This is by far the best image comparison I've seen with these two so far. Thank you for shooting real scenes and including the wave forms! 🍻 My takeaway is that the C70 definitely still has more of a "look", and might be a HAIR better in shadow detail, but I was surprised to see that I liked the C80s highlights and color a bit better. None of these very small differences though are nearly as impactful as full frame with triple native gain. I'm sold.
Thank you! I have been watching so many videos over the past week to help me decide on what get purchase between the two. You helped me finally make a decision.
Great comparison and test footage. With the C80 not having a dual gain sensor I thought there would be more of a difference between the two. Both camera's appear to capture a similar amount of highlight and shadow detail, props to Canon for that. The AF difference between the two is noticeable. Having used the C70 since launch, the AF is good, but felt slightly outdated even back then. There is a reason Canon has decided to continue to sell the C70, the footage from that camera has such a great feel to it, that being said, it's nice to see the C80 is not the step back in dynamic range performance everyone was worried about.
The subjects on the C70 footage have a three dimensional quality to them. On the other hand, I like how you can see people’s eyes more clearly on the C80 due to the sharper image.
The one thing I noticed with the c70 is a lot of the time the image looked better because it appeared softer and more pleasing, however I realized that a lot of the time I was looking at the image I couldn’t tell where the focus was. For the viewing public that might be a great thing, but I wonder what that’s like behind the camera
Interesting to see all the different takes. Everyone is seeing something a little bit different. For me, where other folks see filmic softness in the C70, I see lesser detail. And for me, sharpness and detail are different things. I own a C70 that I generally enjoy, but the image in certain lighting situations feels a bit dull ... like it needs that additional detail. Also, C80 is noticeably cleaner at 12,800 (check the gray shirts at 4:34). I would use that C80's 12,800 for documentary in a hot sec.
Thanks for making this, I watched on my big monitor, few things I see better is the ISO but I do like the colors I saw out of the C80 when you were filming your dog outside. Specifically in the shadows, it looked more pleasing. Also, how sharp your eyes were with the C80, that's always been tough in certain corporate scenarios with the C70.
Thanks for this. There is something about the C70 image that is (excuse the lame terminology) maybe 5-10% more filmic. Probably just the slightly softer/smoother look and marginally less magenta in the skin. Lots of benefits to the C80 for most of the work that I do, but when it comes down to it I highly doubt any of the clients and agencies I work for are going to notice a difference so I'm not rushing out to get a C80 at this point. Will see what the future holds but I'm glad I haven't got the immediate urge!
Absolutely. The main draw to the C80 for me initially was honestly just the added SDI. Which sounds crazy for that to be enough for me to want to upgrade haha. But the inability to run a proper clean feed out (for client / director monitor) while still sending the UI to my external monitor was always something that limited the C70 for me on a lot of shoots. So glad they added it!
@@JordanPulmano Yeah I was surprised they added SDI! I thought they would just skip out on it and suggest people get a C400 if they want that, so it's impressive that they did it.

Really great comparison. Thank you for including the waveforms, side by sides, and 1:1 clips. The C80 detail is clear on a 4k monitor, and I was pleasantly surprised that the dynamic range was pretty much the same as the C70. The C70 reaches a tiny bit more into the shadows, but the difference is subtle. As a C70 owner (and soon-to-be C80 owner), I'm looking forward to the better AF, increased detail, SDI, cleaner high ISOs, slightly larger bokeh for subject separation, and a few other workflow wins. Did you test the Super 35 120p on the c80 to compare that detail vs c70?
Agreed. You can see in some situation where the DGO is giving that “HDR” lift in the shadows but it’s very minimal. AF in the C80 is noticeably stronger. It still struggles in some low light situations which you can tell in a few of these, but in some other situations while shooting on the C400 (different camera but same AF system) it handles so much better than the C70!
@@JordanPulmano Great to know, I think the most exciting part for me is that Canon still made the sensors Dual Pixel, I personally find the smoothness of the focus pulls more desirable over sony, but that also could be a lens to lens thing possibly too. I know it´s a kind of niche question but maybe someone can help me.
What issues are you having with the low light and R5 II? It seems to be an upgrade over the R3, R5 and R5C. How does the dynamic range and image hold up to the C70? I also have the R5 II and had the R5C.
I just feel like the c70 looks better with less sharpness for your cinematic videos. Ond the other hand though, for commercial stuff the c80 is the way to go
@@PersonOfNote I wouldn’t say that simply adding a general blur filter can fully replicate the more cinematic look of the C70. However, you’re right that in some ways, you could use a diffusion or haze filter, or apply a similar technique to reduce the sharpness.
@@Phil-gz5bf I’ll say this, as I have both in my possession and just ran some ambient light tests last night and this morning. I shoot mainly real estate and architectural content and I was concerned that I’d lose that “cinematic” look and a noticeable amount of dynamic range. Put both cameras on the same settings, copy and pasted the grading so nothing would be different. Then I changed the tint a bit (c80 has a meganta-ish cast to it compared to the c70) and softened the image…I couldn’t tell the difference beyond the two after that .
great video. Coming from an R5C my upgrade will be the C80. I was tempted by the C70 but really want full frame and for what I shoot the softness didn't appeal. Triple base ISO is amazing will come in very handy
Definitely watch on a larger screen if you have the chance! When watching this back on my phone, I noticed that it has a weird flicker in the shadows during the lowlight tests which makes it hard to see some differences.
Thank you... this video just makes me love my two c70 cameras even more... But sadly I have to upgrade to the c400 (or the c80) the auto focus in low light kills me every time.. in some situations even have to switch to manual focus to not have the camera hunt for focus :P It looks like the new sensor is better at AF :) Just one last thing... you need to tell what lenses you shoot this on to make it usefull and to be able to compare anything :)
The best comparison video so far that I watched on this topic. Thank you for all the ISO tests in lowlight. Can tell that 12800 has far less noise on the c80, but in lowlight there is some noise (on your face) so It's not super clean like I was thinking. Your dogs are great models haha
From what I hear, ideally you would want to set Base ISO to 12800 then set the actual ISO to 6400 for cleaner image with less noise while still having the advantage of low light shooting.
Superb comparo-job all around, we thank you profoundly. Sort of feel sorry for pioneering EOS Cinema C70 buyers now, but hey, if you got yours in 2020 or 2021, you have got 3 or 4 good years use out of yours. Now, however, it's time to Marketplace or eBay that oldie but goodie C70.
Not me - I just rented a C80 for a week and used it for 3 paid jobs - live theater. I was shooting a C70, along with the C80 and four R6 MKII's. For my use at least, the C70 gives better results. With the dramatic lighting of live theater, I prefer the C70 image because of its' dynamic range. I also used them for interviews during the rental time and the C70 just has a more pleasing look for skin tones. There's a reason Arri Alexas are the other cameras with DGO sensors. Just bought another C70 - at $4,500 they are the best deal in cameras. Also, the introduction of Sigma RF lenses for APS-C (Super 35mm) means I can save additional thousands on lenses.

C80 looked like it was hunting a bit there on the autofocus on the last test.
My main reason for ordering one is the FF. But I definitely notice that magenta cast.
It's good that the magenta cast is such an easy fix in post though!
I wonder if this was a pre-production model with firmware that will be updated.
The C70 has 0.5 EV more DR because it is not a stacked sensor. It is the same with R5 M2 compared to M1.
I watched on my iPhone. I think I need to watch on a large 4k monitor. What say you about the quality differences?
Definitely watch on a larger screen if you have the chance! When watching this back on my phone, I noticed that it has a weird flicker in the shadows during the lowlight tests which makes it hard to see some differences.
if all you use is ef lenses and a speedbooster theres no need to upgrade
Thank you... this video just makes me love my two c70 cameras even more... But sadly I have to upgrade to the c400 (or the c80) the auto focus in low light kills me every time.. in some situations even have to switch to manual focus to not have the camera hunt for focus :P
It looks like the new sensor is better at AF :)
Just one last thing... you need to tell what lenses you shoot this on to make it usefull and to be able to compare anything :)
When’s the kitty cat gonna become the model
Great job! Thanks for putting in the time. Now can you do this vs r5ii lol
Thanks for watching man!! I have some R5II videos in the works too
@@JordanPulmano Thanks! Can't wait to see them
@@JordanPulmano when mate?
Seems to me that the C80 looks flatter, less creamy than the lush 3D C70 look. is it just me ?
The best comparison video so far that I watched on this topic. Thank you for all the ISO tests in lowlight. Can tell that 12800 has far less noise on the c80, but in lowlight there is some noise (on your face) so It's not super clean like I was thinking. Your dogs are great models haha
From what I hear, ideally you would want to set Base ISO to 12800 then set the actual ISO to 6400 for cleaner image with less noise while still having the advantage of low light shooting.
@@alexmainwaringgreat point, thanks!
Came for the C80. Stayed for the dog.
I should’ve titled this video “doggos captured in 6k”
C70 looks more filmic, C80 is a bit sharper and has better AF. The ISO difference didnt seem that serious until 25k.
did we see the same where he was filming inside the garage?
Dgo looks better. There is a reason why arri cameras have it
very nice way to test ,.. !! thank you for this video
Thanks for watching!
C70 looks better and more interesting 😐
C80 has also worse autofocus performancfe compered to C70, unfortunately. 😞
C80 has better dynamic range, finally Canon comes closer Sony A7S III
Unfortuntely, in the contrary. Less DR than C70, about 0.8 stops.
C70 has better dynamic range than an A7SIII and the C80 has less dynamic range than the C70....I guess you own an A7SIII, am I wrong?
no 4K RAW on C80,.. its a joke isn't it, canon cripple hammer at its best ,... hahahah
There is 4k raw.
@@dushyantbhatt9345 who the hell said there wasn’t 4k raw on c80? lol
@@dushyantbhatt9345 the cripple hammer on the c80 is the no CF and no 6k60 internal.
@@JordanPulmanoDo you mean 6K RAW? Or cropped S35 RAW? The R5II has “SRAW” and it’s full of artifacts
@@JordanPulmano there is cropped right ???
Superb comparo-job all around, we thank you profoundly. Sort of feel sorry for pioneering EOS Cinema C70 buyers now, but hey, if you got yours in 2020 or 2021, you have got 3 or 4 good years use out of yours. Now, however, it's time to Marketplace or eBay that oldie but goodie C70.
I just sold my brand new C80 for an other C70. :-)
