Hi everyone! Hope you enjoyed the video, one topic I'm seeing in the comments a lot is, what about emulation for PS2 and PS1 Backwards Compatibility? Now while there isn't a concrete answer for this we can only go based off conjecture but here's my 2 cents: It's likely a few things that add up to the reason why Sony doesn't do either and I think the main one is liability. PS1/PS2 had massive libraries and making an emulator for both that consistently works for 95%+ compatibility and keeping it updated for years to come with new PS4 Firmwares is probably something Sony just doesn't want to put up with. Hardware manufacturers typically have a strict quality control and QA process. It's not like an open source emulator where you're at your own discretion to experiment and see what works and what doesn't. Sony (and Microsoft) want to release finished and working products. This is why Microsoft doesn't just flip a switch with their emulator and allow everyone to play every Xbox 360 game. Microsoft knows some games won't work, and they don't want someone to try a game and have it crash making that consumer think their console is faulty. They control it and make sure each game works well. Now if you have an older PS4 with custom firmware you can get a working PS2 emulator out of the PS4 and I've heard it works well with a lot of games. But again, it's just a matter of Sony not wanting to be liable or keeping it updated with new official firmware releases, or worrying about copyright/licensing issues. So instead, they have a small team manually working on PS2 games and up-resing them, giving them trophies, and selling them on the PS Store. This goes back to the Microsoft thing, Sony is controlling it so they know the product is good and finished. Only difference here is Sony likes selling them to you, and Microsoft had the good will to let consumers use their old discs. Which I think is really awesome of them. But based on how many premium PS2 games Sony has released so far, I'd say they don't really have many people working on them. As for PS1, again, I think it's just liability and them not wanting to put the resources into it. Given that there's no PS1 'classics' on PS4's PlayStation Store, or PS Now, I'm inclined to say Sony has data suggesting not many people are playing PS1 games today. Which coincides with what Sony has publicly said many times - 'backwards compatibility is often talked about but hardly ever used'. Again, I'm assuming here, but I think the company likely saw little engagement from PS3 having PS2 SoC, PS2 Classics, PS1 Emulation, and PS1 Classics. So they made the decision to focus on strictly PS4 and use PS Now to future proof themselves. Now I know Microsoft has released data suggesting Xbox One gamers are using BC a lot, so who knows at this point. But I'm sure if we're grading on a curve here I'm still inclined to say a vast majority of Xbox One play is Xbox One titles. Hope this clears up some unanswered questions regarding PS1/PS2. I do find it odd that Sony hasn't pursued them more, they're both beloved platforms to many and Sony could easily repackage many of these games to people. But there's gotta be a reason for why they aren't doing it, and I think it's just a matter of putting all their effort into PS4 games, Streaming, and the longterm future instead of the minority. I hope that attitude changes though.
Mystic Mystic This reason is invalid because the PS3 had full PS1 compatibility. Also there are plenty of PC Emulators on the x86 architecture that the PS4 is also based on that also runs basically all PS1 games as well. So at the very least they can have PS1 compatibility. It can be implemented pretty simply. PS1 games run on even the PSP via Sony's internal emulator they created. Its just way more profitable for them to produce a $100 replica PS1 with 20 ROMs on it and resell it to the public making millions in sales
It's funny how people are having a go at Sony for not bringing out a console with BC for just a few hundred bucks... yet Apple come out with a new product every year that costs a huge amount (Mac or iPhone/iPad), and within years those items are obsolete, yet no one is kicking up a fuss lol. Also, try playing an N64 or GameCube game on a Switch. A ton of XBox games have issues when played on an XBox 360. I believe only a small selection of XBox games can be played on the XBox One.
Great video. Personally I'm over it now. I wanted backwards compatibility at the time but I've sold my games and moved on now so it would be too little too late in my opinion.
+TheGreatOne The problem isn't the PS4's inability to emulate PS1. It's that the PS4's optic drive doesn't read Compact Disc. So it can't read PS1 games or CD-based PS2/PS3 games, Video CD, and audio CD.
+Jason Yip: That is a whole different comparison. Smartphones & PC has a way larger consumer-base where people are willing to pay premium for those general-use device where as video game console is marketed as video game-dedicated device with much fewer consumer-base compared to smartphones, PCs and laptop which the average consumers isn't willing to cough up that much for gaming dedicated console.
i have to agree, my ps3 broke my cat kicked it off my tv stand and broke it, i was like well fuck now i have no choice but to buy another ps3 so i can play my large library.
No PS3 emulation is reasonable, but there's no reason the PS4 can't emulate the PS2 or PS1. Even though PS2 backwards compatibility was removed from later revisions of PS3, PS1 backwards compatibility was always there up until the most recent PS3 model.
I would love to at least see PS2 and PS4 backwards compatibility. Problem with the PS3 is that it's damn near impossible to emulate on most devices due to the nightmarish supercomputer cell processor :/
@@GunsNGames1 removing the ability to play music cds, that is only because Sony wants you to buy your music from them. it's a shit tactic to force you to use all of their eco system.. like how when you buy music from apple. it's a bitch of a time getting the music to some other platform.
#1 reason for PlayStation to not be backwards compatible is that they'd rather sell you a game you already own instead of just reading a disc that makes you download the game immediately and for free. PS2 classics in a nutshell.
As someone who’s had an Xbox 360 and then switched to PS4 because it’s better than Xbox one POC. That’s the only feature that I’m jealous of, however I’d played most of those old games and I’m not going to pay $500 for a new console to play old games and their exclusives suck. Unlike PS4 at least they’ve made new exclusive ass kicking games, a. We type of nostalgia and filling the void Xbox left me.
Not even gonna lie if the exclusives on the PlayStation weren’t this godly I think microsoft would’ve won this generation as well like they did last gen
I agree about how complicated the PS3 cell would be to emulate. But that doesn't explain why they are making you re-buy PS2 games rather than letting you use your disc. I think Microsoft are also just more generous than Sony.
Sony said it's because it added trophies, upscale it to 1080 p at 60 FPS, you can shareplay and stream it...do you even look up this stuff at all or are you just sitting there playing with your peter popper all day?...
First of all. Your wrongly assume I didn't already know that stuff. Second. Your rude, grow up. And last. So what? There is no reason they have to have shareplay and trophies for bc and they could reserve that for digitally bought copies. I am pretty sure more time and cost went into making the Xbox One play 360 games.
Who gives a fuck PlayStation still winning nobody cares for backwards compatible only stupid Xbox fanboys make this relevant cause the Xbox is trash and has no games. Man RUclips got y'all making shity as videos for clicks
Then they would have to make every ps2 game download off of psn to the harddrive and make the disc act as a licence key. They could do it but they aren't doing it possibly due to the hardware not being able to detect the correct disc for the download, while microsoft could of had it built into the hardware from the very beginning on the xbox one. What I'm unsure of is if the disc detection thing is done through software or hardware. If it's done through only software then yes, sony could do it.
Xbox Backward Compatibility is amazing. Resolution and frame rate boosts are impressive. I really hope Sony is trying to get this level of compatibility working with their PS5.
@@jurijkratz4792 Yeah but some aren't and hit 60fps. The great thing about it is that now X360 games that struggled to keep that 30fps, can actually have a constant 30fps experience.
If people had jailbreak access to the xbone, they would be able to patch the memory to enable 60 fps for any 360 game just like other emulators, MS could do this themselves and optimize for certain games if they wanted to, same as they do for some og xbox games, only problem is the performance hit.
@@HaohmaruHL yeah cause there so isn't a market for people wanting to play conker like and reloaded, you sir win the asshole of the internet award. now if you will please take this dunce cap and go sit in the corner so no one gets a taste of your ignorance.
"Emulating is expensive" says Sony. And where does the ps plus profit go?? That money is NOT improving the system as they say, it's going right into Sony's pockets.
@@crowndaniking2149 I prefer to play Halo on a system with tons of options to play and with the most stable online than keep paying for an online service that 50% of the time its down, easy to bring it offline and single player games without replayability...who is the looser?
You forgot the apostrophe on "backwards". PS: None of the words in your comment need any apostrophe. The words you used Props and guys are simply PLURALS, and they never use apostrophe in them. The symbol ' is used to indicate some letters missing (word shortened) like don't means "do not". Or to indicate possession, as in ownership - for example "I ate Bac Jam's donut" (the donut is owned by Bac Jam). PPS: Most people wouldn't know what "props" means. I had to go onto Urban Dictionary, and I guess you mean the 1980's slang term that's short for "proper respect" ?
@@squodge I agree. That's one of the reasons I prefered to buy a better PC instead of the PS4. If it had been backwards compatible, I would have already bought it several years ago (specially when my first PS3 broke). But since Sony didn't want to give us BC, I now mainly play on PC and sometimes I come back to PS3
@Retendo im not sure what your saying? Microsoft is worth *vastly* more than Sony. Sony has a market cap of 69 billion dollars. MS has a market cap of 1.077 *trillion* dollars. They don't even play in the same league.
Microsoft doesn't really make money from backwards compatibility heck if you already own the Xbox 360 game on disc or digital you simply insert the disc or redownload the game into your Xbox One Microsoft is doing backwards compatibility for fan service not profit Xbox is truly for the gamers
Hiphop Is Life ✔️ imo exclusives are exactly that. They prevent a larger audience from being able to access games that may be groundbreaking to the gaming community just because people complained about it and because the company wanted to add value so that you wouldnt buy the competition. It adds only to the anti consumer values that these companies practice.
As long as the next gen Xbox is still Windows-based and running on x86 hardware, backwards compatibility with Xbox One games should be trivial and no different than running a Windows 8 game on Windows 10. The software emulator for 360 and OG Xbox games should also be able to run natively still on the next gen Xbox as well, assuming it's still x86 Windows based of course.
The PS4 is somewhat capable of emulating PS1, PS2 and PSP as we have seen through the classics titles for sale on the PSN. PS3 emulation would be almost impossible on a PS4, but RPCS3 is showing it's not entirely impossible on a more powerful system. There is little reason why Sony won't allow access to their emulation features for customers to play their disc based PS1 and PS2 games and digital PSP games, other than some compatibility issues and the fact Sony can re-sell their 'classics'. I'd personally like to see Sony pull finger with the PS5 and offer emulation support for PS1, PS2 and PSP (as well as some Vita titles), and hardware level support for PS3, plus up-scaling to Full HD. The Hardware required to run PS3 games is cheap enough and wouldn't increase the cost of the system all that much. They could offer a cheap model with PS4/PS5 support and a 'Pro model' with more power that also has backwards compatibility, for those that want it. But seeing how dedicated Sony is to PS NOW, I doubt we will get any of that!
Yes! This was also part of the video but I decided to cut this info since it made the video closer to 20 minutes long. The PS2 emulator can actually be accesses with a bit of custom firmware on lower versioned PS4's but it isn't all that great and leads to a lot of compatibility issues so its very likely Sony doesn't want to be liable for if a consumer has a bad experience when attempting to play something. This is the same reason for why it was removed in 80GB PS3's .That, and Sony would like to sell you the upscaled, trophy enhanced versions on the store. As for PS1, that emulator works quite well on all PS3's and my only guess as to why Sony doesn't offer it on PS4 is the requirement of keeping it compatible on PS4 firmwares. Every new PS4 firmware has to be thoroughly tested with all other features of the system to ensure there's not many bugs and having an emulator may just be something they were done keeping up with. SoC is not exactly cheap though, and I'd imagine SoC for PS3's Cell would not be 'ridiulously cheap'. But I agree with your assessment, as much as I would love to buy some magical 'mega PS5' that could emulate and SoC everything, it's a pipe dream. The company bought Gaikai for a reason.
Yep. Catering for each game in an emulator is a hell of a lot of work. With each revision they'd need to re-test every game in case they break something. As for the price of a cell processor, I merely meant in the grand scale. I'd happily pay an addition $100 for a system that played PS3 games too, I doubt it'd cost them that much in manufacturing and hardware costs for the added functionality. But, alas, tis but a pipe dream.
I definitely think they would do it if it's on they PSN market only. Reason being devs, pubs and Sony themselves will still get a cut of profits. Hard part be physical media as the risk no one getting the money aside from the used third party. So technically if anything places like pawnshops are holding us back
I love the backwards compatibility feature on my Xbox One. I purchased the Xbox One S specifically because of this feature. There were hundreds of games in the last generation that I didn't have a chance to buy or play, and several games from the Xbox original generation that I used to own and got rid of many years ago. I love the fact that I can go back and play some of my favorite games from back in the day. A lot of these games remain console exclusives that never came out on PC, so the Xbox One becomes the best way to play them as many of them have significant enhancements over the original. I spend about half of my time playing Xbox 360 games on my Xbox One. Xbox might not have many good exclusives (Forza Horizon being an amazing exception), but I find myself spending more time on my Xbox largely due to the backwards compatibility feature. As far as I'm aware, there are now over 500 backwards compatible games on Xbox One. Also, PlayStation now just isn't the same as running the games at local hardware. This is why I subscribe to Game Pass instead.
@@Rockymann27 call it what you want point is xbox people can play old ass games updated with 4k and some with 4k HDR support and sony people can't. And as far as every one saying keep your old consoles for some people thats not an option some people don't have a dedicated game room, some people dont live with parents in a room/basement, some people have an actual family and don't wanna clutter up living room with old ass hardware. I love my Ps4 Pro but i have 185 games downloaded on my Xbox X. And yes the majority of them do get played often.
It is entirely possible that no ones buying them, or developers don't want to release them. Why bother to continue a program if developers and/or gamers are uninterested? And I'm not talking about you personally. Don't chime in with "I would buy it". Of course you would, because you're the target audience. But what are the actual sales figures on these games? Are they making money?
Yea, and then the next issue is going to be continuing not to include BC. And they will justify it with the low sales of classic releases. Though remasters seem to do fairly well. And all the more incentive to continue that trend.
Backwards Compatibility is a must I think for PS5, it must play everything the PS4 can right now. I do think it is always in their best interests to try to bring PS3 games working on the PS5 since it will need to be more powerful than the XboxOneX. I don’t see PSNow as a sustainable options for backwards because you need some fancy internet to get that working right and their is noticeable lag compared to if we were just allowed to download the game. PSNow needs to evolve to XboxGame Pass standards basically.
Caligula6 Shoshon most of the games of interest by majority of people have either been third party games on all the systems or HD remasters of the big titles from PS3. God of War follow by the most recent exclusives Spider-Man, Last of Us 2. So yes I would say this generation has been of remasters on the most part. Backwards compatibly on the Xbox is nice but that is probably due to their extreme lack of exclusives making PlayStation Exclusives look like a field day. But replaying old favorites is always good and that’s why Crash and Spyro remakes are gaining popularity. People like the option to replay their old favorites and that is why Blu-ray releases have a dvd disc in them a long with the Blu-ray. Options are better than being gated
Sure, maybe Sony can offer two PS5's... one that costs $300 and has no backwards compatibility, and another that costs $1,000 which has SoC to allow it to play PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games. Would you pay $1,000 for a hardware solution that could play the entire catalogue? PS3 sold at $600 with a hardware chip to play PS2, and look what that did to Sony. The had to remove the chip for people to even consider buying a PS3. Do you think Sony feels like going down that route again? As usual, people say "I want, I want, I want" - but no one wants to pay for it.
Jason Yip yes I would be happy with that option if I had to pay more for a backwards version of the console. But I moved pass Backwards and focusing on a cooler ps5 because PS4 gets way too hot
i've always felt that spencer is "for the gamers" type of guy. he really did allot of good stuff for his company and his fanbase. now there's rumours about ps5 being backwards compatible with all previous consoles hopefully it's true
I own 2 PS3s still I own the one that first came out back in 2006 I mean it's not the day one edition but it's the one that came out in 2006. And then I own the PS3 Slim. If anybody is just worried about playing PS3 games then just keep your PS3. and if you love the PS4 controller or the PS3 controller you can actually use the PS4 controller on the PS3.
your not wrong, they are waiting for the ps5. either that or they will not bother with it, and put ps4 titles into psnow for the ps5. which to me would be a giant middle finger to their customer base.
@@GunsNGames1 i have a huge ps1 and ps2 library, and not including disc based back compat is rather insulting. it pretty much is telling you, we know you bought the games already, but what we want you to do is buy the game all over again.

Want to make the PlayStation 4 backwards compatible with physical PlayStation 3 games and accessories? Send Sony a message, with the following text (it can be modified): "I found a news article titled 'Patent Suggests Backward Compatibility Is Coming To PlayStation 4,' which could be a rumor. If you plan to make it come true, then I kindly ask that you finally provide the PlayStation 4 backwards-compatiblity with physical PlayStation 3 games and accessories by redesigning it so that PS3 and PS4 gamers can finally play them on a single console, something lots of them have been wishing for over the past five years. Hopefully, you can have no objection as this message will try and make you fully realize how much inconvenience you have caused for PS3 gamers since the PS4 first came out. But if that sounds far fetched, then if the PlayStation 5 will have backwards compatibility with disc-based PS4 games, then I will purchase it to play both PS4 and PS5 games on it by the time it comes out and also buy a PlayStation 3 separately. Without backwards-compatibility, there is no way of saving extra space in households and there is no way of playing games from previous platforms in the same series on a newer console. So, please, the next time you make a video game console, consider decisions like this more carefully. When you put backwards compatibility to the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3, you did a great job of allowing your customers to be able to play older games for previous platforms onto newer ones without buying anything else instead of preventing them from playing those onto said sixth and seventh generation consoles. By not making the PS4 backwards compatible with physical PS3 games and accessories, you forced PS3 gamers to seek out alternate pursuits and methods (such as playing PS3 games as digital downloads instead), and believe me, unless you accept this request, it's not likely that people will invest years of time and money in a company and product that will pull the rug out from under them with not so much as a thought to what they do. I'm not trying to threaten your company in any way, I'm just refusing to be hopeless. Thanks!"
Xbox One brutally stomps PS4 when it comes to BC... I don't see a reason to buy Ezio collection on Xbox one when you can just insert That AC2 that you bought years ago... I don't get paid to be a delusional Sony defender. But that's the truth yall
@Jason born i sense some sarcasm, Yes? @King Allant it happens that the xbox owners don't have to deal with this struggle + i didn't have any choice in 2015, i had to sell my old system to afford the PS4
@@CertifiedMVP 1. What struggle? Using your other systems is a struggle now? How lazy can someone gets?? 2. So you are the one who was willingly leaving all those games. You decision not sony's
Blah, Blah, Blah. Its not difficult. Sony just didn't want to do it. PS2 had a Totally different SOC than PS1 and it was still able to run BC. There are PS3 games right now. God of war 3 that are running on an emulator on PC. Sony just found it more profitable to remaster games and sell them to people over again. Just like with the STREAMING.
God of War 3 is barely running at a stable framerate on the emulator, and it was running on pc specs more powerful than a PS4... In the future I'd say PS5 could probably run some PS3 game, but I believe PS6 will definitely run most; if not all PS3 games. For sure its impossible on PS4 on its current hardware. Obviously this is a pipe dream for me for sony to do BC this way but they are already heavily invested with PS Now, which pisses me off because i have a data cap on my internet and i ain't about to waste it on steaming games
@@naruto78961 No I just commented. Smh. Sony can tell you WHATEVER THEY WANT. You going to honestly believe that Microsoft can emulate games from not one but two totally different systems from two generations ago but Sony cant? Cell had little to no impact how games were developed. Sony just didn't want to do BC because they make REMASTERS and they sell them to customers via STREAMING. Remember how much they spent on GAKI? That's what they use to stream games to people. Soooooooooo, why give you BC when they would lose out on that investment. Stop and think without the fanboy glasses.
kahnsealable The cell processor for the PS3 was fucking horrible to develop with. What the hell do you mean it had little to no impact? The PS3 had the worst version of multiplats because it was difficult to work with. MS didn’t have that problem. On top of all that, Sony AND MS even said that BC is hard to do. If MS is having trouble doing BC and their console didn’t even have a cell processor, why the hell would Sony waste all that time putting PS3 games on the console? It’s not as simple as pressing a button. Use your brain. I thought this stuff was common knowledge by now but I guess not.
Lol. MS having a hard time doing it yet they have DONE IT. You can keep trying to justify it all you want buddy but the bottom line is that Sony made the decision NOT to do it. You sitting here believing that they can stream the games to us and thinking they couldnt change the code to run it. Its not that they can't do it. They just decided to NOT do it.
They could have made system on a chip be an option, like a card you plug into an expansion slot. That solves a lot of problems. You are still able to have a low price at launch for the majority of the market that supposedly doesn't care about BC, and you are still able to offer effective easy to engineer disk game BC without the massive effort of emulation.
Oh, so you're saying that certain models of the PlayStation 3 and all versions of newer consoles lacked backwards compatibility with games for certain previous platforms just because the older PS3 models were too expensive and newer consoles would have had the same problem with their purchase costs and Sony thought it wouldn't be possible to make the PlayStation 4 play physical PS3 games? You have to admit, that is really bizarre and lame! For some reason, I thought I read somewhere a few years ago that the newer PS3 models no longer supported backward-compatibility with PS2 games only because Sony thought it was too expensive to add to them, so it seems like I'm mistaken since somehow, that's how I remembered reading whatever it was I found such information. But either way, it would have made more sense and been more convenient to make these consoles and certain versions of the PlayStation 3 backwards-compatible with games for certain previous platforms (although physical PS1 games can still be played on newer PS3 models), in my opinion. Thanks for clearing that up!
Xbox all but confirmed that the new console will be backwards compatibles with the new console. Phil Spenser said he thinks it’s awful you lose all your games when you move to a new console. He wants all your games to carry with you onto a new console. That plus with the Xbox X still relatively new when the next gen console comes out it only makes sense to make everything compatible
PC: Have an RPCS3 emulator, a decent ammount of games run smoothly. PS4: Nuh bro, its impossible to emulate plus noones wants (kappa), so we will just make remasters and only on best selling games.
@@NoCommentaryLife the ps3's processor is extremely complex, the cell processor which is why the ps3 was so hard to make games for, and so it would take huge amounts of resources to replicate the processor, making the emulator hard to make and intensive

Wait so I was abt to buy persona 3 fes digital on persona 3, so does that mean I won’t be able to play it on ps5 ? Unless there’s backwards compatibility..like will it forever be lost and a waste of money?
Problem is how can we have these old consoles making nice crisp texture and better resolution etc through a PS1 or PS2 only have scart, and the 3 cable (red, yellow, white) oppotunities.?? Is it possible through a HDMI converter
This is an easy one. MS are happy for their gamers to use thier old games where as Sony want thier gamers to spend more money be that with remasters or on PlayStation Now
Or let's just be totally honest here, the PS4 can be backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 games but Sony would rather sell them to us so they've locked it off.
@@KakarotOwns So it isn't "locked off" then. It is just Sony doesn't want to put the time and effort into it. Which is understandable if Microsoft has been working on it since 2007. I'm no Sony engineer so I'm never going to claim what is or isn't possible in terms of backwards compatibility but what if they are working on it with the PS5? I also once heard someone say PS1 backwards compatibility would be entirely impossible on the PS4 but I don't know how true that is either. We will just have to wait and see what becomes of the rumor that PS Now games may be downloadable in the future. That could get the ball rolling for the feature.
Well it's locked off in the sense that we can't play our own PS2 games on the system, we have to buy the ones available on the store only. Would love it for PS5, hope they do something like that.
@@KakarotOwns Okay I gotcha now. Some people seem to think that it is as easy as flipping a switch when they say it is locked off. I understand what you mean now. I hope they do it eventually too. We will just have to wait and see. I'm more hopeful though since Sony got a backwards compatibility patent not too long ago and that PS Now download rumor that has been going around.
*Video Simplified:* Sony don't know how to achieve backwards compatiblity.. for PS1, PS2, PS3 on PS4.. Now PS5 only allows certain PS4 games. 😳 Sony trashing their own Legacy & forgetting what their Customers want. ✅ Xbox doing what their Customers want! I still have my PS3 as well as my PS2 so doesn't bother me. However the fact that I can play all of my 360 games on my ONE allowed me to box my old 360 up and save space.
If there is a partially working ps3 emulator via PC, it means PS3 emulation is more than possible on the upcoming PS5. Since I have digitally purchased loads of games on ps3, Sony better make this cross platform for the new PS5 instead of forcing us to re-buy enhanced versions all the time. Digital purchases should always be available like steam on PC. If not, I will not waste an extra penny on Sony, and my last Sony console will be my PS4 Pro. Most of my digital 360 library works very well on Xbox One X... some of which have been enhanced for free...bravo Microsoft for a perk that rewards customers of your brand...both Nintendo and Sony should take notes.
You can't actually think Sony can build an AFFORDABLE box BASED ON X86 hardware that can emulate the very different cell processor. Yes, A SUPER EXPENSIVE PC can emulate SOME PS3 games, doesn't mean an affordable box will be able to emulate ALL PS3 games. Huge difference.
I've seen PS2 emulators run fine on decade-old hardware like a Q6600 with 4GB of RAM on Windows Vista. I'm pretty sure the PS4 could handle emulating a PS2. The Jaguar core in the PS4 shouldn't be much weaker.
So... is it sure that we will be able to play PS4 games on PS5? If i buy a PS5 i'll probably trade in 4, if it's backwards compatible. I don't want a PS5 if it means not being able to play all the good PS4 games.
So can you explain to me why streaming a PS3 game like RDR on PS4 through the psNow subscription is possible but. Just allowing us to play the game or releasing it in the ps store is hard to do? Paying another subscription on top of my ps plus subscription is bs
PS1 Backwards Compatibility still could have been a thing on PS4, considering that the PS3 was able to emulate the full library easily hell even the PSP and Vita were capable of it.
@@damiank9443no I haven't. I don't know if sony allows cd playback on the ps4 yet but 1) bluray drives play CD and 2) sony themselves said they would be sending a software update years ago to allow cd playback after backlash it wasn't included.

Backwards compatibility is half the reason I play games on PC whenever possible. The ability to go back and play most any game from the past is great... I wish more modern consoles would keep this feature. Imagine how cool it would be if PS4 played all games that came out for PS1/PS2/PS3/PS4... It would be an incredible gaming machine! I can dream.
See for us console folks you basically gotta buy an older system to play the games especially for PlayStation. I’ve been a ps person for years and I did skip the ps3 for the 360. Now idk what to do
The PS4 has the ability to incorporate PS3 backwards compatibility. I just got call of duty ghosts for PS3 Christmas 2018. It had a code for a reduced price digital version of the PS4 version ($10) the only thing was that you had to put your PS3 disk into the PS4 (I don't have a PS4 so I didn't try it)
The thing is once they get a working emulator they could put it into each new generation with little updating needed. So that work would down across generations of consoles and that means profits.
first off yes the pc has backwards compatibility, but let me tell you, if you need third party software to run games, then it's really not backwards compatible. qa stupid amount of say windows 95 games, out right refuse to work on current hardware and software, so you either need to make a dual boot. or rely on sketchy third party software to run it. want a perfect example, i bought bejeweled twist on the pc about 2 years ago, guess what happened the game ran like crap because their was a conflict with the 3d acceleration on newer graphics cards. is there a fix sure if you look super super deep, and i kinda shouldn't have to. i get what you are saying, but you are grossly over simplifying it.
@ateb3 you are correct obviously, but i am simply saying, it is not as simple as putting a disk in and it working. sometimes it is very involved and can get complicated. not very user friendly.
I don't play that much games neither do I buy them and since backwards compatibility was a thing it was the main reason why I bought it. (I also bought it because its linked to my microsoft account)
This is why the CECHA01/CECHE01 PS3 is probably the greatest playstation made (aside from heating issues). in the words of Jiggaman Jay-Z "If you don't like my new shit, buy my old albums"
thanks this does a great job of explaining why. because of the lack of amazing games on x1 im so happy that I can play most of my xbox 360 games on it especially since there are a lot of great xbox 360 games !
it worked so much for playstation two,i don't know why it was taken put but oh well what can you do? oh i know how about make a outside device that does just attach it to the playstation four and as long as it updates and when it's done updating it will have backwards compatibility for original playstation games, ps 2 games and ps3 games,it doesn't require playstation network to work, just attach it to the playstation and let it do the thing and play your old games, sound like a good idea to me.
Respect to Microsoft, they literally revolutionized the gaming industry while Sony just sits there making one or two exclusive every five years and then just rip off Xbox,s features
DARELL you’re right man, as a matter of fact that’s the first thing I have too do when I turn on my computer. First I have to install Herpe remover 2020, then I have too download bug off pro edition. And after that I have too write an email to prince Albertoni and ask him too please stop hacking my computer just so I can play rollercoaster fucking tycoon at 5 frames per second on my crazy expensive $3000 computer. Ya come to think of it, PCs suck. I think ima buy a console. Thanks man.
I've heard that you technically dont play your Xbox 360 games from the disc on Xbox one but have to download the game or emulation rom for each game and the disc is more like an anti pirate meassure or vertification. Is it possible to play the games offline after the files needed are downloaded like playing them on an actual xbox 360 or is internet connection needed? I havent bothered with the new consoles because of lack of exclusive titles, I dont care for messing arround online on a console and dealing with DLC's and patching, I got a PC for that. And besides PC games have gotten way more optimized this generation from my experience than the last 2 when almost every game was made with console in mind and PC was an aftherthought. But it would be nice to be able to play my 360 games on an xbox one if or when my 360 stops working.
XBOX is not using emulator to achieve backwards compatibility. This is the feature of DirectX to run old DirectX code without any problem. DirectX 12 can easly run DirectX 8 and so on. That means that XBOX using true force and the full power when running older code, and ofc it's not emulated code.
You've covered all the important talking points about backwards compatibility. Let me just add that the reason that they sold a lot of PS4s since launch and now nearing 90 million is because IT IS NOT BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE. Their focus was to sell the new hardware with the latest games. It's hard to believe I know but just look at the Nintendo Switch - not physically possible to do bc and it did not launch with the old virtual console. It closed the possibility of using your owned old digital library to their latest Switch (supposedly the best example of bc) However the Switch might surpass the Xbox One's lifetime sales at the end of this year (or the next year) I believe that both Sony and Nintendo are keeping bc as an ace in the hole. The PS4 might have bc at the end of it's cycle and Nintendo might (very low possibility) activate VC for a possible Switch Pro version.
2d games is easier to emulate, it's a plus for Nintendo, but for Sony it's would be a nightmare. Because it's harder to emulate 3d games. If u research even sega saturn emulator need 4ghz cpu to be almost 100% accurate. The recent 3d sonic game on ps3 need like overclock 5Ghz cpu to run at full speed. But the dolphin emulator proved the IBM cpu on gamecube is quite familiar with today's x86 tech so it's possible on switch.
Jin Kazama That is entirely due to the shitstorm of 2013 if we want to be honest PS4 was pretty barren in 2013-14 and felt cheap and tacky yet still sold well MS shot themselves in the foot big time and have spent years fixing things instead of focusing on games.
@@sean70729 dude....this next gen will be the same. Xbox wins the first 2 years and Sony pulls ahead and leaves em behind year 3 or 4. Thats because the majority of PS users do not upgrade to a new console until the price drops. For real man...i remember going to best buy on last gen launch and bought a 360. That was a no brainer. Easily a 5 to 1 ratio of Xbox360 to PS3 walking out the door. This time I went and bought a PS4 on launch. Still the same lopsided number walking out with Xbox one's. Yet Sony is looking to finish this gen with 1 to 3 ratio of sales vs xbox.
It was a serious mistake on the part of Sony to choose to not have backwards compatability. Thankfully Im a multiplatform gamer and a fan of Nintendo and the PC not just the Platstation so when the Playstation dies because of dumb decisions like no backwards compatability and no crossplay I will have other game platforms to fall back on. A big key to a game playform being gamer friendly is being able to play old and new games on it.
@@JoshuaBananas that are coming to pc... Yeah right... Dont get me wrong i like the xbox brand more than sony but in this generation they are shitty. Since the newest insider update you can test a specific native xbox game on Win10 and it works... Thats to the exclusive games. Basicly, to make a car metaphor they take the engine, remove it completely, and completely build a new one. Same car on outside but on the inside, completely different
I heard that a few more impediments was music copyrights and permission as well as some games developers no longer exist and knowing who has rights was a problem. These are other problems with emulation. Hardware backwards compatibility gets around this.
@@Free-JackWolff Nah nigga you're like I said. The PS3 cell processor is damn near impossible to emulate on the PS4 because it's not powerful enough which is the reason there is no PS3 backwards compatible learn about tech before you say dumbshit. @@trunks6179 They say that but they could be lying. How are they able to play PS3 games through PlayStation now? Doesn't that use emulation? Or are they using the power of the cloud? You call me dumb but then you just believe everything Sony says!
I hope the next Xbox can play all previous generation Xbox games. And I hope it has a large enough hard drive to install my 151 XB360 games, 81 XB games, and my over 60 XB1 games, plus at least enough room left for the new system's games, like about 40 to 50 of them.
No, I haven't (thankfully!). Too bad Sony discontinued physical PlayStation 2 backwards-compatibility on newer PlayStation 3 models just because it originally made the older models very expensive. At some point in the future, though, I might purchase that same exact PS3 model to play PS3 games on there since the PlayStation 3 was/is somewhat popular like the PlayStation 2 (which is all I have in the PlayStation series since it's an all-time favorite of mine).
@@CEO100able it was great because when i went and played a game like yugioh forbidden memories i could make as meny memory cards as i wanted to duplicate cards.
@@anthonyross5769 Does that mean you can make digital PlayStation 1 and 2 memory cards without using physical ones? If so, that's interesting, even though I think that's what I forgot about the PlayStation 3.
@@anthonyross5769 Interesting, I suppose. Thanks! But if a PlayStation 3 gamer also has a PlayStation 1 and/or a PlayStation 2, and if he or she wants to play the same games as the one played on both consoles again on their PlayStation 3, it would be better to use a physical PlayStation 1 and 2 memory card adapter for it to easily find and access their game save files. Therefore, if I ever get a PlayStation 3 (as long as it supports PlayStation 2 games on their original discs), I'll need to do the same procedure since I have a bunch of files saved onto my PlayStation 1 and 2 memory cards since I've been playing PS1 and PS2 games on my North American NTSC SCPH-30001 PlayStation 2 console for nearly five years.
You sort of mentioned it at the end of the video, but there's a 3rd option for backward compatibility, when multiple console generations share the same platform, this being x86. My understanding is that with ps4/5 and the xboxes, because they are all x86, it's not emulation or SoC, they essentially the same underlying technology. This is why you can install a 15 year old game on your modern pc, because that old game had like directx 7 or whatever, for which the code is still rattling around with the newer direct x versions.
Hi everyone! Hope you enjoyed the video, one topic I'm seeing in the comments a lot is, what about emulation for PS2 and PS1 Backwards Compatibility? Now while there isn't a concrete answer for this we can only go based off conjecture but here's my 2 cents:
It's likely a few things that add up to the reason why Sony doesn't do either and I think the main one is liability.

#1 reason for PlayStation to not be backwards compatible is that they'd rather sell you a game you already own instead of just reading a disc that makes you download the game immediately and for free. PS2 classics in a nutshell.

I am pretty sure more time and cost went into making the Xbox One play 360 games.
those games are remastered and its developers that want it to have a price

As long as the next gen Xbox is still Windows-based and running on x86 hardware, backwards compatibility with Xbox One games should be trivial and no different than running a Windows 8 game on Windows 10.
Ben Rogue I feel like that’s a bit too much that your asking for there bud without breaking the bank
Well, I suppose a lot would be in order haha. I actually do have an extra PS4 sitting on Firmware 2.5 I could perhaps mess around with..
I definitely think they would do it if it's on they PSN market only. Reason being devs, pubs and Sony themselves will still get a cut of profits.
Hard part be physical media as the risk no one getting the money aside from the used third party.
So technically if anything places like pawnshops are holding us back
Im pretty sure Sony could make backwards compatibility possible on their console they are just too lazy and money hungry to actually do it
Ya know with all the technology Sony has at their disposal you’d think they could have a DECENT streaming service
And I'm not talking about you personally. Don't chime in with "I would buy it". Of course you would, because you're the target audience. But what are the actual sales figures on these games? Are they making money?
@@koloth5139 it's a shame, but yeah i think they are not selling well
Yea, and then the next issue is going to be continuing not to include BC.
Caligula6 Shoshon so than they can’t resell me the game on ps5 like half the games we can buy on PS4 that are actually interesting.
Xbox has a backwards compatible list. They aren't going to do every game. Why should the ps5 make every game backwards compatible?

Want to make the PlayStation 4 backwards compatible with physical PlayStation 3 games and accessories? Send Sony a message, with the following text (it can be modified):
"I found a news article titled 'Patent Suggests Backward Compatibility Is Coming To PlayStation 4,' which could be a rumor. Thanks!"

Or maybe Sony only care the money instead of their consumers.

Pure fantasy. The Cell isn't some giant emulation hurdle like you all want to make it out to be.

I love my PS4 but Xbox kills it when it comes to the consumer
You've covered all the important talking points about backwards compatibility.
Let me just add that the reason that they sold a lot of PS4s since launch and now nearing 90 million is because IT IS NOT BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE.
Their focus was to sell the new hardware with the latest games.
It's hard to believe I know but just look at the Nintendo Switch - not physically possible to do bc and it did not launch with the old virtual console.
It closed the possibility of using your owned old digital library to their latest Switch (supposedly the best example of bc)
However the Switch might surpass the Xbox One's lifetime sales at the end of this year (or the next year)
I believe that both Sony and Nintendo are keeping bc as an ace in the hole.
Dude.. BC is gonna be Sony's ace for the next consoles.

@@neomaxmlc No one gives a fuck on exclusives!
@@neomaxmlc Just single player campaign games you play once. that's legit every ps4 exclusive stop overwanking that shit.
8:08 what about the games u download from the ps store that are ps3 games but can also run on a ps4?
Basicly, to make a car metaphor they take the engine, remove it completely, and completely build a new one. Same car on outside but on the inside, completely different
I heard that a few more impediments was music copyrights and permission as well as some games developers no longer exist and knowing who has rights was a problem. These are other problems with emulation. Hardware backwards compatibility gets around this.
Just put the ps3 chip in the ps5 and I’ll buy it idgaf if it’s $800
It would deter scalpers by a lot.
Playstation is greedy and wants to push Playstation now!
You're a dumbass LMAO
@@trunks6179 Not really LMAO!
@@Free-JackWolff Nah nigga you're like I said. The PS3 cell processor is damn near impossible to emulate on the PS4 because it's not powerful enough which is the reason there is no PS3 backwards compatible learn about tech before you say dumbshit. The PS5 is getting Ryzen CPU & there's been a patient filed for BC from PS1-PS4 for PS5 you can literally Google the shit
@@trunks6179 nigga is the PS1 AND 2 PROCESSORS too complicated to run on PS4? NO! nobody said shit about ps3.
@@trunks6179 They say that but they could be lying. How are they able to play PS3 games through PlayStation now? Doesn't that use emulation? Or are they using the power of the cloud? But this other guy has a point why are the PlayStation 2 games not backwards compatible I bought some PlayStation 2 games on PS3. Why can't I play those on PS4? You call me dumb but then you just believe everything Sony says!
I want to buy Xbox just to play Red Dead Redemption. And as a PC Master race gamer I'm red dead serious.
Wow I love this channel it’s so informative keep it up
Hi. Is backwards compatible that important for the PS3 if you don't have a PS2?
Because Sony wants all your money
Because sony wants to make money off of the tons of remakes that they do.....be for real...sony said gamers dont want to play old games....

God, I like the PS4 a lot, but I fucking hate Sony as a company, they suck so much.

I hope the next Xbox can play all previous generation Xbox games. And I hope it has a large enough hard drive to install my 151 XB360 games, 81 XB games, and my over 60 XB1 games, plus at least enough room left for the new system's games, like about 40 to 50 of them.
Has everyone forgot about the ps3 fat model? The OG ps3. 80gb of space ps3. I still have mine and it plays ps1 ps2 and ps3 games.
@@CEO100able yup thats exactly what it means. That is if you care about that kind of thing.
