Xbox’s Backwards compatibility is a true selling point for me as a gamer. I love being able to bring my classic games moving forward with me to the next generation, and not only that but essentially will have 4 generations of games on 1 platform running with major upgrades. Incredible.
Oscar Betts I can play Xbox original, 360, One & Series X games on 1 console. That’s 4 generations my guy lol idc there’s only 40 OG Xbox games they have incredible ones like Knights of the old republic & Battlefront Original.
@@oscarbetts6485 also it's not just those games disc's will work if you still have them. That's the one thing he got wrong in this video. Games even if they don't retain a license if you own the disc you will be able to play it. That's how it is for a couple of games on the Xbox one.
@@oscarbetts6485 yeah but i'd bet since they have a stable emulatory they could add more, the reason a lot of them aren't added to back compat is because of licensing issues which are usually only for the lifetime of the console and dead Ip's no one knows who own. MS could def emulate more and I'm sure they will add more.

The list is great so far but Microsoft has even said that they will try to expand backwards compatibility to add more titles this next generation on top of all the ones they’ve already added. Regardless I’m super happy to have this feature. I use it all the time on my Xbox One. Just funny how PlayStation fanboys act like not having the feature is somehow more beneficial..

At the time, Sony thought Cell-based systems would be the future. They had dreams of licensing the technology out to make supercomputers (maybe consumer PCs too) That's why they spent hundreds of millions developing it. In their mind at the time, I'm sure they thought every future PS would use Cell architecture.
@@unicorntomboy9736 Agreed. Mark Cerny knew what he was doing when he designed it. Apparently Sony knew PS3 was hard to develop for, but just arrogantly expected developers to deal with it. Then Cerny came in with the 'revolutionary' idea that if you design a console that is easy to work with, more developers would want to work with it. Thankfully Cerny is still around to make PS5 and onward.

If legacy really mattered people would just keep their original hardware. No one says a word about Nintendo not supporting backwards compatibility. Does the Switch play Wii U, Wii, Gamecube, N64, Super Nintendo, or NES games? No it doesn't support ANY of those systems. Sure you can buy some of their legacy games on the virtual console, but you have to pay for them. It doesn't matter, people buy new consoles to play new games. Backwards compatibility is a convenience feature, it is a luxury. People need to get over it and be happy to get some backwards compatibility and stop complaining about what they didn't get. Particularly when many people never actually even use the feature. I kept my 60gb PS3 because it could play all my PS1, PS2 and PS3 games. I haven't touched it in years. I still have my NES and my Super NES I rarely use them. And I bought a Retron 5, I do play that slightly more than my other retro consoles. But mostly I play new games. If you mostly play old games there are solutions, namely use the original hardware. It will always run the games 100% of the time.

I really don't care about backwards compatibility, and think no one should. Why buy a ps5 to play other ps game? In my opinion, it's a novelty feature you will forget about in the first year.
I would love to play my Rule of Rose PS2 game on the PS5. The chances of this game being remastered is almost non-existent. I'm leaning towards never due to the content the game has.
PlayStation has been my preferred platform since I first became a gamer in the '90s, but there's no question that XBOX is kicking Sony's ass in this area.

I got the hunch that Xbox Series X is going to be the better system. Xbox Series X's backwards compatiblity alone means WAYY more games that I haven't played yet. They are sure offering A LOT of great stuff for the next Xbox and I think that next generation is going to be Xbox's generation. I will get the Xbox first.
I'm no Sony fanboy as I have an Xbox one, but damn just because it has better stats on paper doesn't mean it's gonna play out well. If you really wanted to play older classic games you could spend less than $100 and get an Xbox or playstation that can play all the old games you want. People buy new consoles BECAUSE people want new games and features. It's as simple as that and when you factor in the the ps5 will have better and more exclusives, a superior ssd (which can make or break a system trust me) and an already supportive fanbase. Excellent video, I feel that Microsoft worked so hard on BC for more than just consoles, working on a PowerPC to x86-64 converter I would imagine is very useful in the server world. (CPU code is converted, GPU code is emulated, digital foundry did a great video on it), Plus it helped Xbox game pass in the early days.
Its never a good idea to buy a system at launch. (Systems at launch are always faulty, far too overpriced and have no games until about two years after console launch.) With that being said, the Xbox Series X looks far appealing than the PS5 which looks like a white binder. I also like the total backwards compatible features of the Series X as opposed to the PS5 which only has limited PS4 backwards compatibility and nothing for the PS1, PS2, or PS3 at all.
Just fyi, the “3D sound engine” is based on the ps3 architecture, and is as powerful on its own as a PS4. -mark cerny said. I Can see how this hardware in the ps5 could support ps3 data, and/or along with some if needed emulation on the ps5 end. I hope this is the case.
The tempest engine on relates to sound sources and is not designed to be used in any other way. Especially not for a ps3 ps2 or ps1 emulator. Let it go
The Tempest engine is designed _in the style of_ a PS3 SPE core, with DMA and no caching, which was found to be an almost ideal design for real time sound processing. It's not, however, an _actual_ PS3 SPE architecture. It's actually one heavily modified RDNA2 Compute Unit, made by AMD. Developers _can_ use it for general purpose processing unrelated to sound, but it doesn't seem any better for emulating a PS3 than any other part of the PS5.
the portion of the cell that needs emulation are the SPEs...since the modified rdna2 core is modelled after the spes and cerny states it can take up to 20% bandwidth (more data throughput than the whole ps3) and is as strong as all 8 jaguar cores in the ps4, it may be able to aid in emulation of the ps3...the rsx would be emulated with the gpu (duh lol) and the ppe would just be run by the cpu giving the tempest engine instructions. this single core has access to more bandwidth than the ps3 and rdna2 is on 7nm which is very transistor dense. for people to simply say it won't be able to help ps3 emulation is quite reductive. with all that said, gotta be careful assuming sony will put the effort on bc since it seems to have let bc fall by the wayside in recent times. i will say that mark cerny does indeed say AMD handled bc "masterfully." the remapping of the ps5 while working in ps3 bc mode could be as simple as reorganizing the hardware in system verilog based on the similarites discussed in the road to ps5 talk.
It would seem you have something wrong with your logic on the "why" for there being limited Xbox originals vs Sony not having ps1 emulator support. You claim that it is becomes Microsoft is monetizing their efforts vs Sony not being able to because people will pop in their discs. However, if you have the disc for the supported Xbox original game, you can pop that into an Xbox One just fine. So it would sound like both Sony and Microsoft would be capable of the exact same levels on monetization here. Also there are two large issues on the limitations of which Xbox Original games are emulated. The first and most important, which is why everyone knows it, is just the simple licensing issues. For a lot of these, even the original publisher no longer retains the rights to the game. However another big issue less talked about is that the Xbox Original had analog face buttons. The harder you pushed the X button, for example, it might have did something different in game. Any game that used this, games like Shenmue 2 or Xtreme Beach Volleyball, cannot be emulated with current digital controllers.
7:30 Well... Do keep in mind that RPCSX3 is the work of just the one guy. Who was no access to any of the documentation and has to reverse engineer the entire thing. So imagine a team of a few people at Sony dedicated to it, with access to all of Sony's documentation on PS3 hardware. It should absolutely be achievable to have some games run properly. I think it's more of a cost thing than anything else.
I'm mostly hoping for PS2 support. Also to add, the PS5 took the PS3 audio engine and improved on it since it was superior to the audio engine on the PS4. So some groundwork is there for PS3 play.
But why? They put their resources in brand new games. That's where Sony's money and effort goes and rightfully so. I won't buy a PS5 to play a PS2 game. It's extra but not needed.

I don't see why people would want to play ps2 games on a ps5. I personally want the new hardware to take advantage of the most cutting edge graphics and performance. I couldn't care less about playing Timesplitters on PS5.........

was just doing clean up in my house and found I still have 2 PS2 and a PS1, and a PSP. I still got my Vita, vita TV, x360 a PS3 super slim and my best friend PS3 super slim alongside my PS4 pro. My brother has the retro consoles If you really care about old games I'm sure you'll make the effort to keep them. Next-gen is mostly for moving forward, backwards compatibility if a bonus.

Anyone thats confused on the PS5 backward compatibility with PS4 should know when you purchase a PS5 make sure to backup all your data from the PS4, then log in to your PSN on the PS5 and retrieve your backup data. Doing this will allow you to access all of your PS4 library games and play them on the PS5.

I was always thinking of having a psn account and the games you purchased would be linked to that account, that means that you could access them from any console. But then again, PS won’t get much profit from it and it would be very susceptible to hackers.
It worked that way for digital PS1 games on PS3, PSP and PS Vita. I still don't understand why Sony didn't make have an ps1 emulator on PS4 and just sell the hundreds of ps1 games they are still selling on PS3/Vita on PS4.

I love this video for how it went into much detail and it was easy to understand. For me personally, it does not really matter if the PS5 doesnt get native backwards compatibility with PS1-PS3 games. It also doesn't make much sense because it would end up being costly, difficult, and in the end not worth it.
Great video man - but I would challenge you on a few things: 1) I think you made a bit of a false equivalency on the PS5 to PS4 backwards comparability to the XsX to X1. Every X1 game will work on the XsX day one, whereas a maximum of 100 PS4 games will work on the PS5. I think you interpreted the fact that both are theoretically possible with what Sony has committed to in practice. 2) You said both Xbox and PS have the same “smart delivery” feature, but only MS have branded it, but then went on to describe that Sony may not do this for hard disc games. I think that’s a bit self refuting because that’s exactly what Xbox will do, so they are not offering the same service... Otherwise great video man! I find your content to be well balanced and doesn’t dive into the silly console wars stuff, despite have your own personal preferences. :)
I still feel uneasy about this. Right now my current ps4 is on its last legs and I'd like to replace it. I own most of the ps4 hits on digital. They should work on ps5 but I don't know.
@@DominiqueDeMann Optical drive doesn't work. Its super loud even after taking it apart, cleaning it and applying new paste, and it locks up randomly. More likely after an hour or so of play.
I'm not overly concerned about Sony's limited backwards compatibility features because I still have my legacy consoles to play my older games with. I think backwards compatibility is more of a niche feature and will never be utilized extensively by the majority of consumers, not to mention the fact that implementing it is not cost effective and will make the PS5 more expensive for reasons mentioned in this video. Sony investing for the future is the right call. Great content by the way. Really love your mini documentaries about Sony's older machines.
Dont understand why backwards compatibility is seen as a bad thing? "Who wants to play old games" No reason you shouldn't be able to play your library and they'll look the best they ever have
Finally an unbiased look on how BC works in these systems. A lot of people don’t get the licensing aspect of BC, which is the biggest reason behind it. Rule of thumb is if there is not a way to make money off of it, don’t count on it in this industry. However, you did fail to mention when it comes to Forwards Compatability, most, of not all will not offer this option permanently. For instance Madden 21 will offer a free upgrade on PS5 from PS4 and Smart Delivery on Xbox need to be redeemed by a certain date. This actually sucks. So essentially you could buy Madden 21 for Xbox One or PS4, get a next gen system in let’s say 2022, but because the publisher no longer supports the timeframe you had to redeem smart delivery or your PS5 upgraded version, you will still be playing the last gen version on a next gen system. So there’s that. I wish you would have touched a little bit in that too, but otherwise great video.
Maybe I am too old to understand the mindset of the young people these day. Why didn't all the people just kept their old gaming machines. If these guys were really into old games they would have kept their old hardware. It seems that these just people just want to play this old games because it is cool to demand BC. They do not seem to have any touch with the reality of retro gaming. PS2 games especially had a very bad image quality. Playing these old games on a 4k TV can be a blurry mess. Same goes or PS1 games. I use original hardware for my ps1 games and a Framemeister and I like the image. But these young and cool tech hipsters would run away if they see their old games upscaled in 4k. These gamers very never meant to be shown in such high resolutions. You will see things you have never seen before. I know Jim Ryan is hated for his statement that he questioned why anybody would like the play the old Grand Torismo Games. But he is right. Old Games on the PS5 will freak out many games that have not played them in ages . They will play for a a few minutes and will go back to modern games. It is not worth for Sony to invest tons of money into a service that actually nobody is used. PS4 BC to keep the most recent gaming past alive is more than sufficient.
Some people’s consoles have stopped working or they don’t have space for an alternate setup with a TV that’ll look better with those games. With the enhancements that come with emulation, the games will look a little more passable.
I'm gonna try to answer your comment. I still have my old PS2. But given the dumb 10 year old I was back then, I dropped it several times, and it's generally not in a very good condition anymore. These machines and especially their lasers and the plastic used to build them don't get any better by the times. That's why I bought a used one about a year ago. That one works fine, but it was made for CRT TVs - which we used to happily replace with an LCD some years ago. That's why I got a used Sony CRT along with my replacement PS2, as well as a high quality scart cable. That setup is beautiful and exactly as those consoles were meant to be used. But I still have to get that 60 kilo son-of-a-CRT out of it's dusty corner every time I want to use my PS2, because apart from some retro game sessions with friends, that thing doesn't serve any purpose but attracting dust. I've actually played through the old GTA's, Need for Speed and Lego Star Wars on my PS2 some time ago, so I spent more than five minutes with it. And even though these games can be a pain in the ass compared to new titles, I still had a good time. Why do I want backwards compatibility? To not have to stress my 20 year old console any more, and because it would ease up the setup so much to just be able to play PS2 games on an HDMI console. I also bought a fat PS3, because it combines the two worlds, lets me enjoy old games on a new screen and shows how good they could be looking when not squeezed through an analog cable. Still, I have to fear about that fat thing YLOD'ing on me one day. I know there's things like the Framemeister, but I don't want to spend several 100 bucks on yet another device, when Xbox users get the same feature built-in. As for the financial part in developing backwards compatibility, I totally get that Sony isn't making any profit off it. And although it hurts, I can't blame them for probably not investing that much in bc. I just would like to see it happen, for emotional reasons. I admit that.
One thing that smart delivery does is check and download the upgrade for you. We don't know for PS5 if you'll have go to the PSN store and find the title yourself and redeem the upgrade.
For a console channel you are far more informed than most. As someone in IT and a PC gamer first, I own consoles but find the space to be lacking in both options and consumer knowledge. Thank you for your efforts.

I'm a PlayStation fan and its my console of choice. I have all of their consoles in fact, but I think that Xbox is starting to get ahead of them when it comes to the backwards compatibility game. Which truly saddens me to see. PlayStation needs to step it up and get more of these PS 1, 2, 3 and 4 games running on the PS5 without having to pay an additional fee or anything. Psnow is not the solution. Like at all. So PS4 has literally NOTHING when it comes to backwards compatibility. Psnow is just netflix i dont wanna pay for games ive already bought. I want to put in my old discs and have them play. Also for digital games to transfer over. And as far as Series X being more powerful than PS5, the og Xbox was more powerful than PS2 and look how that tuned out.
Xbox is not "starting". They have a full BC theam since 2017 working in full BC. That is why they are so ahead than PS And PS4 og is more powerfull than Xbox one OG and look how it end up.

Great video as per usual! Personally, I have never been bothered by backwards compatibility, as I always buy a new console to play new games, not to play previous generation games.
I think a in-between approach would be quite nice, allowing people to use their discs while also licensing the titles they can for digital release (said digital release could include trophies and other enhancements like native widescreen support etc.) while the disc version is just the game running under emulation with no apparent enhancements, while they still curate the support for disc titles to a certain extent, like not allowing titles they haven't tested or at least giving a warning before launching the title for example. That's what I'd want at least, I think there's definitely a middle ground that's better than the approach either company has gone with.

Yeah you forgot to mention that rpcsr3 is being build by a couple of normal gamers at home with no degree. Playstation could easily make a ps3 emulator, as you said, there playstation now service would be useless. I dont want a monthly subscription plan, lemme pay once and then stream it.

One of the selling points, possibly the only selling point, of building a digital library is the ability to move it forward with you. If I have to keep the old hardware to play the game I bought digitally, then what's the point? I can still play PC games I bought 20 years ago on my newest PC. If consoles want to move into a digital direction (which, let's face it, they absolutely do), backwards compatability is a must. Additionally, legacy preservation is important. PS2s are getting older and that hardware won't survive indefinitely.
@@throwsnbrews9516 I don't think pre PS3 era games (basically anything released before 2013) will carry over to the PS5, so only PS4 games I think. PS3 especially is very difficult to emulate without the original hardware & software. Also those PC games you mentioned are probably older than I am.
Not only does xbox have better backwards compatibility and supports every generation, but you also get higher resolutions and higher framerates on a lot of games from earlier generations. Then you also can install retroarch and play ps1, ps2, psp, GameCube, Nintendo 64, super Nintendo, sega saturn, dreamcast, and sega genesis games. You can actually play games at 4k 60fps with retroarch as well. Basically xbox has better sony back compat than sony has for themselves lol. Then you have smart delivery to make things way easier than what sony is doing. Plus xbox doesn't charge you for those upgrades. On top of all those things you have gp ultimate . With the studios Microsoft aquired I'm even more excited for their exclusives over sony's as well
In terms of disc support I have thought that the PS5 would not support PS1 and PS2 because back in those days you needed a memory card to save your games, in the current game consoles you don't need a memory card, your games are saved on Hard Drive. So I can see that it would be very expensive for Sony to make PS1 and PS2 discs to run on PS5.
One thing I noticed about the ps3 after they added ps2 classics to be available to buy digital from the psn store any ps2 game seems to give the message “ this game is not playable in this format” . I kind of think it means that the recent ps3 system updates have added ps2 backwards compatibility to all ps3 , but not allow ps3 systems to actually ps2 games. I could be wrong but likely if then system was modded to allow ps2 disc to be played likely any ps3 could in theory play ps2 discs .
The chart at 6:58 is sized and shaped like it is for a reason. Sony has already mentioned that they're using a heavily customized 8 core CPU... Add the proper SOC to each core and you can mimic the 8 core cell processor and run a legacy PS3 mode (non-emulation)...
If you keep your expectation high you will eventually be disappointed, keeping it low you will be pleasantly suprised. I personally do not care about old gen-games, so why are people whinning about a feature (BC) that they are not willing to pay for and will rarely used lol Modern games are much better than older ones, and we live in an age where ther is streaming and remaster of oder games. I will not like the PS5 to cost $100 more just because the included the PS3-SoC with PS2-software Emulation which i do not care.
Emulating/running Cel Broadband SPU code on x86 cores and GPU compute units is more complex than that. The theoretical best that could be hoped for would be a card containing the equivalent to a Cel Broadband processor and APU, requiring its own I/O, power and cooling solution. While not impossible, it would be a very expensive add-on.
Ulrich Leukam nah, it’s subjectiv but I think that new modern games aren’t better then older ones. The graphics looks nicer but the gameplay is horrible in a lot of new games. Back then, Developers concentrated to make good and fun gameplay and you could easily play the same game like 3 times. The replay value in older games are so much better. In newer games, you doesn’t touch the game ever again after you finished it ones. Especially the fact that games nowadays come half finished and needs hundreds of updates just that it becomes playable is really sad. The same for the DLCs and Microtransactions in a couple games. That’s why I find newer AAA games for Playstation/Xbox/PC shit. Awesome looking but nothing else. Back then you made a one time purchase and got everything. No DLCs, no microtransactions, no needed updates etc. That’s why I think Nintendo is better in this regard. Their games doesn’t look as good as PS/Xbox but their games make much more fun. Especially the Multiplayer with Friends and Family. The PS2 had so many good Multiplayer games but nowadays there are almost no PlayStation exclusive multiplayer party games which you could easily play with friends who aren’t exactly into gaming.
FTI If you play PSone and PS2 games or are interested in replaying them For the best visual experience “they must be played with a CRT televisions” (Those that we’re produced during that time) [ If you play these games with more modern monitors or TV’s they will look far worse they did during the early 2000’s ]
Great video! I don't mean to split hairs, but you mention at 9:05 that every BC game is sold digital. Unless it just varies by region, I haven't found this to be true. Driver San Francisco for example is not available to buy off the Xbox store. If you look at the BC list on the Xbox website, you'll notice a lot of the games are not clickable. I'm pretty sure the ones that aren't clickable are not playable without the disc (though it does still download the game when you put the disc in).
Finally you speak about two systems in a video . I like the way you present your videos , but I think you should start talking the News about all Gaming Companies , not just Sony ... This is my suggestion
Backwards compatibility is very important to me, it’s one of the many reasons why I made the jump to PC, but I don’t see BC being that big of a feature or play a big part in someone’s buying decision between the PS5 and XSX.

The only thing I don't agree with is that Sony wouldn't have to reverse engineer PS3 because they have full specs for it. All they would need to do would be to implement a very well optimized (and compatible) emulator. I'm not saying that would be an easy feat, but certainly easier to tackle with the blueprints at hand than otherwise.
Xbox’s Backwards compatibility is a true selling point for me as a gamer. I love being able to bring my classic games moving forward with me to the next generation, and not only that but essentially will have 4 generations of games on 1 platform running with major upgrades. Incredible.
You DO NOT have 4 generations of games. Only 39 og Xbox games. 500 Xbox 360 games (that’s about 10% of the total library) and 99% of Xbox one games.

At the time, Sony thought Cell-based systems would be the future. They had dreams of licensing the technology out to make supercomputers (maybe consumer PCs too) That's why they spent hundreds of millions developing it. In their mind at the time, I'm sure they thought every future PS would use Cell architecture.

If legacy really mattered people would just keep their original hardware. No one says a word about Nintendo not supporting backwards compatibility. Does the Switch play Wii U, Wii, Gamecube, N64, Super Nintendo, or NES games? No it doesn't support ANY of those systems. Sure you can buy some of their legacy games on the virtual console, but you have to pay for them. It doesn't matter, people buy new consoles to play new games.
Backwards compatibility is a convenience feature, it is a luxury. People need to get over it and be happy to get some backwards compatibility and stop complaining about what they didn't get. Particularly when many people never actually even use the feature. I kept my 60gb PS3 because it could play all my PS1, PS2 and PS3 games. I haven't touched it in years. I still have my NES and my Super NES I rarely use them. And I bought a Retron 5, I do play that slightly more than my other retro consoles. But mostly I play new games. If you mostly play old games there are solutions, namely use the original hardware. It will always run the games 100% of the time.

I got the hunch that Xbox Series X is going to be the better system. Xbox Series X's backwards compatiblity alone means WAYY more games that I haven't played yet. They are sure offering A LOT of great stuff for the next Xbox and I think that next generation is going to be Xbox's generation. I will get the Xbox first.
I'm no Sony fanboy as I have an Xbox one, but damn just because it has better stats on paper doesn't mean it's gonna play out well. If you really wanted to play older classic games you could spend less than $100 and get an Xbox or playstation that can play all the old games you want. People buy new consoles BECAUSE people want new games and features. It's as simple as that and when you factor in the the ps5 will have better and more exclusives, a superior ssd (which can make or break a system trust me) and an already supportive fanbase. Excellent video, I feel that Microsoft worked so hard on BC for more than just consoles, working on a PowerPC to x86-64 converter I would imagine is very useful in the server world. (CPU code is converted, GPU code is emulated, digital foundry did a great video on it), Plus it helped Xbox game pass in the early days.
Guess I'll just do the same thing I do at every launch; wait 6 years to buy the console.

Its never a good idea to buy a system at launch. (Systems at launch are always faulty, far too overpriced and have no games until about two years after console launch.)
With that being said, the Xbox Series X looks far appealing than the PS5 which looks like a white binder.
I also like the total backwards compatible features of the Series X as opposed to the PS5 which only has limited PS4 backwards compatibility and nothing for the PS1, PS2, or PS3 at all.
Just fyi, the “3D sound engine” is based on the ps3 architecture, and is as powerful on its own as a PS4. -mark cerny said. I Can see how this hardware in the ps5 could support ps3 data, and/or along with some if needed emulation on the ps5 end. I hope this is the case.
The tempest engine on relates to sound sources and is not designed to be used in any other way. Especially not for a ps3 ps2 or ps1 emulator. Let it go

The Tempest engine is designed _in the style of_ a PS3 SPE core, with DMA and no caching, which was found to be an almost ideal design for real time sound processing. It's not, however, an _actual_ PS3 SPE architecture. It's actually one heavily modified RDNA2 Compute Unit, made by AMD. Developers _can_ use it for general purpose processing unrelated to sound, but it doesn't seem any better for emulating a PS3 than any other part of the PS5.
the portion of the cell that needs emulation are the SPEs...since the modified rdna2 core is modelled after the spes and cerny states it can take up to 20% bandwidth (more data throughput than the whole ps3) and is as strong as all 8 jaguar cores in the ps4, it may be able to aid in emulation of the ps3...the rsx would be emulated with the gpu (duh lol) and the ppe would just be run by the cpu giving the tempest engine instructions. this single core has access to more bandwidth than the ps3 and rdna2 is on 7nm which is very transistor dense. for people to simply say it won't be able to help ps3 emulation is quite reductive. with all that said, gotta be careful assuming sony will put the effort on bc since it seems to have let bc fall by the wayside in recent times. i will say that mark cerny does indeed say AMD handled bc "masterfully." the remapping of the ps5 while working in ps3 bc mode could be as simple as reorganizing the hardware in system verilog based on the similarites discussed in the road to ps5 talk.

It would seem you have something wrong with your logic on the "why" for there being limited Xbox originals vs Sony not having ps1 emulator support. You claim that it is becomes Microsoft is monetizing their efforts vs Sony not being able to because people will pop in their discs. However, if you have the disc for the supported Xbox original game, you can pop that into an Xbox One just fine. So it would sound like both Sony and Microsoft would be capable of the exact same levels on monetization here.
Also there are two large issues on the limitations of which Xbox Original games are emulated. The first and most important, which is why everyone knows it, is just the simple licensing issues. For a lot of these, even the original publisher no longer retains the rights to the game. However another big issue less talked about is that the Xbox Original had analog face buttons. The harder you pushed the X button, for example, it might have did something different in game. Any game that used this, games like Shenmue 2 or Xtreme Beach Volleyball, cannot be emulated with current digital controllers.

7:30 Well... Do keep in mind that RPCSX3 is the work of just the one guy. Who was no access to any of the documentation and has to reverse engineer the entire thing. So imagine a team of a few people at Sony dedicated to it, with access to all of Sony's documentation on PS3 hardware. It should absolutely be achievable to have some games run properly. I think it's more of a cost thing than anything else.
But keep in mind, Sony lost alot of money on the PS3/PSVITA generation. So they're probably gonna leave it dead in the water.

Also to add, the PS5 took the PS3 audio engine and improved on it since it was superior to the audio engine on the PS4. So some groundwork is there for PS3 play.
But why? They put their resources in brand new games. That's where Sony's money and effort goes and rightfully so. I won't buy a PS5 to play a PS2 game. It's extra but not needed.

Anyone thats confused on the PS5 backward compatibility with PS4 should know when you purchase a PS5 make sure to backup all your data from the PS4, then log in to your PSN on the PS5 and retrieve your backup data. Doing this will allow you to access all of your PS4 library games and play them on the PS5.

I was always thinking of having a psn account and the games you purchased would be linked to that account, that means that you could access them from any console. But then again, PS won’t get much profit from it and it would be very susceptible to hackers.
It worked that way for digital PS1 games on PS3, PSP and PS Vita. I still don't understand why Sony didn't make have an ps1 emulator on PS4 and just sell the hundreds of ps1 games they are still selling on PS3/Vita on PS4.

I love this video for how it went into much detail and it was easy to understand. For me personally, it does not really matter if the PS5 doesnt get native backwards compatibility with PS1-PS3 games. It also doesn't make much sense because it would end up being costly, difficult, and in the end not worth it.

Great video man - but I would challenge you on a few things:
1) I think you made a bit of a false equivalency on the PS5 to PS4 backwards comparability to the XsX to X1. Every X1 game will work on the XsX day one, whereas a maximum of 100 PS4 games will work on the PS5. I think you interpreted the fact that both are theoretically possible with what Sony has committed to in practice.
2) You said both Xbox and PS have the same “smart delivery” feature, but only MS have branded it, but then went on to describe that Sony may not do this for hard disc games. I think that’s a bit self refuting because that’s exactly what Xbox will do, so they are not offering the same service...

I still feel uneasy about this. Right now my current ps4 is on its last legs and I'd like to replace it. I own most of the ps4 hits on digital. They should work on ps5 but I don't know.

@@DominiqueDeMann Optical drive doesn't work. Its super loud even after taking it apart, cleaning it and applying new paste, and it locks up randomly. More likely after an hour or so of play.

I'm not overly concerned about Sony's limited backwards compatibility features because I still have my legacy consoles to play my older games with. I think backwards compatibility is more of a niche feature and will never be utilized extensively by the majority of consumers, not to mention the fact that implementing it is not cost effective and will make the PS5 more expensive for reasons mentioned in this video. Sony investing for the future is the right call. Great content by the way. Really love your mini documentaries about Sony's older machines.

Finally an unbiased look on how BC works in these systems. A lot of people don’t get the licensing aspect of BC, which is the biggest reason behind it. Rule of thumb is if there is not a way to make money off of it, don’t count on it in this industry. However, you did fail to mention when it comes to Forwards Compatability, most, of not all will not offer this option permanently. For instance Madden 21 will offer a free upgrade on PS5 from PS4 and Smart Delivery on Xbox need to be redeemed by a certain date. This actually sucks. So essentially you could buy Madden 21 for Xbox One or PS4, get a next gen system in let’s say 2022, but because the publisher no longer supports the timeframe you had to redeem smart delivery or your PS5 upgraded version, you will still be playing the last gen version on a next gen system. So there’s that. I wish you would have touched a little bit in that too, but otherwise great video.
Maybe I am too old to understand the mindset of the young people these day. Why didn't all the people just kept their old gaming machines. If these guys were really into old games they would have kept their old hardware. It seems that these just people just want to play this old games because it is cool to demand BC. They do not seem to have any touch with the reality of retro gaming. PS2 games especially had a very bad image quality. Playing these old games on a 4k TV can be a blurry mess. Same goes or PS1 games. I use original hardware for my ps1 games and a Framemeister and I like the image. But these young and cool tech hipsters would run away if they see their old games upscaled in 4k. These gamers very never meant to be shown in such high resolutions. You will see things you have never seen before. I know Jim Ryan is hated for his statement that he questioned why anybody would like the play the old Grand Torismo Games. But he is right. Old Games on the PS5 will freak out many games that have not played them in ages . They will play for a a few minutes and will go back to modern games. It is not worth for Sony to invest tons of money into a service that actually nobody is used. PS4 BC to keep the most recent gaming past alive is more than sufficient.

Some people’s consoles have stopped working or they don’t have space for an alternate setup with a TV that’ll look better with those games. With the enhancements that come with emulation, the games will look a little more passable.

I still have my old PS2. But given the dumb 10 year old I was back then, I dropped it several times, and it's generally not in a very good condition anymore. These machines and especially their lasers and the plastic used to build them don't get any better by the times. That's why I bought a used one about a year ago.
That one works fine, but it was made for CRT TVs - which we used to happily replace with an LCD some years ago.
That's why I got a used Sony CRT along with my replacement PS2, as well as a high quality scart cable. That setup is beautiful and exactly as those consoles were meant to be used. But I still have to get that 60 kilo son-of-a-CRT out of it's dusty corner every time I want to use my PS2, because apart from some retro game sessions with friends, that thing doesn't serve any purpose but attracting dust.
I've actually played through the old GTA's, Need for Speed and Lego Star Wars on my PS2 some time ago, so I spent more than five minutes with it. And even though these games can be a pain in the ass compared to new titles, I still had a good time.
Why do I want backwards compatibility? To not have to stress my 20 year old console any more, and because it would ease up the setup so much to just be able to play PS2 games on an HDMI console. I also bought a fat PS3, because it combines the two worlds, lets me enjoy old games on a new screen and shows how good they could be looking when not squeezed through an analog cable. Still, I have to fear about that fat thing YLOD'ing on me one day.
I know there's things like the Framemeister, but I don't want to spend several 100 bucks on yet another device, when Xbox users get the same feature built-in.
As for the financial part in developing backwards compatibility, I totally get that Sony isn't making any profit off it. And although it hurts, I can't blame them for probably not investing that much in bc. I just would like to see it happen, for emotional reasons. I admit that.
One thing that smart delivery does is check and download the upgrade for you. We don't know for PS5 if you'll have go to the PSN store and find the title yourself and redeem the upgrade.

I'm a PlayStation fan and its my console of choice. I have all of their consoles in fact, but I think that Xbox is starting to get ahead of them when it comes to the backwards compatibility game. Which truly saddens me to see. PlayStation needs to step it up and get more of these PS 1, 2, 3 and 4 games running on the PS5 without having to pay an additional fee or anything. Psnow is not the solution. Like at all. So PS4 has literally NOTHING when it comes to backwards compatibility. Psnow is just netflix i dont wanna pay for games ive already bought. I want to put in my old discs and have them play. Also for digital games to transfer over. I think a in-between approach would be quite nice, allowing people to use their discs while also licensing the titles they can for digital release (said digital release could include trophies and other enhancements like native widescreen support etc.) while the disc version is just the game running under emulation with no apparent enhancements, while they still curate the support for disc titles to a certain extent, like not allowing titles they haven't tested or at least giving a warning before launching the title for example.
That's what I'd want at least, I think there's definitely a middle ground that's better than the approach either company has gone with.

Yeah you forgot to mention that rpcsr3 is being build by a couple of normal gamers at home with no degree. Playstation could easily make a ps3 emulator, as you said, there playstation now service would be useless. I dont want a monthly subscription plan, lemme pay once and then stream it.

One of the selling points, possibly the only selling point, of building a digital library is the ability to move it forward with you. If I have to keep the old hardware to play the game I bought digitally, then what's the point? I can still play PC games I bought 20 years ago on my newest PC.
If consoles want to move into a digital direction (which, let's face it, they absolutely do), backwards compatability is a must.
Additionally, legacy preservation is important. PS2s are getting older and that hardware won't survive indefinitely.

Not only does xbox have better backwards compatibility and supports every generation, but you also get higher resolutions and higher framerates on a lot of games from earlier generations. Then you also can install retroarch and play ps1, ps2, psp, GameCube, Nintendo 64, super Nintendo, sega saturn, dreamcast, and sega genesis games. You can actually play games at 4k 60fps with retroarch as well. Basically xbox has better sony back compat than sony has for themselves lol. Then you have smart delivery to make things way easier than what sony is doing. Plus xbox doesn't charge you for those upgrades. On top of all those things you have gp ultimate . With the studios Microsoft aquired I'm even more excited for their exclusives over sony's as well
In terms of disc support I have thought that the PS5 would not support PS1 and PS2 because back in those days you needed a memory card to save your games, in the current game consoles you don't need a memory card, your games are saved on Hard Drive. So I can see that it would be very expensive for Sony to make PS1 and PS2 discs to run on PS5.
One thing I noticed about the ps3 after they added ps2 classics to be available to buy digital from the psn store any ps2 game seems to give the message “ this game is not playable in this format” . I kind of think it means that the recent ps3 system updates have added ps2 backwards compatibility to all ps3 , but not allow ps3 systems to actually ps2 games. I could be wrong but likely if then system was modded to allow ps2 disc to be played likely any ps3 could in theory play ps2 discs .
The chart at 6:58 is sized and shaped like it is for a reason. Sony has already mentioned that they're using a heavily customized 8 core CPU... Add the proper SOC to each core and you can mimic the 8 core cell processor and run a legacy PS3 mode (non-emulation)...

If you keep your expectation high you will eventually be disappointed, keeping it low you will be pleasantly suprised. I personally do not care about old gen-games, so why are people whinning about a feature (BC) that they are not willing to pay for and will rarely used lol Modern games are much better than older ones, and we live in an age where ther is streaming and remaster of oder games. I will not like the PS5 to cost $100 more just because the included the PS3-SoC with PS2-software Emulation which i do not care.
Emulating/running Cel Broadband SPU code on x86 cores and GPU compute units is more complex than that. The theoretical best that could be hoped for would be a card containing the equivalent to a Cel Broadband processor and APU, requiring its own I/O, power and cooling solution. While not impossible, it would be a very expensive add-on.

nah, it’s subjectiv but I think that new modern games aren’t better then older ones. The graphics looks nicer but the gameplay is horrible in a lot of new games. Back then, Developers concentrated to make good and fun gameplay and you could easily play the same game like 3 times. The replay value in older games are so much better. In newer games, you doesn’t touch the game ever again after you finished it ones. Especially the fact that games nowadays come half finished and needs hundreds of updates just that it becomes playable is really sad. The same for the DLCs and Microtransactions in a couple games. That’s why I find newer AAA games for Playstation/Xbox/PC shit. Awesome looking but nothing else.
Back then you made a one time purchase and got everything. No DLCs, no microtransactions, no needed updates etc.
That’s why I think Nintendo is better in this regard. Their games doesn’t look as good as PS/Xbox but their games make much more fun. Especially the Multiplayer with Friends and Family. The PS2 had so many good Multiplayer games but nowadays there are almost no PlayStation exclusive multiplayer party games which you could easily play with friends who aren’t exactly into gaming.
FTI If you play PSone and PS2 games or are interested in replaying them

Great video! I don't mean to split hairs, but you mention at 9:05 that every BC game is sold digital. Unless it just varies by region, I haven't found this to be true. Driver San Francisco for example is not available to buy off the Xbox store. If you look at the BC list on the Xbox website, you'll notice a lot of the games are not clickable. I'm pretty sure the ones that aren't clickable are not playable without the disc (though it does still download the game when you put the disc in).
Finally you speak about two systems in a video .

Backwards compatibility is very important to me, it’s one of the many reasons why I made the jump to PC, but I don’t see BC being that big of a feature or play a big part in someone’s buying decision between the PS5 and XSX.

The only thing I don't agree with is that Sony wouldn't have to reverse engineer PS3 because they have full specs for it. All they would need to do would be to implement a very well optimized (and compatible) emulator. I'm not saying that would be an easy feat, but certainly easier to tackle with the blueprints at hand than otherwise.
