This is great! I really appreciate you taking the time to do videos like these. They're very inspiring, and will hopefully help push me towards creating some mask of my own.
I haven't done any paper mache since I built a Godzilla head using two paper grocery bags as a base when I was around 10 years old. But your video makes me want to attempt a Krampus mask as the holidaze approach. Thanks.
Is there an advantage to using house paint over paper mache or Elmer’s glue? I’d prefer using materials I don’t have to worry about wearing gloves for. Just curious
I know this is going to sound silly but I'm searching around for video ideas on how to make a faceless RUclipsrs mask Corpse Husband and I'm keeping this one saved for later For some reason this seems so official to me though and intimidating to jump into if you don't do it often as I've never made a mask before. If you have any tips I'd love to hear them as I'm working with very little and would probably have to buy materials But as the old saying goes if you want something done right , do it yourself Edit: I cosplay as a hobby if your wondering why I want to make a mask of a faceless RUclipsrs avatar by the way
I followed all steps but when I finished the plaster was coming off the mask like one big sheet so i wonder if it’s the plaster sheets could u tell me what type of plaster sheets ur using and what type of paper towels ur using
I’m not sure what you’re describing. These are Gypsona plaster bandages, but you can usually find something similar at the craft store. It sounds like your plaster bandages might not have been cured yet. The paper towels are generic brand from Target, I think. Good luck! Send a pic of your finished mask on Insta/fb/email
Wow you’re really creative man!!! I’m a rookie to this. I’m gonna start making my own mask & costumes for my cosplay. Thanks for this incredible incite ❤
Those look realy good.better than stuff at the regular store .reminds me of better days when that vintage style wasn't vintage..lol or as vintage. In the 80sand early90s when I was a kid .alota vampires and classic monsters were still popular.👌🎃⚰️✌️
Hi. Can I have a list of some of the products you have and where you got them?? I don’t know where exactly to start or a good place to purchase this clay or head bust
Very cool Jasper really nice job sculpting the face and getting all the wrinkles constant. It really turned out nice. Making all the classic monsters has been on my mind for some time now and this is perfect way to do it. Thanks for posting this. Its always great to see your mad skills at work.
I haven't made any of these masks to sell. If I did, I would probably either mold these or 3D scan them to make them more economical to reproduce. It could happen!
This is great just wondering. I'm trying to make star wars cad bane mask with a moving mouth area..would making a mask the way you have here with added latex on the mouth area for the movement work? The way you make the masks here is perfect for what I need to do for my cosplay..but just need a movable mouth area.sorry long message just wondered if it would work
You won't be able to get as much movement as a silicone mask, but you can cut the jaw and get a simple nutcracker style movement. Latex doesn't really stretch as much as you might think, but give it a try.
Is the plaster impregnated cloth really necessary or can the paint impregnated towels do the same thing? Also, how much and where can I find inexpensive rolls of the plaster cloth?
As I discussed, it's just one way to do it. I've tried it the way you described, too. I think the best method is regular newspaper paper mache for the under structure. Plaster bandage is sold at craft stores and makeup effects supply stores.
You'll want a good anchor to do that, and a firm mask structure. Just gluing them on top of the mask wouldn't be very strong, but if you give it a mechanical hold as well, you'll be in good shape. Maybe drill a hole in the back of the horn to fit a screw, then put the screw and washer into the mask from the back, and into the horn. Epoxy in/under the horn and over/under the head of the screw.
Yes, it only takes about 15 minutes to set. I like the plaster bandage if the mask is going to be a decoration, but for a mask that you wear, I prefer the mask I did with a newspaper mache base. It's a little more comfortable.
You could make a pretty effective mask using these techniques. But are those bandages flexible and durable. Would they stand a bit of flexing and tugging and pulling around if you wanted moving jaw and eyes for a full on prosthetic movie mask?
Looks great man, have you ever tried using Ultracal 30, or Hydrocal to make an exact mold of your sculpt then cast a latex mask? Your sculpts are really great I best latex versions of your masks would kick ass!
Well, as I mentioned, I’ve used different base layers on each of the ones I’ve made. This one was plaster bandage, another was traditional newspaper and paste mache, another was all paint and paper towels. I did one recently on a 3D printed base shell. So whatever works!
I wouldn't recommend vaseline on a mask, as it will tend to come off on anything it touches. Hair gel would work well, though, or hair spray, depending on the desired effect. A more permanent option would be acrylic gloss or crystal clear.
The way this works you could pretty much use any clay because it's not part of the final mask, just something to build around. In fact, most of the materials don't really matter here. Just use materials you can get ahold of and see what you come up with!
That was a really cool tutorial. I especially like how you made the wrinkles. The fangs were a nice touch. When it comes to hair, I do a lot of Myers masks so when it comes to rehairing I’m using camel hair. Your mask turned out great. I’ve gotta get back into the diy mask community.
Glad you enjoyed it! Most of the masks I do are latex (if you’re a Myers guy, you’re probably familiar with the company I sculpt for), but these are a fun way to break away from the normal way of doing things!
@@jasperjanderson the hair on the tots masks is just awful, don’t know why they don’t also sell blanks, and why Tots doesn’t have the licence for the hell house masks. I’m sure they’ve tried getting the licence…
The trick is to get it to NOT stick. We want the plaster bandage to pull away from the head form when the mask is done. I painted on a layer of petroleum jelly to act as a release, but that may not be necessary for all clay types.
Gonna make a predator mask using this method
Excellent! Send photos if you do!

Hello! Lovely work! Was the final product heavy?
Pretty lightweight! Lighter when I've done the base layer with newspaper mache instead of the plaster bandages I used here, though.
@@jasperjanderson thank you so much! I will give it a try. This was a great video by the way! Thank you!!
Pretty , pretty , pretty , cool finished look !

Mike L I think so. It’s got strength and flex. I wear gloves for anything that’ll get all over my hands.

AWESOME, CAN U MAKE MOLD OUT OF THIS AND CAST INTO LATEX?
You certainly could! I've thought about doing this myself for a while.
You may want to try this technique for a mummy mask. It would look amazing.

You don’t have to use these exact products to make it work. Check your craft store for oil based clay and a foam head to sculpt on.

Hey Jasper it's the predator guy ! Not sure if you've already done this but have you tried selling those ? I'd definitely buy one .

These really honor the tradition of the original monster mask from the 50s. Great job!
Thanks!
Nice tutorial! Thanks. Can you reuse the clay?
Death Trails Haunted Yard if you use a soft oil based clay like this one, you can! Water based costs are cheaper, but will dry out.

Does the clay come off of the face cast? Thanks
Yep! I'm using oil-based clay that doesn't harden.
Do you let the plaster strips dry before adding the layers ofnpaper towels?

That’s just a few pieces of scrap plywood I put together.

Where can I buy plaster tape?
Craft stores usually sell it. I get it at the big makeup effects stores in Los Angeles.
Where did you get the hair
That's just fake fur from the fabric store
What type paper towel?
Just standard white paper towels. I usually get the generic brand.
Fantastic work! The paper mache texture would especially be perfect for a Mummy.
Yeah! Make one!
He says ummmmm a lot
What kind of paint did you use? amazing. Loveit.
Thanks! The mache is done with regular interior house paint. The actual painting is just basic craft store acrylics.
Devil
I don't say blah blah blah blah!!!!
What sort of paint did you use? I don’t know if I missed it in the video.
The base paint that the paper towels are dipped in is interior house paint. Then cheap craft store acrylics for the detail
