We're shooting our post mortem episode today at 3:45 PM PST, so make sure you head over and watch this week’s episode and leave your questions down below!
SHANE BE MY AUNT
Heading to college next weekend... you both survived (I assume) any advice?
whos more likely to be able to escape from prison, ryan or shane? my vote is sarah
If you were in Alcatraz would you want to escape, and if so how would you do it?
Why is it always a tunnel? Why aren’t there more disguise attempts? How would you two escape a prison?
Knowing me I’ll be the one guy who can’t get his vent open

Those 3 guys: where are the other 2?

considering how smart their plan was for the escape, i wouldn't be surprised if they purposely left their pictures and belongings behind to make the searchers believe that they passed away
dang, I didn’t even think of this!! smart!
what if the bags were weighing them down and they realized that that was gonna make the boat like thing they built sink and the only reason they made it to land was because they left those bags

Allen being left behind after doing all the work is the equivalent of doing a whole project by yourself but your classmates get all the credit
But Frank planned the whole thing, his IQ is 133
@@mr.noaudio94 I agree, I believe Frank had the idea of leaving Allen behind with a fake plan telling him that they will go to Angel Island, which I believe they didnt. I believe they went straight to Shore instead, and apart of leaving Allen behind was because they saw him as a risk. Allen was brutal compared to them, he was more violent and they didnt like that.
So they either left him behind with a fake plan, OR, Allen took the fall on purpose as he didnt have much time left to serve anyways, and gave the authorities the fake plan, with them believing it was true. Could be a simple mistake too that he couldnt escape with them, but I doubt it since he came up with the idea.

Fun Fact: In the funeral of the mother of the brothers that escaped, 2 tall manly looking ''women'' were present. Birthday postcards were sent in the birthday anniversaries of their mother as long as she lived and the biggest clue of all suggesting they made it out alive, there was a car theft reported a few hours after they escaped and the description was fitting the escapees.
There's actually a picture of them against a tree that was taken 5 years after their escape. They moved to a small village and the picture was proven to be true because in the picture there was a picture of a hwy in the background and so someone looked up when the hwy was built and it was new as there wasn't a road there before. So the picture was confirmed as true that they survived
Yeah they did say that after the escape the FBI or authories anywhere in California never had any reports of robberies near the areas, however, they likely meant this into effect ACTWR they were done their original search for the escapees. Meaning if it was only a few hours into the break of dawn that they escaped, the people would still be looking for them. Meaning this theft was likely them because this was before the FBI was done searching the ocean. This was the only theft they committed and it was before it was set into effect. This was definitely the escapees
I, too, watched the episode and got those bits of information.

From the Wikipedia about the escape, "Clarence and John were reportedly inseparable as youngsters; they became skilled swimmers, and amazed their siblings by swimming in the frigid waters of Lake Michigan as ice still floated on its surface." There was also another escape afterwards of an inmate that managed to swim to the shore of the mainland but was caught immediately after. Tbh there's a good chance that the men were able to escape, and good for them imo.
Yeah, in the video its stated that there was no evidence of thefts in the immediate area following the mens escape, but in fact a 1955 blue Chevrolet (California license plate KPB076) was reported stolen in Marin County the same day-a claim corroborated by contemporaneous stories in the Humboldt Times and the San Francisco Examiner. The following day, a motorist in Stockton, California, 80 miles (130 km) east of San Francisco, reported to the California Highway Patrol that he had been forced off the road by three men in a blue Chevrolet.
The man who reported this could not have known about the escape yet, and yet his descriptions were accurate.
Imagine the 3 of them survived that night and they're in their 80's or 90's right now and would decide to take a tour in the island again.

Their ingenuity and determination make them so likeable that it’s hard to not root for them. And if they survived, they lived honest lives afterwards anyways.

It’s a shame there aren’t many prisons in the US that have some of the rules in Alcatraz. Keeping prisoners happy/positive would really help to actually reform people, and would cut back greatly on violence in prisons.
in my head it makes more sense if the prison has very strict rules tbh, bc if u were to commit a crime and land in a prison were u feel like u are on vacation, u wouldnt regret the crime as much and would maybe commit another crime bc the prison is not that bad. whereas in a "strict prison" i think u would think twice before comitting the crime bc u are scared of living in such circumstances, if that makes sense (there would probably be more prisoners trying to escape ig but thats another story)

I was lowkey mad when they said they left him behind
I mean, the MythBusters did an episode all about the Alcatraz escape and they actually attempted it themselves, and if my memory serves me right, I do believe they succeeded. So I believe that their survival was very likely.
Yes. They used period accurate raincoats , materials, and the exact methods the inmates used. The only thing they didn’t do was inflate the raft with a modified musical instrument (because how it got inflated really didn’t matter). They also launched in identical weather conditions and temperatures, and successfully made it to the mainland. They showed that it wasn’t just feasible, but likely that the inmates survived.
i feel bad for West being left behind, he helped with a lot of the work, from what it seems like. he had the original idea, he hung up the sheets, he was the one on the building team to mark out weaknesses in the building. and then he got left behind :(
What would have been epic is if the three men managed to come back and get Allen even after the escape.

Okay but the fact that Allen was the one who initiated the plan, but was left behind... A tragedy, it's worse than a tragedy to me. But I don't blame the others ofc, I mean they couldn't have known if Allen did break through from his cell or not, and when they would've realised that Allen was left behind, it was too late....
He didn’t initiate the plan he was just a tag along who helped get some cement glue and paint. The mastermind was frank morris
Allen was left behind and yet didn’t call for the guards to rat out his cellmates. I think this may mean that’d he also be willing to give the wrong story about their escape plan to the authorities (and still get good behaviour privilege for it). Can’t say he was a good man, but he probably was a loyal one.

@@rustinstardust2094 Would have went on a revenge hunt.
Imagine them enjoying the show sitting comfortably in the couch with grandchildren and a bag of chips
So, lets break this down.
We have 2 theories. One that says the guys died, but that a shipping freighter saw a body 20 miles out in the ocean. The other having pretty solid evidence that the Anglin bros are alive.
What if, what if.
The Anglin bros survived, but Morris, and that the body seen by the freighter was his?
That could be possible
But how would he have died?
Surely if Morris was drowning/floating away/ having a hard time, the brothers would have helped him right? They don't seem like terrible people
Although, maybe Morris told them to keep going on without him, like West did
Hmm
My dude, that was six fuckin weeks after the escape. By that time the body would be at the bottom. It was most likely the body of a depressed civilian who just ended his life
Its certainly possible, but it's worth noting that San Francisco County Coroner Henry Turkel cast doubt on speculation that it could have been one of the escapees, emphasising the improbability that a body would still be floating on the surface of the ocean after more than a month; instead, Turkel proposed that the corpse may have been that of Cecil Phillip Herrman, a 34-year-old unemployed baker who had jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge five days earlier.
Some additional fun facts include:
- in the video its stated that there was no evidence of thefts in the immediate area following the mens escape, but in fact a 1955 blue Chevrolet (California license plate KPB076) was reported stolen in Marin County the same day-a claim corroborated by contemporaneous stories in the Humboldt Times and the San Francisco Examiner.
-Brizzi (the Anglin family friend who claimed he was in contact with the brothers and had a picture of them that a number of experts deemed authentic) also presented an alternative escape theory: Rather than use the raft to cross the bay, he said, they paddled around the island to the boat dock, where they attached an electrical cord-which was reported missing from the dock on the night of the escape-to the rudder of a prison ferry that departed the island shortly after midnight, and were towed behind it to the mainland.
Waking up at 7 am, getting a hot shower, having a "happy hour" everyday, being allowed to move into a cell closer to your homies - this prison doesn't seem half-bad.

Gucci Sushi how do you know ?
pito cochino what does hold my beer have to do with the death of Morris?
"hold my hand cuffs."
“Hold my soap” “and try not to drop it”
Here are some things I want to point out.
1. I think they tested the raft in that work shop for leaks and to see if it would hold all 4 guys without losing air.
2. There’s a good possibility those guys trained their selves to physically help withstand that water as a back up plan. They could’ve taken ice baths or something equivalent to help them get used to that cold water and I’m sure they worked out a lot to keep in shape while also staying small enough to fit through the duct work.
3. I think the maintenance guy was in on it considering they probably wouldn’t have found that workshop and a lot of the tools without him.
4. The chances of them surviving in the U.S without being caught is very slim so I do think they fled to another country.
5. They could’ve been using those bags to keep the water out of the raft from the harsh waters and that’s how they lost that sealed bag filled with letters.
i grew up in san francisco, and shane's right, the bay is terrifying. we were always told not to go far out in the water, because the currents get crazy and the bottom is really inconsistent. You could take one step and be completely underwater
What if they just dropped all that stuff in the water on purpose? What if they made it look like they died in the water so the FBI would be hesitant to look for them? These are really smart escapees were talking about here, and if I were them I would make it look like exactly that, and I think they would too!
What if they left West behind on purpose to misdirect them? That would be....genius!

D Hennny From what I’ve seen I haven’t finished the video but him lying to the Feds so they’d trust him but not actually giving them any true or important evidence so they’d make it
Maybe. I imagine it would've been hard to throw away something with sentimental value like family photos but if ya wanna throw the cops and the FBI off your tail, ya gotta just let it go.
I also figure that West would not have really told the authorities where the 3 prisoners intended to aim the raft for as the info. says he did....he would not have especially wanted to help them catch the prisoners and have 3 enemies come back to Alcatraz and find out he'd snitched and jump on him, so he wouldn't have told the authorities anything they never could prove he lied about.
Too bad these dudes were criminals, cause it sounds like they would have been great engineers!
The prison could have aroused the ingenuity and desire to survie in them to make them excellent engineers...On land i guess they would have still been robbers
maybe if they had a better upbringing and better education they could've been engineers 🤷♀️
Life isn't as easy for some people. World is full of failed geniuses.
i mean they were bank robbers not serial killers or rapists so they didn't actually commit anything too morally wrong. i root for them, they seem like cool dudes
@@reptile_loki its actually confirmed by the anglin family that they made sure to never kill anyone
“MythBusters” proved that it was possible that the escapees got out. “Expedition Unknown” revealed that the photograph of the two men beside a termite mound could be the Anglin brothers via facial recognition analysis. I think Morris and the Anglin brothers got out and lived out the rest of their lives in Brazil.
I just started binging these, I’ve seen them in the past, but now I know why I find Shane so funny, he’s got that Midwest humor-the best sense of humor
anyone else get oddly sad that Allen was left behind
yea like allen was just tryna escape and then he gets left behind by them :((
@@janie4818 and he was the leader

Imagine being in prison and some guy comes up to you and says "hey man, I'll trade you a pack of smokes for your raincoat."
Thats not that weird in prison
@Ethan how would you know? Thats actually very common to make trades in prison while at least back then my grandpa went to prison when hes young
@Jay Garcia I never knew that people actually traded stuff in a prison and my mother worked at one for awhile
Haha
Can I get your instagram? Or snap? 😻😹
They survived and they escaped! The FBI and the prison just can’t stand that they were completely outsmarted by these guys. Same happened with DB Cooper. They didn’t catch him so the FBI are like “oh he must not of survived the jump” no you were outsmarted end of story lol
when you pull off prison escape so well that everyone is rooting for you
I have a hard time believing three grown men, especially physically fit prisoners, drowned together at the same time. Especially since regular people are able to swim the same distance.
its because of the strong currents or the cold water combined with the distance that made it so hard. not the distanceby it self
@@hmmmm635 if you consider the adrenaline and determination, then they drowned full of adrenaline and determination.
@@TB--sp9wy you are freaking brutal lmao
TB - 1497 Pahhahahahahhaa ffs! 😂
But it could be the currents that drowned them. A professional football player where I live drowned in a lake or river because the currents were so rough.

i love the fact that they didn't HAVE TO crossdress, they just chose to, and we love to see that
I was really rooting for them. The plan is just too good. They deserved to make it out. Hope they lived and enjoyed the rest of their lives.
Kat M ......... they were in the prison for a reason
EZ Yeah, I know. That's why I explained that I was rooting for them since they had such a great plan.

I love how, if the brothers did survive, they had sent their mom flowers on multiple occasions, and had dressed as women to attend family members funerals despite the risk it took if someone had found out that it was them. I really hope that they did survive, they didnt commit and despicably horrible crimes. They robbed a bank, cleverly escaped an "inescapable" prison and stayed clean from what we know for 50 years. These guys are cool.
Yep they are the reason we got to see Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows.
@@pranavpanicker1120 underrated!!!!
@@pranavpanicker1120 thats such a great show omg
The only time I’ll root for murders
No they didn't stay clean. One of them is the zodiac
Plot twist: they got stuck in purgatory, killing zombies in an endless time loop.
I was looking for this comment so that I won't be the only one who thought about zombies xD
They didn’t just leave the heads in their beds on the night of the escape, they used the heads whenever they left their cells to work on the raft. Those heads were used at least a few times to help them cheat night “headcount.”
You left out the part that Frank Lee Morris IQ was at genius level
Dhanish Ayaz Yes I know
Frank Morris if course you do, you have a high IQ
IQ level was 133
The Anglin brothers were very sharp as well.
Chris Waltman nope not really they needed franks instructions
They waited 30 minutes in their secret workshop for Allen West. Knowing time was running out, they left a raft, life vest, and a paddle for Allen West, Incase he ever managed to make it out of his cell.
This
True lads, shame that guy didn't make it. I mean they were criminals but we all wanted to see them escaping
Diogo Fonseca the 2 brothers escaped and that other guy.Do u think they went their separate ways or all 3 together?
Diogo Fonseca they all did for sure, riskier to spoitn
@@suhail1200 if they made it, i believe they went Separate ways since Morris was a troublemaker but smart tho. Morris was in and out of prison and if i were one of the brothers i wouldn't want anything with that guy for a couple years at least. Just my opinion
The Time Variance Authority is the culprit 😂
The fact that the two vests were found empty proves that the two brothers survived the journey
Me: Imagine being a leader of a group of inmates that escaped without you, even tho u started the whole idea.
Allen West:
how long was their sentences ?
as someone above me said, it was most likely done on purpose. Allen get's questioned about it, gives the feds the wrong info about which island they are escaping to, but he gave them the wrong info but he still got time off his sentence, whilst the other 3 can escape in peace. For a plan this well thought out, I'm sure it was no mistake he was left behind, they were very clever.
Fanni Latos da heck thats way too awesome
sad
@@FanniLatos I dont think anyone would take such a big sacrifice, that is to be left behind to leave wrong clues, especially the one with the idea to escape. Although it is a possibility. Regardless of our conjectures, we won't know the truth until they confess i guess
Do you not think that the plan was so detailed and ingenious, that they simply could have planted the life-jackets and raincoat bags with their personal effects to mislead the FBI?
Margot wow. This is actually plausible.
i thought of that too , they got away and sent all that to shore
Margot I can totally see that, it’d be easy to throw a nice red herring like that.
i also think so, they did it to mislead
Or alternatively, with the bags of belongings, they were thrown out to reduce weight on the raft- then the life jackets were discarded at shore into the sea, rather than leaving them to mark their landing ground.
They survived. Because frank morris became cassey in loki 🤣
i feel like unless you’re like a serial killer if you’re smart and dedicated enough to actually succeed at a multi phase prison breakout plan you deserve to just be free
They should make a Netflix show on the Alcatraz escape.
they shooouullldddd
Why ? The Shawshank redemption has already been made years ago.
Escape from Alcatraz movie is on Netflix.
Kal-Gelo Trinidad is it documentary-like?
AfroNinjas Actually it isn't... it's a classic movie from '79, it stars Clint Eastwood as Morris, seeing it would be good though, if you want an insight of the occurrence out of the movie.

As much as I dislike their criminal acts, I was rooting for them to escape. The Anglin brothers weren’t too bad of people, they often robbed banks at night or closed to ensure nobody was harmed and only used one weapon which was a toy gun.
well when you put it like that... ;)

Katie Bayliss c’mon. They didn’t deserve to go to Alcatraz
