifetime awesome event.
Thanks a lot for another reaction to one of my absolute favorite male singers of all time. I love it 🙂 Much love from Norway ♥♥♥♥♥
You like live performances so one of your next John Denver songs need to be with Mama Cass. “Leaving on a Jet Plane.”
If you want to hear him sing a comedic song try “Forest Lawn” about being buried in an expensive cemetery.
Or the hilarious song called “Toledo Ohio” (may be entitled “Saturday night in Toledo Ohio”) which got him in trouble with Ohioans.
To hear about the peace of life try listening to “Poems and Prayers and Promises”.
Another one of John Denver's funny songs is "Grandma's Feather Bed".😂
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is wonderful Country Rock Music group that’s been around since mid 1960’s. Top songs to listen to -
Mr. Bojangles (also listen to Sammy Davis Jr.’s version)
Will the Circle be Unbroken
Dance Little Jean
Long Hard Road
Fishin’ in the Dark
I’d even recommend listening to the entire 1972 album Will the Circle be Unbroken. The great Country Legends that they were able to convince to collaborate on it is phenomenal.
We JUST MOVED to COLORADO recently - it is stunningly beautiful and the best place we've ever lived!
John Denver was my teenage crush . I had it Real Bad for this guy . ❤️
For a really country sounding song listen to “Thank God I’m A Country Boy.” Not real long but it will get you moving.
If you enjoyed this you really need to check out The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Try, Fishin in the Dark, Bayou Jubilie (Sally was a goodun), American Dream or Dance Little Jean.
This song is from an early part of his career. He started out in folk groups and then went out on his own. This song was co-written by Denver and Bill and Taffy Danoff and first performed it at a famous club in D.C., The Cellar Door. After recording it the song climbed the charts slowly but eventually hit #1.
Note John Denver wasn't from Colorado originally. He was an Army brat whose family lived in AZ, TX, AL. His song "Rocky Mountain High" talks about a man "born in the summer of his 27th year, coming home to a place he'd never been before". He and some friends went up in the Rockies on a cloudless night to watch the Perseid Meteor Shower and he fell in love with Colorado and moved to Aspen.
I'm from Dub V, and in the last week have been enjoying your reactions as I've roamed through England, Switzerland, Abu Dhabi, and up late now in Australia.
Haven't lived full-time in my home state in at least a dozen years. But this is our hymn. People all over the world adore it, which puts a big smile on my face every time I catch those chords on the wind.
I carry an expired WV driver's license as a keep-sacred and a hall pass to parade up to the mic when someone cues it on karaoke.
And though my travelling life fulfills me in all the best ways, the line, "And driving down the road, I get a feeling that I should have been home yesterday... YESTERDAY!", gets me in the feels every. single. time.
The porch light's always on - be good to have you visit anytime, and thanks so much for creating these with all this fun and kindness.
The song "Thank god I'm a country boy" is a fun song from John Denver. BONUS the group Home Free does a cover of the same song and it is very good.
John did a couple TV specials with The Muppets! Their Christmas album is funtastic.😊
I prefer the studio version of this song. His voice is more aged here.
Mr. Bojangles is a Nitty Gritty tune you'd like. Their biggest hit... a lovely ballad about the legendary icon of soft-shoe and tap dancing.
My dear late friend Pete Huttlinger played guitar in John Denver’s band for a few years
Simply one of the best singer/songwriters ever that almost everybody in the world knows the words to at least one of his songs.
Forever Country Then & Now This is a must see
Miss John So Much 💔😭
John is not from Colorado he moved to Aspen when became famous his father was military so they moved all over he spent part of his childhood in Ft Worth Tx
Huge in the 1970s, even did a movie with God. Backlash from other country music performers. Johnny Cash, Roger Miller & Glen Campbell on his show for support of him. Good to be Back Home Again is great, Country Boy with those above stars.
Love Love Love this song
I remember when W. Va. had nothing but country roads.
One of my all time favorite songs. Imagine 100 soldiers in South Korea standing up and singing this together because it captured precisely how much we missed home. Not a dry eye in the house.
I was a student down at the UIUC when Farm Aid took place. I heard it all.
Never really noticed but in that thumb pic of John Denver he really looks like Steve 'Krikey' Irwin
SONG# COUNTRY BOY, BY JOHN DENVER.
Please do Home Free's cover of this. It took them 5yrs to get it just right, where it would do John's song justice & be respectful of this iconic piece.
His very first hit. Although he wrote "Leaving on a Jet Plane" was a hit for Peter, Paul and Mary before anyone knew who he was having written that.
You’ll love Annie’s Song and Perhaps Love (with Pavarotti) - both beyond romantic.❤
You have got to react to Artists Then Now And Forever Country. You will enjoy it so much recognizing the different country singers you have reacted to and there is some who will have no clue who they are but willing to bet you will be ready to dive into more country music after hearing this mix of Country Roads Take Me Home and I Will Always Love You. Love your reactions!
I've been traveling country roads for all of my 65 years, and I can't think of anything finer! Great song! RIP, John!
I've just been watching your reactions to John Denver and have enjoyed them greatly. I grew up listening to John Denver. Your responses are so delightful. They bring back so many memories and feelings and fill up this old man's heart that I had to share you with my wife of 52 years and subscribe to your channel. Don't ever lose your grace and that beautiful smile. We love you. Keep it up.
I'm not ashamed as grown man and former Marine to admit this song makes me cry. My Mother's family is from Clarksburg W Va. Old country Italians.....the Spatafores. Rosie had the country store. Joe always had a smile and my Uncle Sam always ready to take me fishing or spend time with me in the early 70s when I was a little kid. The adults playing canasta until 3am in the morning. That circle of love I will never forget and those people will be in my memory forever until they put me in the ground.
Nitty Gritty is a great band
He was also a pretty good actor. He was in a hilarious movie called Oh, God! and, if I recall correctly, he played a grocer who started to hear God talking to him. God was played by George Burns and John Denver's wife was played by Teri Garr. It was a very funny, wholesome movie. A favorite of my childhood.
My two favorite John Denver songs are Lady, and Leavin on a Jet plane, especially love this second version with Cass Elliot duet .
Great, simple happy song
I was twice in Colorado in USAF technical courses. Absolutely gorgeous there!
Here is a song that is too short and it's a Christmas song but I think you could sing it anytime, John Denver's song Aspenglow, I can listen to this song on repeat so many times 🙏
You might like Johns song called, Songs Of. I have to hit repeat at least 3 times, everytime it comes around! And agree Aspenglow should be listened at any time of the year.
@@paulineh4019 wow I love it, songs of the way, the early Christians were hunted so they called following Christ " the way" I smile brightly 🌻
I love this song!
If you've never heard of the Nitty Gritty Dirt band you need to check out "Mr. Bojangles" it is there epitomes' song.
John Denver was born in New Mexico but had an affinity for Colorado and all things pastoral, bucolic or ''country''.
I saw Denver way back in 1974. I was into hard rock back then. I've been to see in concert most any style of music. JOHN Denvers concert was to this day the best concert I ever saw.
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is playing here in Clear Lake IA on Thursday!!
This would make a great square dance song!
Farm-Aid was amazing and should be on a steaming channel.
Love watching your reactions and your also beautiful❤❤❤❤
Nitty gritty dirt band. Fishin in the dark Great song. React to it.. you’ll love it
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band did a great cover of The House at Pooh Corner.
Beautiful reaction love john. Please do ' Thank God Im a Country Boy'
So many better places to ski than the stuck up Aspen slopes. John Denver was just a classic musician who truly sang from the heart!
John Was the number one singer in the world for 5 straight years...
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band had a lot of great songs. Try "House at Pooh Corner", "Mr. Bojangles", or "Bless the broken road"...
Gotta check out "fishing in the dark". Peace, Love!!
Good song good reaction
Denver's death has always intrigued me. He was flying his own home built aircraft. Officially he had trouble switching fuel tanks, but he was flying illegally after a few dui arrests.
"Thank God I'm A Country Boy" - the only "country" song on my list! And if you need to relax and just smile......"Sunshne On My Shoulders". Love your reactions - thank you for sharing John - my youth! - with us.
♥
Nitty gritty dirt band would be amongst the top 10 country bands of all time , fishing in the dark would have to be one of my top 10 songs
I love your reaction ♥️❤️
Great Reaction 👍🙏👣
Check out John live as he sings “Bells of Rhymney”. His voice and twelve string skills are amazing.
My daddy used to play this song on his guitar and sing it with me and my two sisters when we were little. He passed away when I was 13 years old and every time I hear this song, it takes me back to those bittersweet memories. 🥺
You HAVE to react to Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Dance Little Jean". It will delight you.
John wasn't from Colorado, but he made it his home. There are many monuments dedicated to him. His song "ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH" is one of a few songs named the un-official state song
Rocky Mountain High is one of 2 official Colorado State songs. Also Country Roads is the Official State song of West Virginia. So one artist with TWO Official State songs...not bad hey!
@@paulineh4019 unrelated to this subject, but, my Moms name was/is Pauline
Now you should listen to some Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (NGDB) - Fishin’ in the Dark, Partners Brothers and Friend, Sharecroppers Dream, Mr. Bojangles…. Deep catalogue of wonderful hits.
John Denver wrote the song, but if you want to hear it sang with emotion search for Jonathan Antoine ( sung during covid pandemic)
I promise you'll love love it even more
RIP John Denver, voice of pure honey
this is a good song before i knew him as a musician i knew him as an actor in OH GOD with george burns
for Nitty gritty dirt band you should listen to Fishing in the Dark its not about fishing
Nitty gritty dirtband still around they do festivals things like that all the time
If you like John Denver's voice you need to listen to Annie's Song. He wrote the song for his first wife. It really is a pretty song.
