I know so many of you are with me thinking of Duckie from the movie "PRETTY IN PINK" lip syncing this song. I really want them to react to this movie. Jay, don't judge the movie based on its name. It's soo good and deep in ways. Starring Molly Ringwald, Jon Cryer (Charlie Sheen's brother in the show 2 and a half men) and Andrew McCarthy. ❤️
And Aretha. My generation had the best. I do remember feeling so sad when I heard he died. Otis actually recorded Respect first and it was a good seller for him. But when Aretha recorded it, he made the statement that the song belonged to her now. Miss them both. 😊🇨🇦
There are some modern pop singers that can sing. I love this song. I am just 30 though. I didn't start listening to Motown music until high school . I had heard some Motown music as a kid.
I can honestly say that Otis Redding is one of only a select few artists that I love everything they did. Honestly, I’ve never heard a bad Otis song and he was the first singer that I absolutely could not get enough of. Sam Cooke is amazing as well and I always turn it up when they come on! Percy Sledge gets an honorable mention here too, but Otis’s voice makes clothes fall off!! You could go on and on about how great R & B or soul is today, and it would fall on my deaf ears. Otis IS soul music… there will never be another like him.
Oh, this is so good. Otis Redding's performance at the Monterey Pop festival was as groundbreaking as Janis's and Jimi's. The live version is incredibly powerful! "I've Been Loving You Too Long," "These Arms of Mine," and "Hard To Handle," are other great choices.
There will never be another Otis Redding… simply food for your soul. Lots of great artists of classic soul. Percy Sledge Jay!!! When a Man Loves a Woman. Otis is just on a different level, never to be touched. Sam Cooke is close. Always wondered what music would’ve developed if he and Sam had lived to an older age. Tragic.
This is what I heard when I was a kid... The organ music you hear in so many '60s and '70s songs was one of the protests used by the hippies (young people) against the Establishment (old folks who were sending young men to war). I had been told that up until that time there was no organ music in modern music (hippies) it was only for church music (Establishment). I have always believed that was true, I still believe it.
Otis Redding!!! Love his voice and style. "Sittin' On the Dock of the Bay" is one of my all-time favorite songs. "Try A Little Tenderness" is a terrific performance. Love, love, love him.
Otis is the man, phenomenal sound. Amazing song. As Duckie from 80s Pretty in Pink movie would say, "this is a very great tone, my mother would sing this to me. This is Otis, I love Otis". Duckies' Dance/Lipsync Scene (Try A Little Tenderness) is soooo awesome, fun, I love it. First thing I think of now when I hear it, eccept for the soulful sound that melts ya. Thanx so much, stay groovy, Peace
Omg YES! This song is an absolute classic! It’s also in one of my favorite scenes from the John Hughes film Pretty In Pink. Hoping you’ll react to that on your movie channel one day, I know you’ll love it.
Three Dog Night did a great cover and Steppenwolf covered this song amazingly , with a different arrangement Otis Redding's biggest hit is Dock of the Bay

One of the great soul singers. Janis Joplin loved his performance and style and was influenced by him. They crossed paths at the Monterey Pop festival in 1967. His performance there is worth watching. Interesting that Sitting by the Dock of the Bay became a hit after his tragic death in plane crash.
Oh yeah, you can definitely hear Otis' influence when listening to Janis. I wonder one thing though.... "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" was actually unfinished. The whistling was used by Otis because he hadn't written the last verse. If he hadn't died.... would he have left it alone or would there be another verse? I personally love the way it turned out but if he'd finished it, we'd never have known about the whistling part. Sorry to ramble, been a long day and I'm tired lol
@ Jennifer Bunn. Otis considered the song "unfinished" because he hadn't recorded a version he wanted to release. The majority of the lyrics were written by Steve Cropper based on suggestions from Otis. Steve was never going to write another verse. The whistling was just something spontaneous that Otis dropped in.
If you want to see a great performance of "Try a little Tenderness" Watch Otis do the "Live from London" version, on video. Its amazing. You guys are hitting my 60's vibes. Otis died when I was about 6 and I bawled my eyes out. That man was so good and so beloved. For me, living with teenage siblings, I was exposed to music since birth. The first record I asked for ,at 5, was The Box Tops "The Letter". My cat is named Alex after Alex Chilton. Gladys Knight was my favorite female singer, then The Shangri-las and later Janice. I envy being able to hear it for the first time. Enjoy.
Now you know why Janis was so in love with Otis and emulated his style with NA NA'S and certain growls not to mention stage presence truly truly truly one of the greatest entertainers ever and a national treasure!!!
The old versions are OK, but those old recordings are so dull compared to Otis Redding's arrangement. He breathed fresh life into an old stale song. And every version since Otis has him to thank. I particularly like the version by the Commitments, which is mostly a straight rip-off of Otis's version, but they do include some girl backup singers, which is a great addition.

One of the most amazing things about Otis Redding is that he was only in his 20s when he was singing this, yet his voice has the soul of a much older man and it just hits you in every song he does. Him getting to the part you loved toward the end...if a person doesn't love that, you need to check your pulse. I highly recommend "These Arms of Mine," "Mr. Pitiful" and "Can't Turn You Loose." But as many have said, you can't go wrong with anything by Otis Redding who was taken from us far too young.
Otis' performance of "I''ve Been Loving You Too Long" at the Monterey Jazz Festival is a must listen...one of the best performances of all time. You've watched a Janice Performance from that very festival.
One of the greatest singers and lost to us entirely too soon. These Arms of Mine and Love Man are on the Dirty Dancing movie soundtrack. For a couple of faster songs, Mr. Pitful and Shake, especially the live performance from Monterey Pop Festival are excellent. Watch a live performance if you get a chance so you can see his style and how much energy he poured into what he did.
Otis Redding's live performance of "I've Been Loving You (Too Long)" from the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival is perhaps his seminal live performance. Watch that video and you'll also see that he has not only a great singer, but a great performer as well.
This is actually your four Otis reaction. You've done "Sittin' On the Dock of the Bay", "I've Been Loving You Too Long", and "Merry Christmas Baby". Bit of Otis Trivia.... Everyone knows Aretha Franklin for "Respect", which became one of her signature songs. But that song was written and originally recorded by Otis Redding. (Of course, Aretha had to flip a few pronouns around to make it work for her.) Oh, and you also might remember that one line of this song was sung by Donkey in Shrek.
Love this song...great reaction you two 😁 You should check out Duckie's (Jon Cryer - the same guy from 2 and a half men) lip sync to this song in the 1986 John Hughes written and produced film (also with Molly Ringwald - from 16 candles and The Breakfast Club) called 'Pretty In Pink"....
Recorded in 1966, this became Otis's signature song and was his biggest seller. Redding didn't want to record this as his idol Sam Cook had done a version in 1964 and he felt it would be disrespectful. After pressure from Stax records executive, he recorded it, with the pleading vocals he assumed wouldn't be released. He was backed by Booker T and the MGs on this tune and it became a massive hit. 🎶🎶🎶 This song has been covered by Frank, Mel snd Bing. Also more recent 3 Dog Night. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️ 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
He wrote I can't turn you loose, sung by everybody including the blues bothers, He wrote Respect Aretha took that to the moon. In the movie the Blues brothers most of that band was his band in real life.
Otis Redding to ME and MINE is a top 25 voice in music. He had a velvet smooth Smokey quality to his hits. An the fact he died so young we missed a good 25+ years of his work it is a damn shame. @Rob Squad you both did not hear this already, but glad you did not so we could enjoy those faces when you heard this :)
This calls to mind a movie I'd love to see a reaction for ... The Commitments. It's about an Irish soul band that did a really nice cover of this song.
After reacting to this you really must watch and react to the movie "The Commitments " it is full of great music and great voices. Particularly that of 16 year old Andrew Strong. You will be stunned at the sounds coming from that boy's mouth. That boy has soul. It's also a very funny movie. By the way, if Otis were alive and in his prime today, JayZ and Kanye wouldn't even be on the same plane of existence.
As a young man of the sixties, I felt my passions and feelings expressed by the soul singers of that era. Otis was one of the best and my personal favorite. I wept when I heard of his accidental death.
Otis singing this song live at the Monterey Pop festival is probably the greatest performance in the history of R and B . He gives every bit of his being to that crowd . Out of breath in-between songs, he let it all out . Mind-blowing is an understatement. A must hear ( and see ) for anyone who loves music.
This song is one of many songs featured in PRETTY IN PINK, a movie that was very popular in 1986. That movie would be an excellent one for you guys to watch on your movie channel.
There’s an iconic live performance of this, from the Monterey Pop Festival. Kids- I was at that show! I was standing directly beneath where he stood on stage! The man was totally electric!
guys there is a scene in a movie called "pretty in pink" with this song. the movie is by the same director as breakfast club and ferris bueller and i think amber Will love that movie
Otis absolutely killed it when he did this song in concert, often at the end. And when you thought it was over he and his band would come back with a chaser of this. He put out a lot of great music in too short a period of time. Check out "Respect" (which he wrote) and "I can't turn You Loose."
The version of this song, recorded by The Commitments, is perhaps one of the greatest covers ever! Highly recommend! (And Amber will love it because there's lots of real musical instruments playing too!)
Otis was raw pure talent and he always brought passion and soul ... just like Amber said!! He was an amazing gift 🎁🙏 and I absolutely love this song!! The build up toward the end is fire!! Thank you for making me smile with your reactions!! ❤️ @RobSquadReactions
You owe it to yourselves to watch Otis Redding's Monterey Pop Festival performance of this song. You also owe it to yourselves to watch Three Dog Night's version of this song with the late Cory Wells on lead vocal.
Jordan, Rappers constantly sample Soul Artists. If you wanna hear some famous Rap song samples listen to: “Labi Siffre - I Got The…” & “Isley Brothers - Between the Sheets”
Released in 67” 45 yrs before sampled - goes to prove the original always the very best !! Got the LP “Otis live in Europe “ with Try a little tenderness “ the horns organ and his voice comes over so much deeper You can’t beat Quality RIP Otis
I was really hoping this would be the live version from the Monterrey Pop Festival. Go find it. It’s 1000x better than this version. Which is unbelievable. But it is.
Listening to this, I'm remembering the scene from "Pretty in Pink" with Duckie dancing to this song and the movie "The Commitments" about a group of Irish singers who wanted to emulate American Black bands and artists. Time to spice up your movies.
One of the best voices in music. The build up with this song gives me chills. Also check out the movie PRETTY IN PINK. The character Duckie does a great lip synch version of this in a record store - Iconic moment.
Otis is THE soul voice. He was taken from the world far too early. I saw him in London when I was a young teenage & was blown away by his energetic performance.

If you haven't already reacted to the movie Pretty In Pink, you should. There is a scene where Jon Cryer's character is lip syncing and dancing to this song, and it's amazing.
A great cover to this song was done for a 1991 small, indie movie called "The Commitments". It's about a group of young people in Ireland's urban ghetto trying to chase a dream of a record deal by singing "Dublin soul". The acting is top notch and the songs are fantastic.
Hearing this, it immediately brings a movie scene back to me, Ducky. I know you guys are doing movie reactions. You should check out Pretty in Pink and when that scene happens, it is tough to sit still.
No doubt this is the best version, but there was a cute movie in early 90s called The Commitments, about an Irish band trying to bring soul to Dublin... that lead singer absolutely slays this one! You guys would probably get a kick out of that movie! Another great reaction, thanks! ❤✌
Jaz-Z and Kanye on Otis, but back in the day, Otis stood on his own. One of my favorites and my favorite scene from Pretty in Pink is Ducky coming in on this!
I was 7 years old when his plan crashed in Lake Mendota in Madison, Wisconsin 30 miles south of my hometown. I've been a fan as long as I can remember.
If the first thing you thought of was Duckie in "Pretty In Pink" - you're a real one! GenX! Amber - John Hughes films defined adolescents in the 80's. His film are MUST watch.
And see, now you have made me go listen to a rap song I didn't know about to hear the sample! Nice but hard to watch them tear up that car LOL! I love it when my 20 something year old boys hear me sing a line from a song that I know that was sampled on one of their favorite rap songs and they look at me like I'm crazy for knowing the words!
"The Commitments" covered this song about 10 or 15 years ago in a movie of the same name. The cover is really good, but no one can can even come near Otis' version.

One of the best soul songs ever. The band was Booker T and MG's. Also produced by Isaac Hayes. Hall of Fame musicians.
Duckies Legendary Dance to this song.....
Pretty in Pink ☺️✌️💞
Love this song...great reaction you two 😁
You should check out Duckie's (Jon Cryer - the same guy from 2 and a half men) lip sync to this song in the 1986 John Hughes written and produced film (also with Molly Ringwald - from 16 candles and The Breakfast Club) called 'Pretty In Pink"....
There’s also a great cover of this in the film The Commitments, which they have to watch for their film reaction channel!
I grew up on the Three Dog Night version and never realized it was a cover until well into my 30s.
Booker T and the MGs. A great mix of pure Musicians!!! Got their Hip Hugger album. Su-weet !!
It’s hip-hug her lol which is funnier
Never knew Booker T played on this song. Thanks for the info Mary. Hardly a day
goes by I don't listen to some Booker T. Love those guys.
Must see the concert movie
"The Monterey Pop Festival" (1967)
With Otis, Janis, Jimi, The Who, and lots of others, LIVE!
This song is so good. I love the Commitments doing this song in their movie. It’s been done by so many people. But dang, Otis is the man!
Beat part of the movie
This calls to mind a movie I'd love to see a reaction for ... The Commitments. It's about an Irish soul band that did a really nice cover of this song.
They would LOVE the movie!
Please react to the classic movie "PRETTY IN PINK" This song is a cool part of it. 🙏❤️
YES!
This song is one of many songs featured in PRETTY IN PINK, a movie that was very popular in 1986. That movie would be an excellent one for you guys to watch on your movie channel.
You GenXers missed this
There’s an iconic live performance of this, from the Monterey Pop Festival. Kids- I was at that show! I was standing directly beneath where he stood on stage! The man was totally electric!
Mama Cass monologue about her and John Lennon was hysterical
Wow ! What a memory, lucky you. ✌️
guys there is a scene in a movie called "pretty in pink" with this song. the movie is by the same director as breakfast club and ferris bueller and i think amber Will love that movie
Yessss!!! They'll both love this movie. But we have to get Jay to get past the name of the movie. He'll really like it a lot. Classic 👍🏻
Otis absolutely killed it when he did this song in concert, often at the end. And when you thought it was over he and his band would come back with a chaser of this. He put out a lot of great music in too short a period of time. Check out "Respect" (which he wrote) and "I can't turn You Loose."
I love songs like this, with that slow, steady buildup and then WHAM, hits ya right in the gut and just blows you away.
The version of this song, recorded by The Commitments, is perhaps one of the greatest covers ever! Highly recommend! (And Amber will love it because there's lots of real musical instruments playing too!)
Check out his live performance at Monterey Music Festival 🗣🎶😎
I love some Otis! I immediately think of Jon Cryer in Pretty in Pink.
Otis was raw pure talent and he always brought passion and soul ... just like Amber said!! He was an amazing gift 🎁🙏 and I absolutely love this song!! The build up toward the end is fire!! Thank you for making me smile with your reactions!! ❤️ @RobSquadReactions
One of the all-time favorites from 1967, he sang this song from his soul!
You owe it to yourselves to watch Otis Redding's Monterey Pop Festival performance of this song.
You also owe it to yourselves to watch Three Dog Night's version of this song with the late Cory Wells on lead vocal.
"Pretty in Pink" (you guys watched "Sixteen Candles") is a must watch with this song featured -- plus watch "Some Kind of Wonderful!"
I first heard Try a Little Tenderness on Three Dog Night's debut album. THEN became aware of Otis' version ... 🔥
Same for me... J and Amber even "educating" some Old Farts
Jordan,
Rappers constantly sample Soul Artists. If you wanna hear some famous Rap song samples listen to:
“Labi Siffre - I Got The…”
&
“Isley Brothers - Between the Sheets”
Released in 67” 45 yrs before sampled - goes to prove the original always the very best !! Got the LP “Otis live in Europe “ with Try a little tenderness “ the horns organ and his voice comes over so much deeper You can’t beat Quality RIP Otis
But this isn't the original. Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby recorded this song long before Otis or Three Dog Night did!
@@daveowens9849 yes I agree but I was reacting to the sampling statement which neither Crosby or Sinatra s. content has to my knowledge been done
I was really hoping this would be the live version from the Monterrey Pop Festival. Go find it. It’s 1000x better than this version. Which is unbelievable. But it is.
Great Choice. Another great Otis Redding song is “Sitting on the dock of the Bay” Three Dog Night did an amazing cover of Try a Little Tenderness.
This song will forever remind me of Duckie in "Pretty in Pink", who was my fashion inspiration in high school by the way.
I loved that look!! I still have my pair of scuffed "creepers" I call them my Ducky's 😉
Oooh. My favorite Otis song. Dock of the Bay is great, but this one captures Redding's dynamic range like nothing else.
Otis is great for sure. This is also covered by Donkey in SHREK. Lol. Love the videos. Thanks yall.
Otis is THE soul voice. He was taken from the world far too early. I saw him in London when I was a young teenage & was blown away by his energetic performance.
If you want soulful singing you MUST react to Otis Redding's These Arms of Mine. I promise you'll feel the passion.
This was brought back to light in Pretty In Pink. Duckie sings with it. Excellent song.
That is a movie that you need to react to(instead of Harry Potter movies). John Cryer's scene with this song is classic.
*VIVA LA DUCKIE!!!*
I can't hear this song without thinking of Duckie.
@@ronbruno5942 Harry Potter is a great series. I think when the girls become teens Amber and them should do Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, ( they already watched) 13 going on 30 ( girls night )
@@TheRealSubourbonMermaid Me as well. I see him sliding in the record store.
Goodday you guys! :)
React to "No Pity (In The Naked City)" by Jackie Wilson (1965).
His voice gives me goosebumps 😊
Love this song. But it always reminds me of the comedy Bull Durham with Kevin Costner. A movie I always watch just before baseball season starts.
What a fantastic beautiful song. We miss you Otis
Another gem I just loved watching you get enthusiastic over.
I would so love if/when we one day get to see you two watch The Commitments (1991). Pleeeease to the powers that be :)
THANK YOU!!! So many people only know him for Dock of the Bay, and tbh I can't stand that song. It's been overplayed for the last 50 years and it's not even a good example of his talent because it was so overly produced in the studio. Check out I've been Loving You Too Long. You will feel it in your soul, I promise. I love you guys SO MUCH!! {{{hugs}}}
P.S. Otis is in the Rock Hall if you ever get there. (You need to go, on the real).
And it’s one of the funniest films ever made.
@@neilmurray7330 #TrueStory
The best Irish movie in three decades🎉🎉🎉
I love this song! It also makes me think of the 80s movie "Pretty in Pink." There's a scene in there with this song.
Three Dog Night had an early hit with their cover of "Try a Little Tenderness". It peaked at #29 on the Billboard top 100 in 1969.
Hearing this, it immediately brings a movie scene back to me, Ducky. I know you guys are doing movie reactions. You should check out Pretty in Pink and when that scene happens, it is tough to sit still.
Otis is truly the best.
Jay & Amber, try "RESPECT" By Otis Redding, it was his song not Aretha's
No doubt this is the best version, but there was a cute movie in early 90s called The Commitments, about an Irish band trying to bring soul to Dublin... that lead singer absolutely slays this one! You guys would probably get a kick out of that movie! Another great reaction, thanks! ❤✌
Yes - I love that movie and that version! Their cover was so great along with Mustang Sally and many others. Definitely worth a watch!
@@cking8631 I forgot how good their Mustang Sally was!! Might have to revisit this!😉
I know this does not do Otis justice, BUT Ducky ( John Cryer) does a great redition of this song on the movie, "Pretty in Pink"
You should see this one live. Otis just goes off!
Here it is, from the legendary Monterey Pop Festival in '67. ruclips.net/video/NuJTUpJzLOw/видео.html
Jaz-Z and Kanye on Otis, but back in the day, Otis stood on his own. One of my favorites and my favorite scene from Pretty in Pink is Ducky coming in on this!
Yeah,You have some awesome Soul coming out of Mr Otis Redding, thank you for this 😊❤
I was 7 years old when his plan crashed in Lake Mendota in Madison, Wisconsin 30 miles south of my hometown. I've been a fan as long as I can remember.
If the first thing you thought of was Duckie in "Pretty In Pink" - you're a real one! GenX!
Amber - John Hughes films defined adolescents in the 80's. His film are MUST watch.
One of the GOATS of soul!!! Him and Sam Cooke are the Goats to me!!!! Next do These Arms of Mine!!!
I can’t hear this song without thinking of Ducky’s epic lip sync performance from Pretty in Pink! 😆
This to me will always be Duckie’s song in Pretty in Pink. One of the best scenes I a movie EVAH.
For your next movie reaction, you HAVE to watch "The Commitments." It features this song and a whole bunch more. You'll absolutely love it, I promise.
1st time I heard Otis redding was in1967 at the monterey pop festival
It's sad that he passed too soon
But his music 🎶 lives on
This was magnificent tho the cover by Three Dog Night with Cory Welles on lead was magnificent also. A few who reacted to it agree.
"The Commitments" covered this song about 10 or 15 years ago in a movie of the same name. The cover is really good, but no one can can even come near Otis' version.
Why didn't you do the live performance at Monterey Pop Festival? It better than the studio version which is rare for me to say.
stupid kanye disrespected otis on this one. the message is so heartfelt and respectful on this track and kanye comes along and makes it about profanity and disrespecting women and such...
Quit calling it a "sample"! It's flat out lack of original ability of the "rapper".
Have you guys ever reacted to Muddy Waters? This sixties music the last day has me wanting to hear the stuff that influenced them in the 50s.
There's also a brief moment in "Shrek" when Donkey sings a couple of lines from this song.
