  • The Canon C80 is here, and it's got a whole lot of new features, a whole new sensor and is on a whole new level compared to the C70. The C80 is the first camera I've used that had the chance of taking the crown for best affordable cine camera on the market from Sony and their Fx6. So in this video I'm going to talk about the pros and cons of the c80 all the things that make it great, and wether or not it beats the Fx6. Check it out!

    Fun comparison. Unfortunately theres no camera manufacturer that's putting out anything thats SO much better than another brand, that makes it worth switching platforms. If you're a sony shooter, switching to canon, or vice versa, is not worth any extra squeeze. I mean even the best pros can't tell a difference between an fx3 and an $80k Arri in a blind test. Still fun talking about though 🙂

    I think the gripe about the form factor isn't totally fair. building the c80 up with monitors and what not isn't really what it's meant for. The c80 thrives with how it was designed to be used, minimal build. Built in screen, B cam to its proper cinema camera brother, the c400. The c400 is the camera to build on and is a proper comparison to the fx6

    • @thesavagefilmmaker
      @thesavagefilmmaker  2 месяца назад +6

      If used for a B-cam, no build out, it's a great camera. But the C400 is a much higher price point, to me C80 is Canon's Fx6. C400 is their Fx9 or even Burano. But for my budget I'd want this to be my A-cam.

      I wish they would have kept to the c100mkii body style. Because used prices on the c70 are so good, I still may pick one up. I just hate the body style.

  • @AMGETV
    @AMGETV 2 месяца назад +5

    Great points about the body style comparison. I like the image that Canon produces, but the form factor of both the C70 and C80 are too difficult to rig in a functional way. And esthetically they are unattractive to me. I have an FX3 and A7S3 and both are easier to rig with a cage and accessories, and there are a ton of fully functional rigging options to be found that also look and feel great when filming. But as far as the cinema camera body vs. hybrid issue, I also agree with you. As a result I purchased a BM Pyxis, and I am thoroughly pleased with the build and image that it produces. And all 3 of my cameras provide me with an open selection of lenses that I can pick and choose from. The E mount and L mount both leave me with a ton of options.

      Aesthetics of a camera are irrelevant. And rigging out with excessive accoutrements is unnecessary. All that matters is the image a camera produces and the skill of the cinematographer. We’re blessed/spoiled to be living in a time where all these cameras are better/more affordable than anyone could have dreamt of 20 years ago.

    C70 body design was one major point for me to get to Canon. If you need to film unrigged for unintrusive documentary this form factor beats all box style cams. It simply depends on your production style.

    • @thesavagefilmmaker
      @thesavagefilmmaker  2 месяца назад +1

      EF lenses aren’t native, they require an adapter, and theyre not going to provide the same snappy responsive autofocus as native RF mount glass. And that means the autofocus won’t come close to Sony e mount glass. Which I’m clear to point out. I have a lot of EF glass but it’s not going to provide the same responsiveness. Canon need to change their whole perspective if they want to compete with Sony on lenses.

      I would agree with Johnny about the FX3 in the cameras you mentioned.But if you have a higher budget then either the FX3 or the C400. I have the R5 C, and it's great but for doc work an FX3 or C400 would be the best two choices. (I say this because I just shot a doc with the R5C and while the image was great and I had no issues with my monitor or battery using my V-Mount rig, the issue was for me the audio, you HAVE to buy a tascam to effectively capture audio on a doc shoot with that camera) and the same would be the case for the R5 MKII and the other hybrid sony cams.
      The FX3 and C400 you don't have that issue, plus that cinema body is just better for rigging for that type of production to me, so FX3 hands down with the cams you mentioned, and if your budget is higher the C400

    As a dedicated Canon filmmaker and an owner from the C100 - C400 I think this is a rock solid review.
    I think (especially for documentary shooters) Canon's color science and overall image quality is simply more pleasing than Sony. It just feels more film like and dynamic. It's why I have stayed with them for so long and why I am still on board. I think their RF line is amazing. The 24-70 and the 24-100 2.8 are solid zooms and the RF 50 / 85 1.2 lenses are easily the best lenses I have ever used. But the cost is inexcusable. 3k per lens is silly and selfish. Luckily I make a lot of money and can afford them but I do think it's an unnecessary barrier.
    Sony really listened to users and from the FX 7 on they just made better overall cameras with less restrictions. I see why Canon lost so much of the market and it is frustrating to see so much less support and poorer innovations (AF etc).
    The C400 has really caught up with Sony on a lot of aspects and the triple base ISO is pretty remarkable. But unless they release 3rd party RF lenses soon I think the release of this and the C80 is going to fall a bit flat.
    Thanks for the thoughtful and funny review.

      Thanks mate, appreciate your perspective. I owned the Canon 5d markiii Canon c300 Mark 1, C200 and C70. I'm a Canon fan, they've just let their competitors fill in all the gaps they were confident nobody would be able to, and eventually slipped behind them as a result. Canon Prices, Canon cripple hammer, Canon 1st party exclusivity it all adds up over time and you can't count on image quality and colour science alone to keep you in the drivers seat. I really liked the image out of this, and the C400 looks amazing, but not amazing enough for it to be worth switching back from my current Sony life and incurring the associated costs. I hope they open the doors for 3rd party lenses properly again, because then it would be something to look at much more seriously. The Sigma stuff is a good start.

    -I loved working with R3D files when I had a Komodo but most of my work now would be burdened by raw file sizes. S-log does everything I need. If I really need raw I dunno that I'll be reaching for that tier camera anyways

      there is no need to switch brands honestly. At this point all cameras shoot great footage. The cost to sell and buy new gear isn't worth it. Both have great autofocus, look, glass etc. Its people looking to buy their first cinema camera that has to decide which system works best for them.

      Yep, C80 Raw lite is closer to R3D files and smaller file sizes, but still not as good as R3D. I think this would be quite tricky to balance on a gimbal because of its height and definitely worse to handle otherwise.

    I almost fell off my chair in that first scene with the C80 @ 128,000 ISO… but then I watched further and realized your error… You see I’m about to publish a new video about the R1 and your video would have totally invalidated my findings… Fun fact: The C80 and C400 use a modified R3 sensor. Canon’s all new sensor is the one inside the R1… and oh boy, what a sensor that is!

    Pricing wise, I can see why you didn't compare the FX6 to the C400. But I thought the C70 and C80 were meant to be kinda Gateway Cinema Cams for those DSLR or Mirrorless shooters looking for a similar body style with cinema camera specs??? Am I wrong??? So wouldn't the market for those two cameras while they may have some intersections be different anyway?
    I say that because the main grip here seems to be the body design and the fact they don't go full out on the codex due to the limits put on by an SD card. But I thought it should still be limited. And if you want a full blown cinema camera and not a hybrid, the FX3 is just that. Or if you have have more of a budget and experience with cinema camera systems then the C400? Or am I wrong?

    • @thesavagefilmmaker
      @thesavagefilmmaker  2 месяца назад

      A gateway cinema cam, can still be a cinema cam shape, it just has to be affordable and easy to use. As far as specs, ports and price go c70/c80 is Canon's Fx6 equivalent, so it should be compared to the Fx6. If Sony did a better job at making a more functional gateway cine cam in the Fx6 than Canon have in the C70/C80, then Canon should learn something from that. They also have an R5C, which suits your argument much more than the c80 does. So yes, I would disagree with you, but you're not wrong, because these are all just opinions and we can have different ones.

    I mean you are really trashing a body style that is very popular lol. FX3, c70, BMPCC are all wildly popular selling cameras. I think the c70/c80 is just trying to give the shooters who like that body style an option with the cinema features. If you don't like it, cool, I get it. But to trash the whole body style when clearly there is a market for it is crazy.

    • @thesavagefilmmaker
      @thesavagefilmmaker  2 месяца назад +1

      There's a difference between popular and practical. And just because something has been adopted, doesn't mean people should blindly adopt it. If camera companies don't get feedback, they make the same mistakes. If users don't know about the drawbacks of a camera they might make the wrong purchase. I'm just doing my bit for filmmakers like me (I mean I bought a c70) who maybe haven't thought this aspect through.

    • @thesavagefilmmaker

    Honestly, both the Sony and Canon top handles that come inside the box look retarded and useless AF - I'd never use one, and I am sure every videographer/filmmaker has another top handle that he uses as his preferred alternative.
    Also, cages for C80 should come anytime soon and give way more mounting options for mics etc.
    As for the form factor, I suspect Canon sticks with this shape for a second camera model now, aiming for the handheld run'n'gun social media creators (all that vertical stuff), so its basically holding a camera with a grip that is easy to just flip 90 degrees CCW (hence the screw hole on the side grip)
    I am a Canon shooter, and for me, the C80 would be the logical choice because the C400 is above my level, and I cannot afford to switch systems because of the volume of batteries, lenses etc, that are all Canon related. And balancing the camera is, well, a matter of balance. For example, a 24-105 2.8 should be a good balance against the weight of the C80 body + a Vmount + some rods etc
    Gotta admit that a bit more boxy design would've been more welcome, but hey, you work with what you have, and I find the C80 to be a pretty good tool for its price

    Good call about the shape of C70/80. really, not many ppl addresses it. I think the reason why Canon created this weird shape is because they wanna keep their production plan as a hybrid camera production ( photography and video). Basically, Canon cannot beat Sony or Nikon on the photography side but still doesn't wanna give up. They even started creating the lenses for both sides. That is, no company has done that before. Even the C70/80 line is focused on Cinephotophy but still uses its iconic photography camera layout to build.

    Are you kidding me? First, it is ISO 12800 and not 128000. This value is not available on any camera, and well, you don’t have to be extra deep into camera technology to know that as values are mathematically predictable. But then: the form factor? For real? You are comparing the wrong cameras anyway. It is FX 6 against C400 and FX3 against C80. Yes, that tiny FX3 that shot a Hollywoodmovie, and nobody complained about its form factor, even though it is tiny and there is certainly no perfect balance on the rig. And yes, then things start to get really unfair, and there is no real comparison, as the C400 can run against the Burano and will not be too far off for a fraction of the Buranos price. But that’s how it is and we will see how Sony responds. But stop doing such bs comparisons for no reason.

    • @thesavagefilmmaker
      @thesavagefilmmaker  2 месяца назад +1

      Yup, ISO number had an extra zero, absolutely correct. But comparing an Fx3 to a C80? No way. Fx6 vs c80 is the closest in features, price and specs. This isn't a BS comparison, if I'd compared the c80 to an Fx3 - now THAT would be a BS comparison. But each to their own my friend.
