- This generation of consoles has definitely been an interesting one, I think now is a good time to talk about what went wrong with Microsoft and why Sony is doing so well. So here it is! A full explanation. And also, spaghetti. Because I always have to make the description of my videos just a little bit weird or off putting.

For the record, I'm not a fanboy as I enjoy all consoles, but I definitely agree with everything you stated. The irony behind this was that I bought the Day One X1 back in November 2013 and the ONLY reason why was due to the revitalization of Killer Instinct. Had not it been for that, I would've bought the PS4 a week prior.
Besides that, I feel like Sony learned from all the mistakes they made with the PS3 and made sure they corrected those mistakes with the PS4. Hopefully, they continue on this path with the PS5.

MidKnight Storm KI is life! I love KI and halo, seriously debated on purchasing a one s but decided to wait because I couldn't afford a console at the time. By the time I had the funds to make a purchase, most of the games I wanted to play were on the ps4. Halo was ruined and KI, I believe, could be played on the pc. So I purchase a ps4 instead.
Though Sony improved on some of the things they lacked in the previous gen, they took two things away that I really love about the ps3. backwards compatibility and a Blu-ray player were features which I used often and didn't want to see go.

You still have to pay for online expect for free games which i do hate that xbox does this. But its wasn't just games that beat xbox. It was the price from the start. The dumb drm stuff and targeting the wrong audience. But things are changing and im really looking forward to this new generation ps5 and xbox series x feels neck on neck to me. Now we just wait.

What I love is that it's not just PS4 is doing well only because XBOX initially fucked up but because they took great care in this generation and they're heavily rewarded for it.

It’s kind of incredible that Xbox in a matter of days handed over the console generation to Sony like someone giving another person the keys to the city and insulting people.
Good summary, but I feel you left out the biggest issue holding back current Xbox; abysmal 1st party.
Sony invested a lot last gen in building its studios in an effort to catch up to the 360. Both in talent and a work environment that encouraged creativity. Seriously, how many other publishers would have allowed an FPS studio like Guerrilla to make Horizon? Now Sony is in Nintendo's 1st party league.
Microsoft in contrast makes very poor publisher decisions. They try to run their first party studios like a factory. Forcing them to make what charts say was popular last gen. Hell, their two "more" successful studios are completely built around single IP's now (Halo & Gears).Black Tusk(rebranded to The Coalition) was supposed to be building a new AAA game, but that instantly got canceled the second Microsoft got the rights to Gears of War. Not to mention the studios they gutted like Rare and closed like Lionhead. I feel no fact better summarizes how bad Microsoft is to its studios than Bungie running to Activision to escape them. BUNGIE THOUGHT ACTIVISION WAS A STEP UP, *ACTIVISION!!!*
As to why Microsoft is so s**** at this, I believe it comes down to the fact they are not an entertainment/consumer company at heart(or the top). Their bread and butter, is selling over priced software packages to companies by the thousands. They are a corporate company first, consumer company second. The entertainment industries take a very different management structure to corporate.
Nintendo (a century old toy company) and Sony (a consumer product [media & electronics] focused corporation), were naturally better suited to create, creative media.
TheNinjaDC I think that’s what breaks my heart the most about Microsoft this generation. Not just the fact that their first party IP’s are either fucking trash or completely nonexistent, but the fact that they chased off their golden studio *(Bungie)* because they got stuck in their ways and power hungry over what the Halo franchise *USED* to be. Only to find out, that Halo has sadly and quickly fallen from its former glory.
I guess Sony does have an unfair advantage, seeing as how 90% of their company is entertainment, movies, tech, etc.

Yeah I agree, Microsoft needs to make more true exclusives to the Xbox, or at the very least, make them timed exclusives, because I feel like the pc realease of Xbox exclusives is just a quick immediate fix to get more players.
Microsoft screwed it completely at E3 2013. After the PS4 announcement I think the console was rushed for E3 and to be released later in the year. The original xbox one was ridiculously massive, it was even larger than the OG Xbox from the 6th gen and still didn't have an integrated PSU. Further more from this the UI was terrible up until recently and now there is no exclusives worth buying the system for.
Many more reasons but I think E3 was the main thing.

Killer Instinct was not a complete games when it was released, Halo is not a release tittle, Sunset overdrive is not a release title as well. YUP IT'S NOT WORTH IT.

Edmundo studios cmon i mean i get it but pc is very expensive though you get an x for 500€/$ and with a pc power for 1100-1300€/$ and besides most of them are just on Win10! Which is called Xbox the hardware these days are like pcs and soon or later you will be able to play with m/kb on xbox ( already confirmed by xbox poland) which i dont like so xbox is basically going to be a gaming pc
*For an example, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, is a game you'd never in your god damn lifetime find on a Microsoft machine.*

Filip Westerberg You’re absolutely right. All the power in the world means absolutely nothing if you don’t have the raw talent to utilize it properly. We have yet to see any exclusive games on the Xbox One X that look as gorgeously jaw-dropping as Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, or God of War. Despite the fact that the One X is more powerful than the PS4 Pro. This generation has literally become a mirror of the 6th generation. With the OG Xbox being the most powerful console, while the PS2 was way more popular with better and more games.

I’ve had all four eighth gen consoles, starting in late 2014. I definitely enjoyed my PS4 and Wii U (yes I had the failed Nintendo console), but I didn’t really have many good games for my Xbox One S.

How are the numbers today in 2024?
Xbox changed a lot. They have made a lot of smart move in the last couple of years. They have also really open their platform expanding into other hardware like the Switch.
I recently bought a PS4 Pro and am noticing a boost to FPS on Project Cars 2 as well as more stable fps for all games and now with the latest firmware update I have noticed a significant improvement to the graphical quality in all of the games I play with Super Sampling enabled. Well worth the trade for the more powerful PS4 Pro.
Yeah that super sampling patch/boost mode makes the pro worthwhile for 1080p users now.

No need to watch this. Plain and simple, PS and Switch are beating and will continue to beat Xbox due to the battalion of AAA exclusive titles they both produce and because of Microsoft deciding they are going to put all of their first party titles on both Xbox One and PC. Without exclusives a console will not thrive, power means nothing if there is nothing to play. If you own a PS4, Switch and a PC you can play any game available on the market. That means that if you already own at least a moderately decent gaming pc the Xbox One holds zero relevance.
What? Sure Sony is on top but Nintendo is killing it with Switch. Even if you don't like Nintendo it won't change the fact that as long as they have Mario, Zelda and Metroid they will always make money.

I don't think so at all. As far as the early PS3 days, what are you even talking about? The only mistake they made was charging $500 for the original fat version of the PS3, they still dropped tons of amazing exclusives, had free online and revolved the console completely around gaming, unlike 360 that even back then was trying to make the console a home media center revolving around apps and streaming services. Let's not forget the PS3 was more powerful than the 360 was also. Before you claim fanboy let it be known I owned a 360 and upgraded to a 360 elite. I didn't even buy a PS3 until the PS3 slim came out. All my friends had a PS3 but I just couldn't afford it. No matter what anyone says, Sony gives a shit about their consumer base, the only thing they piss me off about is that they still haven't given us the ability to change our profile name even though everyone on the planet has been asking for it for years.

It's a good thing Nintendo Switch is doing good, so we don't have to worried about Sony PlayStation getting Lazy and Cocky. I would have bought a Xbox One but they have said already that their games will come to the PC Windows 10 and some on Steam like Quantum Break. For me gaming is PC and PlayStation. But it's good Nintendo is making Sony PlayStation a little bit nervous.
And that was actually very cheap since, at the time, a blu ray player had cost way more than the launch ps3. But the one downside was that the ps store at launch was awful....it was like a bad internet browser lol

I do agree that 2009-2010 was really the beginning of the outcome of this gen. Sony had the PS3 slim, Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, Infamous and God of War out at this time, with even more exclusives coming. Meanwhile, Microsoft focused heavily on the Kinect, and the Xbox 360 being an entertainment device rather than a games console. After Alan Wake in 2010, what did 360 have exclusive-wise that WASN'T Halo, Gears, or Forza?
The Xbox One reveal and E3 2016 definitely hurt the Xbox brand the most though, that's when "Xbox One and Windows 10" became a thing.
Xbox One X I feel could have sold better had Microsoft NOT cancelled Scalebound or delayed Crackdown 3. (Not saying Xbox One X failed or that it could have dethroned PS4)

2010 really was the year that Sony turned things around for the PlayStation brand. I remember seeing Uncharted 2 at Sony’s 2009 E3 press conference, saving up for a couple of months and going out to buy a PS3. When, only a few months prior, I was dead set on copping a 360. From that point onward, PlayStation completely evened the playing field for the rest of the generation. Only to completely dominate in the 8th generation with the PS4.

This couple of months Monster Hunter World, Nino Kuni 2, Shadow of Colossus, God of war, Detroit, Yakuja 6 for every month as exclusive just for PlayStation 4. So how the hell u can buy anything else. U CV and play all ur third party games with better visuals than Xbox. Xbox was output 700p tk 900p where PS4 was 1080p for the base console. It made no sense that 100$ less PS4 console doing better than Xbox one. First year was mediocre then PS4 do what they have done with every generation. EXCLUSIVE GAMES after games they released on PS4.
That's why I LOVE PlayStation. It clearly show there first party game developer r incredible. They r talented n just look at God of War. It blew my mind away that no loading screen n thise visuals r incredible. They shown once again when Xbox One x released more powerful console but they have no game taking advantage. Where PS first party developer show u can do incredible job if u talented developers.
I dont want to even talk about PSVR. Xbox one has no VR support when PSVR compare to PC VR half the price. They r giving us games like RE7 n that game work perfectly for PSVR.
PlayStation is my first choice since they release for the first time OG PlayStation. Those days we played some of the best innovative games.

Not be paying fees just to basically stream a game. I like buying games on sale. Speaking of games, Playstation has soooo many awesome exclusive games to play, where xbox has very few exclusives. Most of the games on xbox are cross platform games, so you dont need xbox to play them. I just dont like wasting money, I have Playstation and xbox but honestly I dont think I will ever buy another xbox. There us no selling point. No exclusives. Let's be honest... fanboyism played a large role. Xbox had a bad launch, but nobody cared they turned it around. "But... but... sales numbers" is pretty much the only thing you hear any time Xbox does something positive. It perpetuates. And people keep pounding that narrative. I own and love both, my Ps4 and Xbox One... but so many people overlook one of the consoles for no reason other than fanboyism.
It's because only one can be the "Best", just like no children are equal, there is always favoritism. Even if it's inadvertent. And Sony have gained favor with all the buyers who parent it.

I have both consoles and my siblings their Switch, I like how Xbox is waaaay more consumer friendly than Sony and Nintendo but that just isn't enough if you don't have the games most people want.
I really enjoy Cuphead, Halo and Forza but if someone has a gaming PC, I don't think they'll get an Xbox.
What is your definition of consumer friendly?
This is a long one and I apologize in advance, but I'll try to explain why I think Xbox is the most consumer friendly console right now.
At the start of the generation (like he describes in the video) I would have considered Microsoft one of the most anti-consumer companies in the gaming industry. The always-online, used game DRM, 24-hour check in, etc. were absolutely stupid and Microsoft should still feel ashamed for even attempting it. I'm glad they are losing the fight, because it has made them humble.
Now, Microsoft has completely changed things around. They are very pro-consumer, with the 360 backwards compatibility, new Xbox games with Game Pass, Game Pass being only $10 to play tons of awesome games, better console with the X, PC and Xbox cross play, etc. The only thing they really still lack is quality AAA exclusives. Sony and Nintendo have that in spades. I'm also disappointed they don't get awesome third party exclusives like Nier and Nioh. Why Xbox has completely given up on bringing awesome Japanese games to the U.S. I'll never understand, as that is a huge factor into why I largely still prefer the PS4.
Anyway, back to why I think Microsoft is more consumer friendly than Sony or Nintendo.
Well, Sony has PSNow, which is already stupidly expensive in my opinion, and they don't let you play your old ps3 games you already purchased. I have tons of PS3 games in my digital library that I cannot play on my PS4 without having to pay a PSNow subscription. There's also the vast PS1 library I have on my PS3 and there is NO excuse I cannot play them on PS4. I'm happy they're adding trophy support to PS2 games, but there are so many awesome PS2 games not on the PS4. There's just no excuse, and I chalk it up to apathy due to being in first place, and greed because they want to sell the games at higher prices as "remasters".
As far as Nintendo goes, they've always been bafflingly anti-consumer in their online practices. Also, their online is just terrible. I shouldn't have to buy an NES game for the Wii, then have to buy it AGAIN (albeit, at a cheaper rate) on the Wii U, then AGAIN on the 3DS, then probably AGAIN on the Switch. That's greedy as fuck and fuck them for that. They're also going to start charging for online now? They sure as shit better get a better online store and profile setup, with cloud storage and digital records. As of right now, my Zelda saves are saved to my Switch! What if my Switch dies or breaks? Fuck Nintendo sometimes, man. Just baffling they haven't figured out online after all this time.
As it stands, Microsoft has the most consumer-friendly console, with a relatively cheap barrier for entry with the Xbox One S, or the most powerful console with the X, a huge library of titles available on Game Pass for only $10 a month, All the EA games available for $5 a month, cross buy/play with PC, a vast library of backwards compatible 360 games that you don't have to rebuy, and other small benefits like a 4k Blu Ray player and TV compatibility. The ONLY thing Microsoft is lacking at this point is awesome AAA exclusives and Japanese third-party exclusives. Sony has become complacent again in first place, but I will say that they are killing it with the exclusives. There is no question that they are hammering out classic after classic, with Bloodborne, Persona 5, Kingdom Hearts collections, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4, Shadow of the Colossus, etc. That is what is keeping me coming back to PS4. Nintendo is off in their own world as always and the saving grace of the Switch is its portability. It's what the Wii U should have been, so now we just need cheap, easy access to ALL of their past libraries, NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, and Wii U should all be on the Switch at reasonable prices tied to an online account with cloud storage and allow for future backwards compatibility with their next console. That would cement Nintendo as a major player again in my mind. As it is, the Switch is simply a way for me to play Zelda and Mario, as the Wii and the Wii U were.
I disagree. I can’t think of any recent PS exclusive games developed by Sony that have been a $60 beta at release. Microsoft has. Look at Sea of Thieves. Sony and Nintendo at least refuse to put out unfinished games and have decent digital sales (we’ll give Nintendo a little while to catch up to Sony) on their digital stores. They are far superior to Microsoft. I can understand that you love Microsoft, though, because of their exclusives.

It took me almost 3yrs after the launch of xbox one to get the one S because I wasn't feeling the 2013 xbox one because of what Microsoft was trying to do with the system and it's games. I've always been on PlayStation since the beginning and in 03 I got the original xbox and sold it after 2 weeks because I hated the Duke controller and didn't really play games on the original xbox because most of my games we're on PS2, I stuck with PlayStation after that. Now owning the pro and one S I still play more on my ps4 then my one S because of the games and ecosystem which I put a lot of money into and my friends and family play on PlayStation so that leaves my one S sitting unused but I'm waiting on State of decay 2 to release and plug up my one S to play!!
I own the Pro and One X and use the Pro way more because the Xbox dashboard is still completely shit. It's slow and full of adds and dumbass fortnite/pubg streamers and it chugs every time you scroll to fast.

I had og xbox and 360 right from launch...was a big xbox fan...was planning to get the next xbox without a doubt.
Then they announced xbox one with kinect and all that other crap....also with higher priced lower powered system than the ps4...i was like no no no and no!

But i still kept my 360 for about 6 month before i got my ps4.
But regardless of all that there were 2 things ms reps said that got my goat.
Someone said to ms i want to play 360 games on my xbox one....ms said tough...get a 360 if u want to do that!
People didnt want kinect....ms said....in their words..."its impossible for xboxone to work without the kinect they are integral to each other.
And then lo....ms doth proclaim a short while later after being trounced by ps4....that yes the kinect CAN be removed from xboxone...which is wat they did.
But to end this off with ms did all they did because they HAD to not because they WANTED to!

To me it's all pretty simple. Sony gave us a top quality machine and then backed it with top quality games. Games are by far,the most important factor of any console. I think I can safely say any neutral gamer would happily have a console that perhaps had slightly less graphical and/or processing power than it's rivals if they knew they were going to get some truly amazing exclusives to play on it in it's lifespan. I know I would. It's why I game. My point being,games are ultimately make or break a console so if you can provide some great one's then folk will buy the platform to play them on.

The 7th generation is what really started to throw my love for video games out the window, and I think Microsoft and American business models are mostly to blame, this is when all the DLC, Microtransactions, season passes and you got to be online to play really first appeared, plus the we'll just release a broken game and patch it later mentality. Also single player games started to become more water, dumbed down in favour of online multiplayer. If it weren't for Sony staying somewhat true to gamers, I think we would all be playing games with a camera in are faces, being constantly recorded, so Government agencies around the world can better spy on us.

I was still playing on an Xbox 360 until March of 2018, so I didn't really have a side at that point. Mainly because I'm in my 30's now, and didn't really have time to play. But when I decided to finally upgrade this year, I looked at the exclusives and PS4 just had the better games. I never really liked Halo and haven't played a Gears of War game since GoW 2.
All the games I played on the 360 were available on both consoles, along with some current gen games. And a few that i wanted to play were Playstation exclusive. Honestly, it was a no brainer. I don't care about 4k or FPS, but I know other people do. Both consoles have their pros and cons, and picking one is just personal preference. I think it's so silly how much bitterness exists between console gamers. Play and let play.
MS is implementing all of the practices that were revealed back in 2013. How do you think game pass is gonna work? How do you think "the power of the cloud" is going to work? Both of those will require online connectivity. The more games they make that require the cloud, the more games that appear on game pass the more and more their vision comes into fruition. The biggest difference is currently right now both are an option. You don't have to use these. But they never let go of those ideas. They are trying to kill the used game market with game pass. They are still pushing for an always connected device with game pass and cloud. All they did was learn not to shove it down our thoughts at one time. Instead introduce it slowly as possible. End goal is the same though.

+Rockymann27 Technically no, it's emulation that supports a handful of their past system games. Eventually it could be all of their worthwhile games, but if there is a remaster on the horizon they'll probably skip it. If you have an xbox x it actually highly enhances these old games, so it's the definitive version.
