There was a lot of groups back then both black & white who the music industry didn’t want to show their faces because of how they sounded. What most of us forget is that most of this soul music came from black people who never got the credit they deserved for writing such amazing songs. When you look into the back grounds of these groups they all came from a place that heard songs originally sang in Juke Joints like Jerry Lee Lewis. I’m so glad times changed & now people don’t have to hide I just wish that the people who sang songs originally are given the credit that’s properly deserved & earned.

Suddenly I just now burst into tears, remembering my late husband taking me to see this guy singing his heart out. It was two days before giving birth to our only child, a daughter in 1970. The tears? Well he’s gone now after being soulmates for 50+ years, my daughter just tested positive for Covid19 and I can’t go to her, being very disabled. But it will all be ok, with time. Goddam!! What an incredible performance!

I was fortunate to have caught Three Dog Night live 3 times in the space of a couple of months when they reformed for a brief period in the early 1980s and went out to play small venues. It was in northeast Ohio at both the Akron Agora and the Cleveland Agora. They really sounded fantastic and played all their hits - this despite singer Chuck Negron's continuing descent into an extremely harrowing years-long battle with heroin addiction that probably none of us knew about at the time. Then at around 3/4 of the way through their set, Cory Wells did this song, and it was the hands-down show-stopper EVERY TIME. He had us all up on our feet as he did his maniacal "HOLD HER, SQUEEZE HER, NEVER LEAVE HER, YOU GOT TA, YOU GOT TA, YOU GOT TA TRY, TRY, TRY, ...." jumping up and down like a soulful madman while Mike Alsup delivered his superbly tasteful lead electric guitar lines. They must have played this for at least 8 minutes every time. We went WILD!

There are recordings of this song as far back as the REAL vocal original by Bing Crosby in 1933, and by everyone from Ruth Etting, Frank Sinatra, and Little Miss Cornshucks, to The Platters, Frankie Avalon, Aretha Franklin, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Otis Redding, Ella Fitzgerald, and on and on, As recent as a performance by Chang Po Ching on 'The Voice' in 2018.

Always loved 3dognight, particularly this song....paying homage to the late great Otis Redding! No one did better than Otis, especially live, but, this guy here came close! And uou know he must've seen Otis perform this someplace bc he did his moves PERFECTLY, I mean, wow! You should pay homage to Otis by reacting to his ORIGINAL version or maybe do "I'VE BEEN LOVING YOU TOO LONG"! Love your reactions...I find myself laughing out of no where, not at you, but with you. Keep on keeping on, brother!♡
