MSFS | PMDG 737 Tutorial Episode 1: Cold & Dark to Engine Start - including Route Input!

- Опубликовано: 20 июл 2024
- When I first got behind the controls of the wonderful new PMDG 737-700 for Microsoft Flight Simulator I have to admit, I spent a little while scratching my head wondering where to begin!
Around 10 video's later I'd began to understand how to turn the bring power to the aircraft, configure various settings and prepare a nice flight plan and figured I would consolidate that into a selection of videos to help YOU do the same - confidently get from A to B and enjoy every second whilst flying the PMDG 737 in MSFS. Lots of operators have their own slightly different flows covering everything required so I've used one for this video.
This first video, Episode 1 if you will, begins on stand in Prague LKPR and we are Cold and Dark. We'll get everything configured and set up for a lovely flight down to Skiathos (LGSK) and I'll share everything I've learnt so far with you here.
Don't miss my Simbrief Route Import tutorial too to help speed up the route input part of this tutorial (unless you like to add it all in manually too!)
Of course, there is always lots to learn, and company's also differ in their flows but if you have any tips/tricks then be sure to share them in the comments below!
Routing Used for this video series:
LKPR - Runway 06 - VOZ3E VOZ DCT LANUX DCT PESAT DCT BABIT DCT OLOTA DCT MAKED UL617 TSL TSL1C - Runway 01 NDB / LGSK
The aim for these tutorials are to help, upon release, to get you from 0hrs (as I did!) up in the air and completing a flight as simply as possible with confidence - I hope you enjoy the series!

Hi everyone! If you want to download the checklist I've created for free as well for when this amazing PMDG 737-700 releases then head to the website britishavgeek.com/pmdg-737
Honestly the PMDG 737 is such an intimidating plane to me as a casual aviation enthusiast, but your tutorials make it very simple!
Fantastic to hear! Sure is complex but that makes it superb to learn 🙂 hope you're enjoying it!
@@BritishAvgeek how do you release the parking brake I’m using a keyboard and mouse and I can’t seem to do it
@@chuck176late reply but simply clicking on the parking brake should work. It’s by the throttle quadrant
@@mr.ballio2201 💯💯👍
@@chuck176 I've also heard you need to hold the regular brakes in, while engaging or releasing the parking brakes.
I think the panels on the A320 are SO much more intuitive. In the 737 you have to figure out which switch position is currently set by judging the switch angle or looking at a light somewhere around the switch if there is one, while on the A320 the switch itself has the light and immediately tells you its position.
Honestly gives me a lot of appreciation for that cockpit layout.
indeed, much more thought and careful use required. Airbus is definitely much better in terms of the way they lay the flight deck out and the way it shows systems to the pilots
@@BritishAvgeek yeah probably a leftover from their much longer history. I can imagine that pilots can toggle the switches blindly after a while and would be really upset to suddenly have a button instead where you can't feel the position without looking. Just for the sim and probably new pilots as well, the Airbus seems more approachable.
Thank you for your work on these 737 PMDG videos, can't wait to put them to use as and when. all the best LeSeur.
You're most welcome 🙂 hope it helps when it's released too
I love it. Everything up until 6:18 you could tell that BAG was proficient and had spent many hours in the cockpit of the PMDG 737. Almost to the point of being complacent of it’s beauty. Then at 6:18 it hits him again, a small giggle of excitement and a nod to this phenomenal product from PMDG. This plane is incredible. Happens to me every flight in it at some point.
🤣 love that! You've summed it up wonderfully with my reaction to their product... It's wonderful!
Thank you so much for your brilliant tutorials. They are so clear and concise. Don’t know how I would get on without them. Thanks 👍
Thanks for taking the time to break this down--you're truly appreciated.
Great vid! I've read thru the PMDG tutorial flight, but watching the video brings things all into visual context! Thanks!
Great to hear Richard thanks!
Thanks! Can not wait for the release. I mainly fly the F16 and some other fighter jets in DCS. This is quite a bit different. Looking forward to it.
Same here. Currently going hard on the f16. 737 is gonna be a blast tho
Nice! Very different, I'm sure you'll love it 🙂
Thank you, very helpful as I never flown a Boeing. Also your checklist and simbrief tutorial with the airframe are superb.
You're welcome 😁
Great vid!
I've watched loads of other people(credit to their effort/time) but you do everything in one video so this is amazing helpful as I spent most my summer saving up.
Enjoy!
Hey! You may not remember me, but I took a few month break from MSFS. I remember subbing to you at 400 subscribers and I am back from my break and Fabio mentioned you so I was seeing how you were doing, you have grown so much and I’m really proud of you bro. Keep growing and making amazing videos
Thanks! Great to see you back 🙂
I really want to see this in VR. Thanks for the tutorials, good to refresh and expand that old rusty Zibo knowledge!
Yes I was always scared for PMDG in VR, but it's actually FPS friendly. That's amazing!!!
Perfect tutorial as always. Thank you so much for your efforts. Can't wait for the release. Maby I'll wait for the 800...
Great to hear Göran thanks! Hopefully the -700 is just around the corner and you can decide to dive in, or hold on for 12 weeks for the -800 🙂 either way I'm sure you'll be rather happy with your choice
I had the 737 NGX from PMDG for FSX and I really miss it, so yes it will be very exciting when released for MSFS2020.
Saving your tutorials for when I finally get my hands on this. 👍 Definitely going to help me the first time I try to start it up.

Thank you soo much for these tutorials! Those really helped me a lot, and got me to do my first 737-800 flight (YMML - YPAD)
nice video and nice tutorial explanation mate... PMDG is always da best...waitin' to release impatiently...
Thankyou 🙂 feel free to head to my website to download the little free checklist I've created
Thank you, i was confused on the controls os this 737, but with this video, you saved me! +1 subscriber :)
Excellent - keep them coming!
Thanks Peter 🙂
God I can't wait for this. Game changer.
Absolutely! That, plus the 146 and the MD82 all in 2 weeks have really made MSFS excel
Bit of info, the 3 green lights on the right of the fire handled are test lights for the engine fire and APU fire bottle squibs
Great stuff, thank you. A couple of items in the FMS I didn't quite pick up on but I'll try to manage this.
Hope you can do a full tutoral of how to use the features on the autopilot.
I'm so used to the A320 now, that I'm having some issues with the AP on this thing.
I'll see what I can do 🙂
Very nice plane. It's a good first release. Still missing some things but they'll likely be coming down the road
Missing what? Weather radar and EFB? They've already said a lot in their forums that those features are coming in the near future
Excellent work as usual ! Always enjoying your informative tutorials. I hope 737-700 will be released soon. Unfortunately computer on service, pump for cooler died. Fortunately NZXT comes with 6 years warranty! Should be up in the air by the weekend :) Feels terrible watching RUclips videos when you’re stuck on the tarmac :(
Ah not good Ronnie! Hoping it'll all be fixed quickly. Glad you're enjoying the tutorials in the mean time 🙂
what a beautiful aircraft well worth the money in my opinion
Absolutely!
I realy like the way you explain all it takes to do things in the planes thanks
Good to hear 🙂
Thank you for this. If it wasn’t for your detailed videos i wouldn’t be as comfortable (sorta) with the PMDG 737. I think I’m missing a step but not sure which one. After 10,000 fl a cabin altitude warning comes up. Still learning, thank you!!!!
Downloaded the checklists, great !
Great to hear!
I see you are a man of culture when choosing LKPR as departure location
I like to embrace everyone for who you are 🙂
Excellent tutorial mate 👍👍
Thanks Ed! Hope its helpful for plenty starting at 0hrs too 🙂

Thanks Matthew 🙂 don't forget the checklist on the website too if it'll be helpful 🙂
Love your tut's! I just got the 737-600 and printed your summarised chklist. Great! But I would also love some sort of checklist "What to do before engine start" (all things mentioned in this video, but sometimes its good to have it printed). Not so many steps, but still quite a few for a airliner-beginner like myself. Maybe you have such a list, or can recommend me where to download it? =) All best! Oh, and you have precis 1600 likes on the with now. Dont thank me... ;-) Great work you do! Keep it up.
You can also monitor the APU EGT and RPMs on the lower EICAS display.
Nice tip thanks for sharing with everyone 🙂
Thanks for the tutorial mate 👍
You're welcome! 🙂
Nice! Now we just need to get the lovely bird released !!😀
Thanks Anders! Coming soon 🙂
Thank you so much for the help!!
You're welcome!
Great video thank you, I didn't catch site of them but im hoping this aircraft will have the usual PMDG turnaround short and turnaround long panel save states already in
Thanks! You'll be pleased to know that the various state saving options are there
Very nicely done. Hopefully this will help a lot of people who can find the 737 a big overwhelming with all the buttons and dials. Just a few simple things to help those who are not especially familiar with the 737 as of yet. The LAND ALT on the overhead is first set to the altitude of the departure airfield in case an emergency landing needs to be made after takeoff. For simulation purposes we don't usually plan to land back at our departure airport but you never know.
Also, kind of disappointed in the APU start procedure. In general on a warm day you typically don't need to hold the APU start button for more than 3 seconds but on very very cold days, you have to hold the APU start button for at least 5 seconds and in some cases it can take about 2-3 times or more before the APU will actually start. Especially if the plane has been sitting for a few days. I don't like that with this model it's just a simple click and done.
Your Trip Fuel value goes into LSK 2L on the PERF INIT page for PLAN/FUEL. That number is also provided in simbrief. This tells the CDU what your trip fuel requirement is from Origin to Destianation so other calculations can be done correctly. The Transistion Altitude for the departure airport also needs to be changed in the PERF INIT as well. You left it at FL180 by default where it was probably different for your departure airport.
Don’t arm the emergency exit lights until you get AC power on the aircraft. Wait to arm these until after you put ground power or APU power on the aircraft. Each of those emergency lights has its own battery and you will run them down. They won’t come on if there is AC power on the aircraft
Thanks for the video, Ill be watching this about 10 times over...Cant wait to fly this bird in VR once iv learnt everything in pancake mode :)
Awesome! Hope you find it and the checklist I've made useful too over on my website
@@BritishAvgeek Ill be ckecking that out for sure cheers bud
This looks seriously nice. Thanks a lot for the video. I can't believe this seemingly runs better then the FBW a320. If it remains that way i'll be amazed.
Thanks! Absolutely - it's remarkable for performance and really looking forward to seeing it released soon
Just got the 600.Looks really good but just having a bit of trouble trying to get it going.I'm going through with this tutorial as I assume the use the same layout/start up. I've never used the FMC before for anything.I've just used MSFS flight plans or Little Nav map plans.I don't use Simbrief or the other one so I'm hoping that will suffice when I do do a flight.Cheers.
Hi! Sounds like fun! Definitely check out simbrief (you can sign up for free for a basic airac)
Ofc it’s our fav Luke at work
🙌 hopefully the video helps quite a few 🙂
@@BritishAvgeek it certainly has polished my memory ✌️
Do you have a basic how to get started tutorial series like this for the A320? I had a look at the playlist you have but all the videos seem a bit niche like how to use the printer and photoshop the coffee mug etc...
The tutorial was very good. I have one question how does your Sim look so crisp and the colours look so on point I have a very good PC with high specs but I still can’t get this crispiness
great video mate and cant wait to fly on release, where do you change the settings for the IRS to be realistic and not instant?
Thanks! It's all in the FMS inside the many many pages of customisable options 🙂
Very good thanks 👋🏻
Welcome 👍
Need to change your power setting switch from Battery to Grd Power to APU to Gen 1 or Gen 2 after startup.
Thank you
It's such a tease that so many already have it, yet they're unwilling to advise of a release date!
Only three content creators have it so far and then the unknown number of beta testers - I'd say it's less than 20 people 🤣 it'll be coming soon
Awesome vid, really helpful, I couldn’t even start the engines until I watched this (despite trying 😂) I notice your steps in the vid are quite a bit different from the PMDG checklist on your website, so I amended my own checklist a little to match, one thing I noticed In the vid, you said you would turn recirc fans off before starting the engines, but didn’t….does it matter? Should they be off before engine start and back to auto after? Thanks again! This will be a popular vid since the 737 release!
I think I meant the Packs go to Off for engine start. And yeah the checklist I created was made after the videos were made, as I created my own flow over a few more weeks
@@BritishAvgeek ah thanks man, yeah left the recircs to auto and the plane didn’t blow up 😂
I have so many questions about this plane. Mainly the -why- of the different levers, and the alternate lever positions and the consequences of doing it 'wrong'.
The 737 is odd because it's a modern airliner full of 1970s tech as well, all mixed into one aircraft so it requires a lot more input than others
Had this module since release and having great fun with it. Not unlike many other players there are things that
can be improved by investigating, reading, watching and inwardly digesting whatever information can be found as there doesn't appear to be a manual as such.
I do appreciate very much your efforts in providing an amount of aforementioned information.
I regret however as a tutorial, it falls short. As a demonstration, very good. As a tutorial, no. Perhaps if you could do a little research as to
techniques of instruction, it would take a small quantity more in transforming a " Demonstration" into a true "Tutorial"
Please note, my opinion counts for bugger all. And I do watch your postings.
Good to hear you're enjoying the PMDG 737 for MSFS! A true tutorial of course would lengthen the video into a much longer size and I've tried to capture it in a way to cover the wider community without going into a ton of complex details but thanks for your thoughts and feedback
As always great videos mate. I keep wondering why when i'm turn on my HYD PUMP, ELEC 2/ELEC 1 the low pressure light not going off?
Even when the APU is eventually on, and APU Gen and Bleed?
Brilliant thanks
Thanks 👍 hope it's helpful - grab the free checklist I've since created too on my website britishavgeek.com/pmdg-737
Great tutorial - just got this aircraft. I notice that the 3 point switches does not "stick" in the On position. Eg, It does start the APU but the switch does not stay in the ON position.
Indeed - it's spring loaded I believe 🙂
Thank you good Video.
Thanks!
Thanks a lot!
Hope you're enjoying the 737 😁
Bookmarked for later use ;)
great to hear! :) more to come too
Hi, I was just wondering why even though I had followed through this whole tutorial with no mistakes (that I’m aware of) but when I disconnected the GPU the first officers screens turned off and the aircraft seemingly lost power. The FMC and PFD stayed on along with a couple of lights but all else seemed to have turned off?
Just one thing. Dont turn on the APU BLEED before u start the APU and give it a moment to run. APU BLEED puts a pressure on the generator and it is a common thing to let the generator run a minute before turning apu bleed on
Indeed, we've spoke about it on live streams a few times - the APU bleed is in various positions based upon what state saving you select to start in
Is this true for Airbus' too?
@@beesmongeese2978 yes, basically, APU BLEED is demanding on the APU.
If you start a car from cold, you dont push the revs to the max as well. This is the same. In reality, pilots allows the APU to run at least a minute before pushing it.
"No power hooked up whatsoever...but the GPU is hooked up. Moving on to someone else's video since getting the ground power unit to the aircraft is something I don't know as I imagine others might not either.
You'll find it in the FMS under FS Actions - Ground Services - Request GPU 👍
Thanks for the video, would be nice to see the variance of liveries at some point so far I've still to see a livery that I really like. Do BA or easyjet operate 737?
Are there any checklists available, or due to be made available?
Hi! Been covering a few different ones in live streams too and more to come as well 🙂 checklist wise I've created one and it's available on my website too free to download
I believe BA do operate the 737 as a regional aircraft.

Try to test the stall warning while the chocks are on before you push back
@@BritishAvgeek that is what I do, I do it in the order as in this video. I can’t really understand why, but I must be doing some thing wrong then. And I did it in the PMDG B737-800 not the -700.
Hello Captain, how do you get the outside camera to move in circles around the plane ?
Do you know if you can now or if they will later implement the option to have the FMC on a separate tablet like you can with the FBW A320? I really love that feature. As always mate great video’s. Thank you.
Hi Scott - they're aiming to make a new EFB and add it to the aircraft in due course 🙂
@@BritishAvgeek that’s awesome work. What I meant though is you know how now you can have the MCDU on your own tablet, will you be able to do that with the 737 version of the MCDU. FMC isn’t it? I think lol

Hello, I have a issue where my stall speed is really high on landing. (Stall speed at 160 when on approach with flaps 2)
What's the aircraft gross weight?
Very nice👍Although do you know what the release date is?
Not yet - hopefully soon after SU9 but in any case it'll release "soon" 🙂
Does this airplane have an EFB like the A320 can you automatically load the simbrief flight plan?
Hi, currently no - I've made a video showing how to put a simbrief flight plan into the aircraft easily so check that out. PMDG have stated that an updated EFB will come in the future
For reasons I cannot yet determine, my parking brake refuses to animate fully except to give off a clicking sound but with no movement. As for whether it actually keeps the aircraft bound to the spot, I think not because movement is still detected even after it’s been activated.
Would you advise I delete and redownload the PMDG ? Is that likely to help at all?
have you ensured you're using the new realistic braking system? You have to fully press the brake pedals down and then toggle the parking brake to set it.
