Alcatraz "escape," 50 years later

  • It was 50 years ago that three men became the only inmates ever to escape from Alcatraz. Or did they? Rebecca Jarvis and Jeff Glor spoke with Jolene Babyak, the daughter of the acting warden at the time, and U.S. Marshal Service Deputy Michael Dyke about the escape and whether the men could still be alive today.

    • @20BMR
      @20BMR 9 лет назад +15

      Kirk I agree with you. I think she's trying to look down on these 3 escapees so it doesn't make her dad look like the idiot. They were smart as hell to get outta there n in my opinion I think they made it looking at the evidence. More evidence says they would be alive than not!! But only 3 people will truly know that,

    • @kirkscudder8827
      @kirkscudder8827 9 лет назад +7

      20BMR Thank you, that is true, the only people who will know if they are alive, is frank Morris and john and Clarence angling them self's, I think that they made it too, that's right she is just trying to make her dad sound cool.

    • @andrewmazurek132
      @andrewmazurek132 9 лет назад +9

      I totally agree. She claims they are "amateurs" but are the only ones to officially escape the rock. Frank Morris had an IQ in the top 2% of the country he thought ahead and this was planned on the night and perfectly set. Just because she woke up to a siren and was told a prisoner escaped doesn't make her a pro at finding criminals.

    • @kirkscudder8827
      @kirkscudder8827 9 лет назад +9

      I know, the amateurs were the prisoners, that tried to escape, but drowned, got shot, or just got recaptured, I think that there was a total of 14 escapes from Alcaraz all together, and only 3 prisoners ever escaped without a trace, and that was Frank Morris and the angling brothers, there was a few prisoners that did escape, at night and wasn't noticed missing until the morning, but the police eventually found there bodies, so surely if the frank morris and the angling brothers did die there bodies would of been found, just like the other prisoners that escaped but was found in the water, that is why I know, they made it, they were all in there 30's when they escaped, it is hard to believe that, they will all be in there 80's now, Frank Morris was about 5 years older than john and Clarence angling though, I hope that all 3 of them are still alive, the thing that annoys me is on that little documentary, Alcatraz escape 50 years later, when the interviewer, askes the martial do you think that they made it, he always says "I think that the brothers might of made it" its obvious that they all made it because I know that there was a rumour saying, that the angling brothers knocked out frank Morris out and put him in the water, and continued the escape alone, if they did do that why was there no body found ? also why would they of killed the man who was the main help ? and there are also other rumours going around, saying that they was probably eaten by sharks, 1st of all a shark would never eat an whole human body, because they don't like the taste of human blood, the only time that a shark would attack a human if they mistake them for a seal, or if they feel threatened, so if they did get eaten by sharks or even attacked by a shark, they obviously wouldn't be able to swim any ware, so if they was attacked they would of just died in the water where they was attacked, but that didn't happen, so they obviously didn't get attacked by sharks, I am not even sure if there was actually sharks in that water, because there was also a rumour that, the warden just used to say that to stop the prisoners from escaping, I personally believe that they escaped, I think that there was maybe outside help, but obviously no 1 will know that, apart from frank Morris and the angling brothers, and the outside help if there was any ? and obviously Allen west would of know, because he was the man who actually planned the escape, but he could not get out of his tunnel in time. I just hope that all 3 of them are still alive.

    They definitely were not amateurs, Frank with a very high iq of 133, and the Anglin brothers who were smart in their own right planned it out, every detail. from having thier friend Mr Breezi waiting out in the bay in a boat ready to get them when the ferry they attached the stolen electrical cords slowly took them that way to their waiting friend. And they took 15 months to make sure it was as fool proof as possible. They were smart and took their time at it, didn't rush through it. So it was her father that was the amateur and refused to believe that anyone can escape off his prison island and survive, her father had the inflated ego that was deflated when they escaped and made it.

    Bit stupid to call these 3 amateurs considering they escaped which was meant to be a prison that is impossible to escape from. Pictures, jackets etc scattered around the waters in the area...they obviously knew what they were doing, it took them a year of just pure planning and everything they done sent the government and media and public in directions other than one that would lead to their re-capture.

    Hi, I absolutely agree with you. The guys who were sent to Alcatraz where not amateurs in any way which is why they were sent there to begin with. Also, Frank Morris who is one of the men who escaped is said to have been very smart. The way they planned to escape, the digging through the vents and making of the rafts without getting caught right under the guards noses....sounds like a sharp bunch to me. The prison and the feds just do not want to admit they were out smarted. Guys made it.

    Whenever I watch any of these I think about the Mythbusters episode when they tried it. They theorized that they didn't go to where the raft was found on Angel Island, but they went with the tide towards the Marin Headlands. It is possible that after they landed that someone drove them and the raft to Angel Island and put the raft there to throw the searchers off the trail.

    Of course they don't talk about the Anglins mother receiving anonymous gifts and cards ,or other evidence found that suggests the three inmates didn't just get into the water and start swimming but that they circled the island around to the dock where they may have hitched a ride behind a prison transport boat that got them close enough to angel island that they could actually cut loose and swim the rest of the way.I heard about this on a tv special about a relative of the Anglin brothers who set out to find proof that they actually did make it,but as I understand it Frank Morris was a loner with no family so they don't know much about him.

    I just finished Babyak's book on the Alcatraz escape, and it's a very readable account of the escape. The comments against Babyak here are very unfair. She does not claim to be an expert because she was the daughter of the acting warden at the time. She did a lot of research and interviews with former employees and inmates to piece together an account of the escape. As much as i would like the escape to have been a success, there are plenty of fair arguments to suggest they didn't make it:
    - The were unable to test the raft before it went into the water. The could not know of the seams would hold up. The same with the life vests.
    - One of the life vests discovered after the escape had teeth marks on the valve, indicating it could not hold air.
    - A bag was found with personal photographs and list of contacts belonging to the Anglins
    - The tide was heading towards the pacific ocean at the time they most likely would have had the raft in the waters
    - Clarence Anglin and Frank Morris were career criminals. While Morris might have been able to keep his mouth shut about the escape, both the Anglins would likely have bragged about it at some point. All would have had to commit burglary to get clothes and money (and yes, i have read about the reported stolen car on the night of the escape, but the info is still unconfirmed and not proven to be related to the escapees).
    - It's been said that statistically, people whose died in the bay at some point float up, but a lot of the people who commited suicide in the bay in the same time period of the escape, simply vanished.
    I'm not going to conclude they did not make it, but it's important to be fair. There are arguments both ways.

      there is a documentary on the family of the two brothers and they received Christmas cards sent by them from 1962-1964. In the 90's a close friend of the family fave them a photo of the brothers which was taken in 1975 they are alive. They found bones nine months later and asked the family for a DNA sample and when they tested it and it didn't match, as well as the fact that if they were alive today they would be ages 85 and 84 so there's a chance there alive today.

    She's pretty much just repeating what her dad has said through the years. They're amateurs their amateurs their amateurs. But wasn't The Rock designed for professional escape comics that couldn't be held in other prisons along with serious violent prisoners. Suggest that little bit she said there doesn't hold water no pun intended.

    Actually the only real hindrance is the bay, however even with what they call "cold water" LOL cold water is north atlantic.
    Make an improvised floating device, very easy and fast, then follow the current, and use arms and legs for steering, very easy. And yes tye did get away, odds are they all did.

    They had to of gone to south America and ya they had no family or money but if that is then how come they were never found in the US its possible by the time they found out they were missing they had a 9 hour head start it takes almost about 10 or 12 hours from San Francisco to the border so by the time they were able to report the escape they had about maybe 2 hours to get to the boarder if they were in LA but with the time they left and the time it took for them to get across to land it's hard to say if they got to the border without getting caught or maybe the just grabbed a bout when they got across and went to Canada or something idk but it's possible they made it out alive

      M3RKiN LAP00N there wen by plane or boat.... be two many cops looking for them....and you cant go those the border.. they would be so hot....i think they where long gone... befor morning.... hid in mexco ... then go south by plane....you would have to get a way as fast and far away like right now......and theres lots of people in jail to help them.... they would love to help....

    Who says they actually did escape? They could have been killed by inmates or guards and the whole escape plan used to cover it up if they did escape and made it it was probably covered up so as not to give any hope or ideas to any other inmates if there dead where is there bodies never found other than one found floating good on them if they are alive and watching this
