Update: You CAN change the ISO in the raw controls in Resolve. You need to change the Decode Quality to "Full res - Canon" and then you can change the ISO. Huge thanks to @TomislavMoze for letting me know. I couldn't figure out how to do it when I was editing this video.
I think the R5C offers a tremendous value for the price. Having the ability to take superb stills, yet also having the cinema OS menu with unlimited recording in a smaller form factor is amazing. Not to mention that it has an EVF, which is sadly lacking from the C70/C80! I'm really hoping that Canon releases an R5C II in the future, and I think there would still be a big demand for it (despite the R5 II already being out). There's enough to differentiate the R5C line from the R5 II (built in fan, cinema OS, no ibis, more video tuned, etc.). Canon, please release an R5C mark II.
I could not agree with you more! Love the R5C, and I'm not even a photographer, just strictly video. The 8k with downsampling, timecode, cinema OS, it's awesome. Can you imagine a newer model with a full-sized HDMI, Clog2, and, who knows, maybe an SDI out? That thing would sell like hotcakes.
Everybody here is selling them selves a dream so they don’t have to spend the extra money on the c80. I own both. I’ve done real world comparisons. The dynamic range is barely noticeable. If you really want your c80 footage to look c70ish all you need to do is drag your tint slider and bring your sharpness down by about 30% and voila. The images look identical. What does matter here is that the c80 is full frame so i dont need to spend thousands of dollars of new lenses and the noise performance is significantly better in low light run and gun situations.
As a Canon user I have to admit I'm really underwhelmed by the C80 performance. I don't know doesn't seem like it's worth the money. Thanks for putting this video together. I know how much time it takes to make something like this.

Hi Josh, quick question for you about the C80 - I have one, and have noticed the wheel around the set button has more play or movement in it than a mirrorless camera like the R3, for instance (when I say movement I don't mean the actual rotation of the wheel, but instead how it moves a bit more than I'd expect when you push it side to side, up and down, etc) . And the rear dial on the C80 seems to be "looser" or at least move more easily than the dial on the top, which has more resistance. Is this similar to your experience? It doesn't bother me all that much as the dials/wheel still work, but want to make sure I don't have a defective camera haha.
The rear dial which is on the upper right of the back is very loose on the C70/C80. I actually usually disable it because I bump it way too easily. Overall I have never been super impressed with the build quality of the C70, I think they could have done a better job.

Canon... give us open gate and RAW highlight recovery on the C80 / C400!!!! As for C70 vs C80... honestly having used both IMO they're both great, with different minor pros and cons. I do feel the C80 is SLIGHTLY more versotile with the better rolling shutter, tripple ISOs, 6K and larger sensor for more lens choices / bokeh. But really it's all only only slightly nicer and probably not worth 'upgrading' if you have a C70 or find a great deal on a used C70. Great video :)
It just doesn't look good enough to get rid of my R5C. The C400 in Raw HQ looks like a major step up in image quality with better dynamic range, hope you can get one for review soon.
@@avx111 doesn’t stop it from being the same sensor. Canon just didn’t give the c80 the same recording options. Why would they? It would stop people from completely buying the c400.
I read that you have to change the ISO via the "base ISO" menu tab, which is why I made it a quick key. I got mine today, did some testing and didn't see any difference, noise wise, using that.

great review, I used the c70 for a TV show and felt it was a great camera just soft. I actually preferred the image from my Lumix s1 over it at the time. This c80 is definitely a upgrade.
Good overview. If only C80 had 6K 60 fps it would be a no brainer in acquiring it, but simply because of this small let down I wouldn't invest in it even despite the XLR, SDI, battery life situation. R5C with a small recorder like the F3 covers the XLR part (or like in my case a ZOOM H6 - more on the chunky side but there are 4 XLR ports on top of the mic attachment). I'm quite surprised and at the same time not in respect to the image quality. The cameras from 2-4 years ago have plateaued in respect to image quality. Sure there are some adjustments like the triple base ISO, however it's not as significant to warrant an upgrade. Obviously that comes from a perspective that one owns a 2-4 year old camera and not a 6-10 year old model. ND filters are definitely a good thing for run and gun scenarios and also if one is using EF lenses or old lenses with an EF adapted lens and having that RF to EF mount with the variable filter then it pretty much covers that aspect.
Thanks for this review. I was ready to buy a C80, but the fact that you can't shoot 6K in a compressed format is a dealbreaker for me. What a baffling omission from Canon for such an otherwise great camera. Going to stick with the R5C for now, but thank you for such detailed comparisons.
Hey buddy excellent work as usual but what do you mean? You have no control of the raw codec in davinci in term of iso. I have the R5mk2 when I raw I have no problem controlling the ISO in da Vinci resolve… was the same when I had the R51. Only cinema dng I didn’t have control of iso and that’s after converting it from Apple ProRes raw
Thanks. Yes, like I said, as of right now you can not control the ISO in Resolve with the 6K RAW LT. The ISO section is grayed out. I probably should have shown a screenshot of it. I am using Resolve 19.1.
Yup. You CAN change the ISO in the raw controls in Resolve. You need to change the Decode Quality to "Full res - Canon" and then you can change the ISO. I couldn't figure this out when I was editing it. I left a pinned comment at the top to let people know.
@@Josh_Sattin, thanks again. Not your version but resolve in general, so does it support the raw version of the C80, or do you think it's going to be like that forever? I tested C400 raw files in Resolve, and it had the ability to change ISO.
There’s a known bug with Cinema Raw Light that ghosts the ISO dropdown in Resolve. I’ve had the same issue with the C400. Even if you change to Full Res. Canon in the Raw control panel it doesn’t always work. This is an issue Blackmagic supposedly knows about but who knows when they’ll fix it.
Solid review. For the low light 12800 test you’ll see a bigger difference if you did the side by side in the evening with the 3 cameras. The well lit scene down plays the difference quite a bit, I find my c70 unusable above iso 3200 at night whereas the r5c looks good at 3200 and the c80 is even better. The gap is huge at 12800 with only ambient light outside (we shoot evening real estate videos with the 3 cameras so imo a much better use case for the iso).
I have my C400 still on order and use the R5c today. This review confirmed me not switching to a C80, that I should get the C400, and that I should hang onto the R5c as my B cam (although I found my R6ii in 6K RAW does better than the R5c in my over/under testing).
Josh - did you do any noise tests outside of RAW? I've seen so many mixed reviews on lowlight performance of this camera that it's hard to make a decision on what it can actually do.
I did not. I had to make a decision to make this comparison fair. There are so many combos of things to test so I this is what I decided to compare so I could see how the sensor performance of each camera stacked up against each other in their highest quality.
Yes! Waiting on my c80 bit this is the next best thing. Also I need to find the video to source for info, but referencing the hybrids not having a dual based iso, a canon rep specifically talking about the R5ii said the main reason it doesn’t have a definitive second base is software. Cinema eos is the only software they have that specifically designed for a second base.
In regards tot he triple iso, keep in mind RAW is giving no noise reduction in camera. These results get dramatically better with different codecs choice and even go up a perceptible level with a baked 709 color profile like wide dr.
That statement is true with any camera with different codecs and NR. I decided to test in raw to show the sensor performance and compare it against the other cameras.
did you black calibrate that c80 sensor? looks a bi too dramatic to be just casually that bad underexposed. it makes this test less accurate. page 44 manual of c80
C70 is a great camera. Used it for years. But got to were I would just use my R5c more bc the imagine was just too soft for certain commercial work. And really wanted the full frame. Ordered the c80 and am excited to get a couple upgrades from the c70. I think they are both great camera but there are trade offs for both. Just depends on what’s more important to you.
I think that in many videos it is taken for granted that one will expose each shot perfectly and the reality is very different. That the C70 in general has better performance when raising or lowering a not so perfectly exposed shot I feel that it continues to keep it as the first option in my case, the triple base ISO does not seem so attractive to me either, because again, to reach that perfect exposure it is better to have the entire ISO range available if they ensure less differences between them. AF and all the other details I feel that the C70 continues to perform extraordinarily considering obviously its current state with all the firmware updates. And above all, not a minor detail, if it continues to be equipped with a large number of top quality EF lenses and you add the speedboster, it makes you even more tied down. In a good way.
great review and comparison Josh. You've convinced me to just stick with my R5C and buy another one as b-cam. Currently in Australia the R5C new with 5 year warranty is $2950 USD compared to C80 $5200 USD so i'm just going to save my money
Wow, that’s an awesome video packed with valuable info! Thanks a bunch for all your hard work! But I noticed something a bit off. In the CineD tests (SNR2), the R5II came in sixth, right behind the Arri Mini LF, while the R5C was way behind at 46th. In (SNR1), the R5II ranked 10th, and the R5C was 56th. This is a huge difference, so why can’t we easily spot it? In your previous tests between them, which were pretty similar to this one, we didn’t see any noticeable differences. Oh, and by the way, all these significant differences only showed up in the XF-AVC codec, not in RAW.
This is why I have said this in many of my videos, the Imatest tests are only one way of measuring dynamic range. We also need to use our eyes and look at actual high dynamic range scenes (like my window test) and the latitude test. I compared these cameras in raw to see what they are actually capable of. You can then clean up the image with different codecs, in-camera noise reduction, noise reduction in post, etc. Gotta compare apples to apples. Thanks for checking out the video.
Thanks for this video! Do you have plans to compare the c400 to these same cameras (and maybe the r5 mk2)? Or is it the same sensor and the same results to be expected? I guess I was expecting a more impressive performance from the c80 with those triple native ISO’s.
We're trying to decided whether to upgrade our R5 to a C80 or R5 mk2. I know it's not a common comparison, but I've had a really hard time finding good info on what we can expect to gain or lose with an upgrade like that. We're attracted to build-in NDs, 6K oversampling, and hope the image is overall closer to the "fine" image from the R5 that we can't shoot in at 60fps like we do for most of our footage. The difference between R5 (and mk2) footage in fine vs standard mode is quite stark when you look at them side by side. Any insights as to whether or not C80 footage looks more like one or the other?
You're welcome. Yes they basically have the same operating system. You can change the noise reduction settings in the custom picture profiles. ruclips.net/video/bw5nhnxiQOc/видео.html
Hi Josh, fyi the canon multicam app works well with my C70 thru Edimax Ac1200 wifi adaptor and usbc conversion cable. Thanks for a great look at the C80, although you've cured my curiosity for it. C70 is still better for my use case. *sigh of relief*
Hey Josh! Question about the C80. What’s your feeling about using the LCD on this outside in bright light in comparison to something like the R3? The R3’s LCD is SO good, but you also have the EVF if needed. With the C80 not having an EVF, I feel like it’s really critical that the C80 has a badass LCD.
@@Josh_Sattin thank you for replying! I greatly appreciate how you’re doing these detailed breakdowns on Canon cameras in practical ways that’s not sensationalist. Do you think you’d do a R1 vs C80 for videographers video? That’s going to be my next purchase consideration.
Thank you for your detailed review Josh, just discovered your channel. As someone who helps non profits and end up doing photography too, I've been on my trusty 5dMKII with the original BMCC 2.5k! Any suggestions on upgrading? I was thinking of a c80 because for the first time I'm contemplating more of a documentary type camera even though I spent years chasing that 'mini arri' look... But then I think, I have to buy an adaptor for the new Canon cameras and the new BMCC 6k anyway, I'm not giving up my lenses - should I go a hybrid? I've really loved the special look of overexposing the 5dmkII 1/3 for photos. Seems I have more questions than answers still lol!
Been waiting for your review on the C80 for a while now. I am currently using a R5C, and since my work is growing I started thinking about getting a C80 for a second cine camera, NDs and triple ISO being my biggest selling points. How would you see such a combo?
Well all links cause an “address is invalid” pop up on iPhone. You then get redirected. The only links I can confirm are wrong are the studio lens links because they take you to black magic cameras. Also some pages take you to a B&H and Adorama logo and it’s not clear you are supposed to click on them.
@@Darkpill-2 I fixed the studio lens and studio camera. Thanks for letting me know. The other links are working properly. You have to click on either B&H or Adorama to see the product depending on the store you prefer to shop at.
Looking at the dynamic range test: From your previous testing between R5C and R5 II I guess that the R5 II would behave very similar in shadow noise compared to the C80. What do you think, Josh? Great tests by the way!
Question for Josh or anyone who would like to chyme in I’m looking for my next camera to be the camera for the next 10 years. Would it be ultimately better to invest in the C400 business wise more codecs to shoot in! Going from the R5C to the C80 doesn’t seem like an upgrade do to the flavors of codecs I get I can shoot 6K in mp4 on the C400.
@ I don’t really shoot much 6K I just know Premier can’t play it back smoothly for shit and needs proxies, but daVinci resolve seems to play it flawlessly. Render times are definitely longer than my usual 4K down sample to 1080 projects that I render out. I have an M2 Max pretty beefed up so it would also depend on what computer rendering on
Thanks for the great comp/review, Josh... Two things of note: there appears to be a pretty significant DR difference between the c80 vs c70 and it looked to me as if the c80 didn't clean up significantly at 12800. Maybe I'm interpreting what I saw incorrectly, but there didn't seem to be a huge low light difference in your tests between the c80 and c70...
You’re welcome. I export my videos at high bitrate but YT compression can be brutal on the sections comparing noise. The C80 does clean up at 12,800. Significant or not? Thats why I show these tests and let you decide. As I said in the video, C80 is cleaner at those higher ISOs than the C70.
Hi great video, honestly it looks like that the triple ISO doesn't make that much of a difference. The c80's footage looks much more noisier than the C70.
Man you're in NC?!?! I didn't realize! I was just shooting test footage and photos over at the Gardens this morning. Would love to buy you a beer and just talk sometime!
Great review! I will add a couple more features that the C70 has which C80 doesn’t. The C70 can display a LUT (EDIT: I’m referring to View Assist feature) on playback on the onboard LCD. It can also assign controls to the SELECT dial on the back. The C80 currently can’t do either of these things.
I believe the LUT implementation is the same on the C70 and C80 by using the look files. I was surprised that there wasn't a way to use the control wheel on the back of the C80 like you can with the C70. I was looking for it in the menus for a while. That did come in a somewhat recent firmware update to the C70 so I assume it will come to the C80 at some point.
Excellent work Josh. One thing. Carl @ ProAV and The Camera Guy both compared the C400 to the FX6 using the exact same shot and both found the C400 (I know C80 here) to be cleaner @12,800 with less color cast. I realize you are going from memory. All good. Your comments are great. This is perfect for Canon people on the fence with upgrades. Or not. Good stuff!
Not his fault, dedicated camera channels peaked 2010-2015 they do not 1m views in 1 week anymore and I watch all of them. If u average 2k to 40k views per video within 2weeks to a month that's pretty normal now a days. Some of the big ones average 15k to 70k within that time , none of them barely get 500k plus anymore It's the algorithm too, if you're not favored by it... well the youtube lottery is real Tech channels on the other hand are still crushing

You are very welcome. Glad the video was helpful for you. Thanks for watching!
You have to wonder if the Cine software needs a big upgrade in order to shoot open gate and if Canon is working on that.
@ maybe just for the c80. Strange. Any how. Still great content thank you.
@
Does it setting look like this when using raw. I know you are aware
Full res - Canon
Clip
As shot
Canon Cinema Gamut
Canon Log 2
800
Yup. You CAN change the ISO in the raw controls in Resolve. You need to change the Decode Quality to "Full res - Canon" and then you can change the ISO. I couldn't figure this out when I was editing it. I left a pinned comment at the top to let people know.
No iso control with raw files in resolve? the c70 has that option. Is that something that just needs an DR update? Thank you for the video.
You're welcome. Yes, there is no ISO control for the raw clips. I am using Resolve 19.1
@@Josh_Sattin, thanks again. Not your version but resolve in general, so does it support the raw version of the C80, or do you think it's going to be like that forever? I tested C400 raw files in Resolve, and it had the ability to change ISO.
I figured it out and left a pinned comment above.
@@Josh_Sattin thank you.
Can anyone tell me why when I put 8k on the r5c, there is this constant noise? Is there a way to avoid it? thanks!
Alright, you deserve my sub. I’ve been freeloading for a while now.
Thanks for the support!
Hey Josh, I have c80 and rf 35mm 1.8 stm and stabilator don’t work whit camera? Do know what are the reason?
Solid review. For the low light 12800 test you’ll see a bigger difference if you did the side by side in the evening with the 3 cameras. The well lit scene down plays the difference quite a bit, I find my c70 unusable above iso 3200 at night whereas the r5c looks good at 3200 and the c80 is even better. The gap is huge at 12800 with only ambient light outside (we shoot evening real estate videos with the 3 cameras so imo a much better use case for the iso).
Hi Josh, thank you for this review
👍🏻📸🌋🌴🍻☕
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
I have my C400 still on order and use the R5c today. This review confirmed me not switching to a C80, that I should get the C400, and that I should hang onto the R5c as my B cam (although I found my R6ii in 6K RAW does better than the R5c in my over/under testing).
Tease! Curious about the lenses you used and couldn’t talk about!
Did you perform auto black balance on the c80 to clean up the noise a bit before shooting?
Yes I did a ABB on all three cameras before doing the testing.
@@Josh_Sattinnice! Thanks Josh!
@ Makes sense, man. Appreciate your time putting these out either way. Happy Thanksgiving!
Great stuff dude
Thanks!
@@Josh_Sattin Totally understand, it was more for people coming in who haven't worked with RAW in general. Thanks for putting up this great content.
Yes! I guess everyone goes straight to the DR tests. lol.
did you black calibrate that c80 sensor? looks a bi too dramatic to be just casually that bad underexposed. it makes this test less accurate. page 44 manual of c80
Yes I did a ABB on all three cameras before doing the testing.
after watching this video. i'll deffinately buy the c
70.
I wonder how much dynamic range Canon could pull out of a full frame DGO sensor with C-Log2
Thanks! Glad the video was helpful for you!
$2950? That's unreal. It's still $3400 here in the US w/out that warranty.
Thanks for the review!!! would like to see the comparison between C80 and fx3/a7s3, I think many Sony shooters are interested!
You're welcome. Unfortunately this is the only video I plan on making about the C80. It was a loaner and I sent it back.
Is there more magenta in the C80 over C70 and R5C?
So fx6 or c80 for doc work..?
Both are great for doc work!
Glad I've bought the C70 then. Sonyish colors on the C80, bad noise and banding? no, thanks. Amazing review in any case, as always. Thank you.
I was so confused to find out to like fx6 color better compared to c80
C80 will look closer to the fine mode in the R5 since it is a 6K image oversampled to 4K. The R5 and R5II oversample from 8K.
Informative video thanks. Does the C80 have noise reduction controls settings similar to the R5C?
You're welcome. Yes they basically have the same operating system. You can change the noise reduction settings in the custom picture profiles.
ruclips.net/video/bw5nhnxiQOc/видео.html
CVP’s review of the C400 says it has a 13ms readout at 6K full frame 25p. Any idea why your results might be better with the C80?
I have no idea. I just report the results that I get with the camera that I have in my hands.
It is basically the best camera you can have at this moment.
It's good. Not amazing but not bad. I generally use an external monitor on every camera nowadays for paid work.
You're welcome. Unfortunately I don't plan on doing that comparison and I had to send the C80 back to B&H.
Lenses you can't talk about on RF mount!? WHAT DO YOU MEAN????????? 😯😯😯
🤫🤫🤫
You're welcome. Take your time with the research. There are a lot of cameras out there! C80 is a great doc camera though.
@@Josh_Sattin Thank you Josh!
Guess you haven't worked in resolve or with Canon RAW much, because you can change the ISO from the C80 RAW footage.
Please see the pinned comment above. Thanks for watching!
Been waiting for your review on the C80 for a while now. I am currently using a R5C, and since my work is growing I started thinking about getting a C80 for a second cine camera, NDs and triple ISO being my biggest selling points. How would you see such a combo?
Yeah well I had to wait for a loaner from B&H as I don't get cameras early. Yeah I think the C800/R5C is a solid combo. Thanks for watching the video!
Not all the links work or are correct in the description.
I'm sorry to hear that. If you could let me know which links aren't working I can fix them.
Did you have to repair your Canon C70 since your 3 years ago video or is it still good?
I don't have it anymore.
Brap ! Vibes 🆙
Just want to be crystal clear to audiences, C80 does not offer 4K RAW. Am I correct? If so, it's the same as R5C?
Did you use manaul iso or automatic?
Manual ISO control with the automatic base selection.
Dude. Thank you.
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching!
Looking at the dynamic range test: From your previous testing between R5C and R5 II I guess that the R5 II would behave very similar in shadow noise compared to the C80. What do you think, Josh?
Great tests by the way!
Thanks! I can't really comment on that without doing the actual comparison.
I experience a weird black out on the playback video whenever I bring the sharpness down to 0 in Davinci resolve
Anyone here experience this?
Question for Josh or anyone who would like to chyme in I’m looking for my next camera to be the camera for the next 10 years. Would it be ultimately better to invest in the C400 business wise more codecs to shoot in! Going from the R5C to the C80 doesn’t seem like an upgrade do to the flavors of codecs I get I can shoot 6K in mp4 on the C400.
C400 does not shoot 6k in mp4. Only raw. I own a c400!
@@LukeSchaeferFilmsreally is the 6 K render loooong???
@ I don’t really shoot much 6K I just know Premier can’t play it back smoothly for shit and needs proxies, but daVinci resolve seems to play it flawlessly. Render times are definitely longer than my usual 4K down sample to 1080 projects that I render out. I have an M2 Max pretty beefed up so it would also depend on what computer rendering on
@@LukeSchaeferFilmsI have a M1 beefed up. The 8K works fine once I turn the quality down a bit.
@ it’s a known issue though that the raw lite on the new cinema cameras doesn’t play back even in quality! My m2 can play r5 raw just fine!!
They need to make a 4K full frame C70 which keeps the good DR.
@@Josh_Sattin Got it. BTW your wedding footage is some of the best c80 footage I've seen. Happy Thanksgiving!
Thank you so much! Happy Thanksgiving to you too!
Hi great video, honestly it looks like that the triple ISO doesn't make that much of a difference. The c80's footage looks much more noisier than the C70.
Good video.
Thanks!
Hello David, I use the c70 and I cannot get a lut for playback. I'm in the latest firmware. Is that something new?
@@franciscobf I made a video about it: ruclips.net/video/mYxGKfHWxas/видео.html
@ do you have view assist enabled? Is the footage log? Are you looking at the camera’s LCD as opposed to an HDMI monitor?
@@franciscobf I’m talking about view assist as opposed to a custom LUT which bakes in a certain look.
C70 looks great.
I am still so confused that i am not digging c80 colors and i always loved canon since 5dii days
Or not. Good stuff!
Did they compare RAW or compressed formats?
@@Wildridefilms FX6 shoots internal RAW? I don't think that's an option.
Power of DGO Sensor? C70's color balance looks better!
"Welcome to your engagment shoot, I mean camera test!"
Definitely sharper than the C70. Not sure if that's a pro or a con. Or both.
Can’t believe I’m the third comment watching at 39 views currently wow
Not his fault,
dedicated camera channels peaked 2010-2015 they do not 1m views in 1 week anymore and I watch all of them.
If u average 2k to 40k views per video within 2weeks to a month that's pretty normal now a days.
Some of the big ones average 15k to 70k within that time , none of them barely get 500k plus anymore
It's the algorithm too, if you're not favored by it... well the youtube lottery is real
Tech channels on the other hand are still crushing
The biggest problem with C80 and C70 is the screen. It would be perfect if it was designed with a foldable and flip-side screen like the Lumix GH7.
